Speaker 1 (00:01):
This is the Dream
Chaser Show.
Hey everybody, welcome back tothe show.
My name is Eric and today I'mgoing to be talking to you about
something that's near and dearto my heart.
It's that pesky inner voiceinside of our heads.
It's that voice that oftentimesreplays past events where we
(00:23):
failed or look stupid, and itstarts to trickle into our
everyday lives where we're likeoh, you can't do that, you can't
do this or that person's doingbetter than me here, and we
start to compare ourselves toothers.
And I'm here to tell you rightnow if we don't fix that, that
is going to absolutely stop usfrom achieving so many things in
(00:43):
our lives.
It's going to hold us back.
It holds a lot of people back,in fact.
A lot of people make it to theend of their lives never
overcoming and never conqueringthat self-doubting talk.
So let's dive in.
I'm going to give you keystrategies and things that you
can start using today.
But quick disclaimer none ofthis is going to be a quick fix,
(01:04):
right?
I'm not a big believer in theseget rich quick schemes.
A lot of times those get richquick type of mentalities, those
get something for nothing.
Easy that you take the easystreet and the easy path.
That's not going to help us andit's not going to lead to long
term success.
So, like I said, we're going totalk about some foundational
(01:26):
principles that you canincorporate into your life that
are going to help you long term.
That's what we want.
We want to build our house onsolid foundation with solid,
sturdy walls, not on quick sandand with crappy contractors,
because we know what happensthen it starts to settle and the
wall starts to separate.
We don't want that.
So let's dive in.
(01:48):
The first thing I want everybodyto understand is that we all
have an inner critic, some sortof self doubting talk that we
spend a lot of our timesrepeating in our heads.
And we got to defeat that.
I'll tell you, growing up, Ihad so much of this in my life.
I was a smaller guy and so whenI'd go play sports, like hockey
(02:08):
and football, I got destroyedby a lot of times by these
bigger dudes, and I would lookat them and be like, oh, I'm not
, I'm not that strong and I'mnot as good as that person.
And a lot of times I wouldbleed into my other hobbies or
activities, right, if I wastrying to get good at playing an
instrument or get good atskateboarding or drawing all
(02:32):
these things I've kind ofdabbled in.
But I would look to these otherpeople that are doing a lot
better than me and I would say,oh, I don't have that skill set,
I'm just going to stop, Ibetter just give up.
And I can tell you, with somepretty solemn regrets, that
there's a lot of things that Ijust gave up on because I had
that self doubting time.
But I've been working on it andI want to help other people
(02:53):
work on it, because I don't wantyou to give up on something,
especially if it's a big dreamor a big vision that you have.
I don't want you to give up onit and maybe you don't have that
, that big goal or vision insideof your head.
We're going to talk about thattoday too, right?
So that's the first thingUnderstanding, everybody has it.
Looking people in the face in acrowd and knowing that each
(03:14):
person we're seeing, even ifthey're millionaires or they
have this big fancy house orthey look like they got
everything put together, eventhey have some self doubting
talk, but they've probablygotten better at getting over it
.
Step two you need to develop amajor aim or purpose.
Arnold Schwarzenegger said itbest, in my opinion, when he
(03:36):
talked about not having apurpose or a goal is like having
a ship that doesn't have a mapor a captain in destination.
It'll just go out to sea.
And if it makes it out of theport at all, it probably won't
It'll crash into somethinganother boat or the buoys or the
rocks but if it makes it out tosea it's just going to float
(03:58):
around with the waves untileventually it crashes into
something else.
And a lot of times our livesare like that.
I think most of us will startout with a goal or a purpose or
some sort of aim that we'retrying to attain and then, as
life comes along the mundane, the day-to-day grind, the waking
up, the doing the same thingevery day that starts to kind of
(04:21):
take over our ship and nextthing you know we're way off
course or we become completelycomplacent and we're no longer
making progress towards thatgoal.
So develop a major purpose andif you're not really sure what
your major purpose is, or maybeyou're kind of in a slump and
you're just like I don't knowwhat my life is all about and
(04:42):
what I'm trying to do, where I'mgoing.
One thing that I found thatworked for me is one you got to
get out there and into somequiet.
There's so much noise around usconstantly with our phones going
off text messages, phone calls, emails, facebook, youtube,
(05:04):
tiktok, instagram all of thisstuff.
We don't allow ourselves to getbored.
As soon as we start gettingbored, we reach for our phones
and start scrolling.
Or we play a video game, or weturn on the TV and start
watching YouTube.
We don't allow ourselves to getbored and really start to work
inside of ourselves.
So we need some time to getaway from that.
(05:26):
Set aside some time in your day, even if it's just 10 minutes,
to go out on a walk or maybe sitsilently and start to just
meditate and think about wheream I going, where am I at right
now and how am I doing, andyou'll start to hear this inner
voice.
It's that conscience that'sspeaking to you.
(05:47):
Right?
It's the back of our mind.
It starts to tell us things, but we don't hear that if we're
constantly bombarded with soundsand other stimuli.
If you're a person of faith,it's that Holy Spirit inside of
you.
We don't hear that Holy Spiritwhen we're constantly being
bombarded by other messages fromother people.
(06:08):
Each and every person listeninghas that inner voice within
them and you got to startlistening to it.
So go out on a walk, take somequiet time and figure out what
it is that you want.
If you start feeling somethinginside of you pulling you in a
direction, that's likely a goodplace to start.
(06:29):
And I'll tell you this too Ifyou have some fear and doubt and
I'm not sure how I'm going toattain that, and it's scary
that's probably even a betterindicator that you're on the
right path, because a lot oftimes, our major purpose in life
(06:50):
a big part of it anyway iswrapped in fear.
It's wrapped and I don't knowhow I'm gonna do that, taking
that leap of faith.
I don't know how I'm gonna dothat, but it's called faith for
a reason Because we can't seewhat's on the other side.
You can't see the corners inthe road, but if you just take
it one step at a time and keepdriving, the corner around the
(07:14):
road will reveal itself.
You don't have to have all theanswers up front, all right.
So that's, that's one of thesteps.
The next thing is to then thisis crucial, by the way write it
down on paper.
Write down that major goal orpurpose that you have and Put it
to paper somewhere where you'regonna be able to see it every
(07:34):
day and remind yourself, becauseagain, the mundane grind is
going to start to wear you down.
It's gonna start wearing youdown and you're gonna forget why
you started Right, for example, doing the show and this, doing
these episodes to help otherpeople.
I have had this happen to me somany times where I'm like, oh, I
should, I should do a talk onthat, I should do an episode on
(07:57):
that.
And Then I start to have someof these self-doubts like, ah,
people have heard that or otherpeople have said that already,
and oh, that's, who's that gonnahelp?
And then I don't do it.
And you know what I got to tellyou.
Sometimes it haunts me BecauseI can't help but wonder what if
there was somebody out there whoneeded to hear that?
What if there was somebody, even one person, that you could
(08:21):
have changed and turned theirlife around, or you could have
Help pick them up from thelowest part of their life?
And that helps keep me going.
So I've taken this upon myself.
I've written it down what I wantto do with with this speaking
thing and doing the show.
Write it down on paper, put itsomewhere You're gonna see.
It could be in the mirror inyour bathroom, or maybe it's
(08:42):
right above your bed.
That's where I have mine, so Isee it every night before I go
to bed, I meditate and pray onit, and I wake up in the morning
and I do the same thing, andwhat we're trying to do is pound
that Into our subconscious.
I would urge you to, when youwrite it down, write it in such
a way that you already have itYou're already in possession of
it, okay and start to visualizeit.
(09:03):
What you're trying to do ispound in your subconscious, that
part of your brain that willfeed you ideas and the means of
how to get it.
Your subconscious gives youIdeas.
It will lay out blueprints asyou go, and that's what's so
beautiful about not knowing howto get there, but just trust in
(09:25):
the process and having faiththat it will come to you.
I Can tell you that anybody thatstarted something, anybody big
maybe, that you follow or thatyou admire, that is a big
company, or Amazon, or whateverthey didn't have all the answers
when they started.
They just started.
They made a decision to startand it became this burning
(09:46):
desire, this obsession, toattain it.
And as that burning and diredesire and obsession become
stronger and stronger andstronger, it will feed Into your
subconscious mind and yoursubconscious mind will then
begin to bring forward ideas andplans to make it a reality.
So you want to see that everysingle day repeat that same
(10:11):
statement in your head I want, Iown this house, I own this
house, I own this house.
I have this amount of money inmy bank account, I have this
amount of money in my bankaccount, I have this amount of
money in my bank.
Yeah, right, whatever it isthat you want, I Want to become
an author, I'm want, I am anauthor, I am an author.
Right again, doing in now terms.
(10:31):
And you're starting to feed thatSubconscious part of your brain
and and guess what's gonnahappen?
You will start to get hunchesand ideas to make it a reality.
And here is the next crucialstep you need to act on those
ideas immediately.
Okay, immediately, because ifyou let it go or you get a great
(10:55):
hunch on something that canhelp you get there, if you let
that go, it's going to disappear.
I don't remember who said it,but I read it once in a book
where it talked aboutopportunity, is a lot like a
butterfly that lands on yourshoulder.
You might not always know thatit's there, that idea, that
hunch that you get.
It's going to land on yourshoulder.
(11:16):
It's going to be oh so soft.
You might feel it inside, youmight be like, oh my goodness,
that's it, but if you don't acton it, it will just flood her
away.
Now here's the thing.
I've had this happen plenty oftimes to me where I didn't act
on an idea or an opportunity orthought that I had a hunch.
(11:37):
Don't let that beat you up.
Don't let it discourage you.
There will be another butterflythat will land on your shoulder
.
Learn from it.
Learn to recognize thosehunches when they show up.
Learn to act on opportunitiesto make your dream and your
vision a reality.
You got to learn to find thosebutterflies.
(12:00):
It will come.
Next step is we need to setaside our fears and our doubts.
This is huge.
Like I said before, you won'talways know the curve in the
road.
You're not going to always knowthe whole path to get to where
you want to go.
Just know that around thatcurve there's more road.
Yeah, it might be bumpy yeah,it might be.
(12:22):
Have construction yeah, itmight be a narrow bridge, there
might be animals in it, theremight be a car wreck, there
might be something.
But guess what?
You're going to find a way tokeep on going.
It's going to happen.
You just have to have faith.
And when we set aside thosefears and doubts this is one
thing I've been working on doingis tricking my identity.
(12:44):
Okay, so let's define quicklywhat our identity is.
Our identity is wrapped up inthe thoughts and the actions and
habits that we have day to day.
It's wrapped up in our thoughts, actions and habits.
So as you think of thought, that thought will manifest
itself into some sort of actionand then, as you repeat that
(13:08):
action over and over and overagain, it becomes a habit and
eventually it becomes our lives.
So if you don't believe me,look at the things that you eat.
A lot of times we have habitualeating habits and we eat the
same thing generally.
Of course, we go out to eat andit changes, but for the most
part we stick to the same menu.
We like cheeseburgers, we likewhatever it is.
You've got that thing that youusually eat day to day.
(13:29):
For a lot of us, our breakfastis the same thing.
Look at your exercising habits.
Do you exercise?
Maybe you don't.
If you do, what are you doing?
You lift weights.
Do you go on walks?
Do you run?
I hate running, but we havethese habitual things that it's
hard to break out of and ourthoughts and our actions are no
(13:53):
different.
So when I talk about trickingidentity, if we want something
we don't have, we need to bewilling to do things we've never
done.
I'm going to say that again Ifyou want something you don't
have, you need to be willing todo things you've never done.
We got to do more things thanwe're currently doing because
(14:15):
otherwise, if you keep doing thesame thing, you're going to
have the same results.
What do they say?
The definition of insanity isdoing the same thing and
expecting a different result.
Not going to happen.
You've got to be willing to dosomething different if you want
something different.
So why do we do that?
We trick our identity.
Like I said, we trick ouridentity.
(14:36):
We start by doing small actionsthat are going to change this
long term.
So maybe that's waking up early.
You start saying, hey, I'm anearly riser, I can wake up early
, set your clock back and startto do it.
Like I said, take action.
That'll help you wake upearlier.
You can start.
Maybe we start saying toourselves I'm a reader and not a
TV watcher.
(14:56):
I am going to start learningthings from books instead of
just wasting all my timewatching TV.
And so, when we get home fromwork, instead of grabbing for
the remote, have a book next tous next to the table and start
reading.
I want to take up this newhobby Again.
You've got to start trickingyour identity into thinking that
(15:19):
that's who you are.
It sounds a little crazy, butit's bite-sized pieces.
If you want to become a drawer, the best thing to do is start
drawing.
If you want to do this, thebest thing to do is just start
doing it Now.
Excuse me, I got to slow downbecause I'm getting real into
this.
The last thing that I reallywant you to grab a hold of
(15:41):
before we get out of here is tostart where you stand.
Start right now with the toolsthat you have.
I know far too often we tend tosay, oh, I'm going to start
doing that thing that I wantlater, when I'm ready, when I
have more tools in my possession, when I have more money when I
(16:02):
have more time, when the kidsare gone, when blah, blah, blah,
blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
The thing is, time is limited.
A lot of you have heard me saythat in the past.
Time is limited.
We don't have an infiniteamount of it.
Some of you know somebody who'spassed away very quickly or
very early in their life andit's a sad thing.
(16:24):
It's never fun to go throughthat.
I don't want that for you.
I don't want that for anybodylistening, where they haven't
been able to accomplish thethings they wanted to accomplish
because life ended early forthem.
Time is very limited.
So start where you stand today, start with the tools that you
(16:45):
have and, lo and behold, you'llfind out that more tools will be
given to you as you go.
A sculptor making a piece ofsculpture.
He might only have a hammer anda chisel, and maybe not the
best hammer and chisel, but thenhe starts working on his craft.
He starts sculpting thesebeautiful pieces of art and they
(17:05):
get better and better, and thenhe can start selling them and
improve his tools.
And now his tools are better.
Maybe he's got automated pieceof machinery that can all of a
sudden do quite a bit of thework for him and then his craft
gets better and better.
It's no different than in yourlife.
Tools will show up along theway, but you'll never get to
those tools in that place unlessyou start now with the tools
(17:28):
that you have.
And remember it doesn't have tobe perfect, it does not have to
be perfect.
You will develop your craftalong the way.
Start where you stand right now, take action immediately with
tools you have and develop yourcraft as you go.
My prayer for everybodylistening is that you find that
(17:51):
thing, that meaningful thingthat you really want to do, and
start to overcome the innerdialect that's holding you back,
because most of the time it'snot other people critiquing you.
We tend to tell ourselves thatOther people are judging me,
other people are looking at me.
Here's the deal.
They're all busy thinking thesame thing.
They're all busy with their ownlives and they're probably
(18:13):
thinking the same thing Most ofthe time.
The critics out there areinside of our own heads.
So I want to help everybody getover that.
I want to help you move forward.
I want to help you startprogressing in your life and
trying to attain the things thatyou want to attain, accomplish
them, make them a reality andstart where you stand, with the
(18:34):
tools that you have at yourcurrent disposal.
Have faith that it's going tocome, and listen to those inner
gut feelings, those hunches andsubconscious ideas.
Listen to the little butterflythat lands on your shoulder and
take that opportunity, act on it.
If this message helped you atall, please share it with your
friends and family.
You guys, take care and we'llsee you next time.
