Speaker 1 (00:14):
Music.
There came a sound from heavenas of a rushing, mighty wind.
It sounded like this powerfulhurricane, this wind.
It was just like it was just anin rush.
(00:40):
And they're looking, they don'tknow where this wind is coming
from, like, oftentimes, when Godbegins to move by his spirit,
we especially if we're not usedto it, and what's happening?
Sometimes people, I've seenpeople run when God starts to
move or whatever.
But here these people, these120, were expecting and they
(01:04):
were waiting.
And God moves still the sameway today.
When he gives us a promise, when he gives us a word, he exp.
Hello, my name's Don Carpenter.
I have been in the ministry forwell over 60 years, bible
(01:29):
college president for many years.
I travel internationally, speakat conferences and churches,
and God has blessed me with goodhealth and life.
But what I would like to sharewith you today are some truths
that have helped shape my life, have helped me to stay steadfast
(01:50):
and steady, helped me to beeffective, and these are things
I want to share with you today, because God wants you to be
equipped.
And to be equipped, we need tobe Holy Spirit filled.
Key thought Holy Spirit filled.
We may think, well, why is thatnecessary?
(02:16):
Or can't I just do it on my own, or Well?
We're followers of Jesus and inthe book of Acts, the first
chapter, this is recorded whenJesus was assembled with his
disciples, he said to them, hesaid he commanded them and this
(02:39):
is in verse four that theyshould not depart from Jerusalem
, but wait for the promise ofthe Father, which saith he you
have heard of me For John, trulybaptized with water, but you
shall be baptized with the HolyGhost not many days hence.
(02:59):
And he also says this regardingthe Holy Spirit.
He says but you shall receivepower.
What kind of power?
This is spiritual power.
You're going to receive powerand be effective and be
effective.
After that, the Holy Ghost hascome upon you and you shall be
(03:22):
witnesses unto me, both inJerusalem, all Judea, samaria,
and onto the other, most part ofthe earth.
And when he had spoken thesethings, while they beheld, he
was taken up and a cloudreceived him out of their sight.
Now, this was the very lastthing that Jesus talked about,
(03:43):
that he taught.
It was so critical, soimportant.
And we're thinking, well, whywould Jesus speak with that?
The very last thing Like, why?
I myself believe that, god, when we are filled with the Holy
(04:08):
Spirit.
God equips us with gifts, manygifts, but I'm thinking of
spiritual gifts.
That's recorded in 1Corinthians 12, things like
faith, discerning, a spirit, word of wisdom, healing, gives
(04:29):
this on to men.
And so what happened was thedisciples said let's meet
together because there was afeast coming up.
It was called the Feast ofPentecost.
And they decided to meettogether in this room.
Bible refers to it as an upperroom in Acts, chapter 2, and it
(04:54):
says that they were all accordedin this room.
They didn't know what wasreally going to, how it was
going to happen.
All that they knew was thatJesus said you need to be filled
with the Holy Ghost, the HolySpirit, and that was nearly
(05:16):
2,000 years ago.
It's the same thing for today.
Nothing has changed in thisrespect.
We believers still need to befilled with the Holy Ghost.
So off they go, they gather upinto this room, according to
(05:40):
Acts, chapter 2.
They're there for 10 days, 120people, and suddenly I like how
it says that in verse 2 of Acts2, suddenly he expects us to
wait.
And while we are waiting, weare expecting God to make it
(06:03):
possible.
So here they are, they'regathered in the upper room, and
I just wanted to picture this.
It says that when this noisecame, they began to speak with
other tongues.
What happened was there waslike tongues of fire came down
(06:29):
and sat over each person in thisroom.
This was a manifestation ofGod's power and, by the way, the
manifestations of God's powerhappen very often today and it
says that this tongue of firesat upon each of them.
(06:52):
Now, I don't know if they feltheat or I don't know the
physical feeling that they mayhave had, but I do know this.
Something happened and as theSpirit of God came upon them,
(07:14):
the Bible said they spoke withtongues.
Okay, see, people will say howdo you know when you're filled
with the Holy Spirit, like some?
There's all kinds of teachingsand people talk and say things.
Some say, well, you're, you'refilled, you get the Holy Ghost
(07:37):
and you're filled when you'resaved.
But I believe and I teach thatit's a something which we wait
for.
It's like a second experience,if you will.
It's something that, when ithappens to you, there's no doubt
.
But what happened was the signthat we had was that they spoke
(08:01):
in tongues.
Now, tongues is controversial.
People say, well, who needstongues and what good does that
do?
And some people say, well, youknow all kinds of things they
say, but did you know thattongues is also a gift, of one
(08:21):
of the nine gifts of the HolySpirit?
So I always find it interestingwhen people think, well, I
don't like this gift, I thinkthat I like just the gift of
healing and maybe I'll take thegift of faith and possibly
(08:42):
discerning of spirits.
Like it's interesting howpeople say, well, this is what
we're going to get, but theBible tells us that God gives it
to us, those gifts to us, as hewills and without trying to get
into this too much here, somepeople say, well, tongues, I
only speak in tongues if I havea gift.
(09:02):
That is, when we use tongues toGod speaks to the church when
we're gathered.
It's a gift that we use in thebody, but when we are seeking
God for the Holy Spirit, tonguesis a signal.
It's a sign, it's evidence thatthere's an overflow of the Holy
(09:28):
Spirit coming into our lives.
I thought it was quiteinteresting when we look into
this in Acts, chapter 10, andI'm turning there right now and
in Acts, chapter 10, verse 46,.
(09:51):
Here's something.
Verse 46, it says this was theywere out preaching, peter was,
and the Holy Spirit fell uponthem.
They're not in the upper room, okay, they're in another section
of the region.
And it says in verse 46, forthey heard them speak with
(10:17):
tongues and magnified God.
And what happens is in verse 45, the Holy Spirit was poured out
and people gathered, heard this.
So Peter saying he's reportingback to the elders in Jerusalem
and he says can anybody forbidwater?
(10:38):
That they should not bebaptized, which have received
the Holy Ghost as well, as weSee, it was so important and
everybody's saying, yeah, yeah, let's bring them into the body,
let's just see.
(10:59):
We want to keep moving forward.
God's doing great things andthat's the important thing.
When you grow.
This program is called Equipthe Saints and you will find
that your Christian walk whenyou first come into the kingdom.
It's you know.
People think, well, I got itall at once.
(11:21):
You have now been born andyou're brought in and you're
going to grow and I'm going tohelp you with this.
They heard them speak withtongues and that was
confirmation to Peter that theyhad received the Holy Ghost.
So why change the criteria?
(11:42):
Why change it?
Well, some people say, well, Idon't know if I want to speak
like that and I don't know ifit's necessary.
That's what God ordained.
And the problem that we can runinto if we start picking and
(12:04):
choosing how we're going to doit, like what we're going to
accept and what we're going toreject.
To me, to me to think that I amgoing to reject any portion of
the Word of God.
I would consider thatproblematic.
(12:26):
I would consider that, as abeliever, if I didn't accept
what God wants me to have, there's a reason why God wants
us to have the Holy Ghost.
We've got a great commission.
The great commission is yes,we're going to take the gospel
(12:48):
to the entire world, and thegreat commission is that we're
going to minister the kingdom ofGod.
There's going to be signsfollowing.
Many great and wonderful thingshappen when we're out there
ministering in our lives.
Now, that was the second time.
(13:09):
There's another report.
If we would look into Acts, chapter 19 and verse 6,
something is happening here.
Paul and Apollos were atCorinth and while they're here,
(13:35):
I'm just reading here out of areading here out of verse 6,
acts 19,.
When Paul had laid his handsupon them, the Holy Ghost came
upon them and they spake withtongues in prophesy.
It doesn't say they spake withtongues or prophesy, and do you
(13:58):
notice something here?
So how do we get the HolySpirit to wait and pray in our
rooms or seek it somewhere?
I teach and I believe that thebaptism of the Holy Spirit would
come through the laying on ofhands of the ministers, the
(14:19):
preachers, god's ministers, theApostles, prophets, evangelists,
pastors, teachers.
And when they lay their handson you, you're desirous, you're
hungry for the Holy Spirit andyou want the Holy Ghost.
You want to have the gifts, youwant to move with the power,
(14:43):
and I would be seeking out, Iwould be seeking a minister who
would pray for me.
I would have them lay theirhands upon me, upon my head or
shoulders, wherever they do it.
I'll take your hand, lay theirhands on you and I would ask
(15:10):
that God would give me the HolySpirit and I would be satisfied
that, I would be convinced thatI got the real thing.
Now I have found in my lifethat when you ask God for this
(15:31):
and you get it, it's not goingto be something different, it's
going to be the Holy Spirit.
And Can I take?
I'm going to take you to onemore verse here.
I'm going to take you to overinto the book of Hebrews.
I want to read you somethinghere in Hebrews, chapter 4, that
(15:52):
I think is quite critical andcrucial in Anything that we're
going to receive from or we'regoing to Carry out God's command
.
This is very important here.
You know what it says, verseone he says let us therefore
(16:13):
fear lest a promise being leftus of Entering into his rest and
I take that rest as coming andbeing at peace and centering,
settling into what I'm convincedGod wants.
Any of you should seem to comeshort of it.
(16:34):
In other words, you looked forit, you didn't get it.
You try it a couple of times, you quit or you just don't
bother anymore.
Everything it did, whatever youneed from God, he said, for on
to us was the gospel preached,as well as on to them.
But the word preached, thankGod, for preachers.
(16:58):
The word preach did not profitthem, didn't do them any good,
not the reason it didn't do themany good, not being mixed with
faith and them that heard it.
And when you hear the word andyou get excited about it and
(17:22):
you're thinking, yeah, that'sfor me, that's what I want, this
is what I, this is what I feelis lacking in my life, for
example, being filled with HolySpirit.
Mix it with faith.
In other words, have faith thatit's for you, have faith is
going to happen to you, havefaith that you're going to be a
(17:45):
wonderful carrier of the Spirit.
The baptism of the Holy Spirit.
I Would like to minister to youand pray for you right now.
Father, in the name of Jesus, thank you for this precious one
(18:07):
that's listened and with ustoday.
I pray that the word that hasbeen ministered, that it will be
accepted, that In one accord,my listener and I, and I'm
believing that you're going tominister strength and to these
people right now, in Jesus name,be filled with the Spirit.
(18:31):
Amen.
Thank you for listening.
Glad you tuned in and we'llcatch you next time.
