As we’re entering the climate change era, we are looking to science and technology for help in delaying climate change and averting a disaster.
New developments in technology are exciting and some are promising. There are also opportunists riding the wave of our anticipation. Many new enterprises are attempting to use climate change as a business opportunity and market their inventions as “sustainable” or “eco-friendly”, etc. making such claims with or without merit.
Let’s hold on to common sense amidst the excitement of newness.
Conservation and rehabilitation are not some of the options on the table: they are at the top of the priorities list. No new technology can replace a sustainable ecosystem. We depend on the natural environment in every way. There’s no technology as comprehensive as the ecosystem; no technology that could provide for all our needs; no technology to replace our natural environment. Conservation and rehabilitation preserve life on Earth.
There isn’t - at least so far - any technology that can capture carbon emissions as effectively and sustainably as the soil, forests, and oceans.
