Welcome to another episode of Engineer Innovation— a podcast for engineers, by engineers. Because we all want to build a better tomorrow, faster.

One of the main differences between combustion engine vehicles and electric vehicles is the level of noise generated. Combustion engines are loud while the latter is very quiet.

While the lack of noise can be interpreted as a benefit, it also presents a few problems. First, it makes the vehicle unsafe to other road users who rely on vehicle sounds to understand the speed and direction of movement. It also unmasks other noises such as the aircon and motor thumping noises that are masked by engine noise in combustion vehicles.

This is why noise testing is an important concept in electric vehicles. It allows OEMs to understand how they can reduce unnecessary noise and introduce active noise for safety and comfort purposes.

I’m your host, Chad Ghalamz. Today, I’m joined by Katleen Michiels, who heads a testing group within Engineering Services in the Center of Excellence of Performance Engineering.

Join us as we discuss the importance of noise testing in electric vehicle development.

In this episode, you will learn:

  • Katleen’s view on electric cars (04:00)
  • What testing electric vehicles entails (05:48)
  • Differences between combustion engine vehicles and electric vehicles (08:10)
  • The most common misunderstanding about vehicle testing (11:05)
  • The importance of active sound in electric vehicles (14:45)
