Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to Endorphasm
, where we talk about all things
.
Endorphasm, I'm your hostess, erica Porter, and I'm just kind
of giggling as I say that, because Carlo's always laughing
at me for saying hostess.
He's like nobody says hostess.
Everybody refers to themselvesas a host and therefore, more of
the reason why I will foreverrefer to myself as the hostess
(00:25):
the hostess with the mostest.
So I want to talk about andI've talked about this before is
my love-hate relationship withsocial media and fitness advice.
It's on my mind constantlybecause I'm always asked like
what do you eat, erica?
What do you do?
(00:46):
Okay, the love haterelationship I have with social
media, its purpose and theirresponsibility of people using
it, is what drives me batshitcrazy.
I have been in the fitnessindustry for over 30 years
(01:07):
certified, educated, re-educated, deliberate in my approach as a
trainer and a coach.
I stay in my wheelhouse, I takemy work seriously, but I also
see a lot of nonsense out there, and today I want to break it
(01:27):
down.
Social media I can't get mylittle my messing with my
computer.
There's a lot of misinformation.
Here's the thing I am not aregistered dietitian and I do
not give nutrition advicebecause I am not qualified to do
(01:52):
so what I do is express thevalue of keeping things in their
most natural state andlistening to how your body feels
.
That's the key your body, yourrules.
I could eat ice cream forbreakfast, lunch and dinner and
feel amazing.
Someone else might feel likeabsolute garbage.
(02:15):
We're all different, but here'swhere social media messes
things up.
People are following fitnessinfluencers simply because they
look good in a bikini, in boardshorts, whatever it is.
They never stop and ask whatare their actual qualifications?
What have they done beyondlooking good?
(02:39):
Are they even educated in thefield?
Are they even educated in thefield?
Why are we blindly followingsomeone who sells a lifestyle,
not a science-backed approach tomovement, my approach to
nutrition and movement.
And let me be very real I don'tmeal prep, I don't take
(03:02):
supplements, I don't use proteinpowders.
I barely get 50 grams ofprotein a day.
I eat what I like Pancakes, bagels, ice cream, beans, chips
I'll put spinach in my stuff, broccoli, whatever it is.
And guess what?
I feel great because how I lookis fleeting.
(03:23):
It's not how I measure myself-worth.
Aging, having a baby, fightingcancers, those things fucked
with my body.
And if I based my happinesssolely on what I see in the
mirror I would be depressed andangry and annoyed, and that's
not to say that I don't lookfucking amazing, because to me I
(03:45):
absolutely do.
But how I looked prior tocancer, how I looked prior to a
baby, is a very different than50-year-old Erica Porter sitting
here in my house recording thispodcast.
It is not the same, but that iswhy I move not to look a
(04:10):
certain way, but to feel acertain way.
And, trust me, I lived in aspace where I thought my value
was solely dependent on how Ilooked.
The truth about fitness, thetruth about my fitness journey,
is I make a living sharing thejoys of movement, but not
(04:33):
because it makes you look good, because it makes you feel good
and listen.
That's not to say that weshould not embrace when we've
had transformations, or weshould not be overjoyed when we
put in work and we like what wesee.
(04:55):
That's okay, but if you aresolely basing your happiness,
and what you feel is yourself-worth on that, that is
dangerous, it is unhealthy.
And again, the body, how itlooks, is fleeting.
Everything in life is fleeting.
(05:15):
How we feel, though.
How we feel is the most longlasting thing we will ever have,
and it's so critical in ourlife.
Movement makes you feel good.
Movement is essential.
(05:36):
It is a game changer.
It allows us to operate withconfidence and ease.
So here's an exercise I wantyou to do, and I don't mean
movement.
I want you to step in front ofa mirror, I want you to take a
look in the mirror and now Iwant you to close your eyes and
(05:58):
I want you to tell me what yousee.
That's what's real Social media.
That's a highlight reel.
Don't let it dictate how youvalue yourself.
So, before you take advice fromsomeone online, ask yourself is
(06:22):
this person really helping meout or just selling me something
?
Be deliberate, be intentional, move for you and, most
importantly, trust how you feelover how you look.
Trust how you feel over how youlook.
That is it Love, health andhappiness and always much
(06:46):
respect.
