In this week's episode of Empower LEP, I had such a fantastic conversation with Dr. Jaclyn Fleck, and let me tell you—if you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by insurance billing, superbills, and all the fine print, you are not alone! As a fellow psychologist, I found her insights so valuable, and I walked away with a much clearer understanding of how to navigate this tricky system.

Dr. Fleck is a clinical psychologist and co-owner of a neuropsych/psych testing practice outside of Chicago. She and her husband (also a clinical psychologist) started their testing-only practice almost eight years ago. Dr. Fleck meets with clients ages 4 and older and for a variety of referral requests including ADHD, autism, Specific Learning Disorders, and various psychiatric concerns (e.g., mood disorders, anxiety, traumatic stress, personality disorders). Dr. Fleck also works part-time as a consultant to other mental health professionals; specifically, she meets with professionals who need support around billing for testing, understanding CPT codes, and trying to avoid insurance audits.

Here are some of my biggest takeaways from our chat:

💡 Insurance companies love to keep us guessing. Dr. Fleck’s experience with a Blue Cross audit was a real wake-up call. The hidden rules, confusing policies, and endless paperwork? It’s enough to make your head spin!

💡 Even if you're self-pay, billing matters. I learned that using the right CPT codes and staying within time limits can make a huge difference in getting reimbursed. It’s not just about submitting a superbill—it’s about submitting it correctly.

💡 Expert guidance is a game-changer. Dr. Fleck took a look at my superbill setup and gave me real, actionable tips to improve it. No more second-guessing—I finally feel like I know what I’m doing!

💡 Set clear expectations with clients. Being upfront about what insurance may or may not cover can prevent a lot of frustration down the road. Transparency is key, and it helps both us and our clients navigate the process with fewer surprises.

I left this conversation feeling so much more confident in my billing practices, and I know you will too. If you need support in this area, Dr. Fleck is the person to talk to! She knows her stuff, and her guidance is absolutely worth it.
