Speaker 1 (00:24):
Whether you're
approaching the empty nest phase
or already navigating it, we'rehere to support you every step
of the way.
Let's embark on this questtogether.
Hey y'all, welcome to the emptynest quest.
I am actually recording on myown today.
Melinda just left this morning.
I'm recording on a Sunday andMelinda left this morning for
(00:47):
spring break.
It's the University of Georgiaspring break, so I am recording
on my own.
So I miss her dearly and we'llget back together after she gets
back from spring break torecord some more.
But so I thought I know that Ihad mentioned earlier in some
previous episodes that Mike andI are currently doing a book
(01:11):
study on 40 Days to a JoyfulLife, and it's a book.
If you're watching video, it's.
This is the book.
It's by Tommy Newberry and ithas been so impactful for both
of us.
I thought I would do kind of anintro to the book today and
(01:31):
then what I'm planning on doingis truly doing 40 days of each
day, kind of hitting on the mainidea of each day, and I'll do
that through our Instagramstories.
But anyway, I might do anotherpodcast with Melinda with it,
(01:53):
because I'd love for her to readit as well.
But I thought this would besomething great for me to do on
my own, since I'm solo today.
So just to start off, first ofall, I hope everyone is having a
great week and this is Monday, but this will be coming out, so
hopefully everyone will have agreat week.
It's starting to feel likespring here in Georgia a little
(02:15):
bit.
All of the little daffodils arepoking up, poking their heads
up from the dirt, and it's justreally starting to feel like
spring, so that makes me reallyhappy.
It's spring and fall are myfavorite times of the year, so
hopefully you're getting alittle bit of that spring
wherever you are today as well.
But I'm going to start off andthis book 40 Days to a
(02:38):
Jewel-Filled Life.
My daughter, stephanie, introduced me to it and she was
doing it and this is I thinkthis is her second time going
through it and she just reallycould not say enough good things
about it, and so I got this asa gift for Mike this past
Christmas and we decided we weregoing to do it together, and
(02:58):
I'm so glad we did, and so whatI'm going to do is kind of
highlight some of the areas thatI have found the most
beneficial in the introductionand then, like I said, I'll hit
on each day, day by day, in theEmpty Nest Quest stories on
Instagram and Facebook.
So basically, it starts out andit's based on the 4-8 principle
(03:24):
.
Tommy Newberry has actuallywritten another book called the
4-8 principle.
I have not read that, but Idefinitely it's on my list and
it says based on the Philippians4-8, the 4-8 principle states
that whatever you give yourattention to expands in your
experience.
(03:44):
If you dwell on your strengths, your blessings, your goals and
all the people who love you, then you will attract even more
blessings, even more love andeven more accomplishments.
And so that is the basis behindthe 40 days to a joyful life is
(04:04):
Philippians 4, 8.
And you'll hear him say that alot.
So you know it's funny.
The reason why one of thereasons why I love this book is
you'll hear everyone these daysand I know I've said it too,
said it to my children, I say itto other people You've got to
change your mindset.
You know, change your mindset, change your mindset.
(04:25):
That is like a buzzword that'sout there right now.
The problem is is that no onetells you how to do it.
You know, of course, I want tochange my mindset.
Everyone wants a more positivemindset, but you don't know how
to get there.
And I truly feel like this bookgives you the guidelines to
(04:49):
change your mindset.
And so it says this book isabout thinking the way few
people think, and he actuallycalls it the 1%.
There are not many people thatthink this way, there are not
many people that have this typeof mindset, because there are
not many people that go throughthis process.
(05:09):
And so, yeah, it says being fullof joy doesn't mean that your
life is perfect.
It means that you trust thatGod has good plans for your life
, no matter what is happeningright now.
It is an outward sign of aninward faith in God's promises,
(05:30):
and 40 Days to a Joyful Life hasbeen written to help you put
the 4-8 principle into practiceinto your everyday life for the
rest of your life.
And then it goes into sayingit's kind of a boot camp for joy
, which I love that littlesaying I think it's super cute.
(05:53):
And then it says when you putthis book aside at the end of
day 40, you will not bemagically free of trouble and
tragedy, but you will beequipped to process the world,
including the desperate timesand difficult people in a way
that multiplies your joy and thejoy of those with whom you are
(06:17):
investing your life.
And so I think that is soimportant to remember and it's
something that I try to remindpeople of is that just because
you know I have a deep faith andI trust that God is in control
of my life, that does notprevent me from having trouble
(06:43):
and tragedy in my life.
That is a guarantee.
There are not many guaranteesin this life, but you having
trouble and tragedy is aguarantee.
Everyone is going to have thosestumbling blocks, have those
roadblocks in their life.
The question, the thing toremember, is how am I going to
(07:06):
get over those?
How am I going to work throughthat tragedy?
And so, and the troubles thatwe're going to encounter, and
the thing I love, another thingI love about this book yes, it
talks about, like, the majorthings that can happen, but it
also talks about the littlethings.
You know.
Driving down the street and yourun into traffic, somebody
(07:31):
pulls out right in front of youand you lose your mind, you know
it gives you some things to putin place, to try to remember to
where you're not ruining yourwhole day because somebody else
is a total jerk in traffic.
So that's one thing that Ireally really like.
So it says please read throughand I will do the 40 days in
(07:54):
sequence the first time around.
Along the way, I encourage youto reread those special chapters
that seem to be speakingdirectly to you, and I have
flagged things like crazy inthis book.
I've highlighted, I'veunderlined so many things.
So if you do not have this book, please order it.
(08:15):
It's super inexpensive and it'sa little paperback and it will
be well worth it, I promise you.
Let's see.
And it says each chapterconcludes with a brief prayer,
thanking God for his goodnessand inviting his direction as
you attempt to live with morejoy.
(08:35):
So it says finally, considermaking the journey through 40
days to a joy-filled life anannual ritual, and we definitely
will like spring training foryour mental and emotional
fitness.
Just as the best basketballbaseball players in the world
return to the basics before eachseason begins, I encourage you
(08:56):
to revisit the fundamentals forjoy-filled living at least as
often.
So that is something that willdefinitely happen for Mike and I
from here on out.
I can see us, january 1st,definitely starting to pick up
this book, because it is thatimpactful and it's made such a
(09:17):
difference in our lives alreadywe have skipped some days.
You know there will be a couplefew days if we're out of town
we don't read it, or a lot oftimes on the weekends we don't.
But Monday through Friday, during the work week, on in the
mornings, this is our routine.
So I'm going to go ahead andjump into day one and so that
(09:40):
way you'll kind of see, get agood introduction and then
you'll see maybe some things tolook forward to on Instagram
stories and the reels that we'regoing to put out there.
So day one is think this, notthat, the joy of free will.
And it says a healthy bodyproduces energy.
(10:02):
Likewise, a healthy mindproduces joy.
This is not an accident.
If you want to experiencevibrant health and abundant
energy, it is essential that youconsume certain foods and
drinks and refrain fromconsuming others.
The same is true if you want tolose weight or put more muscle
(10:24):
on your frame.
You have to say yes to thefoods that lead you toward your
goal and no to those that leadyou away.
Progress towards joy begins thesame way with a firm decision to
cut back on joy reducingthoughts and increase joy
(10:45):
producing thoughts.
In short, you have to changeyour mental diet.
I love that Changing yourmental diet, and it kind of goes
back to what we have heard somany times before.
If you're expecting a different, a change, and you continue to
do the exact same thing over andover and over again, that is
(11:09):
the definition of insanity.
So stop the insanity and youneed to start thinking
differently.
So let's see, where was I?
In short, you have to changeyour mental diet.
You have to think this, notthat.
After all, joy is the sum andsubstance of emotional health
(11:32):
and you know it's so easy to saybe more joyful, be thankful for
what you have.
But some, it's harder for somepeople than it is others.
And I think this book kind ofgives you some step-by-step
things to remember if you arehaving trouble finding the joy
(11:56):
in your day-to-day.
Let's see Many with the goal ofincreased joy run into the same
predicament.
They keep consuming a mentaldiet mismatched with their goal.
In both instances, there is amajor disconnect between desired
(12:17):
objectives and daily behavior.
Let's see, joy does not dependon the outer conditions of your
material life, but rather on theinner condition of your mental
life.
Let me say that again because Ithink that is really, really
important.
Joy does not depend on theouter conditions of your life.
(12:43):
No, it does not depend on theouter conditions of your
material life, but rather on theinner condition of your mental
life.
Joy is the result of somethingstrikingly simple, though not
necessarily easy Consistentlythinking, joy-producing thoughts
(13:06):
.
So it says.
Before you answer, it says isthis within your grasp?
Is this something you thinkyou're capable of doing?
And before you answer, let meremind you that few endeavors
worth pursuing come easily toanyone, and I have said that so
much.
Anything worth having is worthfighting for.
Anything worth having is goingto be hard.
(13:29):
Do the hard things, and this isworth doing, is going to be
hard.
Do the hard things and this isworth doing.
This hard thing is worth doingbecause living a life full of
joy is absolutely the goal inevery circumstance.
There are risks in shooting forthis gold standard of faith and
action.
There is a high price to bepaid, and it must be paid in
(13:51):
advance.
Certain comfort thoughts willneed to be relinquished.
Counterproductive habits willneed to be abandoned.
Tenured excuses must besurrendered.
Doing these things, thesethings are hard, but they are
worth doing, since you are freeto choose what you think about,
(14:13):
and you have billions of options.
What specific thoughts shouldyou increase to become
joy-filled?
What specific thoughts shouldyou decrease?
What kinds of thoughts willdistress your soul?
What types of thoughts willnourish and hydrate your soul At
any given moment?
We can consciously choose tothink excellent thoughts, not
(14:38):
mediocre thoughts.
Think focused thoughts, notscattered thoughts.
Think fresh, exciting thoughts, not stale, boring thoughts.
And so it goes through anentire list of things.
Think about what you want, notwhat you don't want.
Why is this required forjoy-filled living?
(15:02):
It's very simply stated we tendto bring about what we think
about, and in King Solomon itsays as a person thinks in his
heart, so is he, and that'sProverbs 23, 7.
(15:24):
Building on Solomon's wisdom, james Allen wrote that the outer
world of circumstance shapesitself into the inner world of
thought, and both pleasant andunpleasant external conditions
are factors which make for theultimate good of the individual.
As the reaper of his ownharvest, man learns by both
(15:47):
suffering and bliss and bliss.
It is my intention that duringthe 40-day regimen, you will
start experiencing more of thebliss that is called joy-filled
living.
Starting today, release theneed to hang on to thoughts that
haven't worked well for you.
It is true that what we think,it is true that we can think
(16:15):
this, not that we have thatwithin us to do that.
So you are free to choose yourthoughts and in the next 40 days
, that is what we are going tofocus on.
40 days that is what we aregoing to focus on, and I will do
(16:38):
day two tomorrow and I willcontinue doing day by day
throughout this book until weare finished with the 40 days.
So I want to end, and I willend each day with the prayer
that goes along with that day.
So this was day one, so let uspray.
Heavenly Father, thank you forthe freedom to select my
(16:59):
thoughts Today.
Nudge all of us to think theright thoughts all day long,
amen.
So I hope you all take this bitof information today and I hope
you order 40 Days to aJoy-Filled Life first of all,
and continue to listen to all ofthese nuggets.
(17:22):
They are just.
It has really beenlife-changing for Mike and I and
hopefully it will be for all ofyou as well.
I hope y'all all go out andhave a wonderful week and we
will see you same time, sameplace next week for the Empty
