Hi friend, welcome to a specialguest episode of the empowered
artists.
We have Chelsea Glanz who isgoing to share her three secrets
(05:50):
from growing her art businessfrom zero to 10 K.
Track 1 (05:54):
Hi Chelsea.
Thank you for being here with metoday.
chelsea-glanz_1_09-05-2023_ (05:57):
Hi,
Jenna.
Thank you for having me.
Track 1 (06:00):
You are so welcome.
I know we were just talkingabout how excited I have been to
have you on the show ever sinceI created it.
I knew you were the one
chelsea-glanz_1_09-05-2023_ (06:10):
Aw,
well, I'm honored.
Track 1 (06:12):
I am so honored too.
I love working with you.
So, let me tell the listeners alittle bit about you.
So, Chelsea Glanz is from FortCollins, Colorado.
She is a painter.
She paints primarily whimsicaloil paintings on live edged
wood.
It's really cool.
If you're watching on YouTube, you could see a gorgeous pet
(06:36):
portrait behind her She alsocreates small paintings in
watercolor and acrylic.
Chelsea and I, we know eachother because she was in the Art
Preneur Academy, a plus studentShe grew her business from zero
to over 10 K the next year.
So big kudos to you Chelsea
chelsea-glanz_1_09-05-20 (06:59):
umHmm.
thank you,
Track 1 (07:01):
You're so welcome.
So you've had pivotal growth inyour art business since we've
met, and you're here to shareyour secrets today.
I know you prepared your threesecrets to success for our
listeners.
So with that in mind, can youtell an artist who wants to have
the same growth that you did, zero to 10 K what would you
(07:25):
recommend another artist do inyour situation?
chelsea-glanz_1_09-05-202 (07:29):
Yeah,
definitely.
So I kind of broke these threesteps down to the first one that
I would say that really helpedme is to reflect.
So, reflect on Specificallywhere you're spreading yourself
too thin.
And so what I mean by that is I,I used to have this thought and
maybe if you're listening forour listeners, like you might be
(07:50):
experiencing this too.
And that is, I just wanna paintwhat I want.
I.
As an artist, like I just wannacreate what I want, but nobody
buys my work.
And so I was having the thoughtand as a result I was painting
anything, all different styles.
I was taking any commission thatcame my way.
Even if it wasn't reallysomething even if the commission
(08:11):
wasn't really what I wanted topaint, I was just like trying
everything.
And I was so, but the, the thingis I was so afraid to miss out
on income or opportunity.
That I actually ended up doingartwork I didn't enjoy when my
original intent was just to dowhat I love.
And so, the result was I had allthis art sitting around that
like never got purchased andnever got shared.
(08:34):
So step one is to reflectreflect on if that's you, are
you wanting to just paint whatyou wanna paint, but you feel
like it's not selling?
You feel like there's notmovement?
And so step two is to notice.
And this is what I reallystarted to realize when I was
taking Jenna's part of Jenna'sArtpreneur Academy, is to notice
(08:56):
what notice what your idealclients, or even just fans or
people that are seeing yourwork, notice what people like
and what they're saying aboutyour work and what they're
resonating with.
Specifically like what style ofpainting, what subject matter
notice, what people like andwhat they're drawn to.
And this is something that Jennateaches us how to do in the
(09:17):
Artpreneur Academy with reallylike simple, easy to understand
action steps.
And she teaches like a, aprocess for collecting that
feedback that's reallyactionable and that's really
tangible.
So,
Track 1 (09:31):
Absolutely.
It doesn't even have to be workthat you've sold that you said
it yourself.
It's what are people noticingand you're getting your artwork
out there on social media oryou're selling it at an art
market or a fair, what arepeople resonating with?
And you're, like you said, you're taking notice that is
(09:51):
step two.
chelsea-glanz_1_09-05-202 (09:53):
Yeah.
Yeah.
And becoming a pro, like atasking for feedback and I think
that's something that maybe, atleast for me, it didn't come
naturally at first, or it felt alittle strange, but it's it's so
valuable to, to become to cravethat feedback so that you know
what people are liking.
So
Track 1 (10:12):
I mean a thousand
percent.
I love it.
I love it that you've reallybecome an expert in doing that
because customer feedback istruly the driving force in your
business.
Once you.
Understand that there's nosingle piece of better valuable
information when your customersare telling you what they like
(10:33):
because you have the opportunityto double down on it.
Creating a natural and frequentfeedback channel between you and
your ideal client is so crucialfor your business.
I'm so glad Chelsea is talkingabout this today.
In Artpreneur academy, we have adeep dive and Ideal Client
Mastery Workshop so that you canunderstand who your ideal client
(10:55):
is in the first place, where tofind them online, and how to
sell to them.
If you want to master your art, marketing, your branding, your
artist's statement, and so muchmore just like Chelsea and
hundreds of my other Artpreneuracademy students.
Click the link in the show notesor visit Jenna Webb
art.com/artpreneur academy.
(11:16):
And jump your business to thenext level today.
It's all broken down an easy, actionable steps for you, and
you will leave with a hugeconfidence injection, just like
Chelsea I can't wait for you tocheck it out.
Now, back to the show.
And I think you're
about to tell us more about
that, but it creates a deep wellof wealth for you when you can
(11:40):
zero in on exactly what they'retelling you.
So can you tell us a little bitmore about how that worked for
you or how.
Tell, tell us secret numberthree,
chelsea-glanz_1_09-05-2023 (11:49):
Yes.
Yes, definitely.
So, secret number one, reflectif you're, where you're
spreading yourself too thin.
Secret number two, notice whatyour people are resonating with
and like.
And number three is to hone in.
And this is where I feel likethe action really starts to
happen, and at least the kind oflike Aha did for me.
And so hone in on what'sworking.
(12:11):
And I think Jenna, at one pointyou said like, pump that baby
up, like double down, you know?
Hone in on what's working andwhat people are drawn to.
And so what that means, I wannaclarify, like, what I really
realized, what that means is toallocate time to creating what's
working.
So it doesn't mean like thatyou're you know, saying no to
(12:33):
everything else you wanna do,but you're allocating consistent
time to creating what's workingin your business.
Track 1 (12:40):
Absolutely.
You have to, when you doubledown, it's your, your spiritual
energy and your time, energy.
It's really that investment whenyou, you're making a commitment
to, Hey, that's working.
I'm gonna go for it and I'mgonna run at it hard.
chelsea-glanz_1_09-05-202 (12:58):
yeah,
yeah.
Totally.
And it does, it also means, whatI really realize is it means
saying no to projects orcommissions that don't align
with that.
I.
Again, it didn't mean for me,you know, it doesn't mean you
can't still explore anotherstyle on the side.
It simply means that to growyour business and revenue it's
so helpful.
(13:19):
Like you really need to committo showing up consistently and
saying no to what doesn't align.
And at first I was so afraid todo this.
I was so afraid because I didn'twanna miss out on opportunities,
especially when I like neededmoney and I wanted to grow my
art business.
I was so afraid to say no.
And I used to do everything fromchildren's books to murals to
(13:43):
book covers, to just everything.
But it wasn't growing mybusiness like I was taking these
things, but it wasn't growing.
Track 1 (13:50):
Yeah.
chelsea-glanz_1_09-05-2 (13:51):
Jenna's
course clarified that I needed
to let some things go and that'sactually helpful and that
Track 1 (13:56):
Yeah.
And.
Saying yes to things and beinghungry because there is a
balance when you're a new artistthat's there, you've gotta be
hungry and say yes to things andtest the waters, and that's what
you were doing.
But you had become so busy indoing that, it was time to shed
(14:17):
some skin of what wasn't workingand getting aligned.
Is exactly what you're saying.
It's not creating lessopportunity.
It's creating more fulfillingopportunity where your soul can
really sing and be happy, andjust every day you can have a
(14:39):
full cup.
Then spread yourself thin withthings that you're not truly
passionate about, and whenyou're focused in that way, the
money and the joy will flow aswell.
chelsea-glanz_1_09-05-202 (14:51):
Yeah,
totally.
Totally.
Yeah.
It's really is that power of, ofsaying no and not being afraid
to let go because that it, I,it's almost ironic, but I feel
like the power of saying noopens up more like you're
saying, space and freedom for meto actually do art that I wanna
do and enjoy and that my clientsare happy with.
(15:13):
And so that's where I actuallyended up honing in on creating
pet portraits.
I grew up on a farm, so I loveanimals and that just like comes
naturally and I wanna helpconnect others to nature and,
and kind of the healingmedicines of nature.
So I really honed in on animalsand pet portraits and just like
capturing their spirit.
(15:35):
I.
And as a result, I'm getting todo what I'm good at and enjoy.
I charge more for it.
People know me as that, and thenmy clients have a better
experience as a result, insteadof just feeling scattered and
not really having a portfoliothat represents, you know, what
I specialize in.
Track 1 (15:55):
right?
Yeah.
Honing in is about finding thatmarriage between what you're
truly beautifully wonderful atand your what your clients are
noticing, liking, and buying.
Hey.
chelsea-glanz_1_09-05-2 (16:06):
Mm-hmm.
Yeah.
Yep.
Totally.
Jenna Webb (16:10):
The main reason she
was so primed to succeed is
because of the mastery shegained in Artpreneur academy.
She had a full understanding ofwho her ideal client was, what
her purpose is as an artist andexactly the Artpreneur mindset
it takes to succeed.
If you want to master your idealclient, your artist's statement
(16:34):
and your confidence, just likeher and hundreds of my
Artpreneur academy students,Then click the link in the show
notes to learn all aboutArtpreneur academy and how it
can bring your art business tothe next level.
Or visit Jenna Webbart.com/Artpreneur academy.
Now back to the show.
Track 1 (17:01):
So tell me about the
results you got by making this
big pivot and honing in in yourbusiness.
chelsea-glanz_1_09-05-202 (17:09):
Yeah.
So like I said, it, it feltreally scary at first, so I
wanna acknowledge that to anyonethat's listening.
Like
Track 1 (17:16):
yeah.
chelsea-glanz_1_09-05-2023 (17:17):
feel
scary to hone in.
And so that's okay.
That's okay.
And trust the process of that, you know?
So it, it, I think there's atendency to feel like, oh,
honing in might box me in.
But you're actually, also, theresults from this is that
instead of it's like a Venndiagram, so I, you find the
(17:38):
overlap between what yourclients love and what you love
to create.
So rather than boxing yourselfin, you're actually finding that
sweet spot and you can stillplay with things on the side.
And so as a result, it opened upmore like free time for me to do
other styles that I wanted toplay with.
Like in the morning, sometimes Istart with abstract or free flow
(18:00):
painting as a like kind ofmeditative thing.
And then I have my time blocks.
For painting what my clientslove.
So it opened up kind of thisspace and this security of like,
I know what is going to sell.
And by focusing and creatingthat better quality work, I was
able to like just allocate mytime more efficiently and charge
(18:20):
more.
So that was sort of like theintangible.
And then I'll talk about the,the tangible numbers too.
Track 1 (18:28):
Yeah, I like what you
mentioned about how you knew
what was working so you feltsecure.
You felt secure by.
Spending that time on what wasworking, but then because you
felt secure, you also had thefreedom to explore in your free
time.
So this is, oh my gosh, it's sobeautiful like that, that you
(18:51):
just, you said it sobeautifully.
Rewind, everybody.
Rewind how she found that, and Ithink the Venn diagram imagery.
Is also really what artists needto hear because I think you hit
the nail on the head.
Most people think that nichingdown or honing in is boxing you
in, but no I, I'll raise myhand.
(19:12):
I am a prolific painter andartist who works in several
mediums, so, you know, I did allthat before I started zeroing in
like we're talking about.
But it gives you that space andfreedom too.
chelsea-glanz_1_09-05-2023 (19:27):
Hmm.
Track 1 (19:28):
Continue to just like
you said,
chelsea-glanz_1_09-05-202 (19:30):
Yeah,
totally.
Totally.
And it's, it's that I, I thinkthe other word I've, we've used
in conversation, or that I'veheard artists use is being
afraid.
I've heard artists say, I'mafraid I'm gonna have to sell
out.
To meet the desires of myclients.
And it, it's like, it really islike, yeah, you don't, it's,
it's so, and you can see it likefinding that overlap and then
(19:53):
pumping up what's working.
You can still go do your funstuff on the side, but you're
showing up consistently towhat's working.
Track 1 (20:00):
You're only selling out
if that's what you think you're
doing.
You're only boxing yourself inif you believe that.
But if you are finding a sweetspot that's so beautiful and
fulfilling, then you're creatingthat beau that beauty and
freedom in your own life.
So, it's really a perspective.
(20:21):
I'm so glad that you came ontoday to talk about this.
So, yeah.
Let's get tangible results ofwhat honing in has done for you.
chelsea-glanz_1_09-05-202 (20:30):
Yeah,
so it's really, it.
It's, it's so cool again,'causeI used to think, I can't say no,
but honing in has allowed me, Istill have to remind myself.
Well, that's so cool how thisworked.
Honing in has allowed me to havemore consistent revenue and
activity in my art business thanI.
Ever did prior.
So like for example, in before2021, I think it was 2021, I had
(20:54):
one commission.
So I used to get like one or twocommissions a year and maybe
like a couple thousand a yearsometimes, or like zero.
I my art business was like, youknow, just kind of in limbo.
And then in 2022, yeah, 2022 Idid seven pet portraits and then
(21:14):
sold many originals.
And in this year, in 2023, I'vealready booked and done seven
commissions and I'm stillbooking for the winter and I've
sold other originals.
So it's really created thisconsistency,
Track 1 (21:29):
Yes,
chelsea-glanz_1 (21:29):
predictability,
which is really exciting.
Track 1 (21:32):
When she says
commissions, guys in Artpreneur
Academy, we show you how tocharge what you're worth and
charge big bucks for thosecommissions.
So when she's telling you she'sbooked all these commissions, I.
She's bringing in some dough,okay.
And we also teach you how to docommissions to where you're
(21:52):
being creatively fulfilled andyou have freedom to express
yourself, even if it's abstractin a way that your client signs
off on giving you that creativefreedom.
And They are satisfied at theend too.
So I just wanna say even I thinksome artists think that
commission work boxes you inbecause you're doing it to
(22:14):
someone else's specs.
No, no, no, no, no.
It's even more beautiful becausethey're hiring you to do what
you are.
Amazing at and only you can do.
So I just love hearing thatyou're doing this and I love you
guys.
Gotta watch this on YouTube'cause Chelsea's got an amazing
dog portrait behind you.
I know where I'm going when I'mready for a portrait of Gus my
(22:37):
Boston Terrier.
I think it's gonna have to comefrom Chelsea glands So, I cannot
wait for our listeners to beable to look you up online.
So tell, tell us where can wefind you online?
chelsea-glanz_1_09-05-202 (22:49):
Yeah,
so you can find me online and
you can find also examples ofmore of the pet portraits and
the wood paintings.
Jenna was mentioning atInstagram.
It's at Chelsea Glands Arts, andmy website is also chelsea
glands art.com and Facebook.
Chelsea glands.
And I also kind of a separatebrand is I teach free flow
(23:12):
painting classes that really areintended to help people tap into
their own creative potential andunleash your expression.
And if you're interested tolearn more about that, you can
find me on Instagram at HaveYour Joy Chasm,
Track 1 (23:25):
Have your joy.
Yes.
chelsea-glanz_1_09-05-2 (23:27):
Mm-hmm.
Track 1 (23:28):
Love that memorable
name.
Okay, I'm just making sureeveryone heard.
It's at Chelsea Glands Art.
That's where you can find her.
We will link all of these linksin our show notes.
Do you have any final words forthe Empowered Artists listeners?
chelsea-glanz_1_09-05-2023_11 (23:44):
I
think, yeah.
You know, just to summarize, like really the big takeaway
from Art Preneur Academy was ithelped me realize the power of
collecting feedback so that Ican, like that feedback is the
most valuable thing, so I cancontinue to revise my offers
based on the feedback.
That I'm getting.
(24:04):
And again, find that overlap.
And that feels really importantbecause the core of my message
too, and, you know, the creativeempowerment work, kind of the
other brand I mentioned ishelping artists of all types
realize that they're powerfulcreators.
And so we don't have to be stuckin the like, story of artists
don't make money.
(24:25):
At least that was the story.
That was my old story.
And so Realizing the power ofhoning in kind of was a tangible
way for me to realize, like, Ican rewrite my story from
artists, don't make money to, Iget to create an abundant career
for myself.
And it might take a windingjourney, it might take these
steps, but like I get to createit and it's possible.
(24:47):
And that happens by, at leastfor me, the most powerful thing
from our preneur academy was byhoning in on what's working and
not being afraid to let go ofwhat's not so.
Track 1 (24:58):
Yeah.
I love that.
You embraced the journeywholeheartedly with your action
and your mindset, and wow, didit pay off from zero to 10 K.
And I love how aligned you havebeen with your art journey.
I love seeing your work.
I love what you're doing.
(25:19):
I love just looking at thispainting behind you, but I think
Chelsea Chelsea and I havespoken offline a whole lot.
She is one of my good friendsand I think alignment
alignment's actually one of mywords of the year.
But I think that.
Why you and I get along so wellis because we both really care
about that in our hearts and ourcareers.
(25:41):
And I'm just so glad we foundeach other.
So thank you so much for comingon the show and sharing your art
journey with our listeners.

(26:04):

that.
