Speaker 1 (00:00):
You're driving on a
highway and traffic begins to
slow down and you can see allaround you.
You're about to be in a bumperto bumper traffic jam and, if
you're like most people, youlook around and you start to get
frustrated because you have noidea how long this will last.
Now, if you could see way ahead, maybe you can tell this is
(00:22):
going to go on forever.
But when you can't see wayahead, you have no idea how long
you're going to be stuck there.
Is this a mile?
Is it more?
Do you need to figure out otheroptions?
Today I want to talk about theimportance of mapping your
journey.
Welcome to Every Day A NewThought.
I'm Thor Chalgren, and everyday I bring you a new thought
(00:45):
perspective.
Today I want to talk aboutmapping the process, how having
a visual picture in your mindcan help make the journey easier
.
In the beginning I talked aboutthat idea of being in traffic
and, of course, now most of ushave smartphones so we might be
able to see how long thistraffic jam will last.
(01:08):
But if you don't have yourphone with you, or maybe you
haven't mapped out the journeyor think back to before you had
that option, before ways couldtell you how long this is going
to be.
Do you remember what that waslike, where you would slow down,
come to a stop and you had noidea how long this was going to
be.
Was it going to be an hour?
Was it going to be 10 minutes?
(01:30):
Maybe it was only a mile ahead, and then it would speed up
again and then you could relax.
Do you remember what that feltlike if you knew that it was
only a half a mile, or you knewit was only a mile, or maybe it
was only going to be fiveminutes?
You thought of that timedifferently than you did when
you knew, when you had no ideahow long it was going to be.
(01:50):
So, before smartphones andsmart apps could tell us, we
didn't know how long that slowdown would be.
Our imaginations could run wildlike we'd think, oh, this is
going to be forever.
But now we know, because wehave a map of the process, we
can do the same thing withwhatever we're working on,
(02:13):
instead of thinking of a projector a goal or the purpose as
being this open-ended thing thatcould go on indefinitely or
forever.
Have a map of what it lookslike, so that your mind doesn't
have the opportunity to playtricks with you.
You can create a map, adocument that shows what are the
(02:34):
major steps along the way ofwhatever journey you are on.
So, whether you're working on aproject or something, that's a
goal that you want to achieve, when you can create milestones
that tell you how long you'll beon that journey, it prevents
your mind from thinking thiswill go on forever, like you
(02:55):
feel when you're on the highway.
I talk about the idea of atwo-month purpose, which is
something where you can say Iwant to, for two months, set a
goal to do something that I canstart at the beginning and
finish and reach a stage ofcompletion.
So, for instance, you might sayI want to go from sitting on
(03:16):
the couch to running a 5K race,so couch potato to 5K, and I'm
going to do that in two months.
And I can look at a map and sayI know that I need to have this
many runs and at this point, halfway through, I will have
done this.
At three quarters of the waythrough, I will have done this.
You see how doing somethingwhere you map it out and you
(03:36):
have a sense of what it's goingto take allows you to feel more
relaxed along the journeybecause you're not thinking like
, oh my gosh, I'm going to haveto do all of this stuff and when
will it ever end?
If that sounds interesting toyou, I've created a four-part
training series that in videofour I talk about the two-month
(03:58):
purpose in a lot more detail andI give you some examples of
two-month purposes that youmight consider adopting.
This training series is free.
I put the link in the showdescription below, so check that
out.
You'll get a new video from meevery single day.
It's a short video, about sevenminutes.
Watch that and then I've gotsome exercises that you can do
(04:18):
that take you through theprocess of deciding how to put
yourself first, how to decidefor yourself what might be a
two-month purpose for you.
Online, it's easier to startsomething when you can see the
end, so don't be that personstuck in traffic wondering when
this will ever end.
(04:38):
Map out your journey, knowwhere you're going and be happy
on the way getting there.
