Speaker 1 (00:00):
What is up?
Faith and Failures community.
So we are just days away fromthe new year, so a lot of people
right now are getting those gymmemberships that we'll never
actually use.
We're starting to eat right andwe're claiming that we're going
to stick to it this time around.
But I want to talk to you alittle bit about maybe a part of
(00:25):
the new year that maybe youhave not thought about, and that
would be a spiritual assessment, a spiritual examination going
into this new year.
Like what does that look likefor you?
Like what have you allowed tomanipulate 2024?
And, in all honesty, what areyou going to allow to continue
(00:49):
to manipulate?
Or are you going to say youknow what?
It's not going to control meanymore?
You know what that person isnot going to control me anymore?
So stick around, because we'regoing to talk about some serious
things.
Last week was a holy God andthis week we're going to talk
about how we are called to beholy people.
(01:10):

You can also find it All right.
So we're going to dive intosome scripture and I want you to
look on the screen with me.
If you want, take your phoneand screenshot, or if you're on
(01:56):
your computer, whatever you gotto do, second Corinthians, write
it down.
Second Corinthians, 5, 16, 16through 21.
It's a little bit meaty herewith quite a bit of scripture,
but I believe that's what we'recalled to do to dive into
scripture.
So we're going to do that heretoday, starting in verse 16 in 2
Corinthians.
It says so we have not stoppedevaluating others from a human
(02:19):
point of view.
So we have stopped evaluatingothers from a human point of
view.
At one time we thought ofChrist merely from a human point
of view.
At one time we thought ofChrist merely from a human point
of view.
How differently we know him now.
So it's saying there was abefore and now there's an after.
We used to look at him one way,and now we see him a different
way.
How differently we know him now.
(02:39):
This means that anyone whobelongs to Christ has become a
new person.
The old life has gone, a newlife has begun, and all of this
is a gift from God, who broughtus back to himself through
Christ, and God has given usthis task of reconciling people
to him.
So Christ laid down his lifefor us, and now it is our jobs
(03:04):
as believers to then begin toalso do that.
Try to reconcile that same inother people, spark that
interest in other people offinding truth, the real truth,
not my truth, your truth or allwhatever truth they got going on
, but the truth, the one truthfrom the one true God.
For God has sent Christ, sent, for God was in Christ,
(03:26):
reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people's
sins against them, and he gaveus this wonderful message of
reconciliation.
So we hold on.
I got reconciliation.
So we are Christ's ambassadors.
(03:46):
God is making his appealthrough us.
We speak for Christ when weplead, come back to God, for God
made Christ, who never sin, hisson, to be the one and done
sacrifice that there never hasto be another sacrifice again.
(04:11):
There must be a life ofrepentance but, like the old
covenant, required blood on thealtar.
Jesus' blood is eternal andlasting to be able to reconcile
anybody in any state, at anypoint.
All they have to do is say yesto Jesus and make Him Lord of
their life and confess withtheir mouth that Jesus Christ is
(04:32):
the one true Son of God, whichis why Muslim people will never
go to heaven.
They will not admit that JesusChrist was the Messiah.
Traditional Jews.
They do not believe JesusChrist was the Messiah.
Traditional Jews.
They do not believe JesusChrist was the Messiah.
That's not my rules, that's theWord of God.
They have to believe in JesusChrist as the Messiah that laid
(04:54):
His life down 21.
For God made Christ, who neversinned, to be the offering for
our sins.
Now there's nowhere in biblicaltext where it says that Mary
never sinned.
Okay, jesus literally had halfbrothers.
(05:16):
Where did those brothers comefrom?
Mary?
So for certain sections ofreligious beliefs that she is
somehow holy, she is not.
She was a vessel, just like allof us are vessels to be used by
God however he sees fit.
That was her part to play, andso when people put her on a
(05:37):
pedestal, that has made an idolout of something that I believe
grieves Jesus' heart, thatpeople would turn his mother
into an idol Verse 21,.
Let's read it, for God has madeChrist, who never sinned, to be
the offering for our sins, thatwe could be made right with God
(05:59):
through Christ, not throughMary, not through a ritual, not
through the way we dress, notthrough how we pray, what
prayers we pray If we go to apriest, if we say these things,
all these things that seem to becopy and pasted on some very
traditional and around the worldthings are not actual New
(06:24):
Testament biblical beliefs.
They are made up and they areman-made.
So I want to walk you throughthis and as we walk through this
, I want you to understand thatGod.
I didn't switch that for youjust a second ago.
I do apologize, I forgot I hadit going.
(06:45):
I split it up for you.
But God is holy and so herequires His people to be holy.
So we're going to look at whatthat actually means when we say
to be holy.
So we're going to build on lastweek of talking about God, how
he was holy, and this week isgoing to be and starting of the
(07:05):
new year is going to be talkingabout how we must be as
believers and followers of JesusChrist, that we are also called
to a holy life.
Now, legalistic people try tomesh these two together.
Legalistic, which is like youhave to do a certain thing with
your hair.
You got to not do that.
All of a sudden, there a bunchof lists and it's exactly the
same way as the Pharisees, which, in their day, it was the
(07:28):
religious law, it was the waythey were taught, they were
doing it right, but they missedthe part of relationship inside.
Now, that being said, if someoneis dressing a certain way,
doing a certain thing, and thatis their conviction, and they
are living a holy life, not acertain thing, and that is their
conviction.
And they are living a holy life, not from that because their
(07:49):
works do not get them intoheaven, but out of that.
They have prayed, they havefasted, they have understood,
not because just how they wereraised, but they are truly
convicted that that's what Godis requiring of them to maybe
live a more humble life, tomaybe live a certain way.
Hey, all glory to God and letyour life be a reflection of who
he is and his glory and majestythrough a way of living,
(08:12):
because Jesus did point this outin the Pharisees.
He did say do what they'redoing, because they are doing it
right, they understand the law, they understand how to partake
and do what they're supposed todo, to say the right things.
To quote scripture they knewscripture very well, but it was
beyond that that Jesus wastrying to relay to those who
(08:33):
were listening to him teach.
Is that?
Yes, that is a good thing, butthat is not the thing that is a
good practice for you to havethat is good for your life.
It will structure you, it willhelp you remain mentally,
physically and emotionally, Ithink, in a very clear place.
But just as in the book of 2Corinthians we have where the
(08:57):
people of God took gifts thatwere good and they made them
into spiritual gifts that weregood.
They made them into somethingthat would birth things of the
flesh and sin got in the camp ofthe church and somebody was
sleeping with theirmother-in-law or their stepmom
or whatever it was, and peoplein the church were just like,
hey, that's cool, you do you boo, and that's not how God has
(09:20):
called us to live.
He's called us to live a holylife.
So let me look and see if Ihave the next.
Yeah, ephesians chapter four.
So I want you to look at this, look over in Ephesians chapter
four.
Okay, ephesians chapter fourcalls us to step away, throw off
your old sinful nature and yourformer way of life, which is
(09:45):
corrupted by lust and deception.
Now this chapter, this verse 22right here, calls us to step
away from our sinful nature andput on a new, god-given nature,
a transformation that reflectsthe holiness of our Father.
(10:05):
Our journey as believers isn'tabout receiving, just about
receiving, forgiveness.
God calls us to live a life oftransformation where we can
become more like Him everysingle day.
It should be.
This is why it angers me so much, and I'm just going to I'm not
trying to throw people under thebus, but if you're going to put
it in public, then you kind ofyou're asking for it.
(10:26):
I can't stand when someone onTikTok or Instagram or or
Facebook, or Twitty, or TwittyTwitter formerly known as
Twitter, now it's X they.
They like oh, I just want to, Ijust want to read my scripture
today, but then they have like aselfie picture of themselves,
like I am.
So now, if you do this, don'tthink I'm calling you out, I'm
(10:47):
talking like a very specific.
They have in their little bioscriptures and everything.
I'm a Jesus lover, and thenthey dress like a hooker.
I'm sorry those two things canexist in the same thing, because
now I don't know where they arein their walk of faith.
But I'm telling you this whenyou come to Christ, the things
that you used to do, how youused to act, the way you used to
(11:08):
respond, the very thoughts youused to have, should now be
different and begin to betransformed.
But here's the thing.
Here's what we do in theAmerican culture, at least that
I can speak to, is that we loveto put Christ on with everything
we are being and just keepeverything else too.
(11:28):
There's never an exclusion, there's never a separation, and
so what we have is a bunch ofwhitewashed tombs that their
Instagram looks pretty.
They got highlighted scriptures, they got whatever little
scriptures on their little biothing.
They're making little TikToks.
I just felt today that Jesussaid and it's like you're not
doing it for you, I mean for God, you're doing it for you, and
(11:51):
it's very obvious that it's aself-absorbed, self-selfish
instead of selfless Like.
Here's the thing If we're doingsomething out of the goodness
of our heart, the kindness ofour heart.
If we're going and servingpeople, we shouldn't have to
have a camera crew or recordevery single moment of it.
It should be more of a privatething, because the Lord says
that he will uplift the thingswe do in private and it seems
(12:16):
like all we want to do is getthings on social media to show
that we're doing something.
Now, if I'm looking up a church,I want to see stuff going on, I
want to see things happening, Iwant to see the messages, I
want to see the outreach they'redoing.
But what I'm saying is you canbe doing these things and being
recorded, having photos taken, and it'd be perfect.
(12:38):
But if the opposite and thewrong ambition on this type of
stuff and now you only do itwhen you're being recorded, you
only will do it when you'repretending to be, your pride has
taken over where thisservanthood spot should have
(13:03):
been.
So that's what we have to bemindful of.
So, bottom line, if you dresslike a hooker, don't say you
love Jesus because you don'tknow him.
And when I say that, I'm nottalking about those who just got
saved, I'm talking about thosewho are like they're reading
scripture every day and theydon't feel convicted at all
(13:24):
about showing themselves.
That should be only for theirhusbands.
I mean, you too, you know youcan show your stuff like it that
is very private stuff that theculture has become so sexualized
that probably very good-heartedpeople that actually love God
don't even realize that they aresexualizing the word of God by
(13:47):
dressing the way they do andthen talking about God.
So now they look likehypocrites and there's no weight
or substance to their claim ofJesus because they look just
like the world.
They act just like the world.
There is no separation and Godhas called us to be a separate,
a called apart people.
So the being set apart is acontinual and it is an
(14:13):
intentional and it is anintentional process.
Ephesians 4 tells us thatputting off our old sinful
nature and putting on our newnature is how we respond to
God's holiness.
So we'll look at it one moretime.
Throw off the old sinful natureand your former way of life, so
(14:36):
what you were should no longerbe.
Now some of these things happenovernight.
I've heard of people where theyjust like their addictions were
gone, like that.
My story was not that way.
I actually got a little betterand then went back to a couple
of things and then got a littlebetter.
It was a slow, gradual,sometimes a flip-flop back and
(14:57):
forth, but every time Iflip-flopped back and it was
like I got closer to God andeventually the things of the
past that I really didn't want, that my heart really wanted God,
they eventually faded.
Now that doesn't mean I stilldon't struggle, like one of my
biggest things that I strugglewith.
I mean I used to be on meth allthe time and that's called a
(15:17):
sex drug for a reason, and sopornography is one of my things
because that's all I did when Iwas on drugs and so it's
constantly.
That's still the remnant ofsinful nature.
The devil knows that that's whatI the lust of the eyes, the
lust of the flesh, that's whatmen gravitate towards.
So that's what he tries to useto get us separated from God.
(15:39):
He's trying over and over againto replay out the initial
separation of Adam and Eve whenhe got them to separate
themselves from God.
He tries to do that to us everysingle day because he is
jealous of us, of how close wecan be with God, because he can
never be saved and yet we can dowhatever, and God still loves
(16:00):
us that he sent his son to diefor us.
Like there, what he did thereis no atonement for.
And yet God provides atonementfor us.
And so it angers him, it makeshim mad, it makes him want to
see us fall, want to see us tripup, because he can't have what
we can have.
He can never have thatrelationship between him and God
again, and so we must, asbelievers, there should be
(16:25):
action behind our salvation.
There should be action behindsanctification.
If you don't know whatsanctification is, it's an
ongoing process, every singleday, of intentionally making a
decision that I am going tofollow Christ, in spite of what
is around me, in spite of how Ifeel, in spite of if it's good,
in spite of if it's bad, like itdoes not matter.
I am going to say yes to Godevery single day.
(16:48):
That is sanctification.
So throw off your old sinfulnature and your former way of
lust or your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and
deception, by lust and deception.
So put on your new nature inChrist.
Put on your new nature inChrist.
(17:12):
So Ephesians again, chapterfour, same chapter 23 and 24.
Instead, let the spirit renewyour thoughts and attitudes.
Now, why does it say veryspecifically here the spirit,
because I don't know if you'vetried to do things yourself
before.
I have several times andseveral years and I can make a
(17:32):
mess of everything because Idon't have the capacity to pull
me out.
So let me, let me give you avery real, a real physical
example for a second.
We're talking about gettingyourself to be better.
If you or I fell into a hole, apit, and we latched onto the
(17:53):
side and we were just likehanging, like just by the edge.
You know, you see them on themovies.
They're always hanging off thebuildings Somehow.
Their fingers are holding themup.
It seems like 30 hours, butthey're going like this and
they're hanging and you'rehanging All right.
Now imagine how could you comeoff the roof and pull yourself
up, like how could you be on theother side like a person would
(18:15):
and pull yourself up?
It is nearly it could.
You could actually pullyourself up, you could do it.
But most majority of people, intheir physical strength, do not
actually have that amount ofstrength in their upper body to
(18:37):
pull themselves up and get backup on a ledge.
Now think about that what Ijust said Nine times out of 10,
a person does not actually havethe strength to pull themselves
out of a pit.
Let's read this again.
Instead, let the Spirit renewyour thoughts and attitudes.
So if we're going to be renewedin Christ and we're going to
live a holy life, we have toallow the Holy Spirit to do the
(19:00):
work, because if not, we willtry, and most of the time, and
almost all of the time, until wereach a state of strength and
maturity in Christ, we will endup failing and falling back into
our old ways, and so that's whyit's incredibly important to
understand that you, in yourstrength, stop trying to control
(19:21):
it.
Stop trying to be the personlike.
Be strong enough.
That's your pride.
Allow God to do the work thatonly God can do, because if
you've ever served the Lord andyou probably had some situations
that were probably not fun, situations that were hard,
distracting and dismantling toyou as a person, just who you
(19:43):
thought you were, who youthought was around you I've had
to let God and the Holy Spirithandle things and keep my cool
and keep my mouth shut, and youknow what happens.
And keep my cool and keep mymouth shut and you know what
happens when God handles it andGod takes care of it.
It always works out the bestway possible.
But when Steven gets on boardand I'm trying to do it my way
(20:06):
and I'm trying to make thingshappen, when, when I'm
overstepping my bounds ofauthority of of if God is
authority of my life, then Ineed to let God be the authority
and I need to sit on the backseat for a little bit.
So in this, if I don't reservethat spot for God, I will end up
messing it up.
But I have to be willing to siton the sidelines and let God do
(20:30):
what only God can do and letthe Holy Spirit do what only the
Holy Spirit can do.
So put on your new nature, okay, your new nature by the Spirit,
created to be like God, trulyrighteous and holy.
We are called to allow theSpirit to renew our thoughts and
our attitudes.
This will produce out of usgood attributes and good
(20:51):
character and all the fruit ofthe spirit that we actually
desire in our lives.
But we end up doing it thewrong way and getting the wrong
fruit, and then we get upset.
But God has given us a newnature through Christ.
This isn't just a set of rules.
If you don't know Christ.
(21:12):
Coming to Christ is not a set ofrules.
It's actually a new way ofbeing free.
It's a radical transformationof the inside out.
We are renewed by the HolySpirit, who helps change our
desires, our thoughts and ourattitudes.
Goodness, if we could just getsome people in the church to
allow their attitudes to bechanged, imagine who would
(21:34):
actually want to come to Christ.
That is crazy.
Being created to be like Godmeans we are designed to reflect
His righteousness and Hisholiness.
When we embrace this new nature, our lives will reflect
qualities like love, kindness, patience, humility and integrity
and other fruit of the Spirit.
Integrity is not in there, butjust letting you know Things
(21:55):
like that that we really wouldwant to have in our lives.
That develops and manufacturesgood character.
To put the new nature, to puton this new nature, we need to
surrender daily to God's Spirit, asking Him to change our hearts
and our minds, to be willingand to be open for Him to do
(22:17):
that.
We must be intentional in ourrelationship with God, allowing
His Word to shape us.
Let's look at Ephesians 4,25-33.
It's quite a bit of scripture, but living out our new identity,
let's give some understandingto what we've been talking about
(22:38):
.
Let's get some context fromEphesians, chapter four again.
So stop telling lies.
Let us tell our neighbors thetruth, for we are all part of
the same body.
So when you come to Christ, there is a connection between
each other.
The Bible even says that thespirit of God living in us bears
witness with the spirit of Godliving in other people.
(23:01):
So the spirit recognizes thespirit, so it makes it where
it's not confusing and somebodydoes something that's out of
line or out of the spiritualalignment and gets in the flesh.
We know because the spiritwithin us checks us and checks
them.
So stop telling lies.
Let us tell our neighbors thetruth, for we are all part to
(23:24):
the same body, verse 26.
And don't sin by letting angercontrol you.
Man, where you at, you mightnot be emotional, but anger is
an emotion.
Don't let the sun go down whileyou are still angry, for anger
gives a foothold to the devil.
If you are a thief, guess what?
(23:46):
Quit stealing Shocker.
Instead, use your hands forgood hard work and then give
generously to others in need.
So it's talking about areversal effect of when the Holy
Spirit comes, lives inside ofyou and changes you.
Now what you used to do.
(24:06):
That was wrong, and fleshlyit's taking those same
instruments.
So this person is a thief.
That means they're good atconcealing, they're good at
pickpocketing, pickpocketing,pickpocketing, pickpocketing.
They pick them pockets.
You know what I'm saying.
And they can do things, butthey also want everything for
themselves.
Well, it's saying that you, once you come to Christ, you
(24:29):
begin to reverse that.
Now you want to give toeverybody else, you want to
protect, you want to quit lying, you want to quit stealing.
Instead, use your hands thatonce was used for stealing, now
use them for the good of thekingdom.
Hands that once was used forstealing, now use them for the
good of the kingdom Verse 29.
Here we go, church people, don'tuse foul or abusive language.
Let everything you say be goodand helpful, so that your words
(24:50):
will be an encouragement tothose who hear them.
And do not bring sorrow toGod's Holy Spirit by the way you
live.
Remember he has identified youas his own.
But, holy Spirit, by the wayyou live, remember he has
identified you as his own, guaranteeing you, guaranteeing
that you will be saved on theday of redemption.
He's talking to Christians here.
Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, slander
and, like I just said he'stalking to Christians here.
(25:12):
All types of evil behavior, verse 32.
Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one
another, just as God, throughChrist, has forgiven you.
Just as Christ has forgiven you.
Now.
This outlines specific behaviorsthat come from our new nature,
(25:34):
coming to Christ.
Paul talks about things likespeaking truthfully, controlling
your anger, being generous andspeaking words that builds
others up.
Let's break this down a littlebit more.
So let's go to Ephesians 4.29.
Don't use foul or abusivelanguage.
Let everything you say be goodand helpful, so that your words
(25:55):
will be an encouragement tothose who hear them.
Take a screenshot of this, putit on a sticky note, put it on
your window, whatever you got todo, write it down.
When we put on our new nature,it affects every area of our
lives how we speak, how we treatothers, how we respond to hurt,
how we deal with temptation.
(26:17):
Our new nature reflects a holygod showing others that we are
truly set apart, that we aretruly set apart, the power of
the holy spirit intransformation.
Let's look ephesians, chapter 4, verse 30, and do not bring
sorrow to god's Holy Spirit bythe way you live.
(26:38):
Remember he has identified youas His own, guaranteeing that
you will be saved on the day ofredemption.
I thank God that he hasidentified me as His own, but
how he identifies us is that weare identified by Him.
You understand what I'm saying.
(26:58):
Identified by him.
You understand what I'm saying.
God has given us his Holy Spiritto help us live out this new
nature.
We are sealed by the HolySpirit, marked as God's own
people.
The Holy Spirit guides, heconvicts and he empowers us to
live a life that honors God.
When we walk in this new nature, the Holy Spirit within us is
(27:22):
pleased, but when we slip backinto our old patterns, we bring
sorrow to the Holy Spirit.
Living our new identity asGod's children is an act of
gratitude for all he has done.
So encouragement for the church.
(27:44):
Look at Ephesians 4.32.
Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one
another, just as God, throughChrist, has given you.
This verse is a beautifulpicture of our new nature.
We can love, we can forgive, wecan show kindness because he
has received, because we havereceived these things from God.
(28:06):
As we embrace our new nature,we reflect God's love to a
broken world.
And as we close this out, Iwant you to remember this that
the call to holiness is notabout perfection.
As we draw near to a holy God,we become more like him.
(28:29):
We should become more like himbecause we are seeking to be
closer to him, and the newnature becomes evident in how we
live.
Living a certain way, doinggood things, does not produce
salvation or holiness, butsalvation and desiring to live
holy produces these things outof the abundance of our heart,
because now our heart belongs toGod.
(28:49):
Our heart of stone has become aheart of flesh and now it pumps
, it lives again.
The new nature becomes evidentin how we live, speak and love.
God has given us everything weneed, through the Holy Spirit,
to live out this identity, thisnew identity in Christ.
So I want you to ask yourself,as we come into this new year in
(29:12):
just a few days have you trulygiven your whole heart, the way
you think, what you watch, whatyou see, what you hear, what you
listen to, what you speak, thethings you say?
Have you given everything over, truly given everything over to
(29:33):
God?
Your past hurts, maybe yourpresent hurts, maybe you're in
the middle of things right nowand you don't see a way out, and
all you feel is fear, anger, hate, and you don't know what to
do.
First of all, cling to His Word.
The Word is the foundation forwhere and how you're going to
(29:55):
heal, are going to heal.
Second is, find a goodcommunity of people who believe
what the word says.
Doesn't have to be a specificdenomination, but they
wholeheartedly, from cover tocover, believe what the word
says and they don't add to itand try to make up something.
And I'm not going to go intothat.
That's another podcast episode.
(30:16):
What I'm saying is this we arecalled to be set apart.
I don't want Jesus to ever lookat me, like he did the
Pharisees, and say you're just awhitewashed tomb.
You're doing everything righton the outside.
You're dressing right, You'reacting right, you're talking
right, you're doing all thecharity work, you're giving
(30:37):
generously, you're paying yourtithes, you're doing all the
things right that the Bible saysyou should do a well-rounded,
good character, loving husband, man, all these things, father,
but then inside I'm a wreck, I'ma wretched soul.
I want God to look at me oneday and say well done, my good
(31:03):
and faithful servant.
And so that is my harsh desire, and I hope that some of this
from something today has birthedsomething in you that you will
also want to at least begin tosearch and that it becomes your
heart's desire, because that'sthe kind of relationship God
(31:25):
desires to have with us.
He is holy, so we, if we arehis children, also must be holy.
Love you, praying for you, andI hope you have an amazing new
year.
