Dr. Lisa Gives a Sh*t

Dr. Lisa Gives a Sh*t

ABOUT THE SHOW: Dr. Lisa has been practicing unlicensed therapy since 2001. She’s worked with over 1,000 clients including artists, comedians, musicians, politicians, writers, actual shrinks, celebrities and complete strangers. In 2001, she added Self-Proclaimed Psychotherapist to her busy schedule as an art director and conceptual artist. As an art project, she conceived and produced a live show where she invited audience volunteers to have a quickie therapy session on a couch on stage with her, making fun of the fact that she had no experience, and showing off her forged diploma.Within a year she had a regular show, Psychotherapy LIVE! and a ton of press to go with it from places like, The New York Times, Time Out New York, The Village Voice and pretty much any NYC paper with a theater section. She started her radio show, Dr. Lisa Gives A Shit in 2015, and before the pandemic, continued to perform therapy live in front of audiences. With her lightning quick read of people and her forthright insights, she can get to the essence of what people are trying to communicate quickly, and her sense of humor keeps everyone out of trouble.Due to her genuine curiosity, thoughtful questioning and quick wit, Dr. Lisa’s guests/patients reveal themselves whether they are planning to or not. It takes either a willingness to divulge or a bit of courage to be on Dr. Lisa’s couch. In Dr. Lisa’s world, everyone can sit for a therapy session and anything can seem like a therapy session. https://listentodrlisa.com/

Robert Galinsky’s had a very rough couple of years with his father growing up. His father had undiagnosed depression which as we discussed, he worked through and resolved.   His childhood experiences motivated him to heal and help others has given him a more than full life as an artist: an actor, a writer, director, teacher, coach. Galinsky's suburban life drew him to find out directly how struggling people lived. Galinsky has been...

I had a blast with Kevin Allison in this session. At over a million downloads a month, live shows all over the country, a book and more-RISK! is described as, "a hit podcast where people tell true stories they never thought they'd dare to share." Listen to any episode and you will see what we're saying! It's sooooo exceptional. Kevin is a professional sharer, so he didn't hold back with Dr. Lisa. He talks about his gay group therap...

Kelsey has played and collaborated with many people; he is known most recently for his recordings as Blak Emoji. He also produced a film and has produced other artists, and did a one-person musical stage performance based on his own life. He has lots of cool stories to tell. Kelsey is a consummate professional on every level—first and foremost his own work. He's super smart about navigating the music business and he has real experi...

Artist Scooter LaForge is a delight. To be honest, I somehow felt like connecting with him on this show was healing for me-now who’s the shrink!? Scooter’s work is amazing and so instinctual- he cannot not do it. Even though he’s worked with big names like he is as humble as can be. So much to learn from his perspective—growing up as a gay man in a tiny town in Arizona. I have to say I was envious hearing of all the free-range outd...

Did I tell you I opened at gallery to show funny art in a comedy space? Philip Markle and his team at the Brooklyn Comedy Collective generously agreed to work with me and now it's up! I am the director and creator of the gallery. I have always admired Babak's work and now he's the second show in the gallery. He came to NYC for his install and opening so I was able to do this fantastic session here with him. We dig into his influenc...

Sadie Aznat is a A British asian comedian breaking boundaries with her insightful humor, thought-provoking commentary, and infectious charm. Sadia clearly makes her own choices. Like deciding when she was 19 that she wanted to wear her hijab full time. She’s a comedian who recently published a book: Love Bomb: Sadia takes the time to school me (us) in the realities of being a sex-positive hijab wearer. She’s doing a great job of er...

David's plans in March have exceeded expectations which is mostly exciting, with some of the normal moving to New York housing stress —keeps it real of course. Here's our session from this past March so you can see where this fruitful + exciting journey began! https://www.podtrac.com/pts/redirect.mp3/pdst.fm/e/traffic.megaphone.fm/RADIO6476872637.mp3?updated=1683744909

BETH CAMPBELL is someone who’s work first emerged in 2000 and impressed the f*ck out of me at the first greater New York Show. I became an instant fan and have watch her work has expanded and developed since then. So I was thrilled to have her on as my guest. This question from an interview by Sara Murkett in the Huffington Post describes what people often wonder when they see the body of Campbell’s work: "It seems to me that to ma...

Suzanne Murphy is a VERY successful Wall Street veteran (over 20 years). She owns an upper east side apartment, speaks at, and attends NYC social events that no one I know goes to. So, when she seemed genuinely interested coming out to Bushwick and being on my show, I was honored. It’s not even a charity event! It was illuminating for me to hear Suzanne talk about her values and hard work that has led her to have the life she has....

A banner day for Dr. Lisa! I got to talk with two hot young guys, Seth Cerrate and Patrick Bayley about their brand new collective Yea Man Spa Global which did a project that solicited sex stories in public, set up a warren of office cubicles and then encouraged fair goers to answer the phones and Surprise! It was such a blast talking to these guys about their (only a month old!) art collective and how they hit the ground running f...

This is a vintage episode from 2016. To learn more about Schrager, her wide-ranging work and career HERE: https://leahschrager.com/ Instagram @leahschrager @onaartist Leah Schrager and I were aware of each other because we both do therapy as an art endeavor. Leah does work as Sarah White, the Naked Therapist. But her work is much more multifaceted than just one character and one medium. We had a fascinating discussion where we...

How could someone so self-loathing as David Letterman)be able to accomplish all that he accomplished which includes having an indelible stamp on American culture? That's the basis of the discussion I have Jason Zinoman, author of the recent seminal book on David Letterman: Letterman, The last great King of Late Night. https://www.amazon.com/Letterman-Last-Giant-Late-Night/dp/0062377213/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr= J...

I start this session by blurting out to my guest, ArtNet's National Art Critic, Ben Davis, that I have an art critic crush on him because I do! And I barely know him. Ben is one of the most insightful, honest, direct and hilarious art writers I have ever read. He really stands out to me in his art writing in that he is able to place art in a cultural, economic and social context in a very articulate, comprehendible way, while someh...

I saw Mick perform at a great show-Morrison Motel from John Morrison and I was immediately taken with the quality of his work - SO SHARP! Here's something worth noting from his bio: "Mick is a former laborer, professional boxer, addiction counselor & skeptic who moved to NYC at 48 & began doing standup." My take on Mick after this session is that he's a natural and despite not having a obvious path to it, the comedian in his soul t...

I had dropped into Brklyn Comedy Club on my way home recently and caught this comedian, Edward Farrell, performing and I loved his act—it was highly original as was his character on stage. When I got home I looked him up and found out he owned 2 bars and the club that I saw him perform in! I got in touch with him and voila‑he was on the show! I dug in heartily and got to know Edward a bit through this session. He’s an introvert wit...

I don't usually like to have close friends on because I know the answers to most of my questions and I don't like faking it—but Holly DeRito and I had never discussed the experiences she had when she was working full time as a Dominatrix before she became the Founder and Director of Waggytail Rescue, a small dog rescue with a wide national/international footprint—or should I say pawprint? in the mid-aughts. Holly is a true self-mad...

I was totally jolted out of my art world cynicism by spending an hour with these two masters, one accomplished and one on his way. Don Porcella is a well-known artist with amazing, original work and a loooong resume of shows, fairs and collectors. Michael Regilio, a super smart, HILARIOUS, LA comic, was on DLG about a year ago. We learned quite a bit about his background which includes him having to wear an eyepatch as a child.
