Speaker 2 (00:17):
Welcome to the Electric Spirit Podcast.
This is a special Halloweenepisode and I'm your host,
psychic Medium, jamie Lynn.
Today we're diving into one ofthe most infamous and chilling
stories in paranormal historythe Amityville Horror.
This tale has captivatedaudiences for decades, sparking
debate, skepticism and intrigue.

(00:38):
So grab your favorite autumnbeverage, dim the lights and
let's unravel this eerienarrative together.
The true story behind theAmityville Horror.
In 1974, the quiet town ofAmityville, new York, was rocked
by a gruesome tragedy.
The DeFeo family, consisting ofsix members, were murdered in

(01:00):
their home by their eldest son, ronnie DeFeo Jr.
He claimed voices had compelledhim to commit the heinous act.
This shocking crime set thestage for what would become a
legend.
Just a year later, in Decemberof 1975, the Lutz family moved
into the DeFeo house.
George and Kathy Lutz, alongwith their three children, were

(01:24):
initially thrilled by their newhome, but soon they began to
experience unsettlingoccurrences.
They reported strange noises, cold spots and a feeling of
being watched.
George, in particular, becameincreasingly agitated, even
claiming to wake up at 3 15 amevery night the same time the

(01:47):
DeFeo family was murdered.
As the days turned into weeks, the situation escalated.
The Lutz children claimed tosee a pair of red eyes peering
at them from the darkness andthey felt an overwhelming sense
of dread.
In the house, kathy, the mother, experienced strange visions,

(02:08):
including the apparition of aghostly figure.
The family ultimately fled thehouse just after living there
for 28 days, convinced they werebeing tormented by malevolent
forces.
Now this house was a Dutchcolonial.
It's probably around, I heard.
It's over 3 000 square feet, about five bedrooms, and it has

(02:30):
a boathouse and it's on thewater.
Okay, and the let's a storyquickly caught media attention,
transforming it into a nationalsensation.
And then, in 1977, jay ansonpublished the amityville horror,
which dramat dramatized theLutz's experience, and this book
not only cemented the Lutz'sstory in pop culture, but also

(02:53):
spawned a series of films Ithink there was five or more up
to date or to date that havekept the tale alive for
generations.
However, the Lutz's experienceshas been subject of intense
scrutiny, and skeptics havepointed to inconsistencies in

(03:13):
their accounts and evensuggested that the family
fabricated the haunting toprofit from the tragedy.
In 1979, a polygraph testindicated that George Lutz might
have been exaggerating.
Despite this, the familymaintained their story and the
legend of the Amityville Horroronly grew, and five months after

(03:34):
, the Lutz family left.
Ed and Lorraine Warren arrivedat the Amityville home to
conduct an investigation intowhat had tormented the family.
Conduct an investigation intowhat had tormented the family
and, according to the Warren'scase files, ed was physically
assaulted or pushed to theground and Lorraine felt a deep

(03:55):
sense of something demonic inthe home and was overcome with
visions of the DeFeo family andtheir bodies lying on the floor.
The Warrens also captured aphoto of a demon child standing
in the home's basement and Iknow this might be hard to hear,
but you could probably look inthe transcripts of the show, but

(04:18):
this is a short interview ofLorraine Warren talking about
the Amityville Horror House.
So, lorraine Warren.

Speaker 1 (04:25):
She was a clairvoyant and her a normal investigator.

Speaker 2 (04:55):
So she's claiming that if you could hear it it's
kind of hard to understand alittle bit, the audio is not
real clear, but she's saying ifyou gave her a billion dollars
she wouldn't stay in the houseand she said there were demonic
forces there.
I also saw an interview withher saying you know, of course,

(05:17):
given the circumstances of whathappened there, there's just so
much bad energy there and shesaid she'd never go back into
the house.
And they did have a lot offrightening experiences.
I think in that clip I justplayed she said her body
levitated off the floor.
So it's very interesting.
So the Warrens determined thatthere were demonic forces in the

(05:40):
home because they did aparanormal investigation there
and the Lutz family ultimatelysold the property.
And what happened to the LutzesI just want to tell you.
They sold the property andmoved to California.
So the Warrens thought therewas something there, but they
didn't investigate until afterthe Lutzes left, of course.
So according to the New YorkPost, the house has had about

(06:04):
four or more owners since theLutzes left probably more by now
and there have been no furtherreports of paranormal activity.
But the Warrens claim to haveencountered numerous paranormal
phenomenon when investigatingthe house, including disembodied
voices and unexplained coldspots.

(06:26):
One particular infamousinvestigation with the Warrens
they claim to have ghostlyevidence on film.
Like I said, the demon childand I think Lorraine, or some
people think that they believeit could be the spirit of the
deceased to fail children, thinkthat they believe that it could

(06:47):
be the spirit of the deceasedDeFeo children.
But anyways, today theAmityville Horror House is still
a site of interest and whilethe current owners have tried to
distance themselves from thehaunting, the property is often
the subject of tours and ghosthunting expeditions, keeping the
story alive in the collectiveconsciousness.
And then Ronald DeFeo Jr, theone who killed his family,

(07:12):
actually died in prison March12th of 2021.
There is an interestinginterview with him on YouTube if
you're looking to see moreabout him.
To see more about him.
They claimed he was a modelperson in prison, so kind of
interesting.

(07:34):
But you know there'spsychological impact on all this
too.
So you know what is it aboutthe Amityville Horror House that
continues to captivate us?
Well, on one hand, it's atragic story of family torn
apart by violence and fear, buton a deeper level, it taps into
our primal fears of the unknownand the idea that our homes,
which should be sanctuaries, canbecome places of terror.
Psychologically, the phenomenonof haunting can also be

(07:57):
examined through the lens oftrauma, and the Lutz family
experienced a significant lifechange after the DeFeo murders
and it's possible that theirfears and anxieties manifested
into supernatural experiences.
That's what some people believe.
That's not what I believe.
This interplay between realityand perception some feel, or

(08:18):
some psychologists call hauntedexperiences, where stress and
trauma distort our understandingof our environment.
So you know, the cultural impactin modern interpretations of
the Amityville Horror House hasbeen a lasting impact on pop
culture and beyond the books andthe movies.
It has influenced countlessdocumentaries, podcasts and even

(08:41):
art.
The story has become atouchstone in discussions about
the nature of evil and thequestions of whether we're alone
in the universe.
And we look at moderninterpretations, we see how the
narratives have evolved.
I mean new films and seriescontinue to reinterpret the
Lutz's experience, sometimeswith a critical eye that

(09:02):
challenges the authenticity oftheir claims, while other times
amplifying the supernaturalelements to frighten audiences.
Moreover, the case has sparkeddebates around the ethics of
horror storytelling,particularly the
commercialization of tragedy.
And should the DeFeo murdersand the Lutz family experiences

(09:24):
be turned into entertainment, ordoes this trivialize the very
real pain involved?
You know that's one question weneed to ask.
So you know it looks like, youknow, as as we look into the
Amityville horror house we'rekind of left with more questions
than answers.
I mean, was the house trulyhaunted or was it a product of
psychological distress?

(09:44):
I feel the home was trulyhaunted.
I feel that there were evilspirits talking to Ronald DeFeo
Jr and I feel like he probablyhad a mental illness.
But I also feel like there areevil spirits in that house, or
there were, and that they hadsomething to do with him killing

(10:05):
his family.
That's what I feel as a psychic, and so you know.
But we're really drawn to thesestories and perhaps the real
horror lies not in thesupernatural elements but in the
very way.
You know human emotions of fear, loss and grief resonate
throughout this tale too.
So, like Lorraine Warren said, there was so much stuff that

(10:29):
went on in there, how could itnot be haunted?
So I do agree with that.
The other thing I wanted tomention is this house was on the
water and that's a portal forthings to come in.
Usually, if you also livearound the water, it can also
make you very psychic.
So it's interesting.

(10:50):
I feel like there are a lot ofportals in this home, and then
the water is also a portal.
They claimed in the basementthere was some mysterious room
down there and who knows?
I feel like that's even aportal too.
I did do an automatic writingsession where I channeled Ronald
DeFeo, who is in the spiritworld.

(11:11):
He's on the other side and Iasked it Ronald, if you're here,
I'd like to understand why youtook your family's lives in the
Amityville Horror House.
Now, as I was channelingautomatic writing, I wrote, or
he made me write, or whatever.
I channeled him.

(11:31):
It said they made me do it, theevil ones.
And then I asked who are they?
Can you describe them?
And then, channeling RonaldDeFeo through automatic writing,
it said shadows, voices in thedark.
They promised me power.

(11:52):
And then I asked did you feelthat you had a choice?
Were you in control?
And then the automatic writingsays no, I couldn't escape them.
They took over my mind.
And then I asked were youafraid of these spirits?
And then, through automaticwriting and channeling, it said

(12:15):
he was terrified.
They wouldn't let him go.
He thought it was the only way.
And then I asked do you thinkthe house had anything to do
with it.
And then, through automaticwriting and channeling, it said
the house is a trap, it feeds onfear, it let them in.
So I guess the fear let them in.

(12:37):
And then I asked are you sorry?
Were you sorry for what you didin this life?
And then automatic writing andchanneling said sorry, question
mark.
They made me their puppet.
I was just a tool.
And then I asked is thereanything you want to say to your
family?
And through automatic writingand channeling, I wrote I wish I

(13:02):
could have saved them.
So that was the channelingsession with Ronald DeFeo Jr,
which I thought was reallyinteresting and I really believe
that there was something there.
I don't feel that the Lutzeswere lying about it.
I feel like they did experiencesomething.
And so I'm going to just readan excerpt of the Amityville

(13:25):
Horror Book by Jay Anson.
Okay, so this is on page 114.
I'm going to read some pageshere.
After putting Missy to sleep, which was one of their children,
kathy the mother, returned tothe living room.
George, the father, made hisusual tour of the house, now,
double-checking every window anddoor.

(13:46):
He had already inspected thegarage, the boathouse, and he
took Harry the dog outside.
Let's see what happens tonight.
He told Kathy when he came backdown it's not blowing at all
out here by 10 pm.
Both George and Kathy werefeeling drowsy.
His blazing fire was runningout, but the heat was affecting

(14:08):
their eyes.
She waited until George hadpoked out the last embers of the
fire and poured water over somestill smoldering pieces of wood
.
Then Kathy turned off thechandelier and looked around to
take her husband's hand into thedarkness.
Then she screamed.
Kathy was looking past George'sshoulder at the living room

(14:30):
windows.
Steering back at her were apair of unblinking red eyes.
As his wife screamed, georgewhirled around.
He also saw the little beadyred eyes staring directly into
him.
He jumped for the light switchand the eyes disappeared in the
shining reflection of the glasspane.

(14:50):
Hey, george, shouted.
He burst through the front doorand into the snow outside.
The windows of the living roomfaced the front of the house.
It didn't take George more thana second or two to get there.
There was nothing at thewindows.
Kathy, he shouted, get myflashlight.
George strained his eyes to seetoward the back of the house in

(15:13):
the direction of the AmityvilleRiver where they lived, and
Kathy came out of the house withhis flashlight in his parka,
standing beneath the windowwhere they had seen the eyes.
They searched the fresh,unbroken snow.
Then the yellow beam of theflashlight picked up a line of
footprints extending cleararound the corner of the house.

(15:35):
No man or woman made thosetracks.
The prints had been left bycloven hoofs like those of an
enormous pig.
Wow, when George came out ofthe house in the morning, the
cloven hoof tracks were stillvisible in the frozen snow.
The animal's footprints ledright past Harry's compound,

(15:59):
ended at the entrance of thegarage.
George was speechless when hesaw that the door to the garage
was almost torn off its metalframe.
George himself had closed andlocked the heavy overhead door.
To wrench it away from theframe would not only have
created a great racket but itwould require the strength far
greater than a human being.

(16:20):
George stood in the snowstaring at the tracks in the
wrecked door.
His mind raced to the morningwhen he had found the front door
torn open and the night he hadseen the pig standing behind
Missy at her window.
He remembers saying out loudwhat the hell is going on around
here.
As he squeezed past the twisteddoor into the garage.

(16:44):
He turned on the light andlooked about.
The garage was still packedwith his motorcycle, the
children's bicycles, an electriclawnmower that had been left by
the DeFeos, the old gas-poweredmachine he had brought from
Deer Park garden furniture, tools, equipment, cans of paint
and oil.
The concrete floor of thegarage was covered with a light

(17:05):
dusting of snow that had driftedin through the partly open door
.
Obviously it had been off itsframe for several hours.
Is anybody in here?
George shouted.
Only the sound of whistlingwind outside the garage answered
him.
By the time George drove off tohis office, he was more angry
than frightened.
If he had any tear of theunknown, it had been dismissed

(17:29):
by the thought of what it wasgoing to cost him to repair the
damaged door.
He didn't know if the insurancecompany would pay him for
something like this and he justdidn't need $200 or $ dollars of
extra expense.
George doesn't recall how heever maneuvered the Ford van
over the dangerous snow and icecovered roads to Sussex I hope

(17:53):
I'm pronouncing that right.
It's a city.
His frustration at being unableto comprehend his bad luck
blocked out any concern for hisown safety At the office.
He quickly occupied himselfwith his immediate problems and
then for the next several hourswas able to put away any
thoughts about 112 Ocean Avenue.

(18:14):
I think they now changed theaddress to 108 Ocean Avenue
because they don't want peoplecoming to look at the house.
Before he left home, george hadtold Kathy about the garage door
and the tracks in the snow.

(18:34):
She started calling her mother, but there was no answer.
Then Kathy remembered that Joanhad always shopped on Friday
mornings.
Rather than buck the Saturdaycrowds of the supermarket, she
went upstairs to her bedroomintending to change the linen in
all the rooms and vacuum therugs.
Kathy's mind raced with thedetails of thoroughly cleaning
her house for the first time.

(18:54):
If she didn't occupy herselfcompletely until George returned
, she knew she'd fall to pieces.
She had just finished puttingsome fresh cases on her pillows
and was plummeting them.
Plumping them, I'm sorry.
And then she was embraced frombehind.
She froze and theninstinctively called out Danny.

(19:18):
She thought it was one of thekids.
The grip around her waisttightened.
It was stronger than thefamiliar woman's touch she had
experienced in the kids.
The grip around her waisttightened.
It was stronger than thefamiliar woman's touch she had
experienced in the kitchen.
So Kathy was touched beforeKathy sensed that a man was
holding her increasingly and thepressure was intense as she

(19:39):
struggled Let me go, please.
She whimpered.
The pressure eased suddenly andthen the hands released her
waist.
She felt them move up to hershoulders.
Slowly her body was beingturned around to face the unseen
presence In terror.
Kathy became aware of theoverwhelming stench of the same
cheap perfume she smelledearlier.

(20:01):
Then another pair of handsgripped her wrists.
Kathy says she sensed a strugglegoing on over the possession of
her body, that somehow she hadbeen trapped between two
powerful forces.
Escape was impossible and shefelt she was going to die.
The pressure on her body becameoverwhelming and Kathy passed

(20:22):
out.
When she came to she was lyinghalf off the bed with her head
almost touching the floor.
Danny had come into the room toanswer her call.
Kathy knew the presences weregone and she couldn't have been
out more than a moment.
Call daddy at the office.
Danny Hurry.
Danny returned in a few minutes.

(20:43):
The man on the telephone saysDaddy just left.
He thinks he's coming back here.
George did not come back to thehouse until early afternoon when
he reached Amityville.
He drove up to Merrick Roadtoward his street and stopped
off at the Witch's Brew for abeer.
The neighborhood bar was warmand empty.
The jukebox and television setwere silent and the only sounds

(21:06):
in the place were those of thebartender washing the glasses.
When George entered, the manlooked up and recognized him
from the other day.
Hey man, good to see you again.
George nodded and returned andstood up at the bar A Miller he
ordered.
George watched while thebartender filled a glass.
He was a roly-poly young guysomewhere in his late 20s with a

(21:30):
stomach that suggested he likedto sample the beer he sold.
George took a long sip, halfemptying the tall stein before
putting it down on the dark woodbar.
Tell me something George belched.
Did you know the DeFeos?
The young man had resumed hisglass washing.
He nodded yeah, I knew them.

(21:50):
Why I'm living in their housenow and I know knew them why I'm
living in their house now and Iknow.
The bartender interrupted.
George lifted his eyebrows insurprise.
The first time you came in hereyou said you moved into 112
Ocean.
That's the DeFeo's.
George finished off his beer.
Did they ever come in here?

(22:11):
The bartender put a clean glassand wiped his hands on a towel.
Only Ronnie did Sometimes.
He brought in his sister Dawn,a cute kid.
He picked up George's emptyglass.
You know you look a lot likeRonnie the beard and all.
I think you're older than he is, though Did he ever talk about

(22:33):
their house?
The bartender put a new beer infront of George.
The house, yeah, you know.
Did he ever say anything thatwas funny going on in there?
Stuff like that.
George took a sip.
You think there's something badabout the joint, I mean now
after the murders?
No, no, george raised a hand.

(22:53):
I was just asking whether heever did anything before that
night.
The bartender looked around thebar as if to confirm that there
was no one else around.
Ronnie never said anything likethat to me personally.
He leaned closer to George, butI'll tell you something.
I was there once.
They threw a big party andRonnie's old man hired me to

(23:15):
take care of the bar.
George had half finished hissecond beer.
What did you think of the place?
The bartender spread his armson the bar.
Big, a real big joint.
I didn't see too much of it,though I was down in the
basement.
A lot of booze and beer flowedthrough.
That night it was theiranniversary.

(23:41):
He looked around the bar again.
Did you know that they got asecret room down in the basement
.
George pretended to be to notknow no, where.
The bartender said you take alook behind those closets and
you'll find something that willreally shake you.
Look behind those closets andyou'll find something that will
really shake you.
George leaned over the bar.
What was it?
A room, a little room.
I found it that night.
I was down in the basement andthere's this plywood closet

(24:04):
built up beside the stairs.
I'm using it to ice the beer insee.
And when I bumped a peg againstone of the ends of the closet,
it seemed the whole wall isloose, you know, like a secret
panel, something out of an oldmovie.
What about the room?
George prodded.
Bartender nodded yeah well, Ibumped the plywood.

(24:25):
It came open and I could seethis dark space behind it.
The light bulb wasn't working,so I lit a match and sure enough
, there's this weird little roomall painted red.
You're putting me on, georgeprotested.
The bartender put his righthand over his heart.
God's honest truth, man.
So help me, you'll see.

(24:47):
George finished his second beer.
I'll certainly have to look forthat.
He put a dollar on the bar.
That's for the beers.
He put down another, that's foryourself.
Hey, man, thanks.
The bartender looked up atGeorge.
You want to know something realflaky about that little room.
I used to have nightmares aboutit.
Nightmares Like what?

(25:07):
Oh, sometimes I dream thatpeople, I don't know who were
there, were killing dogs andpigs in there and using their
blood for some kind of ceremony.
Dogs and pigs yeah, thebartender waved his hand in
disgust.
I guess the place, the redpaint and all really got to me

(25:28):
when George got home.
He and Kathy both had stories totell each other.
She described a frighteningevent in their bedroom and he
related what the bartender saidat the witch's room, and he also
told her about the red room inthe basement.
The Lutz family finallyrealized that there was
something going on that wasbeyond their control.

(25:49):
Please call Father MancusoKathy.
Begged Ask him to come back.
Call Father Mancuso Kathy.
Begged ask him to come back.
Father Mancuso's superiors hadbeen concerned with his health
and had dropped by to look in onhim.
Father Mancuso told them thathe felt much better that morning
.
They also decided to spend sometime together to review the

(26:10):
priest's workload.
Most of the backlog was quicklycleared up and put on his
briefcase.
A secretary would do the typing.
Father Mancuso saw the clericsto the building's entrance, then
walked back to his apartment.
The phone was ringing.
He was still wearing the softwhite cotton surgical gloves he

(26:33):
had found in his drawer.
The priest had explained to thebishop that he put them on his
hands to protect them from cold, but the real motive was to hide
the ugly rawness of hisblisters.
The priest's telephone rangfive times before he picked it
up.
Hello, this is Father Mancuso.
The voice on the other end camethrough loud and clear.
Father, this is George.

(26:54):
The priest couldn't believe hisears.
It was as if George wasstanding right in the room with
him.
He was so surprised.
He blurted out George, georgeLutz, kathy's husband.
Oh hi, how are you?
George held the receiver awayfrom his ear and looked at Kathy
standing next to him in thekitchen.
What's with him?
He whispered to her.

(27:15):
He sounds like he doesn'tremember me.
Father Mancuso knew who Georgewas all right, but he still was
stunned to hear him on an openline, without any interference
at all.
I'm sorry, george, I didn'tmean to be rude.
I just wasn't ready for yourcall this way after all the
trouble I've had reaching you.

(27:37):
Yeah, answered George.
I know what you mean.
Father Mancuso waited forGeorge to continue, but there
was only silence.
George, you still there?
Yes, father, said George.
I'm here and Kathy's rightbeside me.
He looked at his wife.
We want you to come back andbless the house.
Father Mancuso thought of whathad befallen on him the first

(27:58):
time he had blessed the Lutz'shome.
He looked at his white glovedhands.
Father, can you come right away?
The priest hesitated.
He didn't want to go back there, but he couldn't tell George
that in so many words.
Well, george, he finallyanswered.
I don't know if I can comeright now.
I have the flu again.
You see, the doctor doesn'twant me running around in this

(28:19):
cold weather.
Well, george interrupted, whencan you come?
Father Mancuso began to look fora way out.
Why do you want me to bless thehouse again?
You don't do that just like adrop of a hat, george.
You don't do that just like adrop of a hat, george.
And George was desperate.
Look, we owe you a dinner.
You come and Kathy will cookthe best steak you've ever had.

(28:41):
Then you can stay overnight.
Oh, I couldn't do that, george.
Well, we'll make you drunkenough to stay.
Father Mancuso couldn't believewhat he just heard.
You just don't say stuff likethat to a priest.
Listen here, young man.
You, father, we're in a lot oftrouble.
We need your help.
The priest's anger evaporated.

(29:03):
What's the matter?

I didn't hear you.

.
There was no longer anything tobe heard on the line but static

It started again.
It's killing the phone.
By the time Father Mancuso putdown the receiver, his hands
were burning again.
God forgive me, he said aloud, but George is going to have to

(29:45):
get help from someone else.
There's no way I'm going backin that house.
