Speaker 1 (00:04):
All right, everyone, welcome back to Fandom From Afar
.
We are a couple weeks into thebasketball season and there's
been so much happening already.
I thought I'd do a quickepisode today just to share some
of my Nuggets thoughts.
Around the league alreadythere's been a ton of injuries,
which I never like.

(00:25):
It's always more fun when theteams can play each other at
full strength.
The Nuggets have not beenimmune to the injury bug Jamal
Murray, aaron Gordon alreadymissing some time with some big
injuries.
But there's other teams thatare dealing with it too.
There's other teams that aredealing with it too.
Just this weekend, kevin Durant, john Morant, zion Williamson

(00:54):
all went out, just big injuriesall over the place.
So it is going to be aninteresting season just to see
who can kind of survive, who canbe healthy at the right time
and come out on top.
So I like the way the Nuggetsare playing, even with the
injuries.
And so for today I want to gointo my top surprises of the
season.

(01:14):
I say surprises because I knowyou guys look at me as someone
who knows everything and isnever wrong about anything when
it comes to basketball.
So I'll just say surprisesbecause it's not that I was
wrong.
It's just different than Iexpected.
So we'll go from leastsurprising to most surprising

(01:36):
and I think we'll be able totalk about almost all the
players on the Nuggetsthroughout these five surprises.
So, starting out with the leastsurprising aspect of the season
so far, jokic is really good.
He may have gotten even bettersince the last couple years when

(01:57):
he won three out of four MVPs.
He's just dominating in everyaspect.
This year he was alreadyconsidered by many the best
player in the world and now he'ssomehow better.
He's come out this year andfound his three-point shot again
.
He's killing it from thethree-point line.

(02:21):
He's not shooting a ton of them, but he did have one game where
he hit seven and many othergames where he's hit multiple
three-pointers and in typicalJokic fashion he just kind of
makes it look so easy, likehe'll like stand out there and
be like oh, you're not going tocover me out here, okay, and
then he'll just drain it andit's just so fun.
But the way he's kind ofconducting the offense we'll go

(02:44):
into it more later with some ofthe new players, some of the
young players he's averaging atriple-double.
In the games that he doesn'tget a triple-double, he's
scoring 40 points.
He's just dominating in any wayyou can think of.
And it was such doom and gloomaround Nuggets fans or even in

(03:07):
the basketball media afterNuggets started out 0-2.
And even in those games theysaid Jokic is playing great.
He just doesn't have the teamaround him.
But it almost seems like theteam kind of adjusted very
quickly and now Jokic is just incomplete control of the game.
He's doing everything and theplayers around him have kind of

(03:29):
started to play a little bitdifferently and it's really
working.
So, like I said after that 0-2start, the Nuggets are 6-1 in
their most recent games.
I'm recording this on a Sunday,so we have a big game against
the Mavericks tonight in games.
I'm recording this on a Sunday,so we have a big game against
the Mavericks tonight.
But Jokic is just in completecontrol.

(03:52):
And it's funny listening topodcasts because I think even
Nuggets fans agreed like there'sno way that he can win another
MVP.
He's won three out of the lastfour.
Just the way it works.
People get tired of voting forthe same players.
They like the new storyline, they want to find the next guy.
And it's not that they'retearing down Jokic.
They agree he is the bestplayer, but they're always

(04:14):
looking for the next story.
But Jokic is just making it sohard to ignore what he's doing
and the numbers he's putting up.
It's going to be reallyinteresting to see how long can
people not consider him for MVPjust because of what he's doing
and just acknowledge that, hey, this is just truly special and

(04:39):
we'll find the next guy nextyear because Jokic is by far the
most valuable player.
The next surprising aspect ofthe season is a bit of a bummer.
I was excited about Dario Saricand what he was going to bring
to the team, and that's not tosay that he can't still turn it

(05:01):
around and be a valuable part ofthe bench.
But it has been rough to startthe season.
He looks so much slower than hedid when he was.
Obviously when he was withPhiladelphia.
He was a young guy back then, but when he was with Phoenix or
even kind of when he was firstwith Golden State, he looked so

(05:24):
much more athletic back then andI know he's been battling
injuries kind of later in hiscareer.
But he looks so slow right nowand kind of lost, just not
really knowing how to fit inwith our bench.
Now I will say.
Part of that is the Nuggetshave adjusted since those first
couple of games and one of theadjustments was not playing

(05:47):
Sarich anymore, and so it'll beinteresting to see, as he's
watched from the bench, if hecan kind of figure out what can
his role be and how can he addto what the bench is doing.
But I will say he just hedoesn't look good right now.
But it's a long season.
Hopefully he'll have his time.

(06:08):
But that has definitely been asurprise.
He was one of our big freeagent signings and he has been a
huge negative so far.
But, like I said, there's stillplenty of time.
The next surprise is Mr RussellWestbrook.
You know I was excited abouthim.

(06:28):
I was hoping that he would doexactly what he has been doing.
He's brought his passion, hisenergy, leadership and it's been
rubbing off on all the guys.
Almost in every interview oneof the players brings up Russell
Westbrook and just how muchhe's meant to the team Westbrook

(06:51):
and just how much he's meant tothe team.
And I think it's just reallyobvious that all the players
kind of knew what was missingfrom the team last year and
whether it was just complacencyafter winning the championship
and and uh guys just didn't havethat same fire as the year
before or just kind of thepersonnel that was in the locker
room.
Russell Westbrook has reallyturned that around, and just the

(07:12):
fact that every player keepsbringing it up I think it's had
a huge impact.
And so I know that he's oldhe's in his 17th season but just
watching him has been so fun.
He literally is running as hardas he can at all times and

(07:33):
sometimes that's a good thing,sometimes it's a bad thing.
He has a hard time slowinghimself down, enough to hit some
layups, but that's okay, Ithink just the young guys that
he plays with on the bench, evensome of the veterans.
Jamal Murray came back from hisinjury in the last game against
the Heat and I really thinkthat he's been watching

(07:56):
Westbrook and how the guys haveresponded to him, and Murray was
playing hard for the first timein a long time.
Like Jamal looked like he had alittle bit more pep in his step
and whether it's that he'sthreatened by Westbrook or that
kind of takes what Westbrook isdoing and adds it to his game,

(08:32):
because when Murray's trying andplaying hard, he is absolutely
amazing and we just didn't seethat last year.
So Russell Westbrook alreadypaying dividends and, within him
, being a surprise.
I think the biggest thing thathas been a surprise about him is
his defense.
A surprise.
I think the biggest thing thathas been a surprise about him is

(08:53):
his defense.
He's been a lockdown defenderand just being such an athlete
and he's, he's a big guy.
I think he's like six, four,six, five.
He is shutting some of theseguards down.
He's rebounding, it's just.
It's a pleasant surprise.
But, man, if he can keep thisup, it's a huge addition to the
bench.
Just because you throwWestbrook out there playing
defense like that with PeytonWatson or even Christian Brown

(09:17):
playing with the defense, uh,the the bench, um, aaron Gordon
plays with the bench quite a bitand then all of a sudden we got
just super athletes that arerunning up and down the court
and shutting you down.
That's a huge advantage for thesecond unit wall, yoka Tress,
and so it's been awesome.
I'm sure there's been other fanbases that have seen flashes of

(09:40):
this and have talked themselvesinto it.
So I hope it keeps going.
But overall, what Westbrook hasprovided so far has just been
above and beyond what we couldhave expected.
My second most surprising aspectof the season is Coach Malone.

(10:03):
Now, like I said, we startedout 0-2 in those games.
Actually, in the first gameCoach Malone was trying to do
his same rotation that he didlast year, where he is just
convinced that Jamal Murray canlead the bench and can hold it
down while Jokic is resting.
And in the first game it provedto not work again and,

(10:28):
surprisingly, in a wonderful wayCoach Malone adjusted the
rotation right away in thatsecond game and since then he's
kind of found a really funrotation.
Now some of it has been kind offorced upon him by the injury
to Jamal Murray and Aaron Gordon, and so he's been playing

(10:54):
Peyton Watson at power forward, peyton Watson a lot with the
bench or with the startersJulian Strother, hunter Tyson
All these guys are kind ofgetting an extra shot and doing
well with it, and Malone isfinding just the right rhythm
with all these guys, even thoughthey haven't really played much
before.

(11:14):
He's been flexible, he's beennoticing what's working and then
sticking with it.
Even to the point in my lastsurprise I was saying Russell
Westbrook has played amazing, but Coach Moen has had the right
feel for the game and he closeswith the young guys.
Westbrook will come in, maybefor a defensive possession in
the last couple minutes, butotherwise Strother's been out

(11:37):
there, or Peyton Watson with thehuge block to end the game
against Oklahoma City the othernight.
He just kind of has the rightfeel right now of which guys are
playing and how they fittogether and it's really working
out well.
And I just have to give it upto coach Malone because he has
been willing to be flexible thisyear and not just try and force

(12:00):
, uh, some bad rotations thatjust don't work.
So coach Malone has definitelybeen a pleasant surprise.
And my number one surprise forthis season in such an amazing
way is Christian Brown.
Everyone was so sad to seeCasey P go.
He will always be an all-timenugget for helping us bring the

(12:22):
first championship to Denver andit was kind of worrisome that
we lost him in his shooting andhis defense.
But Christian Brown has steppedup and, dare I say, been an
upgrade.
Like he has been so amazing.
All of a sudden Christian Browncan shoot threes Like it's no
problem at all and his defensehas been just amazing.

(12:46):
That's always been there.
But his cutting has just beensuch a weapon as well, and that
kind of goes for a lot of theplayers Peyton Watson, russell
Westbrook, even Michael PorterJr They've really taken to
cutting hard off ball when Jokichas the ball and that's why
Jokic is getting so many assiststhis year, because these guys

(13:09):
are cutting hard and it's kindof just creating a really cool
offense for the Nuggets whereteams don't know what to do
because they want to double andtriple team Jokic.
But the other guys on the teamhave become so good at cutting
at the exact right time that theNuggets are getting so many
easy baskets just from beingaware of what's happening to

(13:32):
Jokic and cutting.
And, like I said, christianBrown, he's making the open
shots this year.
Peyton Watson he's strugglinghis first few games back but he
is starting to really turn it onnow.
I think it took him a littlebit of time because he missed
the whole preseason with aninjury, but now Peyton's really

(13:52):
looking good and Michael PorterJr is starting to really hit
shots too.
And so the fact that defensesdon't know what to do with Jokic
and Jokic is just finding theopen guy at all times and
Christian Brown's been a hugepart of that.
It seems like most teams gameplan coming into the season was
just to double team off ofChristian Brown because he can't

(14:15):
hit a shot, but this year he'shitting them on the regular and
he is hitting them even with aguy in his face.
He just has supreme confidencethis year and it's been so fun
and obviously the highlight sofar of the season was him
dunking on Gobert and justscreaming in his face and it was
just the best.
I loved it in so many ways.

(14:37):
But Christian Brown has beensuch an amazing surprise and the
fact that the plan was to letKCP go because the team had
faith in Christian Brown andhe's rewarding him right now
with this level of play.
And again, I think the guysseem to really feed off of each

(15:00):
other this year and part of thatis Christian Brown's uh energy
and attitude and I think him andPeyton Watson are great combo,
and then you add RussellWestbrook into it it's like
three guys that will just runthrough a wall, I think into it,
it's like three guys that willjust run through a wall, I think
kind of energize the rest ofthe team.
And so five big surprises, uh,so far this season, only one of

(15:21):
them being bad.
Um nuggets, after a horrendousstart, are looking pretty,
pretty good, and so it's just agood reminder that the
basketball season is really longand so, as bad as it seemed
that first week the Nuggets wereone of the top stories on all

(15:41):
the basketball podcasts Ilistened to, they were just.
Everyone was kind of predictingtheir downfall already and
saying that time had passed themby and that they committed to
the wrong guys.
And just like any giantsweeping statement you could
think of in a bad way, peoplewere saying it about the Nuggets
and how quickly things turnaround.
It's just a good reminder that,as a basketball fan, that's why

(16:05):
it's fun to watch, not just towatch during the playoffs, but
to watch the whole season.
You really get to see the upsand downs and kind of get to
enjoy the ride and so far it's,it's been fun and the nuggets
are back.
