Este es un programa importante de la terrible historia de la Cuba tiranizada de los últimos 60 años: Las UMAP. Las UMAP, sigla de Unidades Militares de Ayuda a la Producción, como tantas cosas de la Cuba maledictiana, no fueron lo que oficialmente en su momento se dijo de ellas —y todavía hoy a más de 50 años todavía se dice—, establecimientos militares destinados a producción agrícola, o simples granjas correccionales (como cuando no les queda mas remedio que admitir), sino que fueron reclusorios, campamentos de trabajo forzado, "bañados" por uno de los tantos eufemismos oficialistas en el afán de hacer potable su imagen. Por tanto, según han testimoniado a lo largo de décadas algunos de sus sobreviviente, las UMAP en realidad fueron tenebroso campos de concentración castristas, en los que se encarceló y se martirizó a estratos de la sociedad cubana de entonces, que el "gobierno" comunista consideraba perniciosos para el desarrollo de su agenda política. Entre los recluidos allí a la fuerza, detenidos en las llamadas "recogidas" —que no eran otra cosa que atroces redadas violatorias de los derechos humanos—, estuvieron básicamente jóvenes varones perseguidos por manifestar fe religiosa en una variedad de credos —Cuba comunista es oficial y constitucionalmente un estado ateo—, sobre todo Testigos de Jehová, posiblemente los mas escarnecidos de los cautivos, y los homosexuales, sobre los que cayó con inusitada fuerza el peso de las autoridades. Sin embrago, voceros de la dictadura, como Mariela Castro, desvisten de la severidad que caraterizó a la UMAP, y las definen como un fenómeno "sobredimensionado" y "distorsionado" por el exilio cubano —esta directa incluye precisamente esas opiniones de Mariela Castro—.
