Speaker 1 (00:00):
I want you to ask
yourself do I have a talent that
I'm not using?
Is there something, a gift thatI was given, that I've been
shelving and it's justcollecting dust and decay?
You have a talent.
I know that you have a giftthat was given to you from God
and it's time to use it.
It's time to use it.
Shine your light, show otherpeople that gift that you have.
(00:23):
Inspire other people, be thelight in their world, because
when you shine, it inspiresother people to do the same
thing.
Shine your light, use yourgifts, use your talent, and
that's how you create thefulfilling life, the purposeful
life, the one that you're justso full of fire and energy and
you just love it.
Yes, woo, that's how you do it.
(00:44):
You use those talents to theirfullest and you bring that
passion with you.
What talent do you have thatthe world needs to see?
Once you figure that out, youanswer that question and you
hone it and embrace it, man, your life gets so exciting.
This is the Dream Chaser Show.
(01:05):
Welcome back to the show, everybody, where our mission is
to inspire and improve the livesof those who dare to chase
their dreams.
And I'm your host, eric, andtoday I'm so excited to have you
, because we're going to betalking all about talents, these
God-given gifts that I knowthat each and every one of you
(01:27):
listening has, and you might noteven be using it, so we're
going to dive into that, andwhat's beautiful about it is,
once you realize and truly honeyour talents and your gifts that
you have, you can use them tocreate a fulfilling life.
We're absolutely excited towake up, get out of bed and
attack your day Like, yes, woo, let's go baby.
(01:48):
And the truth is, I know that wehave these hills and these
valleys in our life wheresometimes we're on top and, just
like I said, we're excited andwe're thrilled to be doing what
we're doing, because we justlove it and we're fulfilled and
all these things, and sometimeswe're in these valleys right,
where things are just kind oflow for us and we feel heavy,
(02:11):
and sometimes we're goingthrough struggles and issues in
our lives.
So maybe it's a relationshipproblem that you have, maybe
it's money problem that you have, maybe you're just not feeling
fulfilled at your current job,the thing that you go into
school for, whatever right.
We're in these low points.
What I want for each and everyone of us, though, is to get
(02:31):
back up on those high points inlife where we're feeling
fulfilled, where we're excitedand ready, and we just love what
we're doing.
So let's dive into today's show, and we're going to be talking
about specifically three things.
Number one finding purpose andfulfillment by using your
talents.
Number two creating work thatyou absolutely love, and most of
(02:52):
us have heard this cliche term, and it's if you do what you
love, you never work a day inyour life, right?
I think, though, honestly, there's some validity in that,
and what I want to do isactually pull apart the word
work, because I think most of ushave this preconceived idea of
what work is, and we go to thisplace maybe it's a building and
(03:14):
we clock in at such time eighto'clock and then we clock out at
five, and then we rinse andrepeat Monday through Friday,
and then we can't wait for theweekend, right?
So, instead of that, let's lookat work as a product or service
, because it's, honestly, one ofthe two things You're either
creating a product or service, and somebody else is paying you
for it, and so, at this point, you might be thinking yourself
(03:36):
Eric, I don't have time to doany of this stuff.
I don't have time to createanother lifestyle, another job.
I just don't have time to doany of this stuff.
Well, that's number three, andwe're going to be tackling that
today.
Where are you wasting your timeand where can we start to
create this life that'sfulfilling?
Now, I recently heard thisspeaker.
His name is Jim Rohn.
(03:56):
He said this thing that's justbeen stuck in my head and I
can't get it out.
He said if you want anything inyour life to change, you've got
to change.
And I'm like, yeah, that's sotrue.
Right?
How many times in our liveswere we just like man?
I just if only I had this thing, if only I had more money, my
(04:16):
life would be better.
If only I had this house, mylife would be better.
If only I had this girlfriend, this boyfriend, this whatever
thing to complete me, my lifewould be better.
Well, our lives are never goingto change unless we change.
So the biggest opportunity wherewe can start to make a positive
change in our life is in ourspare time, and so we're going
(04:39):
to dissect where we're using ourspare time.
Are we using it wisely or arewe throwing it away?
All right, here we go.
You guys ready, let's do this.
So I want you to do somethingwith me.
Let's go arm in arm and take ajourney back into your childhood
and find a time in your lifewhere you absolutely loved one
(05:01):
thing, specific thing.
You were really good at it.
You could spend all your timedoing it.
In fact, you just lost track oftime doing it and I'll help you
kind of ignite that flame.
Some of you, you were reallyartistically inclined.
You could get at drawing, goodat painting, maybe you could at
writing.
You just really creative.
(05:23):
As a child, some of you mighthave been working with your
hands.
You could build anything out ofLegos and Kinects and you just
were really good at makingthings with your hands.
And for others, you might havebeen really musically inclined.
You could play an instrument, you could sing and dance.
I definitely can't do most ofthose things.
(05:43):
Mine was I just loved makingvideos.
I had this really crappycamcorder that got from Walmart
for like 20 bucks or whatever, and I mean it was horrible.
You'd watch your videos and ithad the little lines on it like
VHS tapes right, for those ofyou old enough, you know what a
VHS tape is, but I didn't care.
I would set it on the groundand I would take my dinosaurs
(06:07):
and I would make this epicbattle scene where the little
ones are attacking the big T-Rexand they'd have to overcome
obstacles and basically crushthe T-Rex.
And then the video was over, and sometimes I'd use Legos and
Armiemen and all kinds of stuff.
I just loved making videos.
And, fast forward to now, whatI did with that passion was I
(06:28):
would use it in our real estatecareer and make videos and stuff
like that.
So for those of you thatwatched it, I just loved making
videos and I still do it to thisday.
You know, when I think of ourchildhood talents, I can't help
but think of my wife.
She just absolutely lovedselling the candy bars.
You know, remember that time inschool where we had to sell
(06:49):
candy or pizza and she wasalways the top saleswoman.
She just loved it and everyonewould buy all of her stuff from
her.
Me, on the other hand, Icouldn't wait to just get rid of
it.
Basically, I would try to go tomy mom's work and pray to God.
One person would buy all myboxes.
So I didn't have to do it right.
But that was her skill and thatwas her talent and it served
(07:10):
her really well when we startedreal estate.
She was just really good at it.
But what I want you to do istake a moment to think about
that talent or skill that youhave it might have been way back
when, right when you were a kidand bring that forward to right
now and ask yourself are youusing that talent?
(07:31):
Or has it just been sittingthere, decaying and we know that
if we don't use it, we lose it,right?
But the good news is there'sstill probably a little bit of
that flame left.
We can still take that ember, fan it and create a flame out of
(07:51):
it.
So bring that into today andsay, hey, how can I start using
that again?
How can I reignite that passion?
Because that's something thatyou have, that gift that you
need to use.
And the longer you wait to useit, time is taken by, and what I
(08:13):
want for everybody listening isto have fulfillment and a
purposeful life where you'reexcited to do what it is that
you do.
And now that we have thatpassion in our mind, we have to
start to dissect and figure outhow can we use that to create
work that we absolutely love.
Right, and like I said before, you might be thinking yourself
(08:33):
dude, eric, I got a full-timejob, I got kids, whatever, I've
got all these obligations.
I don't have time to createthis other job or business that
you're talking about.
Well, like I alluded to earlier, this is the point where we
look into our time and say howare we using our free time?
So think about this, truly, take an honest inventory.
(08:54):
When you get home from work andafter all of your stuff is
settled, what are you doing withyour time, your free time?
Are you spending it on hours ofwatching TV?
Does your Netflix account getused more than your gym
membership, right?
How many hours are you spendingwatching movies, youtube,
scrolling Facebook, instagram, pinterest all these things that
(09:18):
are basically designed just towaste our time, just to
completely waste our time.
Scrolling through these socialmedias does us zero good, and if
we're not careful, some ofthose time wasters can become
full-blown addictions, wherethey feel like completely
entrapping and we can't get outof them.
(09:38):
Just to name a few drugs, alcohol, sexual addictions like
pornography and stuff like that,gambling.
Even social media can be anaddiction.
So now, at this point, we needto ask ourselves how can we
change, how can we begin toshift our time waste into
usefulness.
In order for things to change,we need to be willing to change.
(10:02):
You need to be willing tochange, and a great time to make
a change is by altering ourtime waste and spending it on
something that's actually goingto serve us in the future.
Serve us in the future.
Remember that wasting your timeand talents is an insult to
your creator and the people whobelieve in you.
So if you're not motivated tochange for yourself, be
(10:24):
motivated to change for yourfamily, for your kids, for your
spouse, for your loved one, foryour friends.
Somebody believes in you.
Don't insult them by wastingall your time.
I'm a man of faith and so I'mreminded of this story in the
Bible, where it's in Matthew, and Jesus is talking about how
(10:45):
we are all like a lamp.
We have light inside of us andwe're like a lamp, and I wanna
read that for you.
In Matthew 514, he says you arethe light of the world, and a
town that's built on a hillcannot be hidden.
Neither do people light a lampand put it underneath a bowl.
Instead, they put it on itsstand and it gives light to
(11:05):
everyone in the house in thesame way.
Let your light.
Shine before others that theymay see your good deeds and
glorify your father in heaven.
It says use your light, do nothide it.
Do not hide your talents and donot just let them sit and waste
away.
And the beautiful thing is,once you start to use your
(11:26):
talents and you shine that lightout for others to see, you will
inspire other people to do theexact same thing.
We all know somebody who'sextremely inspiring.
We just love being aroundbecause they're upbeat and
positive and motivational.
We also know the opposite.
I call them energy vampires, the people who just suck all of
(11:49):
our energy away.
Whenever you're around them, their shoulders are slouching
and nothing's going right andthey complain, complain,
complain.
It's like dude, you just needtime away from them because they
suck all your energy away.
So it's important to rememberthat Be the light, shine your
talents, show other people.
You're using those talents tochase your purpose and create a
(12:12):
fulfilling life.
One other story that I'mreminded of is in the Bible it's
also in Matthew, and Jesus istalking about when a master goes
away on a trip and he leaveshis entire kingdom and all of
his possessions to his servants.
And they use this word talents,and I don't think that it's a
coincidence.
Once at that time wasconsidered bags of gold money.
(12:34):
But I find it interesting thatthey use the word talents, so
let's dive in.
Here's how it goes.
Jesus says the kingdom ofheaven is like a man traveling
to a far country who called hisservants and delivered his goods
to them.
To one he gave five talents, toanother he gave two and to
another he gave one, eachaccording to his own ability,
(12:56):
and immediately he went away onhis journey.
So at this point we have thismaster who's about to head out
on a journey and he's left hisservants in charge of everything
, and he gave them one of them.
He gave five talents.
The other, he gave two, and theother, he gave one.
All right, let's continue.
Then he who had received thefive talents went and traded
them and made another fivetalents, and likewise, he who
(13:18):
had received two talents gavetwo more.
But he who had received onetalent dug a hole in the ground
and hid his Lord's money.
So at this point we've got thefirst guy.
He went, used his talents, heshined his light, used his
talents and his time effectivelyand created five more.
The other guy, who had twotalents, did the same thing, got
(13:39):
two more.
But the last guy, he just hadone talent and hid it in the
ground.
And after a long time the Lordof those servants came and
settled the counts with them.
So he who had received the fivetalents came and brought his
five talents forward, sayingLord, you've delivered to me
five talents.
Look here, I've gained fivemore talents beside them.
His Lord said to him well done, good and faithful servant.
(14:03):
You were faithful over a fewthings.
I will make you ruler over manythings.
Enter into the joy of your Lord.
So the master was excited andhappy for him.
He goes well done, good job.
I've gave you this.
You used it, you created moreGreat job.
Then he who had received twotalents came and said Lord, you
(14:25):
delivered to me two talents.
Look, I gained two more talentsbeside them.
And his Lord said to him againwell done, good and faithful
servant.
You've been faithful over a fewthings.
I will make you ruler over manythings.
Enter into the joy of your Lord.
So now we have this other guysame thing.
He had the two talents, madetwo more and his master said
(14:47):
well done, great job.
I'm going to give to you more.
Now let's find out what happensto the guy who hid his talent
and never used it.
Then he who had received theone talent came and said Lord, I
knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you had not sown
and gathering where you had notgathered seed, and I was afraid
I went and hid your talent inthe ground.
(15:09):
Look, there you have what isyours.
So he just basically gave itback to him.
But his Lord answered and saidto him you wicked and lazy
servant, you knew that I reapwhere I had not sown and
gathered where I had notscattered seed.
I kind of imagine he'd be insarcastic here.
He's obviously very pissed,he's angry and he goes on to say
(15:29):
so you ought to have depositedmy money with the bankers and at
my coming I would have receivedback my own with interest.
So take the talent from him andgive it to him who has 10
talents.
So he rips that talent away andgives it to the guy who has 10
talents, and here's where itgets pretty bad, he said.
(15:50):
He goes on to say for everyonewho has more will be given and
he will have abundance, but forhim who does not have, even what
he has will be taken away andcast that unprofitable servant
into the darkness where they'llbe weeping and gnashing of teeth
.
So he's basically saying casthim into hell, get rid of them.
(16:12):
Because he was lazy, he didn'tuse the talent that he was given
, he was unfaithful in usingwhat he was given.
And so here we're at this pointwhere I kind of wrestle with
this stuff, and what I trulywant for each and everybody
listening is I want us, when weget up there, I want our Creator
(16:35):
to say well done, good andfaithful servant, you used what
I gave you, you used yourtalents and you shine your light
for other people to see andglorify your Father in heaven.
Well done, good job, come intomy kingdom.
That's what I want.
And the last thing that I wantis the alternative where Jesus
(16:57):
said for he who does not haveeven what he has will be taken
from him.
Right?
He says you wicked and lazyservant, throw him away.
So every now and then I sit andI think to myself do I have a
talent that I'm not using?
Is there something, a gift thatI was given that I've been
(17:18):
shelving and it's justcollecting dust and decay?
And when I came across this man, that hit me hard, because I
don't want to get up there andhave him say take from him what
was given to him and give it tosomebody else, and I don't want
(17:38):
that for anybody listening.
I know you have a talent.
I know that you have a giftthat was given to you from God
and it's time to use it.
It's time to use it.
Shine your light, show otherpeople that gift that you have.
Inspire other people, be thelight in their world, because
(17:59):
when you shine, it inspiresother people to do the same
thing.
Shine your light, use yourgifts, use your talents and
that's how you create thefulfilling light, the purposeful
light, the one that you're justso full of fire and energy and
you just love it.
Yes, woo, that's how you do it.
You use those talents to theirfullest and you bring that
(18:21):
passion with you.
So, as we end this show, I wantyou to ask yourself one question
.
Think about it.
Truly, shut off the episode, maybe go on a walk, maybe just
sit in silence, or maybe, whenyou're laying down in bed at
night, think about this questionwhat talent do you have that
the world needs to see?
(18:42):
What talent do you have thatthe world needs to see?
Once you figure that out, youanswer that question and you
hone it and embrace it.
Man, your life gets so excitingand I'm so excited for you.
Thanks so much for listening.
(19:03):
Guys, and do me a favor if youliked this episode, share it
