Speaker 1 (00:03):
All right, everyone,
welcome back to Fandom From Afar
and stop me if you've heardthis before.
But it has been a wild stretchfor the Nuggets Up and down, up
and down, starting with Jokic's30-20-20 game.
First time in NBA historyanyone has ever done that.
We were riding high thinking,oh my goodness, this is the
(00:28):
start of something amazing.
So then, of course, the nextgame we lose to the Thunder.
No shame in that.
Thunder are amazing.
It was on the road, but thevery next day we beat the
Thunder.
Obviously, the loss got a lotmore coverage because it
happened on Sunday a national TVgame but that's okay.
(00:50):
Nuggets can fly under the radarand the Thunder win was a great
team win.
I was impressed with everyone, not just the starters, but the
bench played well.
Jokic obviously was amazing andit was a good win.
So it felt like the Nuggetswere building something.
Wednesday they got destroyed bythe Timberwolves.
(01:12):
The Timberwolves it almostlooks like it's a varsity team
versus a JV team, and thevarsity team just has that
internal confidence that theyjust know they're going to win.
It's just a matter of how theywant to win.
They can be bullies, they canjust be more skilled.
T-wolves decided to do all ofthat.
(01:35):
They could not have beat usmore and it's really
disheartening.
The T-Wolves seem to have ournumber.
I think the T-Wolves are kindof in Jamal Murray's head.
After the playoffs last yearand then all the regular season
games this year.
It's not great.
We should probably try to avoidthem in the playoffs.
(01:55):
There was one play inparticular that it really just
stuck out to me.
Jamal Murray was coming arounda screen and was wide open for a
three-pointer.
Jamal Murray was coming outaround a screen and was wide
open for a three-pointer and Iswear when he went up to shoot
the ball he was looking sidewaysjust because he was so scared
that Anthony Edwards was goingto block his shot, just like
he's done in the past.
(02:16):
And I just think the T-wolvesare so in his head and they are
impressive.
They have our number.
I'm not going to make anyexcuses.
They are just beating us downright now and it's tough.
So of course, after a tough loss, the Nuggets followed up with a
victory, but it was a victorythat kind of felt like a loss.
(02:37):
The Lakers sat most of theirstarters and were kind of giving
us the game, yet it took alast-second Jamal Murray
three-pointer to win.
So although we did technicallywin, it didn't feel great.
We couldn't be satisfied with awin where it didn't feel great.
So we had to lose to the worstteam in the NBA, the Washington
(02:58):
Wizards.
The Nuggets have now lost twiceto the Wizards and it's just
another low point for ourbeloved Nuggets that we just
never know what they're going todo night to night.
It just shows they can lose toanyone or they can beat anyone,
and that was again shown againstthe Golden State Warriors.
(03:21):
We did what the Lakers did andwe sat most of our starters
Choosing for the rest is morevaluable than the win.
We said, hey, warriors, we'renot going to try, here you go.
But Aaron Gordon, russellWestbrook, they had other ideas.
They somehow lead the bench mobto an improbable victory in
(03:47):
golden state, who's been one ofthe hottest teams in the nba
since they got jimmy butler.
I don't know what can you say?
The nuggets just do what theydo.
You never know if they're goingto win or lose.
It does not matter who they'replaying.
They can beat the best and theycan lose to the worst.
So strap in, folks.
(04:08):
I'm sure the last month of theseason will be no different.
I want to do something in honorof my family.
My Colorado family inspired methis past week.
They continue our familytradition of going to spring
training, kind of hanging outwith the Rockies down there in
Arizona, and really it's justgood family time to get out of
(04:30):
the cold weather and kind of theunofficial start to spring.
So they all went down toArizona, saw the Rockies, who
have a bunch of good youngplayers.
I don't want to get too excited, but they seem like they got
something building over there.
So today's podcast I want to doa bracket on my favorite
(04:53):
sporting events of the year.
Now, spring training inspiredthis.
The bracket is also one of myfavorite sporting events with
March Madness.
So I'm going to combine the twoand we're going to do a bracket
style battle of the favoritesporting events of the year for
me and we will see who comes outvictorious.
(05:17):
So I do have to say this was alittle tougher than I thought it
was going to be, only because Ileft out some pretty big events
.
Well, let me tell you what Ileft out and then I'll explain
why.
So I left out the Olympics.
I actually love the Olympics, but every four years and it just
(05:38):
takes a couple of weeks, likefor everything to happen.
So one of my rules for thisbracket is going to be it needs
to either be a single day orperhaps over a weekend, so the
Olympics being every four yearsineligible.
Now I also, because of this rule, left out the college football
(06:00):
playoffs, the NHL playoffs howabout the baseball playoffs and
NFL playoffs?
And let's not forget the NBAplayoffs.
So this may seem kind ofridiculous, but I have to follow
my own rules.
The NBA playoffs obviously aremy absolute favorite sporting
event of the year.
(06:20):
Basketball is just so much funto watch when all the players
are trying their absolutehardest and it's kind of do or
die every game.
So it broke my heart to leavethese playoffs out, but they're
spread out too long.
I couldn't include them in mybracket.
The same goes for NFL, baseball, hockey, even college football.
(06:43):
It is amazing as a sports fanto watch the playoffs and watch
everything.
Kind of step up a level.
But it just didn't fit in thebracket because I have to follow
my rules.
Now, if I were to build thisbracket and ask 12-year-old
Brian which events I'd like toinclude, there would have been
some that 12-year-old Brianwould have included that I did
(07:06):
not today, and those eventsinclude NBA All-Star Weekend.
I used to love NBA All-StarWeekend, the dunk contest, the
three-point contest, justwatching all the All-Stars play
together.
I grew up in the era where theAll-Star game play together.
I grew up in the era where theAll-Star game they tried a
(07:27):
little bit harder than they donow, which is zero, and the dunk
contest and three-point contestreally were a big event and the
stars participated and itreally was just a fun watch.
And it's really gone downhilllately and it's really more.
Now.
You kind of check out thehighlights the next day instead
of appointment viewing on thatSaturday night.
(07:50):
Another event that 12-year-oldBrian would have included that I
did not is the New Year's Daybowl games.
It used to be such a big dealif your college football team
got to play in a bowl on NewYear's Day.
There's obviously so many bowlgames now.
With the playoff system theyreally have added to the sport
(08:10):
in different ways, but the NewYear's Day tradition has kind of
gone away.
The NFL preseason will not bein my bracket.
12-year-old Brian used to loveit because it was like oh yes,
football is back and I would beexcited about preseason games
and getting to see the playersout on the field now and
everything, but I do not careabout preseason any longer.
(08:32):
It is one of those things whereI just hope that our real
players do not get hurt duringthe preseason.
So I almost hope that theydon't play.
And last 12-year-old Brianwould have said it should have
been a national holiday when thenewest version of Madden got
released.
That was a big deal in ourhousehold.
(08:53):
It's not in the bracket.
So what is in the bracket, youmay ask.
Well, let me tell you Our topseed on this Selection Sunday.
Well, it just makes sense.
It's the first weekend of MarchMadness.
It's one of my favorite eventsof the year.
There's so much that goes intoit that I love.
Kind of going back to theinspiration for this podcast, my
(09:16):
family has really been involvedand loved March Madness really
since I can remember, and so Ithink that's part of the reason
why I love it so much is it'skind of something that we did as
a family and just kind ofbecame a tradition and I've
passed that on to my kids nowand I just love the whole
spectacle of the first weekendwith all the games.
Now the top seed will be takingon the eight seed Masters
(09:41):
Sunday.
I don't watch very many golftournaments throughout the year
Uh, really, only two.
But for some reason the mastersjust seems important and it's
probably because I grew upwatching tiger and it almost
seemed larger than golf ofwatching him in his red sweater,
red shirt on a Sunday and justkind of dominating and kind of
(10:03):
being knowing that you're seeingone of the greatest to ever do
it dominate his sport.
So I kind of got hooked inthere and it just always seems
like it's a a big deal to watchup masters Sunday and, um, I
still appreciate it.
It just it's, it's almost likea nice kickoff to spring.
Now the four or five matchup isinteresting in this versus
(10:27):
spring training.
Now, obviously the Super Bowlis the peak of the NFL season
and the spring training is justthe very beginning of baseball
season.
I had a tough time ranking these.
I did give the Super Bowl thefour seed and spring training
the five seed, spring training, like I said, it was a family
(10:48):
tradition really since I was 12years old and we got the
Colorado Rockies to come toDenver and we started going to
spring training.
And if you listen to myinterview with my sister, krista
.
Baseball is a big part of ourlife and we just we loved going
down to spring training andgetting out of the cold weather
and hanging out with the playersand just like falling in love
(11:11):
with baseball.
The Super Bowl is right upthere with it, so that's why I
have them so evenly ranked.
Being a Bronco fan, they'vegone to many Super Bowls and
lost many Super Bowls, but wehave had the opportunity to win
a few as well.
There's really nothing betterwhen your team wins the Super
Bowl it's pretty exciting.
(11:31):
And even when the Broncosaren't playing, the Super Bowl
is such a big national eventthat it had to be ranked high
Down at the bottom of thebracket we have the three-seed
baseball opening day.
So, as I mentioned, baseball hasbeen a big part of my family.
I've kind of drifted away fromit a little bit, but I still get
(11:52):
excited for opening day.
Now, being a Rockies fan, theexcitement doesn't last too much
longer after opening daybecause we immediately go to
last place and stay there forthe rest of the season.
But if you've never had thechance to do baseball opening
day in downtown Denver, it's sofun.
The whole city kind of shutsdown and it's one giant party
(12:15):
and it's usually beautifulweather and, like I said, hope
springs eternal at the beginningof the season, so everybody's
in a good mood and it's just.
It's an awesome, awesome event.
So that's why it gets the threeseed Baseball opening day.
We'll take on the sixth seed, nba on Christmas day.
Now, christmas is my favoriteholiday and basketball is my
(12:37):
favorite sport, so this had tobe on here.
I love how basketball has kindof made Christmas its own
holiday and the games areusually the best teams.
The only reason this isn'tranked higher is the Nuggets
have a bad habit of gettingabsolutely destroyed on
Christmas day, so that brings alittle bit of a sour note to it,
(12:57):
but it's still pretty fun thatwe're considered one of the best
teams and get to play on thatday.
Now the last matchup is theseventh seed.
I mentioned earlier that I onlywatch two golf tournaments per
year and one of them is thePlayers' Championship, which is
our seventh seed.
This is a local tournament forme, living in Jacksonville, and
(13:20):
we try and take the family, ifwe can, to the tournament.
It's usually just a nice familyday to enjoy the weather, walk
around the golf course.
It of course has that iconic17th hole.
That's fun to watch players, soit's really a good time.
Even if you're not a big golffan, it is fun just to kind of
have a big event like that herein Jacksonville.
And the two seed.
(13:41):
Our last entrant into thebracket is football on
Thanksgiving.
So this is obviously theoriginal holiday, plus sports
equals so much fun andThanksgiving's amazing.
Just eating food and watchingfootball, hanging out with
family, you really can't beat it.
(14:02):
So this one was a no-brainer toput in the bracket and it
earned its two seed.
As the matchups went along, wegot some interesting results.
In the 1-8 matchup, which wasthe first weekend of March
Madness versus the Masters, itreally wasn't that close.
I love March Madness and itadvanced easily.
(14:26):
We just had Selection Sundayand we're going to be filling
out the brackets with the familyhere tonight.
And then I of course asked forThursday and Friday off of work
so that I can go watch the gamesand I just love March Madness
the first weekend.
So so much.
Now in the 4-5 matchup, it wasvery close.
Like I said, the Super Bowl, youdetermine a champion.
Spring training it's a bunch ofdudes you've never heard of,
(14:49):
but the weather's really niceand it's fun to watch baseball.
So although I did go back andforth a little bit, I did have
to give it to the Super Bowl.
You're determining a championto be remembered for the rest of
history.
And as much as I love springtraining, sometimes you're
watching a fat catcher wearingnumber 97 that you'll never see
(15:09):
again In our bottom of ourbracket.
Number three six baseballopening day versus NBA on
Christmas.
Baseball opening day had thelead.
I thought for sure it was goingto advance, but I love
basketball so much I had toadvance NBA on Christmas day.
I know there's so much that'sspecial about opening day, but I
(15:34):
love basketball.
And in the last matchup, thePlayers' Championship versus
football on Thanksgiving again, players' Championship just
couldn't really hang.
I do love watching golf onSundays, but not as much as I
love watching football while I'min a coma from eating too much
turkey.
So our final four is set.
(15:54):
We have first weekend of MarchMadness versus the Super Bowl
and NBA on Christmas versusfootball on Thanksgiving.
Now, because I was not only theselection committee but I'm
also determining the results, you may think that there wasn't
too many nerves or excitementwhile I thought about the
(16:17):
results of this, but you'd beunderestimating how dorky I
truly am.
So in our first matchup, marchMadness versus the Super Bowl
one game versus so many games, one game versus so many games 60
minutes plus a whole lot offunny commercials, sometimes an
(16:45):
entertaining halftime act versusJim Nance, charles Barkley a
bunch of 18-year-old kids thatbecome legends I really thought
about this one and I had to giveit to March Madness.
I just love March Madness somuch.
My buddy and I we get togetherat a sports bar and just sit
there for 13, 14 hours lookingat our bets, filling out our
(17:07):
brackets, just talking aboutpast years and everything like
that.
It's just such a good time tohang out with friends and family
.
I love it so much.
And in the other Final Fourmatchup, nba on Christmas versus
Thanksgiving football Imentioned before I just love
basketball, but when it camedown to it, I think Thanksgiving
(17:30):
and football beat out Christmasand basketball just by the
slightest margin.
It has to be because it's beena tradition for longer.
I'm in my forties now and Idon't remember a Thanksgiving
where we didn't watch the Lionsor the Cowboys.
Or now they have the Sundaynight game and it makes it even
better.
So Thanksgiving takes the win.
(17:51):
So our final championshipmatchup is the first weekend of
March Madness versus football onThanksgiving.
You really can't go wrong.
It was a tough battle, but whattime of year is it?
It's March Madness time.
March Madness takes the victory.
It is the best sporting eventof the year.
If you plan ahead, take timeoff of work.
(18:11):
Best sporting event of the yearIf you plan ahead, take time
off of work, make sure yourfriends and family meet up with
you, eat some terrible food, beton games that you have no idea
about either team and you willhave a great time.
Thank you so much.
Enjoy March Madness.
