(00:15):
Hey, my friends, sometimes when I sit down to
think of what I want to talkabout on here, I feel this
overwhelming sense of like, whatdo you even say? Like, so much
of the problems that people faceare either caused by or made
worse by systemic issues, andthere's nothing I can say that
(00:39):
can fix that. There is nothought work that will suddenly
solve all of these systemicissues.
And it feels so overwhelming.
I'll tell you, after this latestelection in the US, I felt
completely overwhelmed. I feltunsafe. I suddenly found myself
(01:05):
wanting to make break glass, worst case scenario plans to try
to protect myself. But everytime I tried to do that, I
became overwhelmed with griefand I just couldn't. It was
overwhelming because theselarge, systemic issues are no
(01:25):
one person's responsibility. Noone person can single handedly
change them. These are thingsthat will be solved by 1000s and
1000s of people over the courseof decades. Look at civil rights
issues. There have been 1000supon 1000s of civil rights
(01:47):
activists from the 60s throughtoday and will continue into the
future. There is no quick fixfor a lot of these things. And
the thing I find helpful to comeback to when faced with these
overwhelming things, is to bringit back to what is actually in
my control. We talk a lot onhere about only taking
(02:12):
responsibility for what is inyour control, usually in the
context of dealing with otherpeople, but it also works with
systems and their issues. Youmight not be able to single
handedly stop the planet fromboiling alive, but you can focus
on doing your part to changethings. You can focus on what
(02:36):
you are able to do, because thatis the only thing in your
control. You can't control otherpeople or necessarily policies
or any of that stuff, but you can control what you do.
(03:17):
I also think it's importantto remember that we don't know
the future. So even if it feelslike we're doomed or nothing
will ever change, we don't knowthat. It's easy for, say,
scientists to predict that it'stoo late to change the course of
climate change. But for all weknow, 15 years from now, someone
(03:41):
could invent something thatallows us to do just that. Like,
all we can say is thatcurrently, right now, they can't
see a way to change thetrajectory. That doesn't mean it
can't or won't be changed.
(04:03):
Because we don't know what wedon't know. And there could be a
game changer right around thecorner. Like if you would have
asked people, before theairplane was invented, if people
would ever fly, they would havesaid, No, it's impossible for
(04:26):
people to fly. But it wasn'timpossible. It was just
impossible for them at thattime. So for whatever seemingly
daunting situation you arefacing, whether that is being
overwhelmed with systemic issuesor just being overwhelmed at the
(04:47):
shittiness of your family courtpolicies or whatever, always
remind yourself that change isthe one constant, and just
because something seems stuckone way now doesn't mean that it
will always be that way. And youcan stay in your power by
(05:10):
focusing on what you can do andwhat is inside of your control
and leave the rest alone. Therest, it isn't yours.
To get out of my post electionoverwhelm, that is what I had to
do. I had to remind myself thatmaking these worst case
(05:30):
scenarios wasn't helpful becausethey hadn't happened yet, and
they might never happen. BecauseI don't actually know the
future. And there are so manyfactors that I couldn't possibly
predict that are and will comeinto play that to to even try to
predict it would be pointless. Ihad to take it back to what I
(05:55):
could control. I had to live mylife in the present and focus on
things I could do for myself inthe now.
So that's what I've beenfocusing on.
What can I do right now to livemy best life? What does living
my best life look like today?
What can I do today to make mylife easier or better? It's XYZ
(06:18):
happened. Now, what am I goingto do about it? It's staying in
the present and dealing with thethings that I can deal with and
not worrying about the future.
Because there really isn'tanything I can do about the
(06:40):
future until it arrives. Therereally only ever is the present.
So that is where I need to putmy focus. If something happens,
I will handle it. But until itdoes, it is not my concern.
It can't be because trying topredict every way that something
(07:10):
could go wrong is a one wayticket to crazy town. So that's
what I have for you this week,my friends, stay in the present
(07:30):
and focus only on what isactually in your control. This
is how we find peace admits thechaos. All right, my friends.
Until next time, be well.
