Last week, I spoke about theToos being too angry, too
fearful, too passive, tooaggressive, or too greedy and
(00:45):
each TOO, T-O-O can be comparedto a parasite.
I explained how being too thisor too that can be a very
dangerous place to live.
It is a neighborhood ofexcessive negativity.
It is a place where garbageaccumulates.
In essence, our minds, bodiesand souls become garbage dumps.
(01:11):
Negativity and fear areparasites that create toxic
waste in our bodies, leading tostarvation and various levels of
mental, emotional andphysiological maladies and,
ultimately, deaths.
Last week, I focused on beingtoo angry.
(01:33):
This week, I will discuss thepersonality of fear and how
being too fearful impacts ourdaily lives.
Fear can be characterized indifferent types and levels.
One definition in Dictionary.
com defines fear as adistressing emotion aroused by
(01:58):
impending danger, evil, pain andso forth.
Whether the threat is real orimagined, it is the feeling or
condition of being afraid.
There's an in-depth articleposted in Simplypsychologically.
com's websit e entitled, "ThePsychology of Fear.
(02:23):
It states that fear is a basicemotional response to a
perceived threat or danger.
It triggers the body's fight orflight response, leading to
psychological or physiologicalchanges like increased heart
rate and adrenaline levels.
(02:44):
Fear, it continues, is anessential survival mechanism,
helping individuals react topotentially life-threatening
situations.
It can respond to immediate, tangible threats and more
abstract or future concerns.
Fear can also be learnedthrough past experiences or
(03:11):
observations.
" Now there are some fearresponses and in this podcast
I'm actually going to focus onthe not-so-immediate threats
from being in a dangeroussituation where you're being
robbed, etc.
Now, the article states veryclearly that there are
(03:33):
biochemical and emotionalresponses to fear.
There is a diagnosis of fear.
There are multiple diagnoses offear.
For a condition associated withfear and anxiety to be
diagnosed, the symptoms must bepersistent, interfere with some
part of normal functioning andcannot be better explained by
another condition.
If feelings of fear becomepersistent and excessive, this
(04:00):
could be diagnosed as a type ofanxiety disorder, depending on
the symptoms being experienced.
Some common disorders which areassociated with fear are
phobias, generalized anxietydisorder, social anxiety
disorder, post-traumatic stressdisorder and panic disorder.
(04:25):
Phobias are defined as beingspecific.
They're known as simple phobias, since they can usually be
linked to an identifiable causeand are unlikely to affect daily
living, as a person can avoidthe triggers.
Examples are the fear ofheights, the fear of spiders,
(04:45):
the fear of closing spaces orplaces, the fear of crowds, the
fear of dying.
PTSD is a mental health disorderthat can develop in people who
have actually experienced orwitnessed traumatic events, such
as a serious car accident, being in military combat, being
(05:08):
physically or sexually assaulted, or experiencing a natural and
catastrophic disaster.
One of the key symptoms of PTSDis experiencing intense fear,
anxiety or distress whenconfronted with reminders of the
traumatic event, even if thepresent situation is not
(05:31):
actually dangerous orthreatening.
This is according to Marin etal 2013.
Social phobias, also known associal anxiety disorder and
agoraphobia, however, are knownas complex phobias, since their
triggers are less easilyrecognizable or avoidable.
(05:55):
Panic disorders are symptomaticof panic attacks.
It is the experiencing ofintense fear responses when
there is no presence or apparentdanger.
It's almost like a false alarmthat can happen when the person
least expects it - one minuteyou're fine, the next minute
(06:16):
you're not.
The response can be so intensethat it results in a panic
attack.
A panic attack can be brief butextreme episodes of
overwhelming fear and intensephysical and emotional reactions
that one may have in responseto a real danger.
Still, it happens in situationsmost people would not be afraid
(06:40):
of.
Panic disorder describes acondition where the person
experiences unexpected panicattacks recurrently, with
persistent worries aboutadditional panic attacks that
lead to maladaptive behavioralchanges related to them,
(07:01):
meaning, again, one minuteyou're okay and the next minute
you're not.
One minute you're calm and thenext minute you're tearful,
you're afraid, you're nervousand anxious.
As a personal witness to peopleexperiencing such attacks, I
(07:23):
can tell you it is evident thatthey can be exhibited by extreme
outbursts of fear, to the pointof the person being frozen in
place, feeling totallyterrorized by doom and
approaching danger that doesn'texist, that comes from nowhere
and everywhere all at once.
I've also experienced myself, what I would call, more subtle
(07:47):
feelings of distress and anxietywithout an identifier, and I am
not a nervous, anxious person.
But there was one period in mylife where I noticed these
feelings and I couldn't explainwhere they were coming from, and
they had to be dealt with.
I was determined not to letthem rule my emotions or the
(08:10):
quality of my life.
Now, in instances like these, the person doesn't know why they
feel the way they do, but thereis some form of trepidation
without a rhyme or reason.
Needless to say, panic disorderor the experience of having
regular experiences of anxietycan throw one into a wheel of
(08:34):
depression.
Feeling out of control is notfun.
It's not a joke and it shouldnot be ignored.
It shouldn't be taken lightly.
(08:57):
There's another disorder termedGeneralized Anxiety Disorder, or
G-A-D or GAD.
Those who experience GAD or GADtypically have persistent and
excessive worries about everydaylife and worry about multiple
things.
They may be fearful about theirhealth, finances, safety,
relationships, regular everydaychores, or duties, or
(09:17):
responsibilities to the pointwhere it can become exhausting.
People with GAD or GAD tend toexperience the physical symptoms
associated with fear, but moreoften and for more reasons.
I feel, at this point, I need toshare Maslow's hierarchy of
needs, and his hierarchymentions five specific levels of
(09:40):
needs in a person's life.
From top to bottom, level one -physiological needs.
As humans we need air, water, food and shelter, sleep, and
(10:13):
clothing to survive, and wereproduce.
The next level, safety needs:
we desire personal security, (10:13):
undefined
employment, resources, healthand property.
The next level (10:14):
love and
belonging.
Humans naturally desirefriendship, intimacy, family and
a sense of connection.
esteem, respect
, self-respect, self-esteem,
status, recognition, strength,and freedom.
And the last and highesthierarchy or level is
(10:36):
self-actualization.
It is a desire to become themost that one can be, maximizing
one's potential, as I would say.
Simply Today's article goes onto say that GAD is twice as
common in women that it is inmen.
Studies in Europe suggest thatGAD, or GAD, has a 12-month
(11:00):
prevalence of around 2% and isone of the most frequently, up
to 10%, diagnosed mental healthdisorders.
People affected by thisdisorder can still have
functional lives, withproductive jobs and social lives
, but internally, these peoplestruggle with worry and distress
(11:25):
.
In summary, I would state thata person that falls in this
category may suffer indefinitelyfrom the fear of not being able
to fulfill the most basic needsor able to fulfill the more
complex.
An example might be the fear offailing on a job or at school.
(11:46):
That person might fear notbeing able to accomplish their
assignments or complete a job onthe job.
That person might fear notbeing able to provide for their
family.
They may feel that the apparenteconomic climate in the world
(12:06):
or in the country has such adynamic effect on their lives
that, no matter what they'redoing, they're failing.
A focus might always be on thenegative and not on the very
real possibility and realitythat all is well.
That same person might feelthat the world is so evil that
they are constantly concernedabout conspiracy theories or
(12:30):
natural catastrophes, spendingtime and excessive thoughts on
what if this happens, or what ifthat happens, and what if I'm
not prepared or good enough.
That person may also never feelup to the task or worthy of
being loved.
And, at the highest level ofMaslow's hierarchy, that person
(12:55):
may never be able to maximizetheir potential because of all
the other pitfalls and traps.
This person just wants tosurvive.
It's not focused on anythingelse.
It's so much about thriving andsurviving, but the person's
(13:15):
focus is on successfullycompleting one minute task that
most of us deal with on a dailybasis as a natural course of
living.
This person just worries, worries about everything,
without a sense of calm orconfidence.
As I continue my focus today, Iwant to focus on those who have
(13:42):
panic attacks and live in dailyfear of not being able to, those
that may fall in the categoryof having General Anxiety
Disorder.
Why am I focusing on these two?
Well, in a previous podcast Itouched on PTSD and these two
(14:06):
disorders t oday, that I want tofocus on, may be a little
harder to deal with because theorigins are not so clear.
Their sources may be hiddenamong layers and layers of
events in life and traumas.
In essence, the fears that arecausing disorders may be more
(14:34):
obscure in origin compared toPTSD and other phobias.
Also, fear and worry may buildand sneak up unawares and
manifest at the most inopportunetimes for reasons that seem
nonsensical to the rest of theworld, to the person's family
(14:56):
and loved ones or friends andco-workers.
Many Christians actually definefear as False Evidence Appearing
Real, and I sort of like that.
Even though every psychologicalissue does have a real origin,
(15:18):
as time progresses, and as fearsmorph, the origins are harder
to define and may not have anyrelationship to the actual
original event that causedeverything, the trickle effect,
the domino effect.
The premise is that one shouldknow that fear, the fear that is
(15:41):
illogical or irrational orexaggerated or truly not
associated with the presentreality, is just an illusion.
In actuality, it can be deemedas an apparition of things
planted in our minds thatcontradict the reality of God.
That fear and our response tofear is evidence of the person
(16:05):
allowing the enemy of our soulto plant lies in our minds.
I think most of us have heardthat the battlefield is in our
mind.
Now Ladies, I'm a very strongperson.
I was born adventurous, ratheraggressive.
and what some might call, FORDtough.
(16:26):
I get knocked down and I bounceback up like it's nothing.
But, I've faced many outrageousevents and traumas that have
challenged my strengths andtruly exposed my weaknesses,
caused me to have to take a goodlook at myself, a look at my
God, and my relationship withhim.
Each time, I come to the sameconclusion - no matter how crazy
(16:55):
the event has been, no matterhow hard I was knocked down,
it's always the same.
It is that God never fails me.
His strength is mine.
His strength is always there tolean on.
He is always there to lean intoand he reminds me of His
(17:18):
promises, that he is faithfuland that his word is fulfilled.
His promises are yea and amen, and he will perform and fulfill
them.
Hence, if you listened to thelast episode, and if not,
(17:41):
hopefully you will, I mentionedDorothy and Toto and Dorothy's
ruby red shoes.
I spoke briefly about herventures into the land of Oz and
how she got there.
Do rothy and Toto werehijacked by Dorothy's fear and
trauma and she was translatedinto the Land of Oz as a result
(18:05):
.
She had been living in a placeof fear in Kansas and landed in
Oz, a foreign place, not knowingwhere or how she was going to
get back to safety.
Where was her safety?
In Kansas, in Oz, in theEmerald City?
She didn't know.
(18:26):
She was consumed with fear andconfusion.
She believed she truly neededthose ruby red shoes, the
symbols of strength andprotection.
So, in actuality, the ruby redshoes was the word of God.
It was the word and herconfidence that led her back to
(18:51):
a place of truth, a place ofsafety and peace and the true
reality of the security she hadin her own home, with family and
, more importantly, with self.
Now, in Oz, we know God was notmentioned, but the ruby shoes
embodied what God does for usand what God gives to us.
(19:11):
And Dorothy found true peaceand strength was hers all along.
It was in her and truth is inus too.
We have to know how we weremade to understand that.
Now, initially in this story,Dorothy ran away in order to
(19:33):
protect her faithful dog, Toto.
I am going to do somecomparisons here.
We are made of flesh.
We are a God-breathed soul anda spirit.
In Genesis, chapter 2, it says,"Jehovah, God formed man from
the dust of the ground andbreathed into his nostrils the
(19:56):
breath of life, and man became aliving soul.
In Zechariah, chapter 12, verse1, it says, "Thus declares
Jehovah, who stretches forth theheavens and lays the
foundations of the earth andforms the spirit of man within
him.
So let's think of Toto asrepresentative of Dorothy's true
(20:21):
spirit, one of loyalty, purityand love.
You see, our spirits are ourGod connection.
Our spirits are the speciallink we have to the divine
nature of God.
Our spirits recognize what weare made of and connect our
minds and emotions to the power, will, love and truth of God.
Our souls are where ourpersonality, emotions, thoughts,
(20:47):
habits and cognitive abilitieslie.
So, I'm going to deem Dorothyas the soul.
We see her operating, we seeher personality, her emotions,
her thoughts, and Toto is theloyal friend, the pure in heart,
the one that reminds her andsaves her and leads her out.
(21:10):
Now, in Maslow's secondhierarchy, the level where
safety needs are discussed,Dorothy's were not being met.
She and Toto's safety, or herand Toto's safety were seemingly
threatened.
She was fearful and intimidated.
In essence, Dorothy's soul hadbeen impacted by the
(21:31):
intimidation and fear of theneighbor that was threatening to
Toto from her.
She was insecure, not confidentin her own abilities.
Her decisions were motivated bythose factors.
In Maslow's fourth level, orhierarchy, where we discuss
(21:52):
esteem, hers was at stake.
Dorothy's soul lived in a cloakof the 'not enough'.
She was not strong enough orconfident enough, not courageous
enough to face her fears or tofight for her own rights, her
own abilities.
She didn't defend herself, shedidn't protect her status.
(22:14):
Those nasty, parasitical Toosruled her soul.
Dorothy felt too intimidated, too insecure, too fearful, too
weak, too unconfident in her ownabilities to address her needs
and protect what was hers.
Her Toos, those uglyparasites, became evident in her
(22:36):
running away from home andultimately being lost in Oz.
Dorothy allowed her soulishthoughts and emotions to rule
her spirit man, the part of herthat knows truth.
Toto was in danger.
Dorothy got carried away, likewe all do sometimes, by false
(22:58):
evidence appearing real.
She ended up in an imaginaryland where she hoped she could
make sense of everything, butwithout the truth that she
needed.
Actually, or in alleventuality, the process where
she was attacked and threatenedand held captive actually led
(23:20):
her to self-discovery.
At first, she was seekinganswers in all the wrong places
until she became self-aware.
Isn't that like us, don't we?
We too often indulge in ourfears and inadequacies instead
of building strength and truth.
Instead of remembering who weactually are and what we're
(23:42):
actually made of, we live infear instead.
We feed fear instead of killingit.
We entertain fear instead ofshutting it down.
We nurture fear instead ofsuffocating it.
We respond to its lure andlust instead of starving it.
The Bible actually mentionsfear, or tells us to not be
(24:05):
afraid, more than a hundredtimes, easily.
One of the most commonly knownscriptures is Joshua 1, verses 8
through 9.
It reads, "the book of the lawshall not depart from your mouth
, but you shall meditate in itday and night.
That you may observe to doaccording to all that is written
(24:28):
in it, for then you will makeyour way prosperous and then you
will have good success.
Verse 9.
Have I not commanded you Bestrong and of good courage, do
not be afraid nor be dismayed, for the Lord, your God, is with
you wherever you go.
" You may say that in this verse, God has sent Joshua into war,
(24:54):
into battle against the enemiesof his people en route to the
Promised Land.
But think about life.
Aren't we all fighting battles?
Are we any different?
Here we are in a world filledwith situations and
circumstances that hurt us, thatbring us down, that seek to
(25:16):
destroy us.
We face challenges and evil allthe time, and we are charged to
live in authority, though, andin the promises of God.
The key takeaway in thatscripture is meditate on God's
work, meditate on him day andnight, follow his way, and we
(25:36):
will prosper.
So, why do we fall short, I ask?
Why do we fall short?
Maybe just because we don'tknow who we are, why we are.
Maybe we don't really know whatwe are made of and, just as
(25:58):
importantly, what we can do andwhat we should be doing, how we
should be living, what we shouldbe believing in.
God's promises are yea and amen, and in Joshua 1, verses 8 and 9
that I just quoted, God givesus one of his promises.
(26:21):
It says or he says, "I will bewith you wherever you go".
So, need we be afraid?
Need we live in constant fear?
Hmm, we're to live inconfidence and in peace.
A nd to support that I'm goingto just share a few more
(26:42):
scriptures.
In Isaiah 41, verse 10, it says,"Fear not, I am with you, be
not dismayed, for I am your God,I will strengthen you, yes, I
will help you, I will uphold youwith my righteous right hand.
" That is God speaking.
(27:03):
Hence.
More promises right here.
God promises to strengthen us,god promises to help us.
God promises to uphold us withhis own right hand.
This verse is so powerful.
It is God promising us, notjust Isaiah, not just the people
(27:24):
of old.
It says whatever we face, hewill strengthen us through it.
He will help us to overcome.
He will walk with us in it.
God reiterates his promises inIsaiah 41: 13.
"For I, the Lord, your God,hold your right hand.
It is I who says to you fearnot, I am the one who helps you.
(27:51):
" In Deuteronomy, chapter 31,verse 8, "it is the Lord who
goes before you.
He will be with you.
He will not leave you orforsake you.
Do not fear or be dismayed.
(28:11):
God reiterates his promises andhis faithfulness over and over
again.
You can read more says,"Deuteronomy, chapter 3, It says,
you should not fear them.
" Who is them?
Anything that comes against us?
"Fo is the Lord, your God, whofights for you.
And in Proverbs 29, God warnsus, "the fear of man lays a
(28:37):
snare, but whoever trusts in theLord is safe.
" So God is stating that fear isa trap.
Fearing other men is a trap.
Fearing what is not of God is atrap, but trusting in God is a
place of safety.
So over and over again, God istelling us that he is with us,
(29:02):
that he protects us, that hecares for us, that we matter to
him.
Fear not.
One way to overcome fear is torespond to God's promises.
We can make a decision, aconscious decision to live in
His promises, believing in Hisfaithfulness, and allowing our
spirits to feed our souls withtruth.
Here in "Bible of America's:
blog, it outlines very concisely (29:26):
undefined
how we're constructed, to helpyou understand who we are as
humans, being made of spirit, soul and body.
It's outlined in two articlesunder their blog: "The Immense
(29:47):
Significance of the Human Spiritand the Three Parts of man
Spirit, soul and Body.
In the spirit, it states, Godas the spirit dwells, in the
soul, our self dwells, and inthe body the physical senses
dwell.
God sanctifies us first, bytaking possession of our spirit
(30:11):
through regeneration, believingin Christ, and that can be read
in John, chapter 3, verses 5through 6.
Second, by spreading himself asa life-giving spirit from our
spirit into our soul to saturateand transform our soul.
(30:36):
That can be read in Romans, chapter 12, verse 2, and in
Corinthians, chapter 3, verses18.
And last, by enlivening ourmortal bodies through our souls,
and that can be read andunderstood in Romans, chapter 8,
verses 11 and 13.
And transfiguring our body byhis life power, evidenced in the
(30:58):
book of Philippians, chapter 3,verse 21, and in first
Thessalonians, chapter 5 verse23.
Now, that verse reads.
" The God of peace Himselfsanctifies you wholly, yes, God
sanctifies us by spreading intoand saturating our entire being.
(31:23):
This process of sanctificationstarts from our spirit-man and
continues into our soul andeventually will include our
bodies.
Then we'll be wholly filledwith God in every part of our
being.
Now, the article continues tosay how we can actually
(31:44):
cooperate with this.
How can we cooperate with God'sintention to saturate our whole
being with himself?
It starts by saying that we canexercise our spirits to contact
God.
It says exercising our spiritto contact God is the key.
Not only does our spirit havethe ability to contact and
(32:07):
fellowship with God, it's alsowhere God dwells within us, yes,
within us.
This means we can turn to himin our own spirit, to fellowship
with him at any moment as we'regoing about our daily lives.
Is that not mind-blowing?
(32:28):
I always find it mind-blowing,even though it's not new to me,
it's exciting to me, it'senergizing to me, it's a comfort
to me that know that at anymoment I can fellowship with him
, for He dwells within me.
We can pray simple prayers, thearticle goes on to state, ask
(32:48):
him how he feels about certainthings, or simply call on his
name and tell him we love him.
We can also read the Bible andeven pray with God's word,
declaring his word, so thatwe're spiritually nourished.
As we exercise our spirits tofellowship with God, more of
(33:10):
God's divine life is added intous and he spreads from our
spirit into our soul.
Our thoughts, feelings anddecisions will become one with
his and will express God toeveryone around us.
This is how he sanctifies usand how his eternal purpose will
be fulfilled.
This is how we learn and arestrengthened to overcome the
(33:34):
daily challenges of life withoutallowing fear and anger and all
those TOOs to overcome us andto rule us.
So, in closing, we need not livein fear.
There is a process, a realprocess of knowing, believing,
(33:54):
trusting and empowering God inour lives that provides us with
peace, comfort, confidence andthe strength we need to overcome
, to thrive and to actuallyfulfill every hierarchy of need
that Maslow outlines, and more.
(34:15):
From glory to glory to glory!!Now, I'll just state a few of
the verses that will give us theconfidence that we need, so you
can hear how God actually spokethrough and to his people and
what we should declare in ourown lives.
And as I read them, as I readthem, I'm actually declaring
(34:39):
them over your life right now.
Isaiah said in Isaiah, chapter12, verse 2, "behold, God is my
salvation.
I will trust and will not beafraid, for the Lord God is my
strength and my song and He hasbecome my salvation.
" My declaration to you is, Godis your very salvation.
(35:07):
In him you will trust and willnot be afraid, for the Lord God
is your strength and your song, and he has become your salvation
.
King David said in Psalm 23,Psalm 27, verse 3, "though an
army encamp against me, my heartshall not fear Though war rise
(35:31):
against me, yet I will beconfident".
This is one of my favoritePsalms and I declare it over
you, though an army encampagainst you your heart will not
fear, though war rises againstyou, yet you will be confident.
Apostle Paul said in 1Corinthians, chapter 16, verse
(35:53):
13, "be watchful, stand firm inthe faith, act like men, be
strong.
" And in thus saying act likemen, he was referring to any
child of God to be strong.
He was saying all those whobelieve, be watchful, stand firm
(36:16):
in the faith.
I declare over your life rightnow, act like a child of God,
know God, and be strong.
Solomon said in Proverbs 12,verse 25, "Anxiety in a man's
heart weighs him down, but agood word makes him glad".
Be glad in knowing that youhave the heart of God,
(36:44):
The Angel Gabriel said to Maryin Luke, chapter 1, verse 30,
"Do not be afraid Mary, for youhave found favor with God.
"And I speak to you, do not be
afraid, for you have the favorof God and man.
Jesus said in John, chapter 14,"Let not your heart be troubled,
(37:05):
believe in God, believe also inMe.
Hence, we are to confess whatJesus said over ourselves.
And I say to you, let yourheart not be troubled, but
believe in God, believe in JesusChrist, the Savior of your soul
.
In John 14, verse 27, Jesussays, "My peace I leave with you
(37:27):
.
My peace I give to you.
Not as the world gives do Igive to you.
Let not your heart be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
" And I speak the peace of JesusChrist over you now, that you
will live in his peace, for hegives it to you freely, it is
not from the world, it is of Him.
(37:48):
Therefore, do not let yourheart be troubled and do not be
afraid, for the peace of ChristJesus is yours.
And in Mark, chapter 5, it says,"Again, but overhearing what
they said, Jesus said to theruler of the synagogue, 'do not
(38:13):
fear, only believe'.
" So I speak to you, fear not, believe in the word of God, for,
it i s true and faithful.
The Apostle Paul said inPhilippians, chapter 4, verses
10 through 13, and listencarefully, "I rejoice in the
Lord greatly that now, at length, you have revived your concern
for me.
You were indeed concerned forme, but you had no opportunity.
(38:45):
Not that I am speaking of beingin need for I have learned in
whatever situation I am to becontent.
Hear those words.
In whatever situation, I am tobe content.
I know how to be brought lowand I know how to abound.
In any and every circumstance Ihave learned the secret of
facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need.
And I can do all things throughhim, (meaning Jesus) who
strengthens me.
" So I say you can do all thingsthrough Christ Jesus, who
(39:05):
strengthens you.
So, you see, feed your soul byprayer and proclaim the Word of
God so that your spirit manconnects with your entire being,
that your spirit man connectsyour entire being to God: your
creator, your savior, yourprovider, your helper and your
(39:28):
protector.
I hope the words that I'vespoken are seeds to your soul.
