world.
This is the one belief you musthave in order to reach the next
level, whatever that next levelis for you.
We're going to talk about thefour common mistakes that hold
(01:33):
artists back from reaching thenext level.
So you don't do them.
And the one belief that made mybusiness work.
How to have a boo-yah moment.
How to validate yourself rightnow.
And ultimately how to believe inyourself as a professional
artist.
Today is part two of our Januaryjumpstart series.

(03:00):
So, when did you start believingthat you were a professional
artist?
Or is that something that you'restill grappling with?
And if you are, tell me why.
You can share in the episodecomments on Spotify, YouTube.
Or hit me up on social media.
So the first common mistake iswaiting to be deemed a
(03:20):
professional artist.
Listen up.
You have to anoint yourself asthe professional artist.
So if you were driving orpainting, come back to me.
I'll say it again.
You have to anoint yourself asthe professional artist.
There is no accolade thatdistinguishes you between
(03:41):
amateur and professional artist.
And there is no ferry.
That's going to come around andwave a magic wand and say,
you're real artists.
Now you may graduate to the nextlevel.
You have to anoint yourself asthe professional artist.
That deserves to be paidgorgeously for your work.
That deserves to be here.
(04:02):
I am talking to all artists.
Even if you're listening and youhaven't sold your first piece of
work yet.
Whatever the next level is foryou.
You have to believe that youdeserve it.
And that you are capable.
Because your passions are worthit.
If you believe they are.
Common mistake number two.
(04:24):
And let me know if this is you.
Waiting for a special moment tofeel validated.
If you've been holding yourbreath for some arbitrary
moment, I give you permission ifyou felt like you needed it.
Go ahead and exhale.
It's not, I'll be amazing when Iget an art show.
(04:44):
Not, I'll be amazing when I sella giant painting.
No, my love, you must believethat you are a badass right now.
Let me tell you why yourself-belief matters.
It's not just a pretty thing yousay.
You see your thoughts areshaping everything you do.
So if you are an empoweredartist, your daily habits are
(05:07):
shaped by the belief that youare an empowered artist.
You hold that identity and thosegoals.
Your self-belief is the drivingforce behind everything you do
as a creator and business owner.
Feel free to rewind that partand listen again.
I hope you're finding ithelpful.
(05:28):
Common mistake number three islooking for external validation
in the typical places.
Your worth is not tied to anyexternal factors or vanity
metrics like a social mediafollower count.
A gallery show.
Approval from parents, friends,or anyone else in your life.
(05:49):
Let me tell you it's not easy toride through the Artpreneurship
journey alone.
Because those who are closest toyou are not walking in your
shoes.
As an Artpreneur, when you areblazing your own trail, you want
support.
Not fear and warnings.
(06:10):
But that's not always what youget.
Blazing your own trail requiresa lot of courage.
That's why you can't alwayslisten to everyone's advice.
Because even the mostwell-intentioned advice is often
shaped by perceptions and fearthat doesn't have anything to do
with you.
(06:30):
Even your dear parents.
Mine were absolutely shocked, jaws on the floor, when I became
a full-time artist and retiredfrom my corporate safety net.
They didn't have to tell me,they doubted me.
It was so apparent in the manytimes they suggested.
You know, you can always goback." No matter how hard I
(06:54):
worked or the successes that Iwould proudly report to them.
Each holiday or family birthday.
I would come home to a brokenrecord.
You know, Jenna, there's a lotto be said for a 401k and
benefits, yada yada, yada".
Common mistake.
Number four.
Looking for external validationfrom customers or sales.
(07:19):
I know this is a really hardone.
But this is important.
The days that you sell your artand the days that you've don't.
Does not change your value as anartist.
Your customers don't dictateyour value.
Why?
Because you do.
You are the only one who does.
And the best gift you can giveyourself is believing in your
(07:42):
own light.
No one and nothing else has tolight it for you.
Your light is on even if youhave a bad day.
I make a mistake.
You don't feel creative.
Your light is always on.
Your art is valuable if youbelieve it is.
That's important for youremotional wellbeing, but here's
(08:05):
another reason why it'simportant.
If you are passionate about whatyou do.
And believe in yourself.
Your clients feel that energy.
If you don't believe in your artand your worth, then your
clients can feel that energy towhatever energy you're putting
out there.
If it's icky, they feel it.
(08:25):
Trust me.
If your sales aren't where youwant them to be yet.
You can change that.
Learning to market your art is askill.
It's a skill that is verylearnable and it's a skill that
you have to build like a muscle.
The week I started my full-timeart business I had all of the
odds stacked against me.
(08:46):
I was just laid off.
I had no income.
No customer list and no familysupport.
I had no idea what I was doing.
I knew exactly Jack about theart industry.
All I knew is that I had a deepache in my soul to create art
and share it with the world.
Plus the daily mountain ofchronic migraine pain.
(09:10):
Yikes.
But let me tell you about myboo-yah moment.
The same week I was laid off.
I got a huge gig with theMarriott hotel.
And I sent my first four figureinvoice for original paintings
to be hung permanently in thecity.
In my first year, I learnedcountless new skills and I sold
(09:32):
over 100 of my own paintings.
I grew a six-figure art businessand my life has completely
transformed.
Can someone queue Drake'sstarted from the bottom now we
here.
And everything I know is wrappedinto the step-by-step blueprint
in the Artpreneurs Academy soartists like you can create a
life that they love too.
(09:54):
But in the beginning, thingslooked pretty bleak.
So how did this boo-yah momenthappen?
Because I validated myself.
I proclaimed myself to be atotally capable, determined
action taker.
Especially at that very low, critical period.
(10:14):
I didn't let anyone else assignmyself worth.
Like the company who laid meoff.
Or my parents who didn't believein my path.
Because the tables could havereally shifted then, couldn't
they.
That's a future that reallyscares me.
So that's how you can have yourown boo-yah moment.
(10:34):
Validate yourself.
So, this is a great time for usto que Snoop Dogg's"I want to
thank me for being me" speech.
That's the one at the awardceremony where he gets up and he
says, oh, I want to thank myselffor always believing in myself.
You have to empower YOURSELF toembark upon the journey that
(10:55):
will change your life forever.
It's yours for the taking.
So go out and claim it.
Because when you do, you'll haveso many BOOYA'S ahead.
If you don't have all the rightsupport with the ups and downs
(11:18):
and challenges you face alongthe way.
The solo journey can feel morelike torture than excitement.
So don't forget that you cangrab me as your personal coach
right now.
