Episode 39: What’s Juniors? with Mike Ashley

The star of his Nunaka Valley Elementary School club team in the 60’s, Mike Ashley went on to cut his teeth in the Saskatchewan Junior League for the Weyburn Red Rings. That rough and tumble, rise and grind experience would pay dividends when he traded his stick for a clipboard. Coach Ashley amassed 10 state high school championships during his tenure behind the bench at Dimond (head), Service (assistant) and South Anchorage (head). He was also an assistant bench boss to Brush Christianson at UAA in the early 80’s and took the helm of the Anchorage Aces for the 1992-1993 season.   Now retired from both coaching and teaching Mike is still heavily involved with USA Hockey as a Pacific District Evaluator for Alaska. He officiates youth/adult hockey and volunteers at high school hockey games as an off-ice official.     The 2019 Alaska High School Hall of Fame inductee has honest and intelligent takes on all the hot button topics about the state of Alaska hockey. Forever the rink rat, this rat has stories. A lot of stories!
