tears in your eyes or laystepped after a tough day
because you just needed to move, these movies are for you.

(03:59):
They're not all blockbusters, but each one captures something
about what it means to be arunner.
So we've got biopics, grittythrillers, documentaries and
even some really big budgetHollywood productions.
All of these are perfect to getyou run-spired, to get out the
door for your run, or theperfect way to recover after
getting in those long run daymiles.
And listen, whether you're newto running or have hundreds of

(04:22):
miles behind you, there'ssomething powerful about seeing
your experience reflected on thebig screen or the little screen
at home.
I've compiled a list ofmust-watch running movies
narrative features,documentaries and wild ultra
running adventures.
Let's kick it off with thecategory Now.
While they're all inspirational, these are going to be

(04:42):
inspirational narrative features.
Well, they're all inspirational.
These are going to beinspirational narrative features
.
We could not have this listwithout kicking it off without
Chariots of Fire from 1981.
You can catch this on PrimeVideo or Apple TV.
This Academy Award winningmasterpiece tells the true story
of two British runners in the1924 Olympics.
It's fueled by faith, pride andpurpose.

(05:04):
It features one of the mosticonic scores in cinematic
history.
Next on this list, one of mypersonal favorites is McFarland
USA.
It came out in 2015, but youcan watch it on Disney Plus or
Prime Video.
It's a heartfelt story of apredominantly Latino high school
cross-country team thatovercomes socioeconomic

(05:26):
obstacles to become statechampions.
Based on real events, this isabsolutely a heartwarming story.
Also gives a whole new meaningof Hills Prince too.
Next on this list is St Ralphfrom 2004.
You can watch it on Apple TV orGoogle Play, and it's a teenage
boy believes that winning theBoston Marathon is the miracle

(05:48):
that will wake his mother from acoma.
It's a bit of an oddball, butthere is a lot of underdog magic
.
It's definitely a heartfeltfilm.
We're going to take it to theJericho Mile.
You can watch this one from1979 on YouTube or Apple TV.
From 1979 on YouTube or AppleTV.
Filmed in Folsom Prison, thisEmmy-winning film follows a
convict with Olympic-leveltalent training within prison

(06:13):
walls Personal best from 1982.
This was pretty interesting, actually, because it is maybe a
little ahead of its time.
It was groundbreaking for itsera, especially in its portrayal
of relationships and ambition.
It explores the physical andemotional toll of elite women's
track and field.
You should be able to catchthat one on Apple TV or Amazon

(06:33):
as well, my friend.
Now I think this particular oneis a.
It's probably top of the listfor every single female runner.

I still remember being in theactual theater sobbing because I
felt so seen and represented onthe big screen.
You can watch this on PrimeVideo.

(06:54):
And a woman reclaims her healthand life by training for a
marathon.
In this comedy drama inspiredby a true story Real talk.
When the actual Britney likedmy post that I said about how
great this movie was, I feltlike I had just won the lottery,
because you know, it's a littlethings.

(07:14):
It was super exciting.
Without Limits 1998, you canwatch on Apple TV or Google Play
is an intimate portrayal ofSteve Prefontaine and his
complex bond with his coach, bill Bowerman.
Now, of course, if you're goingto watch that, you got to watch
the actual Prefontaine with alittle bit of Jared Leto on the

(07:35):
side.
I mean, he is quite the hottie.
Still, you can watch on PrimeVideo or YouTube and it's a
grittier depiction of therunning legend's life, focusing
on his rise and, unfortunately, his untimely and tragic death.
You've probably heard me talkabout this next movie Run Fat
Boy Run from 2007.
A lovable loser hey, I didn'tcome up with these synopsis,

(07:57):
this is what they actuallydescribe it as.
But a lovable gentleman, I'llsay, trains for a marathon to
prove himself and win back hisex.
It's a fun, uplifting and alittle funny ride.
On to the next one on this list,my friend we're going to go to
On the Edge from 1986.

(08:18):
You can watch this on YouTube.
An aging runner, banned fromcompetition, enters an
unsanctioned race for redemption.

catch that one as well.
Now, another one on this listis the Loneliness of the Long
Distance Runner.
We all probably can feel thatat times when we're on our runs.
It's an older one, from 1962,but hey, it is a classic running

(08:40):
movie.
A young man in a British reformschool finds freedom in long
distance running.
Poetic, rebellious anddefinitely relatable.
On this list we have Marathonman from 1976, more thriller
than sports film, but the cheatscenes make this cult classic
for endurance fans.
Sports film, but the chasescenes make this cult classic

(09:02):
for endurance fans.
We've got Race from 2016.
It is a fantastic must-watchmovie.
You can find it on Netflix orApple TV.
It's the story of Jesse Owensand his defiant triumph at the
1936 Berlin Olympics.
Of course, the movie thatinspired me to sign up for my
very first marathon was Spiritof the Marathon from 2007.

(09:24):
Structured like a feature film, this documentary follows
everyday runners and eliterunners maybe a couple that
you'll recognize training forthe Chicago Marathon.
Now we're going to make it ourway to keeping that list going
with Spirit of the Marathon 2,inspiring, an educational

(09:44):
documentary, of course, from2013.
You can see it on Amazon.
It's a global perspective onthe marathon through the lens of
the marathon and Rome, ofcourse.
Anyone who has dabbled intosocial media with ultra running
likely knows all about theBarkley Marathons.

(10:05):
Well, this movie the BarkleyMarathons the Race that Eats Its
Young 2014, and again a littlebit about their race director
Laz has become a cult classic.
It reveals the bizarre, brutalworld of the Barclay Marathons.
Now there are several othermovies that have come up,
cropped up, or shorts that youcan find on YouTube about the
Barclay Marathons.

Definitely very inspiring.
Breaking 2 from 2017, where youcan watch this Disney Plus and
YouTube.
Nike's groundbreaking effort torun a sub two-hour marathon
starring none other thanKipchoge.
So, of course, next on the listis Kipchoge.

(10:49):
The last milestone from 2021.
You can watch this one on AppleTV.
It's a beautiful introspectivelook at the man behind the
greatest marathon ever run.
He just has a reallywonderfully beautiful
perspective on life and running,so I think that it's a must
watch for sure.
On this list is Free to Run from2016.

(11:10):
You can see it on Prime Video.

across the globe.
Friends, just to kind of datemyself, when Netflix first came
out and you had to have like aDVD subscription where they
would mail it to you for youyoungins you may not even know

(11:55):
this existed.
You would pop it in and thenyou'd mail it back.
This was one of the ones that Ireally enjoyed having a little
look-see at.
So Boston, the documentary from2017.
I also remember going to seethis at the movie theater and
again just crying.
It's an on-prime video now,though, on Apple TV, and it's a

(12:18):
comprehensive history of theworld's oldest marathon Run for
your Life 2008.
We're going to watch it.
Youtube love this Really reallyhighly recommend this
particular documentary.
It's the story of Fred LeBeau, founder of the NYC Marathon, new
York Roadrunners and hislasting legacy Finding Traction

(12:39):
also a fantastic must-watch,from 2014.
You can watch this on Tubi, youtube, amazon.
It follows ultra runner NikkiKimball's attempt to set the
speed record on Vermont's LongTrail, checking out 100 Meters
from 2016.
Now you can find this onNetflix.
It's based on the true story ofa man diagnosed with MS who
trains for Ironman Triathlon.

(13:01):
We're going to keep thatinspiration going with a mile an
hour from 2018.
One man runs one mile everyhour for 24 hours, completing
projects in between.
It's a little wholesome, it's ashort, it's joyful, it's genius
, it's a great one to catch, just to kind of give you some
different insights andperspectives.

(13:21):
Keeping this list going wasHuman Race from 2019.

Now this one you can watch onESPN Plus, looking at ultra
runners, exploitation of theTerra, humera culture.
So it's a little.
This one gives kind of food forthought, a little bit of some

(14:07):
pondering here and there.
The Unknown Runner from 2014,where to watch on YouTube?
It's an inside look at howKenya produces so many elite
marathoners, one of my personalfavorites because it has so much
beautiful redemption and Ithink when we come to running we
feel that connection toredemption in so many ways where
we rewrite our story, a littleshout out to that main character

(14:30):
Miles, a little energy of kindof what we're doing, rewriting
our narrative.
But Skid Row Marathon from 2017, you can see it on Amazon.
A judge, a criminal judgetrains a group from LA's Skid
Row Marathon from 2017.

It's truly, it's just sobeautiful.
Run While you Can.
From 2023.
Now this one's still making therounds.

(14:53):
It may be a little bit harderto find.
You may need to search a littlebit more, but it talks about
Kyle Peasy, born with cerebralpalsy and is pushed through
endurance races by his brother,brent.
You'll learn more about theirfoundation and all of the great
work they do, so definitelycheck that one out as well.

his record-breaking high schoolcross-country team, my friends,

soul of a city.
Now, real talk, when you gosomewhere new or you're

(16:16):
vacationing, or you're maybeeven trying to explore your own
neighborhood.
Have you not found the best wayto really get to the heart and
soul pun intended again of thearea is to run it.
It just feels completelydifferent.
So this is exactly what youwill uncover in this particular

(16:37):
short that I think you willabsolutely enjoy.
Just one step from 2017.
You're going to explore why werun, blending science,
psychology and personal stories.
Find that on Prime Video, ofcourse.
Now this next one isn'tspecifically running, but come
on, we're going to go ahead andgive it a little honorable

(16:58):
mention at.
It's the list rising from theashes from 2012.
You can see this on Amazon, though it's focused on cycling.
It's about a doctor withRwandan athletes overcoming
genocide, and it resonates withany endurance athlete.
I mean, us runners are going tosay that we are the best
endurance athletes.
But let's be honest, all theway around, however move or

(17:19):
groove, these endurance eventsreally do shape us, so it's a
great inspiring film as well.
Now, we've already touched onquite a bit of ultra and trail
and adventure running focus, butthis next portion of the list
is just about that.
So where dreams go to die 2018.
I told you guys, there's lotsout there about the Barkley
Marathons, and this one inparticular on YouTube is about

(17:40):

physical discomfort and pain.

(18:24):
You can see this on Netflix.

list without peeking into thefinisher, with Jasmine Paris, of
course, the first woman tofinish the Barkley Marathons.
This film explores herthree-year attempt, featuring

(18:45):
interviews with other Barkleylegends.
Of course, like the racedirector Laz, courtney DeWalter
and Amelia Boone, you should beable to find it on YouTube, but
if you can't keep looking, myfriend, it's a must watch for
sure.
Which brings us to Made to beBroken from 2017.
It's something you could findalso on YouTube, produced by Red

(19:08):
Bull TV Ultra runner, carlMeltzer.
Chases the Appalachian orAppalachian.
Which one do you pronounce it?
I've heard it pronounced acouple of different ways.
How do you pronounce it?
Just out of curiosity, butAppalachian trail F K T, which
stands for fastest known timeSpoiler.
It's not just about speed.
It's definitely going to beinspiring Alone through Iran, a

is a bit humbling.
Keeping this going with Run theLine 2024, where to watch?

(20:33):
It's an independent release anda digital screening, but you
