(00:02):
It seems like we all have acousin THEODA friend that has heard Laurona.
The following is a story of akid who stayed up a bit too late
and heard something that maybe he didn'twant to hear. I'm Christina and this
is spooky Stories, where every storyis based on real events. Listen,

(00:26):
Escucia at your own risk. Itwas a night like any other. Everyone
was asleep except for me. Ihave trouble sleeping, always have. I
could hear my parents snaring in theroom. My little brother wasn't there that
night, and he was staying withour cousins a sleepover. I was eleven

(00:50):
at that time, and I didn'twant to go. I thought I was
too cool for that. Instead,I was in the living room watching Jay
Leno. Late night TV kept meaway on those long nights. We only
had the one TV and it wasin the living room, so I always
left my bed and sat on thecouch when I couldn't sleep. My parents

(01:11):
never noticed, or they didn't care. Maybe they were too tired to notice.
I don't know. They never saidanything to me about it. I
must have dozed off at some point, because last I checked, it was
eleven PM. But my watch saidfour am. Although lights were off,
it was quiet, too quiet.Even the TV was off, but I

(01:34):
didn't remember turning it off. Ithought maybe the storm took the electricity out
for a second. Four am.I never liked that hour, probably because
of everything I had heard as akid. My family always said that was
the witching hour. They had allsorts of stories about ghosts and witches and
well everything. They especially said nothinggood happened after midnight, but three am

(02:00):
that was the devil's hour, andwell four am was just too close to
three am. The worst stories alwaystook place in Mexico, So at that
time that this happened, I thoughtI was safe, and my eleven year
old brain, I was pretty farfrom Mexico therefore safe. Really, I
was pretty close the house that welived in back then. It was in

(02:23):
the RGV, the Rio Grande Valleyin Texas. But in my eleven year
old brain, those scary stories myfamily always told they didn't happen here,
They only happened in Mexico, soI was safe. I had taken another
look at my watch four or fiveam. I rubbed my eyes and thought

(02:45):
maybe I'd fall asleep again. IfI went to bed, so I stood
up to head to bed, andthat's when I heard a sound. I
couldn't place the sound, not untilI heard it again. It was screaming.
No, not screaming, crying. If scream crying was a word that

(03:07):
would have described what I heard thatnight, A woman crying and maybe screaming
a little bit. I was alittle scared, but I started freaking out
a bit more when I remembered astory that a cousin had told me a
few months before that night, thestory of Laurona the weep being women.

(03:28):
My cousin said that this happened avery long time ago, and that she
was named Maria. Maria was youngbut beautiful, and she had met a
man, a man who was rich. Maria was not rich, but they
got married anyway. She was happy. They had two kids, a boy
and a girl. But her husbandchanged and one day he didn't love her
anymore. He told Maria he wasleaving her. She was furious, but

(03:52):
nothing made her more mad than whenshe saw her husband with a younger woman.
When she saw that, she ranback home and took her kids to
the her None of them were seenagain. The townspeople figure that she had
drowned them because she was jealous. After that happened, once it got dark,
many in town began hearing cries, and some sets to have seen a

(04:13):
woman in a white dress appeared nearthe river. They said that she would
take kids, boys and girls. It didn't matter. She was looking for
her kids. At least that's howI remember the story. I figured my
cousin was exaggerating to try and scareme. But I heard it again,

(04:34):
crying. Was it closer? Icouldn't figure it out. I couldn't remember
at the time. What was itthat I heard. If the screams were
far La Rona was closed, orhad it been the other way around,
I didn't know. I wanted tothink that I had imagined the cries,

(04:56):
but there was again crying. Therewas a ditch right by our house,
and it sort of sounding like thescreams were coming from there. Still,
I wanted to convince myself that thiswas my imagination, but I heard the
dogs barking. This meant that theycould hear it too. This was real.
At this point, I was panicking, terrified, frozen on the couch,

(05:18):
I turned to look at the door. I'm still not sure why I
turned the door was to my left. I turned my head left, and
that's when I heard it, Awhisper right in my ear. Messious,
messious, my children. I ran. I was eleven when this happened.

(05:41):
Of course I ran. I ranstraight to my parents room. I woke
them up and I told them whatI heard. They told me it was
my imagination. Then it was thewind. They couldn't agree on what I
heard or what I saw, orwhether it was They couldn't agree on which
one, but they could agree thatit wasn't real. They could agree that
they didn't believe me. I knewwhat I heard. I knew it was

(06:05):
real. I didn't know what todo. I went back to the living
room, turned the lights on,turned the TV back on, sat back
down. Was it gonna fall backasleep? I didn't hear it again,
at least not that night. SpookyStories is written, edited and produced by
