Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hello everyone, my name is Carolyn.
Welcome to the Saving for yourFirst Home podcast.
I am the CEO of the FinancialMoment.
We offer money coaching forthose who are ready and willing
to make financial changes intheir lives.
For the most of us, there comesa point in time where we think
to ourselves it would be reallynice to own property, but it

(00:22):
sometimes can feel like a pipedream and not very easily
obtainable.
So I created this podcast togive you all the information and
tools you need to take thesteps forward toward home
ownership.
Take it from me my husband andI started our lives together,
working part-time jobs with ayoung child.
Fast forward, through manyhiccups and failures, we stepped

(00:43):
our feet into our very firsthome.
For us it was a pile of dirt, but eventually our family home
was built on that dirt.
Now we are in the midst ofgrowing our investment property
portfolio.
I created the savings for yourfirst home podcast to give you
easy, actionable tools for youto do the same.
If you have that same gutfeeling that I did and want to

(01:06):
create a life for yourself andyour growing family, but don't
know where to start, you are inthe right place.
Let's do this.
Welcome back everyone.
I'm Carolyn, your Money Coat, sothis episode, when it releases,
is going to be on the AmericanThanksgiving Day.
So to all my American listeners, I'm wishing you a very happy

(01:26):
Thanksgiving.
I hope the time is spent filledwith lots of food, family,
friends and fun.
Us Canadians have had our fillof turkey last month, so we wish
you guys all the best.
And, of course, as an avidshopper myself, we all know what
comes after Thanksgiving, andthat is Black Friday weekend

(01:49):
into Cyber Monday, and typicallythis is the biggest sale of the
year.
I think it's trumped up BoxingDay now as being the biggest
discounts and sales online andin person.
So, as your Money Coach, itwould be remiss of me not to go
over some key shopping tips, things that you need to look out

(02:11):
for and ways you can protectyour budget.
But before I get into all ofthat, I want to remind you that
today is the last day to gainaccess to my digital course that
is going to launch in 2024.
Now, specifically, this courseis going to be all about how you

(02:34):
can pay off your debt.
So I know from experience that, starting this weekend leading
up to January 1st is kind of atime where we overspend and we
get ourselves a little bitdeeper into debt than we want to
.
So I want to make sure thatyou're ready for 2024 and you

(02:56):
are enrolled and get access toall the things that I have to
offer.
That is going to walk youthrough exactly how to get rid
of that debt.
2024 has to be your year, and sowhy not start it on the right
foot by getting rid of all thosecobwebs in the past and moving
forward on a fresh start?

(03:17):
So today is the last day toobtain VIP access, and what you
get with VIP is the Q&A sessionsthat we will run through week
by week as the course releases, and you'll get lifetime access
to the course.
So if ever you need a refresher, it's always there for you, and

(03:39):
the best part is that everybonus that I add to this offer
as we head into the launch inthe new year, you will have
access to that as well.
So you never know what that canbe.
So you want to make sure thatyou sign up before the end of
the day, and for those that arelistening to this episode after

(04:00):
November 23rd, don't worry, Igot you.
Black Friday is going to have aspecial deal as well.
So head to at the financialmoment on Instagram to get all
those details.
And I promise three things that, once you've completed this
course, you are going to haveall the hacks that you need to
create a tailored debtelimination plan just for you.

(04:24):
You're also going to understandhow to create a realistic
custom budget that's going toprevent you from ending up in
the same place.
And then, finally, we are goingto build back your confidence
in your ability to manage yourmoney.
So if you've been to one of mywebinars or you've been
listening to this podcast oryou've been an IG follower, you

(04:47):
understand how passionate I amabout this.
I want all of you to live yourbest life, to have a financial
future that is free from stress, anxiety and debt.
So make this $98 purchased yourbest one for this weekend and
together we can change yourfinancial future.

(05:08):
Okay, so now let's head intosome of the Black Friday tips
that I have for you.
So the first thing that I liketo do when I am planning for the
holidays or gift-giving seasonis write a list.
Now, I'm not just talking abouta list for the people that
you're going to buy gifts for, Iam talking about the big list.

(05:32):
So what are all the partiesthat I'm going to my hosting
Christmas?
What are all the events?
So we start there with theevents and then we get into what
it is that I need to bring tothese events.
Do I need to bring a gift?
Do I need to make something?
What is my contribution?
A lot of the time, we're good atmaking lists for gifts and

(05:53):
creating a budget against that, but we forget about all the
events that lead up to theholidays, and so it's important
to factor in that amount as wellinto your budget as you go and
head into this holiday season.
So, number one create a list ofall the events that you're
going to, what it is that youneed to contribute, and put a

(06:17):
number beside it.
Next up is to create a list ofpeople that you plan on
producing a gift for Now.
Be as realistic as possiblewith this.
Don't forget the office party, your neighbor down the street.
That's super helpful, becausethose gifts that are kind of
one-offs they are the ones thattend to throw you off budget

(06:37):
because you forget about them, and then you have to run to the
store and grab something lastminute, and then you end up
spending more than you planned.
So make sure that when you'recreating your list, it is a
robust one and it's all thepeople that you think you are
going to spend money on thisyear.
Okay, tip number two do yourresearch.

(06:57):
Now for the month of November, the stores are kind of getting
earlier and earlier when itcomes to the sales.
I think they have friends andfamily at the beginning of the
month and then you start to seeBlack Friday sales come out long
before Black Friday even begins.
So if you understand what it isthat you're going to purchase
for each individual, then go outand do your research and see

(07:20):
what the prices are for theseitems.
For the most part, if you areseeing 40% or above discount off
of the item, that is likelygoing to be the highest discount
that you're going to see.
Things change up on CyberMonday.
So if you see those bigdiscounts hit, you really want
to jump on that right away.
And then tip number three isreally to stay informed.

(07:43):
Sign up for their emails, theirtext messages, because that is
going to give you the firstopportunity to buy the item that
you want at the largestdiscount.
I know we all don't want abunch of spam in our inboxes.
So maybe even sign up for a newGmail account that is
specifically for these retailers.

(08:04):
This way you're not huntingthrough your own personal email
trying to find the deal that youonce saw a couple weeks ago.
Now, if you're an in-personshopper, then tip number four is
going to be for you Head outearly.
Now, I know this means ifyou're an American, then you
just ate your big Thanksgivingdinner and who wants to wake up

(08:24):
early.
But if you have a mission, thenI suggest you get up as early
as possible and hit the storesas soon as they open, because
you want to kind of avoid therush, you want to be able to
make sure that that item thatyou want is still in stock and
you're going to have the bestchance of getting parking.
Trust me, I know, okay.

(08:44):
So tip number five is to ensurethat you are buying quality over
quantity.
I know a lot of people.
If you go down to theirbasements, they've got a lot of
stuff in boxes that they've justpicked up because it was on
sale and they have no purposefor it at the moment.

(09:04):
But they figure.
Hey, you know what I'm going toeventually need this, this and
this Try and stay away from that.
As much as things arediscounted, because the stores
are really trying to get rid oftheir inventory.
You don't want to stockinventory in your home, so what
you want to do is ensure thatyou're buying quality items and

(09:25):
not just because they are onsale.
So if there is particularretailer that you like shopping
from on a regular basis, thennow is the time to pick up some
of those key quality items.
Now for the online shopper thisis where you have an abundance
of information.
So use the websites, the apps,to do comparison.

(09:47):
There are specific websitesthat will do the comparison for
you.
I think even Google has GoogleShopping, and you can actually
see and compare what the pricesare for similar items.
So let the internet work foryou.
Look around before you hit thatpurchase button.
And my next tip is really aboutloyalty programs.

(10:10):
So a lot of the time duringBlack Friday, if you are part of
a loyalty program, they'regoing to give you a special
promotion or deal, somethinglike Amazon Prime.
You have access to their flashsales.
So finally, if you have a listand you've put a budget against
each individual, now you need toput a store associated with

(10:33):
that individual as well, so thatyou sign up for their emails
and newsletters and, like I said, they may have some additional
bonuses or discounts off if youare receiving their email alerts
.
Okay, so you're now, you'reready, you're prepared to go
shopping.
This is what I want you towatch out for.

(10:56):
So, number one watch out for thebuy now, pay later option.
I actually did an episode, number 12, called buy now, pay
later.
Should we even consider it?
So take a listen to thatepisode, if this is something
that you're considering, becauseit tends to mean that you don't

(11:17):
have the money right now to buythat purchase and I understand
it's on sale, it's discountedbut, number one, if you throw it
on a credit card, you're justgoing to be charged interest for
it.
So that's why sometimes thisbuy now, pay later is appealing,
because you know they're givingyou X amount of time to pay
without interest, but you'rejust setting yourself up because

(11:41):
you haven't allocated thatmonthly amount into your budget
at this point.
So take a listen to thatepisode, because we go through
all the pros and cons of that.
Now, the second thing to lookout for is those fast deals, the
things that are like a one dayonly or only for a certain time
period of the day.
Again, always refer back toyour list.

(12:04):
If the item actually was onyour list let's say, for example
, you're looking for atelevision and this is going to
be the deal of the day thenyou're in luck, right, because
you're going to get an extradiscount off of that.
But if you are not in themarket to buy a television, then
don't get tripped up with thesediscounts, right, because you
don't really have the money tospend on that right now.

(12:25):
So I know it's a good deal, buttry and pass over those deals
if they are not on your list.
The third thing that I want youto look out for are scams.
Now, this can happen more soonline than in person, because
people have an easy way ofduplicating websites that look

(12:46):
and feel the same as what you'reused to, but actually it's not.
So be sure you're checking theURL of the website, maybe even
pre-bookmark some of the sitesthat you know you're going to be
purchasing from, to ensure thatwhen you go to search for it,
it's going to be the correct one, because if you're just

(13:06):
googling the site, you may endup in something that looks and
feels like the normal store, butit isn't, and so you don't want
to be taken advantage of inthat way.
And then the final thing towatch out for is the store
policies.
If you are purchasing somethingand they say this is final sale

(13:28):
, yes, you may get a greatdiscount on it, but just think
it through, because high valuepurchases you may want to ensure
there is a return policy inplace.
So, now that you're safe, Iwant to show you some ways that
you can really protect yourbudget going into the new year.
You know a lot of people feelreally obligated at this time of

(13:51):
year to give, and they can feelembarrassed if they are not
able to give at a certain level, and so, therefore, they go into
debt to ensure that they don'tcome off looking like they are
cheap.
So, number one, I want to tellyou that financial wellness is
worth so much more than whatevergift item that you plan to buy

(14:13):
for that individual.
So what I mean by that is firstconsider your financial
situation when you're creating abudget and allocating the
amount of money that you'regoing to be spending on events
as well as on gifts.
Make sure that is somethingthat you actually have set aside

(14:33):
, and maybe you're just not ontop of it this year and you
don't have any savings for theholidays I got you.
Here are a couple of ways thatyou can save a little bit more
money.
Number one is gift cards.
I am sure that each one of youhas a gift card from someone
that you have not used at thispoint.
So maybe now is a good time topull out that gift card and see

(14:59):
if there's something that youcan purchase from that store
that you can give to anotherperson.
You know, re-gifting isn't sobad if it's a gift card.
We just don't want to bere-gifting things that we don't
want.
Secondly, if you have a creditcard that offers cashback, now

(15:19):
is a good time to keep yourpurchases isolated to that one
particular card, so that way, when the month comes and you
have to pay the bill, you canuse some of the money that you
got on cashback to help pay offthe balance.
The third way to kind of reducethe amount of money that you're
spending is perhaps to do agift game.

(15:39):
You know, at a lot of partiesand events many times there are
games that you can do that onlyrequire to buy one gift for one
individual and not 10 gifts forpeople.
So you know, kind ofinvestigate and see what kind of
games are out there.
They're always fun, it makes itenjoyable if it's a theme and

(16:01):
it really will help you to savesome money overall.
And then finally, think aboutexperiences.
People more than anything, wantto spend time with you.
So instead of buying somebody abook, let's say instead, why
don't you plan a date where yougo for coffee and then peruse a

(16:22):
bookstore where you can treatthem to a book of their choice?
That means so much more, because the time that you spend
with them is so much more morevaluable than just wrapping up a
book that you've purchased.
And get creative with this.
If you're crafty, you can makesomething.
You can print a picture of youand your BFF back in the day and
frame it.

(16:42):
You can write up a story aboutyour memorable moments.
If you're a writer, if you'redigitally inclined, create a
video tribute.
If you're awesome in thekitchen, set a date to bake
something together.
And if you got the green thumb, then you can even grow a plant,
maybe one of their favoritespices or a flower that they

(17:05):
love, and some people would justlove a donation to their
favorite charity.
So I could go on and on withall the different suggestions
about how to come up with giftideas that doesn't really cost
anything, that are going to meanmore to that individual than
anything that you could purchase.
So I hope this is someinspiration to you, but if you

(17:28):
aren't feeling uninspired, thenyou know, ask Google, ask
JackGPT, to give you somesuggestions on how you can get
creative with outspending a lotof money.
So, finally, I really just wantto encourage you guys to
consider your financial healthand wellness as a part of the

(17:49):
plan for this holiday spendingseason.
I am going to do my best toprovide you all the information
and tips that you need as wehead into the new year, but plan
to make 2020 for your year theyear that you are released from
the burden of debt, the yearthat you have your finances
