Sunday sermons from the Emmanuel Baptist Church of Elkhorn, Wisconsin
Paul prays that the Ephesians would know the full measure of what they have in Christ. Since Jesus has risen and ascended believers have abundant spiritual blessings, which we must come to know and experience more and more.
The triune Lord is praised for his mercy and grace in salvation. Since God has accomplished this great redemption and placed us in Christ by the self-giving of his Son and the sealing of the Spirit, we ought to glorify him and give him praise.
Paul’s ministry in Ephesus was gospel-focused and gospel-powered to the glory of God. Since the word of God is powerful to save and keep all who believe, we must commit ourselves to making disciples and teach them to trust in and follow the Scriptures.
Paul’s sermon in Athens focuses on knowing and worshiping the one, true God. Since Jesus is the Man sent from God who will judge the earth, we must turn from our sinful self-directed worship and bow before the true God.
Jesus, risen from the dead, has power to save all who turn from sin to trust in his name. Since Jesus is demonstrated to be the Son of God by his resurrection from the dead, we must believe in his name to be forgiven and receive the hope of the restoration to come.
Israel’s history as a people bears witness to God’s enduring plan of redemption. Since the Lord purposed to bring salvation to the world through Abraham and his descendants, we ought to repent of our sin and trust in the Savior whom he has sent.
Jacob and Joseph both died believing the future fulfillment of God’s blessed promises. Since faith is founded on God’s faithfulness and the certainty of his promises, we must hold confidently to his words and judge present circumstances in light of our future hope.

Jacob’s sons are distinguished by their individual natures and the work of God’s grace. Since the Lord uses men and women of godly character to serve his people, we must grow in faith and dependence on him to experience his blessing and do his will.
Jacob shows faith in God’s word and hope for future generations according to his will. Since the Lord has been faithful from generation to generation, we must trust him for our present need and maintain hope for the future according to his goodness and wisdom.
By wisdom Joseph guided his family to Goshen and led Egypt through the deadly crisis. Since the Lord by his providence prepared and placed Joseph to save his family and nation, his people can trust him to fulfill all his covenant promises through every situation.
God’s plan for Jacob’s family included nationhood and possession of the land of Canaan. Since the Lord’s plans stretch far beyond the circumstances and lifetime of any individual or family, we can trust him for justice and respond with grace and forgiveness to others.
Joseph’s brothers accepted responsibility for their sins and pled for mercy. Since repentance requires a determination of change when the opportunity for sin presents itself, we must turn away from sin and demonstrate true repentance in following Jesus.
Remember that Christ’s saving work reconciles believers to God and one another. Since we easily forget the work of God’s grace in us and for us, we must intentionally remember what Christ has accomplished that we might become what we ought in him.

Joseph met his brother after 20 years and began to test them for genuine repentance. Since the Lord is able to keep his word and bring about spiritual change, even if it is delayed for many years, we must continue to trust him and remain faithful to his plan.
The Lord brought about circumstances to bless Joseph and use him to save his family. Since the Lord works by means of his unseen hand, we must be faithful and trust him to place us in the right place and time to do his work for his glory.
The Lord was working while Joseph waited in prison. Since God’s providence is always active, yet unseen, we must trust his word rather than our circumstances and take advantage of every opportunity to minister his truth.
Jesus gave up the full glory of heaven while on earth before returning to the Father. Since Jesus has again been glorified with the glory he possessed in eternity past, we ought to believe in him and worship him all the more for his humility and condescension.
