We dive into controversial aspects of the book that have caused it to be one of the most frequently banned books, including LGBTQ themes, violence perpetrated by black men, and sexual explicitness. We also chat about some of the topics we found most poignant throughout the book: historical context, character development, gender expectations, white Christian missionaries, and more. We enjoyed the characters’ evolving perspectives about God’s skin color and women in pants! This month’s genre was Jo's pick: books related to color.
