A town can break twice: first when its jobs vanish, then when its story gets rewritten by fear. We walked through Fall River—slept in Lizzie Borden’s room, ate with locals, and then pressed into Bedford Street’s harsh past—to examine how a “satanic cult” rose from recession, predation, and performance. The headlines point to demons. The record points to control.

We lay out the players: Carl Drew, a runaway who learned power the hard way; Robin Murphy, young and feared, intent on ruling her strip; and Andy Maltese, an older predator whose “psychic dream” revealed a murder detail the public didn’t know. Three women—Doreen Levesque, Barbara Raposa, and Karen Marsden—anchor the timeline, and each case shows how ritual language can mask old crimes: grooming, trafficking, intimidation, and escalating violence. When the sentences landed, the meetings stopped. The “cult” dissolved with the arrest of its enforcers, a clue that belief was the stage dressing and fear was the business model.

If true crime is about more than shock, it’s about seeing the machinery behind the myth. We map the power pyramid, the plea deals, and the evidence that actually moved the cases—like that cinder block confession. Then we zoom back out to ask the harder question: how do we keep the next Bedford Street from forming in any city where money dries up and kids are left unguarded? Hit play, bring your theory, and tell us where you land on panic versus power.

SPEAKER_02 (01:30):
Well, obviously it's not straight alcohol because it
froze.

SPEAKER_00 (01:33):
No, alcohol doesn't froze itself.
Whatever don't froze.

SPEAKER_02 (01:37):
It don't froze.

SPEAKER_00 (01:38):
Yeah, whatever don't froze is the the alcohol.

SPEAKER_02 (01:40):
It doesn't freeze.

SPEAKER_00 (01:41):
The liquid is still straight up alcohol.

SPEAKER_02 (01:43):
I'm looking at myself in the camera and like my

SPEAKER_00 (02:16):
Yeah.
What was uh something twerkyearlier?
What were we doing that wastwerky earlier that we were
talking about twerking somethingor other in the kitchen?
What the hell was it?
I done forgot.

unknown (02:27):
I did too.

SPEAKER_00 (02:27):
You did?

unknown (02:28):
I did.

SPEAKER_00 (02:29):
What was it?

unknown (02:30):
I don't know.

SPEAKER_00 (02:31):
It was some kind of twerk, something or other.

SPEAKER_02 (02:33):
But we gotta talk about this so I can eat some
more chili.
Oh I got chili.

SPEAKER_00 (02:37):
That was some kind of chili.
I have one bowl and I want onemore.
If I remember it, I'll tell you.

SPEAKER_02 (02:40):
Yes.
So today we are recapping ourepisode on the satanic cult that
happened in Fall River,Massachusetts.
Fuck in the 80s.
That again?
Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 (02:53):
Okay, that again.

SPEAKER_02 (02:55):
So if you haven't listened to the episode, go back
real quick, episode 57, FallRiver Cult, and uh listen to
that.
And so you can come back andknow what we're talking about.
But Jesse, I want to hear yourthoughts.

SPEAKER_00 (03:10):
So we went to Fall River.
We did.
Did not know that some shit wentdown that we had talked about
before Satanic Panic, hashtag, whatever you want to call it.
Holy shit.

SPEAKER_02 (03:23):
Well, we while we were in Fall River, we stayed at
the Lizzie Borden bed andbreakfast, and that is where
Lizzie Borden's parents, well, her father and stepmother were
uh axe murdered.
Whatever they were hatcheted todeath.

SPEAKER_00 (03:42):
Yeah.

SPEAKER_02 (03:42):
And uh we covered the story about that.

SPEAKER_00 (03:46):
In her bedroom, Lizzie's bedroom.

SPEAKER_02 (03:48):
And we stayed in Lizzie's bedroom.
It was very comfortable.
I liked it.

SPEAKER_00 (03:51):
I liked the bed.
That's nice.
Uh no weird vibes, but you know, still shit happened.
Shit happened.

SPEAKER_02 (03:58):
Shit did happen there.
And a lot more shit happened inthis town.
And uh that included a sataniccult.
Yeah.
Kind of.
Um that what consisted of sexworkers and pimps.
And uh the man pimp.

SPEAKER_00 (04:14):
Young, young, young, so did we say young?
You said young, I said young.
Children.
And we both said young.
They were 17-ish.

SPEAKER_02 (04:25):
17, between, okay, we'll say between 17 and 26.
And then the oldest was a nasty, dirty old man uh named Andy
Maltisse, who okay, so we've gotfirst off, we've got Carl Drew.
Yeah.
Um, he had come to Fall Riverafter leaving home at 14 because

(04:50):
of abusive situations, and hegot involved in some crime,
which a lot of children do fallinto that.
Um after their horrificchildhood and upbringing, a lot
of them do fall into crime.
Not ever not all of them.
Some of them come out on thebetter side, some of them fall

(05:13):
into what Carl Drew fell into, which was a life of crime, and
then he ended up becoming themain pimp on Bedford Street in
Fall River.

SPEAKER_00 (05:28):
You know, I I feel like you know they had stripped
away some industry, you know, some financial problems.
People were kind of hit, youknow.

SPEAKER_02 (05:36):
It had previously been the number one spot for
textile industry.
And then, you know, recessioncame and things just went
downhill.

SPEAKER_00 (05:47):
And then so pretty much what you had was pimps and
sex workers and wasn't like thenumber two spot in
Massachusetts, too, like thenumber two area in Massachusetts
at one time, not long beforethat.
So it it has a quick it had aquick rise and then boom, it
dropped, you know.

SPEAKER_02 (06:06):
But uh at we can attest to it is beautiful and a
great place to visit.
Oh, it's please go.

SPEAKER_00 (06:11):
Go please go and we will tell you, hit us up because
we will tell you all the coolsecrets and the places to go
because Fall River is beautiful.
Go to it.

SPEAKER_02 (06:20):
So we got Carl Drew who comes to this town as pretty
much a runaway.
He falls into a life of crimeand then becomes a pimp on
Bedford Street in Fall River.
He's pretty much the kingpin ofthat area.
And um he has some competitionwith a young lady who was only,

(06:44):
and I'll I say it insufferably, she was only 17 years old, named
Ra Robin Murphy.
Robin Murphy had been kind oflike a problem, a problem child,
um, and fell into this uh lineof work because of a dirty old

(07:07):
man named Andrew Maltese.
Or was it Andrew or Andre?
Anyway, Andy Maltese uh waspretty much the cause of her
everything that she did.

SPEAKER_00 (07:18):
A lot of a lot of fucked up stuff, and there was
like a whole society that wasjust pushing all these kids out
into something they weren't theyweren't ready for.
You know, they were just tryingto come up, they were just
trying to find a way to makesome money.

SPEAKER_02 (07:34):
Right.
Well, you had Carl Drew withStreet Smart because he had left
home and learned how to survive.
Then Robin Murphy, pretty muchthe same thing.
She didn't really like herstepfather, she didn't get along
with her mother.
So she met Andy Maltese, who wasa dirty, nasty old man who
groomed her, raped her, gave herdrugs, and introduced her into

(07:59):
devil worship.

SPEAKER_00 (08:00):
Boom.

SPEAKER_02 (08:01):
And then uh allegedly, Carl Drew.

SPEAKER_00 (08:06):
You gotta do that with these things.

SPEAKER_02 (08:08):
Allegedly, Carl Drew was also into Satan worship, and
then Robin got into it, andquite a few sex workers were
also a part of this cult thatwas happening in Fall River.
Now, there were three murders.
So you had Doreen Levesque,Barbara Wap Raposa, and then

(08:35):
Karen Marzin.
Now, Doreen Levesque had beentied to Carl Drew as basically
one of his, excuse me, not oneof his employees, but as a sex
worker who was pimpless.

SPEAKER_00 (08:53):
They were entrepreneurs, they they wanted
to do their own thing.

SPEAKER_02 (08:56):
And she did not want to be tied down to a pimp.
And allegedly.

SPEAKER_00 (09:02):
Well, they were trying to find her car, right?
There was like, wasn't that?

SPEAKER_02 (09:06):
That was that was another one.
That was cookie.

SPEAKER_00 (09:08):
Oh, that was cookie with the car thing.
But no, she was she was doingher own thing at 17, like roll
rolling her shit, and it waslike, I don't need anybody to
rule me.
I'm gonna I'm gonna get my ownjob.

SPEAKER_02 (09:20):
Well, that was Robin.

SPEAKER_00 (09:21):
That was Robin.

SPEAKER_02 (09:22):
But um, but Doreen Levesque turned up dead.
She had been stoned to death, stoned to death and assaulted.
And um pretty much Karen Marsdencame forward and said, Carl Drew
did it.
And then Barbara Raposa turnedup dead, and Andy Maltese came

(09:51):
to the police and was like, youknow, because at first he was
like, I'm a Satanist.
Then he came to the police andwas like, I'm not affiliated
with the Satanic.
Yeah, I'm getting there.
Yeah, you're getting there.
Huh.
So he came to the police andsaid, you know what, I was uh in

(10:12):
the satanic cult, but now I havefound Jesus, and I have had this
uh psychic dream.

SPEAKER_01 (10:22):
Yeah.

SPEAKER_02 (10:23):
And I seen somebody, you know, basically stone
Barbara to death.
No, it wasn't a stone, it was acinder block.

SPEAKER_00 (10:32):
And that's exactly what fucking killed her.

SPEAKER_02 (10:34):
And a cinder block was the murder weapon, but it
hadn't been released to thepublic.

SPEAKER_00 (10:40):
I'm sipping on that one.

SPEAKER_02 (10:42):
So the police were like, oh, did you just confess
to murder?
That's what they considered it.
Under the guise of a psychicdream.
Yeah.
So he gets arrested.
And then um there were rumorsthat Robin was involved.

(11:02):
And then Karen Marsden, she saidthat it was Carl Drew who had
killed Doreen Levesque and saidthat if she turned up dead, it
was Carl Drew.
And she had sought asylum to achurch, and an officer drove her
there, and that was the last shewas seen.

(11:24):
So Barbara Raposa was the nextto be found murdered.
And then so Andy Maltese wasarrested on her murder.
Doreen Levesque, um, Carl Drewwas arrested for that one, and

(11:46):
then Karen Marsden, who said ifshe turned up dead, it was Carl
Drew.
She turned up dead.
But then Robin Murphy cameforward and was like, I have
some information on BarbaraRaposa and Doreen Levesque, but
then it was later um found outthat she had a part in Karen

(12:12):
Marsden's murder.
So she was like, she made adeal, and she's like, okay,
okay, yeah, I was there and Ihad a hand in it.

SPEAKER_00 (12:20):
But she was in the car with him, right?

SPEAKER_02 (12:22):
She was in the car, and that Carl Drew had made her
do certain things to KarenMarsden.
So she was like, but I haveinformation on these other two
murders, so can we make a deal?
So Carl Drew gets a lifesentence for Doreen Levesque.

(12:50):
And uh and Karen Marsden, Ibelieve.
And then, of course, AndyMaltese, who you know saw
Barbara's murder in a dream, hegets a life sentence for
Barbara.
And then Robin, she gets timefor pretty much being a part of
everything, but she gets put upfor parole later on.

(13:14):
But Andy Maltese, he died inprison like uh just a few years
later.
And then uh Carl Drew, he'sstill in prison.
Excuse me, burps.

SPEAKER_00 (13:26):
You know what's crazy, Lindsay?
You're pulling all this off thedome.
It's like we talked about it,but like you're really nailing
it, like so is it's like that.

SPEAKER_02 (13:41):
I'm amazed over here just well, what's crazy is this
cult, yeah, um, they were in thesummertime, they would go out
into the forest and they wouldsacrifice animals.
And what what is really crazy tome, but a lot of the people that
have covered this and even inthe documentary, they compare a

(14:04):
lot of the things that theseSatanists or devil worshipers
did, how close it was to a lotof Christianity.
So in the summertime, they wouldgo out into the forest and they
would sacrifice animals.
And then in the in the coldermonths of the year, they would
go to a woman's apartment whowas intimately involved with

(14:28):
Robin Murphy.
Her name was Sonny Sparta, andshe had a huge uh painting of
Satan in her house, and theywould use that as an altar that
they would pray to and theywould chant and uh speak in
other tongues, which issomething that I don't know if

(14:49):
you grew up with that, but I didin the Christian community with
Pentecostals and not.

SPEAKER_00 (14:55):
We're not fucking sacrificing animals, and I'm not
saying that I'm a animalsacrifices was in the Bible.
It was a lot.
So maybe they should bring thatshit back to churches.
Just pull in a fucking goat anddo that shit, be like, we're
going old school today, in thename of Jesus.
If I can pull out a goat andkill the shit out of it, and I
mean the blood of the lamb, right?

SPEAKER_02 (15:17):
Well, what's crazy is all three of these murders
were done by stoning, which ismentioned a lot in the Bible.

SPEAKER_00 (15:26):
I mean, there are several, several religious educ
executions that were done bystoning.
Wow.

SPEAKER_02 (15:36):
So here is a little thing.
So um it was a Christian namedStephen who was stoned in the
New Testament.
And supposedly, allegedly, whenhe was dying, he cried out,
Father, into your hands Irelease my spirit.

(16:03):
Into your hands, why have youforsaken me?

unknown (16:09):
What?

SPEAKER_02 (16:10):
Which is lyrics to one of our favorite system of it
down songs called Chopsue.

SPEAKER_00 (16:15):
Oh, you know, that's probably why they took away like
15 books out of that Bible.
I mean, but I ain't trying toshit on no religion and any do
your things.
You do your things.
You know, do it healthy.
But that is don't kill otheranimals.
I don't care.

SPEAKER_02 (16:32):
I mean, that is one of my uh I mean that is one of
everybody who loves System ofDown.
That's one of everybody's songsis Chopsue.

SPEAKER_01 (16:37):
I love you forsaken me.
In your heart forsaken me.
Yeah.
In your eyes, forsaken me.
In your eyes, forsaken me.
Get it, girl.
Go lindsy.

(16:59):
Holy shit.
Some projects.

SPEAKER_00 (17:03):
This is probably gonna sound like shit.

SPEAKER_02 (17:06):
We don't know.
We've been drinking all day.

SPEAKER_00 (17:08):
Yeah.

SPEAKER_02 (17:08):
We've been working and drinking.
Yeah.
We've been home though.
Yeah.
Doing it responsibly.

SPEAKER_00 (17:12):
We do it responsibly.
Come on, man.

SPEAKER_02 (17:15):
And got a lot done.
I made a cheesecake andeverything.

SPEAKER_00 (17:18):
Clean the whole house.

SPEAKER_02 (17:19):
The house, the porch, outside the yard, getting
ready for Thanksgiving.
Strong side.
But, anyways, researching thiscase, it was very, very uh
eye-opening to me.

SPEAKER_00 (17:33):
How similar devil worship and Christianity.
It's just to me, uh I see it,but they're not animals.

SPEAKER_02 (17:42):
Come on, we we're better than that on any they
sacrifice the animals in theBible all the time.

SPEAKER_00 (17:47):
In any religion, don't kill fucking innocent
animals.
Fuck.

SPEAKER_02 (17:50):
No.
Fuck.
Unfortunately, in Karen Mars'murder, there were three cats,
trigger warning, that weresacrificed and their innards
were like spread everywhere.
It was terrible.
It's terrible, terrible, terrible to even think about.

(18:12):
So that, you know, to the policewas ritualistic, satanic.

SPEAKER_00 (18:17):
You don't really fuck with me, Lindsay.
McMartin.
Where you're like, they'retalking about horses and shit.

SPEAKER_02 (18:23):
But that wasn't true.
That was all fabrication.
Yeah, that was all fabrication.
That was lies.
So if you want to know aboutthat, the Mike Martin preschool
trial.
Oh my god, what a story.
Go back.
That was like our secondepisode.

SPEAKER_00 (18:36):
That was our second episode.
I think that was our secondepisode.
It feels like it was a thousandyears ago.

SPEAKER_02 (18:40):
I know.
Second episode.
That is a wild story.
Wild during the satanic panicera.
That's just an era that needs tobe revisited often because it
was crazy.
And I mean, like, people my ageare traumatized by that era in
time.
In fear.
In fear all the time.

SPEAKER_00 (19:00):
We really did.

SPEAKER_02 (19:00):
And what's crazy is this wasn't even really a
satanic hole.
I mean, it was, but it wasn't.
Like, this was just people whoused Satan as a fear-mongering
tactic.

SPEAKER_00 (19:18):
I'm on my page for that.

SPEAKER_02 (19:19):
Well, I mean it's in the it's in the documentary.
You can watch it.

SPEAKER_00 (19:23):
And I talked about it in our podcast about it.
It was just like I felt fullyjust they were using that whole
narrative, and there was a wholeass full-grown man that was
pushing that shit on all theseyoung'uns for them to do
whatever the fuck.

SPEAKER_02 (19:37):
Well, it was like a pyramid.
It all stemmed from AndyMaltese, in my opinion, who
pushed it on to Robin Murphy.
He he started raping her at theage of 11.
He was a grown man.
I'm not sure his exact age, buthe was old.
And then in that I don't andthen him and Carl Drew were also

(19:58):
associated.
I just believed it all stemmedfrom him.
I believe he was the top of thepyramid.

SPEAKER_00 (20:04):
Yeah.
And you'll use that to justifyit.

SPEAKER_02 (20:07):
And then Robin, she was young, but she wasn't that
innocent as she she wanted torule Bedford Street.
She uh she wanted, she used fearand manipulation on people in
that area, on sex workers, onwomen and men alike.
I mean, men feared her.

(20:29):
Men were terrified of RobinMurphy.
And pretty much every sex workeron that street was terrified of
Carl Drew.
So these were three people thatwere kind of powerful in their
little powerful, uh, evil, violent, and they were greatly
feared.
And I think that's pretty muchthe whole reason why they had a

(20:51):
following.
Yeah.
Whatsoever.
And they used the devil as afear-mongering tactic among
people that worked and lived onthat street.
Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 (21:02):
Charismatic psychosis manifest
manifestation.
Manifestation.

SPEAKER_02 (21:06):
Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 (21:07):
And they just used it to for whatever come up they
wanted.
You know, I didn't give a fuck.

SPEAKER_02 (21:12):
Right.

SPEAKER_00 (21:12):
Yeah.
Little crazy ass shit going onthere.

SPEAKER_02 (21:15):
It's just an insane story.
Because you know what?
After all they, after all threeof them got locked up, there
wasn't a satanic Colt and FallRiver anymore.

SPEAKER_00 (21:22):
It was done.
It was done.

SPEAKER_02 (21:24):
Even all the other members, because there was like,
what did I say?
15 to 20.
No, f 20 to 25, something likethat.
Um they didn't, they didn't havemeetings anymore.
Even at Sonny Sparta's house, who did not get locked up.
She was like a madam, like amentor for sex workers because

(21:44):
she had been one, and then shekind of retired out, and she was
basically like a safe haven forother girls, but at the same
time, she was supposedly a Satanworshiper too.
So, and I want to make clear ifyou you can listen to it in the
episode as well.
But the Church of Satan andSatanists are completely

(22:07):
different from devilworshippers.
Satanists are believers inyourself.
They are, they don't believe inGod, they don't believe in the
devil, they don't believe in anyreligious entity whatsoever.
They are pretty much you arethey are the worship of
yourself.

(22:27):
It is all about you.
And I referenced Parks and Rec.
It's a treat yourselforganization, a hundred percent.

SPEAKER_00 (22:36):
I mean, I I get it.

SPEAKER_02 (22:37):
I'm just Well, I was saying, and and if you go back
to our very first number oneepisode, also about the
Corpsewood Manor, we talk aboutit as well.
They were of the Church ofSatan.
It's completely different fromthen devil worship.
Yeah.
Devil worshipers worship thedevil just as Christians worship
God.
Where Satanists are a mockery toreligion and they just they just

(23:03):
love themselves.
They're selfish.
That's it.

SPEAKER_00 (23:05):
Yeah, but either way, don't do anything unhealthy
and use that in the world.

SPEAKER_02 (23:09):
Well, you do what you want to do, but just don't
kill people.

SPEAKER_00 (23:12):
Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_02 (23:13):
When we're talking about like we'll drink to that.

SPEAKER_00 (23:15):
Yeah, like sex, sex magic and and things, you know.
We're this in and that anything, okay.
You can welcome whatever youwant in a healthy way.
If that makes sense.
Does that make sense?

SPEAKER_02 (23:27):
Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 (23:28):
Then that's the only thing that I can I can say.
Whatever religion, do ithealthy.
Don't involve the killing ofanything.
No.
Any animal.
Don't kill animals, don't killpeople.
We're not gonna do that.
Other than that, you know, doyour own.

SPEAKER_02 (23:41):
We don't subscribe to that here.
No, okay.
Do your thing.
We are completely open-minded.
You can do whatever you want aslong as it's legal.
Um, everybody consents.

SPEAKER_00 (23:53):
Consensual.

SPEAKER_02 (23:54):
Consensual.
Yeah.
And uh there is no animal orpeople sacrifice involved.

SPEAKER_00 (23:58):
Yeah.
That's it.
Don't give a fuck about the restof it.
Whatever.
Right.
Whatever.

SPEAKER_02 (24:02):
No murder of uh any species.
Period.

SPEAKER_00 (24:06):
Or people.

SPEAKER_02 (24:07):
Or well, species.
We're a species.

SPEAKER_00 (24:09):
Oh, the whole people species, the whole spectrum
