Speaker 1 (00:00):
So we need to always
practice appreciative inquiry,
asking ourselves am I seeingeverything that needs to be seen
?
Do I have all of the intel thatI need?
Now going back to my funeralservice story, the
organizational psychologist, drJoe Pace, that came into our
(00:22):
Funeral Home Grief RecoveryProgram from the Pacific
Institute actually taught usabout scotomas and he put us
through a scotoma exercise and Ifailed, man.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
Really.
Speaker 1 (00:32):
And you went through
that.
Oh yes, sir, but that was mylife-changing moment.
That was the moment thatstraightened my spine.
Speaker 2 (00:42):
When you talk about.
You mentioned blind spots.
In the past.
You talked about blind spotsand and can you talk to us more
about the importance ofeliminating those blind spots
when it comes to resistance andmindset?
Speaker 1 (00:58):
Yes, certainly that's
a, that's a three-hour workshop
.
Speaker 2 (01:02):
A three-hour workshop
.
Oh my goodness.
Speaker 1 (01:04):
Buckle in, buckle up.
So there's something that isactually a phenomenon that
happens in our thinking process.
It's called scotoma, a scotomamoment, and that is a cognitive
blocking out of something that'sright in front of you,
something that's hidden in plainsight.
For the audience's benefit,I'll just use glasses as an
(01:26):
example for those of you thatwear glasses.
You know where are my glasses?
Where are my glasses?
You walk by a reflection of amirror.
They've been on your head thewhole time.
Or you know where are my carkeys?
Where are my car keys, especially nowadays with the fob
?
Well, they've been in thecenter console the whole time.
Or they're in your pocket, orthey're in your pocket or
(01:50):
they're in your hand.
But it's something that is rightin front of you.
You just can't see it.
So that's natural.
So we need to always practiceappreciative inquiry, asking
ourselves am I seeing everythingthat needs to be seen?
Do I have all of the?
Do I have all of the, all ofthe intel that I need?
Now, going back to my funeralservice story, the
organizational psychologist, drJoe Pace, that came into our
Funeral Home Grief RecoveryProgram from the Pacific
(02:12):
Institute, actually taught usabout scotomas and he put us
through a scotoma exercise and Ifailed man.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
I-.
Speaker 1 (02:19):
Really.
And you went through the oh yes, sir.
But that was my life-changingmoment.
That was the moment that itstraightened my spine because I
was the boss applesauce.
My name was on the building.
You know I had the cars and allthe watches and all the
artifacts to prove it.
You know I signed both thefront and the back of the checks
.
That means you're the bossapplesauce, all that.
(02:40):
But I got the wrong answer inthe exercise.
But there were people around methat got the right answer.
And it's not a test in IQ, it'sa test in perception.
Are you seeing all that's outthere to be seen?
Tested perception?
Are you seeing all that's outthere to be seen?
Now you step through thatexercise with me in our events.
What's interesting is that itworks every time, because we all
(03:02):
don't see the same thing, because of these cognitive
blockages, if you will, in ourline of sight, line of sight
from seeing to perceiving andthen believing.
I'm going back to the beliefthing in a moment.
So it's vitally important torealize that we all have
scotomas.
(03:22):
Problem is we just don't knowwhere they are.
But where we typically havescotomas and where they can be
uncovered, where we can bescotoma busters for one another
is to look in the crevices oraround the corner, where you're
working really, really hard andyou're just not creating
breakthrough.
(03:43):
It's like the same thing overand over again.
What, what is it?
Uh, einstein, uh, um, um, helpme.
Doing the same thing over andover again?
Is is the definition?
expecting a different result isinsanity, insanity, insanity,
right.
So where are you doing the samething over and over again and
you're just getting the sameresult.
And you think that you shouldcreate breakthrough, or where
(04:05):
you really believe you could bea, could be superlative, where
you want to go from good togreater, great to greater, but
you just, you're just missingthat oregano, that secret sauce,
that little added pixie dust,if you will.
So that's where you usuallyhave scotoma moments and
oftentimes you can't see them onyour own.
(04:26):
So you want to use an advisoror a coach, or ask your
significant other, or just askyourself get reflective, what
might I be missing?
Because therein lies limitingbeliefs, because you're going
back in your emotional historytool box and you're using the
(04:46):
same logic that you've used inthe past, whether it served you
there properly or not, andflicking up, as I mentioned
before, into the current realityand, using that same logic,
making decision, but expectingsomething different.
So the intention is to go fromthose limiting beliefs when do I
(05:06):
have my limiting beliefs?
And then go through thisprocess to basically hack your
mind and affirm a liberatingbelief.
And that is no.
I can't find this answerbecause I've done it once before
.
I just need to stretch myself abit more and look at places
that I haven't looked.
I need to look to a coach.
I need to be more innovative.
(05:28):
I need to be more open toopportunity, possibility
thinking, more open toopportunity.
You know possibility thinking.
Now, again, this soundsconceptual, but we make it very.
We translate mindset into askill set.
There's exercises that you cango through and you began some of
those with me in the workshop, mark to translate limiting
(05:49):
beliefs, because you want to goto those places that you know
that are causing you to losesleep at night.
You know what's keeping me upat night Business problems,
family problems because that'swhere most of your limiting
beliefs lie, where your scotomaslie, where your blind spots lie
, and in turn, you want to lookto the replacement picture, like
(06:10):
I did with my funeral servicecareer.
I want more than what I'mexperiencing.
Is it going to be easy to getthere?
No, but you've got to stretchyourself with a clear
understanding of where you wantto go and that's where your
liberating beliefs will not onlybe uncovered but will release
you, will unleash you, and overan incremental amount of time,
(06:32):
like it did with me with thePacific Institute, starting as a
commission-based only sales guyto now being the CEO of the
organization.
I just kept running towards theroar because I wanted it, I
like it, I love it, I want more.
I want to bathe in this.
That's how we go from blindspots and limiting beliefs to
liberating ones and achievingour goals that we thought were
(06:54):
never achievable in the past.
