Speaker 1 (00:05):
Welcome to Faithfully
Living, the Podcast, where we
learn how to live for Christ inour daily lives.
I am Dwan, your host, and Iwould like to invite you on a
journey with me to explore andlearn how to be a faithful
follower of Christ.
Hi everyone, welcome toFaithfully Living, the Podcast,
(00:43):
where we strive to encourage youto live for Christ faithfully
by offering guidance on studyingthe Bible, how to understand
the Bible better and how toremain faithful to historic
Christianity in a contemporarysociety.
Let us therefore yieldourselves and bow to the
authority of the Holy Scripture, which can neither err or
deceive.
St Augustine, you know, as apeople, the concept of authority
can be beneficial in our lives.
So authority brings or providesa framework for establishing
(01:08):
order and stability withinsocieties, organizations and
relationships, and authority canset boundaries, rules and
expectations to help preventchaos and confusions.
It could also facilitatedecision making, providing
(01:30):
guidance or, you know, a sourceof expertise and leadership, and
it can help individuals andgroups make informed choices and
be decisive in situations andknowing which direction to go.
Another thing that when I thinkabout authority, it establishes
(01:51):
accountability.
You're assigned certainprojects, you're holding people
accountable for their actions, decisions, their performance in
certain tasks that they have todo each day.
And then authority can alsoplay a role in resolving
(02:13):
conflicts and disputes.
It can offer kind of likeguidance or framework for
resolving conflicts ordisagreements, reinforcing
agreements, and then hopefully, can restore harmony to
relationships of of people andcommunity.
(02:35):
So in the same way, the Bibleprovides authority for our lives
(03:01):
.
So you know, as believers, um,it's our guide and the bible
should be our authority, becausegod has set forth his truth
about life, how we're all tolive godly.
So I guess one thing you wantto think about is how does your
(03:21):
belief about truth measurealongside God's Like?
God is the ultimate authority.
When we bow to scripture, weare bowing to God's authority,
john Stout.
So what does it mean forscripture to be the authority?
As always, let's look at adefinition of authority from
(03:46):
Wayne Grudem's SystematicTheology.
He says the authority ofScripture means that all the
words in Scripture are God'swords In such a way.
To disbelieve or disobey anyword of Scripture is to
disbelieve or disobey God.
Scripture is to disbelieve ordisobey God.
(04:07):
So the authority of Scripturedepends on the power and
supremacy of its author, whichis God.
So Scripture is God breathed.
We've heard the verse in 2Timothy 3, 16, that says all
Scripture is breathed out by Godand is profitable for teaching,
for proof, for correction andfor training in righteousness.
(04:28):
So scripture is God speaking,so it's the final say for all
matters, whether we want to ordo submit to it or not to or do
(04:49):
submit to it or not.
So when we look for where theauthority of the Bible comes
from, you know it's determinedby scripture itself.
So the authority of the Bibleholds true because it is true.
The scriptures record, you know, fulfillment of prophecy from.
You know, beginning fromgenesis all the way to the end,
in revelation.
For example, you know, around500 years before king cyrus of
(05:12):
persia to live, god called himby name through the prophet
isaiah.
Long before jesus was born in amanger, the old testament
prophets spoke of his earthlyministry in more than 300
prophecies and christ fulfilledthem.
All these prophecies, alongwith many others in the bible,
(05:35):
testify of the trustworthinessand the right to be
authoritative in our lives.
So the Old Testament foretoldthat Jesus was coming and that
he would save his people and theworld from their sins.
So when we think about theBible, don't forget that
(05:58):
scripture is a unified story andthat God directed each of the
authors of the Bible by hisspirit.
You know there are more thanthere were 440 men that wrote
the message withoutcontradiction or error.
And you know God worked throughthe author's personalities,
(06:19):
their experiences, their writingstyles, but the word was his
own and not theirs.
The authority of scripture is inthe Bible itself.
It's divine, aw Pink.
So I guess you have to thinkabout who is really in control.
(06:43):
So we know, or should know, that God has supreme authority
and power above all.
And God is the author of theBible, so his word carries
authority.
Scripture is God speaking, sohe has a final authority on all
(07:04):
matters.
God is true, so his word istrue.
So remember I said that Godinspired every author of the
Bible, over 40, to write downhis words.
And they wrote it exactly whatGod wanted them to say, without
error or contradiction.
In 2 Peter 1, 22-21 says Knowfirst of all that no prophecy of
(07:29):
scripture comes from one's owninterpretation, for no prophecy
ever produced by the will of men.
But men spoke from God as theyare carried about by the Holy
Spirit.
So God moved through the HolySpirit to have men write his
holy word.
So, as a follower of Christ, god has given.
(07:53):
God, has and can give you thefaith to believe in him If
you're willing to surrender yourlife to Christ.
So when you surrender to Godand Christ, you should surrender
to his authority in your life.
So if you trust God, that meansyou should trust his word also.
(08:15):
So our Christian faith stands orfalls upon the foundation of
the scriptures and we can't pickand choose what to believe in
in the Bible.
If we don't believe certainparts or obey certain
commandments, you know wedisbelieve and disobey God.
(08:36):
So you know, we often say thatwe want God to be in control of
our lives and you know, yet alot of times we don't obey or
believe his word.
So the doctrine of scripture'sauthority reminds us that God's
word stands above all earthlypowers, because God is God.
(08:57):
If we don't trust thescriptures to be authoritative,
you know, how can we say that wetrust God?
We owe to the scriptures thesame reverence which we owe to
God, because it has proceededfrom him alone and has nothing
belonging to men, to man.
(09:19):
Mix with it, john Calvin.
So why is the authority ofscriptures so important to our
Christian faith?
As a follower of Christ, weshould choose to believe what
God says in his word If yousurrender your life to Christ,
(09:40):
then God is the authority inyour life and the Bible is God's
word.
So if you trust God, you shouldalso trust his word.
So remember, like I said, ourChristian faith stands or falls
upon the foundation of scripture, and this foundation is that of
the living god who has spokento humanity, and his word has
(10:02):
been recorded in the bible.
We can't pick and choose whatwe we want to believe in the
bible.
You know, if we don't believecertain parts of it or we don't
obey certain commandments, wedisbelieve and disobey God.
We should do our best to obeythings God has commanded us.
This is how we show him, honorand glorify him.
(10:28):
Ultimately, the scriptures areauthoritative because God is the
author.
Scriptures are authoritativebecause God is the author.
He's the divine creator andruler of everything, and so he's
the ultimate authority.
The Bible is authoritative ineverything of which it speaks.
Moreover, it speaks ofeverything, francis Shaver,
(11:00):
shaver.
Okay, so to recap and providefurther insight, the authority
of scripture finds its roots inthe belief that god has spoken
to humanity through the writtenword and, as I read earlier,
second timothy 316, this is all.
Scripture is breath, breatheout and is useful for teaching,
rebuking, correcting andtraining in righteousness.
So the divine inspiration of theBible is as unparalleled
(11:23):
significance to guide us asleaders in all matters of faith,
doctrine and in conduct, how welive in this life.
So the authority of scriptureprovides, or can provide,
provide us a solid foundation onwhich we build our faith.
So the world, you know itshifts, you know conflicting
(11:47):
voices, but we can be assuredthat the unchanging truth, the
god's word, serves as a reliableanchor for us as believers.
And then it offers us wisdomand guidance where we experience
trials in our life.
We also have to believe thatthe authority of scripture
(12:08):
established boundaries for ourbeliefs and our practices.
It is the ultimate standard bywhich all you know, the
teachings we have and traditionsare measured by, to ensure the
truthfulness of the core tenetsof our faith handed down through
(12:30):
generations, and we can seethis throughout church history.
And then also the authority ofscripture.
It nourishes and deepens ourreverence for God and his word.
So when we approach the biblewith humility and openness, we
(12:50):
we encounter the living god whospeaks to his word, and we could
hope and pray that god's wordtransforms our hearts and minds
in the process.
So, you know, in culture, youknow, often questions or rejects
the idea of absolute truth, butscripture, it, remains a light
(13:13):
of hope and a gives us certaintyas christians in our world
today.
It guides us, it's kind of likea road map on our journey
called life and it gives us aglimpse of the sovereignty and
lovingness of god as he hasrevealed himself to us through
(13:36):
his word.
You know, as we navigate through, you know, all of the trials,
the complexities of living inthis fallen world.
We can hold fast to theauthority of scripture and allow
the truth of God's word and itsauthority to, you know, guide
(13:57):
our path and to shape how weneed to live in God's perfect
world for our lives.
Psalms 119.05 says your word isa lamp unto my feet and a light
unto my path.
So hopefully this provides youwith some encouragement to know
and receive the authority ofGod's word in in your life.
(14:21):
