Garfield Bowen, co-host slashproducer, back in the studio
with Dr Mark Pamer.
(00:34):
Dr Pamer, how you doing today,I'm awesome.
Garfield, let's do this.
So, dr Pamer, what are sometips to keep your lungs healthy?
Speaker 3 (00:43):
Well, let's see.
Number one through 573 would bedon't smoke.
That would be the top of thelist.
That'd be the first 200 pagesin the book.
Don't smoke, don't inhale smoke.
You know, smoke really causes asevere inflammatory reaction in
the lungs.
The immune system sees everysmoke particle as a foreign
(01:06):
invader and attacks it and yourlungs can get destroyed in the
process of that.
Can I didn't say will Kind ofcomes down to some interplay
between your ability to combatthe inflammation.
But not smoking is really, orinhaling smoke is really the big
thing in keeping the lungshealthy.
That's absolutely Two vaccines, you know, get yourself your
(01:29):
influenza vaccine.
That can really help.
It can prevent influenza.
It can certainly lessen thecourse of influenza.
You know, if you've ever hadinfluenza A, you know how bad it
was.
You don't want to do that again.
If you haven't had influenza, you don't know yet, but it's
horrid.
So vaccines for influenza, forstreptococcus pneumoniae, that's
(01:55):
the pneumococcal vaccine, thePrevnar 20 is the new one out,
the RSV vaccine, respiratorysyncytial virus, for those
adults who are over 60,especially who've got some lung
disease, I would highlyrecommend that.
The vaccines are important.
Staying healthy in general isimportant.
The healthier you are, thebetter your immune system is,
(02:16):
the easier it is for you tofight off infectious disease
once it presents itself to you.
Because I mean, think about itYou're inhaling stuff all day
long, including viruses and dustparticles and stuff that's got
bacteria on it, so it's in yourlungs all day.
So if your immune system is notgood, sometimes that stuff can
(02:37):
set up shop and next thing youknow you're getting infected.
So staying healthy, goodnutrition, that's important.
Part of that lifestylemodification of good nutrition,
that's important.
And part of that lifestylemodification of good nutrition
comes down to exercise.
We know exercise absolutelyincreases your immune
functioning.
You know you're ventilating, you get better cardiovascular
(02:58):
fitness, you're less short ofbreath, everything's.
You know Everythingphysiologically seems to get
better with exercise.
For the majority of people Onour side of the fence, for those
who have lung impairment, whether it's COPD, fibrosis,
asthma, post-covid et cetera wedo pulmonary rehab in our office
(03:20):
and we see tremendousimprovements in people's
shortness of breath withpulmonary rehab.
And you know it's our hope thatwe're getting somebody from a
quite debilitated state to beingable to walk in a much, much
more, sometimes over a mile.
And then, you know, hopefullythey keep that up For patients
who've got a number ofcardiovascular issues, whether
severe heart failure or they'vehad a valve replacement or a
(03:43):
stent or some other conditions.
We've got cardiac rehab.
We have intensive cardiac rehabin my office.
In fact we're one of the onlyMedicare certified sites for
intensive cardiac rehab here.
We're the only one south ofcentral Florida, which is a very
rare program that really helpspeople with their breathing and
(04:05):
their cardiovascular fitness andgetting them on the right road.
For people who've got lungdisease, other tips for healthy
lungs you know, let's not forget, there are medications for lung
disease that can not justimprove lung function but
prevent exacerbations.
Whether you've got asthma, copd, pulmonary fibrosis, these
drugs can be life-saving.
They can certainly, as I said, improve symptoms, improve lung
(04:28):
function, prevent exacerbations, prevent the loss of lung
function.
Those are super important.
Anti-inflammatory therapy youknow it can be great for the
lung.
There's some of it'sprescription, some of it's not
prescription.
N-acetylcysteine, nac, 600milligrams twice a day has been
shown to decrease flare-ups ofCOPD.
(04:49):
You know when it's taken twicea day.
You know people.
There's people who takeglutathione.
I've got evidence on onN-acetylcysteine.
You know the glutathione.
Not as much but stands toreason it should be in the same
ballpark.
(05:10):
But really, you know, nutrition, lifestyle, exercise, vaccines,
medications avoiding sick peopleis a big one.
I mean, you know, let's face it, if somebody's got tuberculosis
, stay away.
You know, if they've got activeinfluenza, stay away.
If they've got active influenza, stay away.
Grandparents, if yourgrandchild is sick with
something and they want to comeover and play with you, probably
best to just say why don't youwait until you're healthy?
(05:31):
Because you don't want that.
You don't want that.
So try to stay away from sickpeople.
That really helps.
It's common sense.
But staying away from smoke, stay away from sick people,
healthy nutrition, lifestyle, diet, exercise, meds for lung
(05:54):
disease that's pretty much it.
You know.
It's all common sense.
You know, see your doctor,we've got stuff.
We can help, believe it or not,we're better than Facebook.
We can do our job.
That's all we get paid to do.
Let us help.
