and learn on how to learn abouthow to protect your kids and
yourself online.
My name is Craig Petronella.
I'll be your host today.
I'm a licensed digital forensicexpert, so I'll give you the
lens from what a forensicinvestigator looks for in
investigations of predatorycases, and we'll talk more about
(00:35):
that later.
I've been doing this for over22 years with my own private
company and I've got a fewdifferent websites here
Petronella Tech and I've got afew different websites here

So what you need to know today.
We've got a slide deck herethat's got a lot of information
packed and we've got a shortperiod of time, so I'll try to
go at a cadence that isacceptable.
But if somebody thinks that I'mtalking too fast or I'm going
at a fast pace, just raise yourhand or slow me down.

Happy to answer questions atthe end as well.
So I'll try to adjust it to howyou guys are ingesting this
(01:18):
information, because it is a bitof a fire hose.
So I apologize, but obviouslythere's threats on social media.
There's a lot of governmentissues happening right now.
I don't know if you guys haveheard, but Florida, I think, is
banned, or at least there was abill in place.
I don't know if it ever gotpassed, but for social media to
be banned, I think it was lessthan 13 years old.
(01:40):
So we're going to talk a littlebit about that as well as how
to keep yourself and your familysafe online, some best
practices and how you can teachyour kids and educate your kids
in this exciting time, becausewe've also got AI and just a lot
of technological thingshappening things happening.
(02:11):
So number one threat iscyberbullying.
So cyberbullying is basicallythe use of any kind of digital
technology.
It could be just text messaging, imessage, social media, any
kind of online platform.
It's been around forever, sadly, but basically it's been around
(02:35):
forever sadly, but basicallyit's the either adversary,
cybercriminal or whatever on theother end, just harassing and
intimidating.
It happens on social media alot, sadly, especially at a
young age.
We'll talk more about that aswell, with platforms that are
chosen nowadays, like Discordand things like that, by cyber
predators.
You can help your kids byencouraging open communication,
(02:56):
trying to allow them to embracetechnology in healthy ways with
the family so that it's not likein their bedroom, for example.
I would recommend somethinglike that oh, looks like we got
somebody joining here.
Speaker 1 (03:10):
Yeah, I just admitted .
Speaker 2 (03:13):
So we're going to teach you a little bit about how
to identify if there's asituation and how to block or
report cyber bullies or signsthat you can look at, or look
for Proactive steps to educateand communicate as well.
So online predators areindividuals who use the internet
(03:36):
to exploit and manipulateothers, typically targeting
children and adolescents forgrooming, manipulation and
exploitation.
Targeting children andadolescents for grooming,
manipulation and exploitation.
The consequences can be severe,like we talked about,
depression, long-lastingpsychological impacts, physical,
emotional, suicidal tendencies.
(03:57):
So protecting your family fromthese predators requires a
proactive approach, witheducation, such as security
awareness, training,communication and monitoring,
and we'll talk about differenttechnology tools that you can
use in your household as well.
So inappropriate content canvary widely, but generally it's
(04:23):
not suitable for children.
There could be violence, therecould be other harmful pictures,
words, etc.
And kids can stumble upon thiscontent through unintentional
means, even YouTube.
Youtube has a version for kids,but it's not perfect.
(04:45):
It does use AI.
It's not policed very well.
So I don't recommend justgiving a kid a laptop or an iPad
, for example, and saying, oh,you could just use YouTube Kids.
It's just, it's not perfectenough and there's just been a
lot of mistakes.
That's just an example.
But real life consequences ofinteracting underscore the
(05:11):
importance of supervision andfostering that open
communication.
This is why I recommend notallowing devices um, unattended
or on on quote-unquote, policed,uh or monitored, because you
just it's, it just makes itreally difficult as a parent.
(05:31):
So I'm sure that most of you areaware of what phishing is, or
scams.
Phishing is really, um, evolvedinto what's called smishing.
Basically, basically, it's anemail that is oftentimes spoofed
or faked.
It looks like it came from atrusted person or a coworker,
(05:52):
but oftentimes it's not.
And you can scroll over theemail with your mouse if you're
on a computer, and oftentimesyou'll find that the email
address, even though it says orthe name says that it's
something that might identifywith you, oftentimes the email
address is different.
Or if you look at the links orattachments in the emails,
(06:15):
you'll see that if you hoverover them they go to websites
that you may not be familiarwith.
So we never recommend openingattachments or clicking on links
and emails.
But for children that aren't aseducated and teens, you know
they could easily get tricked.
So we always recommendcontinuous education and even
(06:37):
drills and testing, making fungames out of it to make it
engaging so that they can learnthese tricks Now with cell
phones and mobile devices.
The smishing attacks I justrecommend that kids don't open
attachments period, don't clickon links period, because it's
really.
You can't hover over a link ona text message.
(06:59):
And now there's a new exploit inthe wild.
I don't know if you've heardthis on the news yesterday, but
there's a nasty what's called azero day for Apple devices with
iMessage.
So it's been recommended todisable iMessage for the time
being, until Apple addresses asecurity patch.
But there's really bad spywareand groups out there that can
(07:24):
now infect a device or avictim's device without even
clicking on anything.
So you just the nso spyware.
Um called pegasus is the mostfamous one for this where nation
states will target journalists,where they can just basically
just send this malicioussoftware to the victim.
(07:44):
They don't have to openanything and they're compromised
unless they have a new featureApple introduced called lockdown
mode or some other enhancedsecurity to protect themselves.
But just a regular device willget immediately infected.
So it's really easy for kidsand children to fall victim to
these phishing and smishing.
(08:05):
And then scams you know people,scammers will call on the
telephone, they'll do socialengineering, they'll do
impersonations.
They'll leverage new technologywith AI and deep fake
technology, impersonation ofvoices that might be familiar to
them, depending on the level ofsophistication of the attack.
But you know, we alwaysrecommend proactively educating
(08:30):
your family, trying to stayahead of these threats, and I'll
give links at the end of thepresentation for some good
organizations like CISA tofollow.
Obviously, you may be aware ofoveruse, of an addiction to
technology.
It could range from gaming,social media consumption.
(08:55):
Apple introduced a featurecalled screen time, which is a
good barometer, so to speak, ofthat.
You can limit the amount oftime that you give your family
or your children access, you canschedule a time that the
devices are allowed to be usedand prohibit certain times of
the day, and you can even dothis in a business too.
(09:18):
Years ago I remember we put intechnology called WebSense at
the time, and it was internetcontent filtering and monitoring
, and found that, you know,during the lunch hour, for
example, it was allowed to,employees were allowed to surf
the Internet and basically havefreedom, but during the work
(09:39):
hours there were some securitycontrols put in place to
prohibit access to certainwebsites and basically it
increased productivities.
So overuse can lead to healthdifficulties with mental health,
eyestrain, headaches, stress,anxiety and excessive use can
(10:03):
really have negative impacts.
So internet addiction canresult in decreased productivity
for academic or job performanceand withdrawal symptoms.
I don't know if you've evergiven your children an iPad for
too long but then you could tellthat they just sometimes they
(10:23):
get angry.
But then you could tell thatthey just sometimes they get
angry.
It's like a real thing wherethere's dopamine that's released
in gaming and in certaintechnology situations.
Privacy concerns I'm sureyou've seen the long licenses of
(10:47):
things that we have to acceptwhen you install an application
or piece of software.
Oftentimes it's pages long.
But there's concerns for kidsand teens online sharing
personal information a lot onsocial media platforms.
There's a popular app calledSnapchat.
I'm sure you've heard of that.
That's popular among teens, buta lot of kids they don't
(11:07):
realize that the other end ofthe communication or in this
case, if we use Snapchat as anexample, they can take
screenshots.
So just because you're using aplatform like Snapchat, that has
what's called disappearingmessages and the child may think
, oh well, this is private,nobody can see this.
(11:27):
That's actually not true.
And there's also what's calledkeystroke logging tools and
malicious software that could beused, that will circumvent the
security of those platforms too.
So, basically, if it's online,it's online forever.
So, basically, if it's online,it's online forever, and we need
to teach our kids that way.
(11:47):
So children they might notreally fully understand that
there could be such negativeimpacts from using some of these
platforms.
So it's important to go back tothe education and not teach
them to don't use your real name.
Try to use an alias when you'reonline.
Don't give out your address oryour school that you go to or
(12:13):
photos.
You want to really try to teachthem to be restrictive on any
information that they share anddon't even post about.
Hey, I'm going on vacation orI'm you know.
(12:34):
You don't want to invitecriminal or just issues from
happening that you could beprofiled.
Privacy settings a lot of theplatforms do offer privacy
settings where you could controlcertain restrictions that they
can be properly configured.
They're not that great and theydon't always work all the time,
but for what you're given,definitely explore and educate
(12:54):
yourselves on the options thatyou have at your fingertips.
Cybersecurity threats we talkedabout don't click on suspicious
links.
But kids they may not know anybetter and they may click on
these links, so we need to teachthem to not click on links.
I don't even recommendanswering the phone live anymore
because there's so much AI andscamming going around now and
(13:19):
robocalls.
So you can certainly filteryour phones.
So you can certainly filteryour phones.
There are apps calledRoboKiller, there's a RoboKiller
app and there's a couple otherapps that exist that will help
filter your phone calls for you.
Malwarebytes makes a reallygood filtering solution, so
those could be options to helpwith this.
(13:40):
You could do it manually, ofcourse, as well, but you don't
want to ever click on pop-ups.
Oftentimes, pop-ups will leadto malicious websites and that's
how you'll get malware and badstuff on your computer system,
like viruses, spyware, etc.
Um, gotta be careful with thethe personal information again.
You know children may notrealize that they're sharing
(14:04):
sensitive information homeaddress.
Never share passwords,financial details you never want
to put your household at risk.
They you know kids may also notreally understand cybersecurity
best practices.
Using unique software passwordson different platforms.
Don't reuse passwords.
(14:25):
Try to use what's called anencrypted password manager.
Kids might not realize thatit's actually really risky to
use the free internet at, likeStarbucks, for example.
You don't want to do thatbecause there could be somebody
on that network that could sniffout passwords that are saved on
(14:47):
your computer, like, forexample, if your computer checks
for new email or something likethat.
Um, that's how your passwordcan get compromised, so you want
to try to use a VPN to protectyourself there.
Speaker 1 (14:59):
What was the?
Uh, the, the filtering solutionthat you mentioned for phone
calls.
Speaker 2 (15:03):
Uh, there's two.
There's what's calledRoboKiller is one app, and then
there's another one calledMalwarebytes B-Y-T-E-S.
Thank you, thank you, yep.
So social media consumptionobviously you're aware of Meta,
facebook, twitter, linkedin, allthese social channels Facebook,
(15:32):
twitter, linkedin, all thesesocial channels.
They kind of create a culturewhere kids can almost feel like
they can get persuaded in thesesocial platforms and you just
got to be really careful withmonitoring what they're allowed
to do, what they're not allowedto do.
There's a good program calledBark.
I think Grace uses Bark for alot of their management.
I like that software because itreally can filter and monitor
(15:59):
your child, what they're typing,their typing and I'm not saying
that you need to completelyinvade your child's privacy, but
you want to try to usesomething or a platform like
Bark that can trigger keywordsor things that might look like
cyberbullying.
Or maybe you have keywords inthere where an address or
(16:21):
something would put a filter inthere and then you'd get a
notification to kind of just youknow, peek in to see what's
going on, to see if this isleading down to something bad
happening.
But obviously social media hasbeen under heat recently with
Congress, with the impacts onkids' self-esteem and their
(16:43):
mental health.
So that's why certain stateslike Florida are introducing
those bills to ban it for youngchildren because of the
influence that it has.
So cyberbullying is probablythe number one risk on social
media, where you know a lot ofpredators will hang out there on
(17:08):
Facebook, facebook marketplace,try to trick people if they're
buying or selling something, andalso just kind of trolls that
are just looking for to pick afight and try to, you know, rope
people into the conversationand then it just becomes a
banter and gets out of controlreally fast.
(17:29):
Other platforms that are newerthat you may not be aware of are
called Discord.
Discord is an app that waspopular with gamers.
It does have some good piecesto it and does have some real
world function.
However, recently cybercriminals have been lurking in
(17:50):
the platform of Discord andthere was actually a few weeks
ago a really disturbing articlethat was published in the
Washington Post about howDiscord was the platform chosen
by terrorists to persuade youngkids into suicide, and it was
(18:11):
really really depressing andeye-opening article.
That is just it's horrible todo more to educate our kids and
and make sure that, um, they'renot using platforms like this
and getting roped in by somebodythat they think could be
(18:33):
different.
On the other end, um, maybethey think it's a friend, but
it's not.
Um so obviously privacyconcerns that we talked about,
negative impacts on theirself-esteem, depression,
loneliness, etc.

Greg, can I interrupt ?
This is Lisa McCarthy and I'msorry.
I'm a STEM teacher and theseare lots of things that we talk
about in seventh grade.
And just for any parents outthere, about the Discord thing,
students are absolutely talkingto people they have no idea who
they are and when we have thatdiscussion in class it scares me
(19:11):
that I mean they are very naiveand they really need parent
overwatch and supervision, andeven not just discord but with
other gaming systems where theycan chat online in games, these
students are telling all kindsof things that they shouldn't be
sharing with people that theyhave no idea who they are.
(19:31):
So just, I mean it's not.
This is like really serious,and I just want to emphasize how
serious that is because I hearit all the time here in the
classroom.
Speaker 2 (19:42):
Yeah, and you're absolutely correct, and it's not
just Discord, it's everythingright, but Discord seems to be
the platform of choice recently.
But you're absolutely right, Idon't recommend allowing kids to
accept friend requests, evenfrom a game that they just
played a Mario Kart with orwhatever.
If they don't know the personon the other end, there's really
(20:04):
no reason to accept a friendrequest, and so it goes back to
business too.
There's a lot of laws calledKYC or know your customer.
But bringing that home withDiscord, you shouldn't be
talking to somebody that youdon't know.
We're taught it when we'regrowing up.
You don't talk to strangers,right?
So it's no different online.
(20:24):
But I think kids are less strictwith it because they don't feel
I think they just think thatit's harmless.
But it actually could lead topersuasion and it could lead to
bad things happening, and that'swhere the trafficking and the
profiling and the predatorybehaviors can rope them in and
(20:46):
that's where it gets really bad.
But you're absolutely right,and that's what we need to do as
parents to police that andbetter educate our kids around
that.
That it's not necessarily thatyou can't use Discord if there's
a legitimate use case for it,but if you can't see or have the
capability to monitor yourchild, then consider using
(21:09):
something like Bark or someother type of software like that
on the device to help not asubstitute, but to help aid the
parent in.
Hey look, this could be.
Here's some keyword triggersthat you can, so if you're at
work, for example, you can getnotices and alerts and things
(21:30):
like that.
But yeah, it's a bad area rightnow and that article in
Washington Post was terrible.
I don't know if you've seenthat.
Speaker 1 (21:44):
We got a lot of questions coming in the chat and
at the end of our presentationI think we're going to reserve
some time to kind of, you know,ask you guys and get some some
parent feedback about what theirbiggest concerns are with their
children online and maybe eventalk about things that you guys
are currently doing now and givesome some remediation
suggestions.
Speaker 2 (22:04):
Yep, absolutely, you know.
I'll try to pick up the pace alittle bit and then have more
time for questions we talkedabout.
Obviously, privacy concernsinappropriate content.
There's actually devices.
There's a gab phone, forexample.
Gabb I know a lot of.
You know young kids and youknow young kids and you know
(22:27):
tweens or approaching teenageyears want a phone.
Everybody wants an iPhone orwhatever the latest Droid device
is, and that's fine.
However, if you don't have themonitoring and the knowledge,
know-how and education toproperly lock down that device,
that could be a gateway intosome really bad things that
(22:51):
could happen.
So the Gab device is actuallypretty cool.
It's a lockdown Android phoneand it does have filtering
software that it comes with andit's using really the approach
of there used to be in thetechnical world, the whitelist,
blacklist or the allow list,block list.
So by default the phone haslimited functionality and some
(23:16):
kids don't like that becausethey can't install their
favorite app.
It has to be approved andthere's only a select number of
them that are vetted and testedand approved.
But that does help the parentthough, because if you take and
allow only a pro or a block onlyand allow only a certain list
of applications.
It makes the parental controland monitoring of the device and
(23:39):
your child easier because youhave less things to pay
attention to and watch, but youstill need to watch the apps
that are allowed.
Um for all of the above thatwe're talking about, but here
with with discord and telegram.
Telegram is just anotherencrypted messaging platform
similar to signal um.
(24:00):
They're all very similar.
It's that, as parents, you needto be aware of these names so
that you could see if they'reinstalled on your kid's devices
and if they are and they don'thave a legitimate purpose, my
recommendation would be toremove them.
The Gab device actually hassome filtering, so if a kid took
(24:40):
a nude picture, for example, itwould get detected by the AI,
immediately blocked and notifythe parent.
So that's pretty cool.
These platforms to eitherrootkit or get deep access into
that device to compromise it andcapture sensitive information
on it.
We talked a little bit about theWashington Post article where
(25:03):
the young kids are and this isstill happening.
This is why this is really badand that parents should know
about it, because a lot ofparents do think that these apps
are safe and they do think thata lot of these games are safe
and things like that.
There's predatory behaviorhappening and conversations on
the game happening that you'renot or have no knowledge of that
(25:27):
part could lead into bad things.
So it's not necessarily so.
For example, if your kid'splaying Nintendo Mario Kart and
they get a friend request andyou don't know who that friend
is, but they accept it withoutyour permission and now they
have a conversation with thisother person and this has been
going on for months, thepredator oftentimes will move
(25:50):
the conversation off of thatplatform in this case, mario
Kart to something like Telegram,discord, signal or other more
secure method of communicationto continue that conversation
and then continue to groom theminto sometimes self-harm or
violent acts.
I'm sure you guys are aware ofa lot of the TikTok.
(26:12):
You know the contests and thethings that they do there.
They do similar things here onthese platforms.
So this is where it becomes,where the parents don't have a
lot of knowledge of theseplatforms and sometimes the
conversations go unsupervised.
So here's where we're going togo more into like tactics and
(26:41):
what you can do to keep yourfamily safe on online and on
social media.
Obviously, we talked abouteducation, talked about
cyberbullying.
Leverage the privacy settingsyou know.
Configure them properly, gothrough them with your children,
educate them on what they, whatthey're allowed to do, what
(27:01):
they're not allowed to do, anddo spot checks and drills as a
parent to kind of just poke andmake sure things are okay.
Encourage that opencommunication and talk to them.
If you use a filtering systemlike Bark, that could help with
certain keywords that triggercertain conversations that could
(27:23):
be had.
So we talked about using freeinternet.
It's not recommended.
If you have to use the internet, use your provider, at&t,
verizon, directly.
If you don't have a data planthat's strong enough for what
you're trying to do.
And you have to use the Wi-Fi,that's okay, but you need to put
(27:44):
a layer of security called aVPN.
There are many different kindsof VPNs that you can use
personal and business.
I know Proton and Nord are somepopular ones for personal and
then there's different businessones as well.
So security training, securityawareness training, physically
(28:09):
covering cameras on devicesthat's a real thing.
I don't know if you guys areaware, but Zuckerberg he was.
This was years ago.
Do you remember this, blake,when he had like a?
It was either electrical tapeor something on top of his
camera.
Yeah, it was a sticker that waspretty famous.
Yeah, and same thing with, likeyour iPhones and your other
(28:33):
devices too.
I mean, there's only so muchtrust you can place in the
vendor.
We'll just use Apple as anexample.
Apple's generally great withsecurity and arguably can be one
of the leaders in security formobile.
However, you can't just trustOK, Apple's got everything
secure for me and I need to donothing.
There's what's called theshared responsibility model, and
(28:57):
while in this case, Apple hasprovided great security tools
for the users, it doesn't meanthat Apple's doing everything
for you.
As a user of the technology, youneed to educate yourself and
learn about what options youhave and then the pros and cons
of it.
For example, Apple introducedwhen journalists were being
(29:20):
targeted and continue to betargeted.
Apple introduced a featurecalled lockdown mode, and
lockdown mode is a recommendedtool that Apple gives you for
all Apple users, where you cango in settings and turn it on.
However, because it's moresecure, some things are no
longer going to work, and one ofthose things are like we talked
(29:43):
about earlier.
Don't click on links and textmessages, for example.
Well, if you have lockdown modeenabled, then the links by
default, Apple will screen themand they're not clickable
anymore.
So it's just an extraheightened layer of security and
it may not work with yourworkflow or certain applications
that you use.
So my recommendation is try it,see how it works for you.
(30:05):
If you can handle it, then keepit on.
If it doesn't work and youcan't function, then turn it off
and try to look for alternativesecurity layers that you can
introduce.
Whenever you're doing billingor anything sensitive paying
(30:25):
taxes online, for example, younever want to click on links in
emails, text messages, et cetera, or any of these platforms.
You always go directly to thewebsite.
So go directly to your bank, godirectly to if you're going to
the IRS or whatever.
Don't click on links fromanything anywhere, because
oftentimes those links aremalicious.
(30:48):
We talked about parental controlsoftware that you can use.
Two-factor or multi-factorauthentication is highly
recommended for any platformthat supports it and any
platform, including Apple,Microsoft, Google.
Always back up your dataseparately.
(31:08):
Don't trust those platforms todo that for you.
It's typically not included andout of scope.
So, for backup of your kids'photos or important information,
have a separate backup plan andbackup system.
Have a separate backup plan andbackup system.
So some tools that we talkedabout.
In some of these we haveaffiliated relationships where
(31:31):
we've negotiated cheaper prices.
So when the presentation's overI'll send the deck over and you
can take advantage of that.
So Bark we talked about is areally good software solution
for mobile devices and computersthat really will help parents
with the monitoring of theirchildren online.
Opendns FamilyShield is a goodnetwork or DNS layer that will
(31:56):
help with content filtering, andQuad9 is actually a free
solution that's similar.
The difference is you can't doany granular control with
something like Quad9.
You can't say I want to allowor I want to block a particular
website.
It doesn't work like that.
(32:16):

So a hotspot.
You can turn your phone if youhave like an iPhone for example,
you can enable what's called ahotspot feature so that other
devices can then connect throughyour phone and get to the
internet, for example.
So there's that function orfeature.
And then VPN is a separatelayer, a security layer called a

virtual private network.
And so, for example I thinkwhat you're asking is so let's
say you have an iPhone and youconnect the app on the iPhone.
We'll just use an examplecalled ProtonVPN.
So let's say the iPhone has anapp called ProtonVPN that you've
installed, configured, you havean account, you can enable that

VPN connect.
It'll say connected and showthat it's working, and then you
can go in settings on thatiPhone and turn on the hotspot
and then devices that connect toyour iPhone or through your
iPhone and turn on the hotspot,and then devices that connect to
your iPhone or through youriPhone and out to the internet
will then have the VPNconnection.

devices can connect through youriPhone and get a secure

So what we've done as a familyis we have an iPad and we have

And there's still that balanceand argument today, right, like,
how much monitoring of employeeactivity is too much and does

If, if the argument on theother side is that's invasion of
privacy, well, the otherargument could be that you're
keeping your kid more safebecause you're monitoring, your

that they're not they have.
I think, in my opinion, they'retoo young to have the the no

Right, so you would hope thatwhen they go, they grow up to be
18, that they would have enoughknowledge around you know,

keystroke logging, for example,so you can say, look, you can
use this device, you know, butI'm going to allow, as your
parent, I'm going to be checking, spot checking, you know, and
that's our agreement on.
You know, your privacy is yourprivacy and that's fine.
But every now and then I'mgoing to check and make sure
things are okay.
But if you don't, you couldchoose to not do that, but then

using an Android device as theGoogle Play store, you know so
obviously restricting, and thereis a feature that people cannot
download apps through thirdparty marketplaces.
So essentially you lock thatdevice down to only be able to
download apps from the app store.
(01:03:41):
But then even a step further ishow those apps are collecting
and accessing that device.
So you can see, for example, ifyou download, for example,
duolingo, if your child'slearning a second language, you
can see that that device willhave access to the microphone,
obviously ESPN.
If your child is the baseballkid super into whatever baseball
(01:04:05):
team, obviously ESPN does notneed access to your microphone.
So making parental decisionslike that it starts there.
That's a great place to start.
It doesn't take too much timeto go through that.
Speaker 2 (01:04:20):
Yeah that's a good point and the same with location
data.
So GPS location data.
You may not want to allow thatfor certain applications.
There's no reason why that theapp needs to know where you are
or where the device is at alltimes, for example.
Speaker 1 (01:04:35):
Yeah, especially for app specific, like why would
ESPN need to collect yourchild's location?
Right, you know the weathermakes more sense, right?
And then obviously, be be inmind if you do turn off some of
those, uh, those privacysettings, the geolocation
settings.
You know, if you're using your,your iphone or whatever, uh, as
a find, my, to track your, yourchild's movements, um, you know
(01:04:58):
, obviously, be aware thatturning that, that capability
off, um, the geolocationsettings on the phone, would
disable that, at which point youcould get some type of air tag
or some you know tile orsomething like that to, you know
, put in their backpack.
And having the discussion, ofcourse, with your children.
You know, obviously I'm not aparent, so I'm only coming here
from a cybersecurity perspective, so, but you know, some of you
(01:05:22):
sounds like your children are atthe age where you can't have
that discussion.
Um, you know, obviously,children, you guys do a good job
of protecting your children.
You know, you guys are here,you guys are proactive, um, you
know, but the world is a reallyscary place, um, and having that
discussion and coming from theperspective of hey, this is, you
know, not me trying to be acrazy parent, but this is me
(01:05:43):
trying to protect you, which ismy job right, my duty as a
parent.
I'm not sure how that wouldprogress, but it's a great
starting place as well, I think.

It's not the newest film, I think it's a few years
old and they had some software,seemed like, for younger kids
associated with it.
I'm not sure how up-to-date thesoftware is now, but they

presented some real-lifesituations, like you mentioned,
about kids who'd gotten introuble from various ages and
what to do to protect against itand some of the consequences
some of those people suffered.
Some of them are several yearsout from having resolved those
problems.
It was very impactful.
I say patiently because youknow kids have the attention
span of a fruit fly sounbelievably.

They watched it attentively andthey're 14 and 19 now.
I think we watched a coupleyears ago.
I think it had a little bit ofa positive.
You know we struggle with thisstuff, like I think everybody
does, but it had a little bit ofan impact because of the
real-life scenarios it portrayed.

Yeah, I'll have to check it out.
Speaker 1 (01:07:28):
That's always scary to think about it.
It's really hard for me, youknow, obviously, like I said, I
don't have any children, but Ido have a wife and obviously I'm
in the industry thecybersecurity industry.
Obviously, I've been workinghere for now, I think, four or
five years, but I've seen a lotin my time here and, uh, it's
definitely opened my eyes as tohow you, you, how I use my
(01:07:50):
device, you know how I use mycomputer, Um, even, of course,
my wife, you know how she usesher device.
You know, cause a lot of, um,people who aren't aware, just
use their device mindlessly,right, you know they're
scrolling through Instagram,they're doing this, and so it's
opened my eyes a lot.
And so, yeah, the fact that youguys are here is awesome, that
(01:08:11):
you guys are actually takinginterest in how your children
are using their devices,protecting them.
You know the intent is there.
That's a great motivationalperspective here, you know.
So you guys are taking interest, you guys care about your
children, you guys care how toprotect them.
You guys realize this is ascary world, so, um, so, yeah, I
(01:08:33):
just wanted to to salute youguys.

Well, awesome.
The only thing that we didn'ttalk about was the Faraday bag.
I don't know if you want tomaybe talk about that, but a
Faraday bag is basically a bagtypically made of foil or some
type of metal that will foilcommunication.
So like, for example, if youwanted to really make sure that
(01:09:00):
your device is disconnected andnot able to be spied on through
either a malicious softwareapplication or whatever, you can
put it in a Faraday bag and,you know, have safety there so
that there is a purpose for that.
It's the same for key fobs onyour car, you know, to prevent
car theft the latest car theftsor with repeater devices hopping
(01:09:26):
off of your.
So most people, like at home,you know, before they go to bed
they they hang their keys on ahook or something and it's
typically pretty close to thevehicle in the driveway.
So you know, faraday bag is agreat solution to drop your keys
and stuff in it at night orwhenever you don't want anybody
else to have access, to bounce asignal off it.
That's another, you know, quick, quick kind of thing.
(01:09:49):
That's a good security practice.
But yeah, we're a little overon time.

With regard to Faraday bags,how secure are those travel
pouches like Eagle Creek orsomething you buy in Target that
says it has RFID blocking?
I tried one of those at workscanning my badge through doors
at a hospital and it didn'tprevent the ID card scanning,

but I'm not sure how useful itis otherwise.
You have any idea about that?
Speaker 2 (01:10:47):
yeah, there's definitely.
You know, with anything else,there's quality levels, so some
of them are not effective.
Um, they don't have a thickenough wall of of blocking.
So, uh, yeah, different qualitylevels that I you can certainly
test them.
There's easy ways to test them,but I would invest in one
that's a little bit thickerwalled.

There's also different frequency bands.
So like, for example, RFID likethat you would typically see
for like a wallet or somethinglike a passport, is typically a
lower frequency than thansomething like maybe your your
access pass for, for a door atthe hospital or whatever right.

So there's a good chance.
It was working for radiofrequency, just not for scanning
type frequencies.
Speaker 1 (01:11:33):
Yeah, I mean, there's tons of ranges of frequencies
that these devices pass, Likeultra high frequency ranges can
be from anywhere from 300 to athousand megahertz versus, you
know, a low frequency rangewould be you know, 400 ish,
right, so um and up.
So it just depends on on thetype of device you're trying to
(01:11:55):
block um and the frequencyranges that it passes.
Um, but a lot of times those uh, those badges you know for
doors and access points aredesigned for higher frequency
ranges.
So so yeah, okay, thanks a lot,yep well, thank you guys, I
