Part 1: A two-part series why women over 40 drop the ball on holding their liquor. (Hint: it’s not our fault)
Cocktails are a thing, right? That is until they’re not. In this episode (Part 1 in a series on alcohol and middle-aged women), Cheryl Fenton and Danielle Murr discuss how, ever since entering a certain age bracket (hello, 40+), drinking alcohol - even an innocent glass of red wine - isn’t the party it used to be. The discussion begins with the holiday season’s booze-centric parties and the resulting 3am racing heart, acid reflux, and insomnia. Should Dry January be a year-long thing? Our bodies seem to think so. WTF did our tolerance go? We admit high school stories of drinking too much and fake IDs, today’s growing mocktail industry, and wind up talking Irish Goodbyes before
eventually taking one. Sláinte!
Stay tuned for second episode of the two-part series, when Cheryl and Danielle talk to a nutrition expert about why our bodies have become the worst drinking buddies ever, and what alcohol actually does to a peri- and post-menopausal aged woman.
To get into the (non-alcoholic) spirit of things, here are two of our favorite mocktail
recipes:
Wiski Sour
1.5 oz. Wiski
1 oz. of lemon juice
1 oz. maple syrup
Optional: orange wedge and Luxardo cherry for garnish
Add the Wiski, lemon juice and maple syrup to a cocktail shaker. Fill the shaker with ice and shake vigorously for about 15 seconds. Strain the mixture into your prepared glass filled with ice. Garnish with orange wedge and cherry.
Newgroni
1.5 oz. Bittersweet Aperitivo by Wilderton
1 oz. Verjus rouge
.75 oz. simple syrup
Pinch salt
Optional: orange twist
Stir all ingredients in mixing glass over ice for 15 seconds. Pour over a large ice cube in a double old fashioned glass. Garnish with orange twist.
