Peter was a brash guy, quick to act, not think! He made some pretty bad decisions during all the goings on of Jesus's last week here on earth! He even denied Christ during his crucifixion out of fear of what might happen to him being associated with Jesus!
Despite all of Peter's bad decisions and habits we see him develop into a great leader in the church!
