This is the DTVC Podcast, official podcast of the Direct to Video Connoisseur. We do a lot of action movies, plus other genres of DTV films, including horror, sci-fi, comedy, and erotic thrillers, both recent and from the 80s and 90s. Every week we tackle a new DTV film or topic. Drop us a line with comments and suggestions.
We're joined once again by Jon Cross from the PM Entertainment Podcast and the After Movie Diner, this time to discuss a Joan Severance/C. Thomas Howell erotic thriller double feature, with "Dangerous Indiscretion" and "Payback." Before that though, Jon tells us about his recent foray into the DTV world with the movies "Mafia" and "Pistol Whipped." Then, after a break, we get into the ero...

Then with "Santa's Slay," we talk about Bill Goldberg as a wrestler, and how this movie was a departure from his wrestling persona-...
"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some weeks in addition to the main podcast. In this episode I'm looking at "Ballerina" after finally watching it on Starz. I get into how I missed it when it was in the theater, and then how much I wished I hadn't as I was watching the film on the small screen. I then try to break down why a movie that was so good didn't do as well at...
It's that time again! We're joined by Mitch from the Video Vacuum for his annual Christmas visit. This year we're discussing the Debbie Rochon/John Russo film "Santa Claws." In addition to the film, we talked a bit about Rochon's career, and the low budget horror movie ecosystem in the 90s. Then we continue our holiday tradition of discussing Mitch's holiday tradition, which is watching the Dan Haggert...

We discuss a bit about Adkins and Zaror and what makes them so good, and then we get stuck in on the film, walking you through all the great stuff--with perhaps a classic TV tangent or two!

Screenwriter Tom Jolliffe is back to discuss his newest film, "Death Among the Pines," which is available now to rent on Amazon for $2.99 here in the States. The first half is a spoiler-free conversation about the film, so even if you haven't watched the movie yet, you can listen safely. Then after a break, I ask some questions that do contain spoilers, so be careful if you haven't seen it yet.

"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some weeks in addition to the main podcast. In this episode I'm looking at the two latest entries in the Predator franchise, "Killer of Killers" and "Badlands". With the first one, I get into what I like, and what I don't like--and what I don't like is rather prodigious, enough for me to go on a rant. After a break I get int...
We're joined this week by screenwriter Richard Pierce, as we look at the Don "The Dragon" Wilson classic "Capitol Conspiracy." We jump right in and get after it, discussing all the things that work, including some happy accidents that added to the film's vibe. We also get into the current experience of going to the movies, and why retro screenings are often a better bet than gambling on some...

Then with "Maniac Cop," we get stuck in on some of the elements around policing that this...
Scott Murphy from All 90s Action, All the Time and New Horror Express is back to discuss another Steven Seagal DTV flick, this time "Today You Die." Seagal as some kind of Robin Hood ends up caught up in some armored car heist and finds himself in prison. Luckily Treach takes a liking to him and helps him get out, now he just needs to get revenge on the baddies and make off with the cash. Do we at least get Seagal doing a poor soun...
Ty from Comeuppance Reviews is back for his monthly spot on the pod, but this time as we're continuing our "On the Skids" series, we thought "on the skids" wasn't strong enough for Mickey Rourke, so we're going with "to Oblivion." The two DTV Rourke films are, "Jade" with Shaina West and Mark Dacascos, and "Hunt Club" with Mena Suvari and Casper Van Dien. The thing is, both of these have a level of polish and earnestness that put t...

Then with "Black Dynamite" we talked about how that movie works on so many levels; and w...
In this episode Sean Malloy of "I Must Break This Podcast" is back, and we're discussing another Van Damme DTV flick, 2003's "In Hell." We look at Van Damme's collaborations with Ringo Lam, and how this was different from a lot of other films Van Damme had done. We also discuss what the DTV world was like back in 2003, and how a film like this could compete with big blockbusters like X2 in the video store.

Ty from Comeuppance Reviews is back for his monthly spot on the pod, this time we're continuing our "On the Skids" series with our first Oscar winner, Morgan Freeman. The two DTV Freeman films are, "57 Seconds" with Josh Hutcherson, and "Gunner" with Luke Hemsworth. Are they skids enough for Morgy? And then our spotlight on a fight looks at the end fight between Dolph and Cary Tagawa in "Showdown in Little Tokyo."

Scott Murphy from All 90s Action, All the Time and New Horror Express is back to discuss another Steven Seagal DTV flick, this time "Submerged." It's Seagal in on a sub? I guess for 20 minutes or so. It's Seagal v Gary Daniels? I guess, one quick fight. It's Seagal in Uruguay? I guess it says Uruguay, but the country is nothing like Uruguay. Do we at least get Seagal doing a poor sounding, racially appropriati...

In the first part I look at the successes of the Infinity Saga, and how Disney wanted Kevin Feige to "Feed the Monster" post pandemic, especially with the launch of Disney+. While there are still successes in the early part of Phase 4...

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
