La Sociedad Americana de Medicina Reproductiva ha definido el término “infertilidad” como la imposibilidad de generar un embarazo clínico luego de intentarlo activamente por, al menos, un periodo de doce meses. Dicha Sociedad, al igual que la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) y otras organizaciones profesionales, han catalogado la infertilidad como una enfermedad. Más sin embargo, los altos costos de estos tratamiento no son cubiertos por los planes médicos en Puerto Rico, lo que resulta imposible para la mayoría de las personas que desean ser madres o padres.
