Speaker 1 (00:00):
And this is West Michigan's Morning News DA's Brett Bikita.
I'm Steve Kelly, and ladies and gentlemen, for the first
time this season, brought to you once again. My first
companies are football insider Tye Hallick. Good morning, brother man.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
July thirty one, and we are talking Detroit Lions football
and they're actually playing in the game tonight. What in
the world is going on?

Speaker 3 (00:27):
Summer's over, my friend, and here we go. But I
tell you what I'm excited.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
I was.

Speaker 3 (00:31):
You know, I went through that mode as a fan
where you're disappointed. And I say disappointed because, as you know, Ty,
you've got to be successful to have people want your
coordinators or want your players. And it's been a long
time since the Lions have been in that category, but
certainly are in the last few years. But two new coordinators,
and I'm excited to see even though it'd be Vanilla,
I get it what they bring to the table in

(00:54):
OC John Morton and new defensive coordinator Calvin Shepard. Right,
we've been founding them a little bit in training camp.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
Yeah, And I think Bland is correct, right, particularly for
one of four preseason games you have and it's the
Hall of Fame game. But to your point, I mean,
look at the next I don't know, six to eight
weeks going in. You know, from preseason into the season,
there's gonna be a lot of scrutiny on John Morton

(01:22):
on the offensive side, particularly because he has zero excuse.
He's got plenty of talent. They got some things to
figure out on the offensive line. There's some decent players.
There got a good draft pick in Ratite, which we
probably won't see tonight. But is that going to translate
the way that it has the last few years for

(01:42):
a very successful offense. Can he maintain that and maybe
even throw us a few curve balls and improve it.
So I think there's a lot of eyes, ears, etc.
All on John Morton, and I think he has a
very tough task, but at the same with the talent,
so long as he doesn't try to tweak too much,

(02:02):
he should be fine. Kelvin Shelferd, on the other hand,
I think has a better defense potentially than what was
had a year ago, and that's exciting to me too.
We still have some injuries on the defensive line with
guys that aren't going to get in until later. Terry
and Arnold. A lot of people are talking about him
on the defensive side of the ball. So I think

(02:22):
Kelvin's got some things to work with a little better
than perhaps we had a year ago. But it really
comes down to Brett in my mind. And we went
through this last year as the whole injury bug. Everybody's
had little knicks and dings, and defensive back linebackers d
lineman that we talked about a second ago, there's three
three of them that are probably not with us until September.

(02:45):
We got to make sure we get through a season
relatively healthy. You're going to have injuries, but man, they
were astronomical last year, and that can just kill a
good football team down the stretch and certainly hurt us
late having so many reserve type So hopefully we can
stay healthy for this particular year. So as much as
we're gonna watch schematically, I'm gonna watch, you know, to

(03:06):
make sure guys are blown tennis shoes left and right.

Speaker 3 (03:09):
Ty Hallick joined us, and you know when you were introduced,
Steve Kelly laid out your lineage Greenville High and then
Michigan State and then of course you know, three different
NFL teams great career. How do you feel this morning?
I'm so excited for a kid like Isaac de Slaw
who's going to kind of hopefully following your footsteps and
other greats that you know we've had in West Michigan,
but you've known this coaching here at Forest Hill Central Plain.

(03:32):
I mean, West Michigan has some outstanding high school football.
But to see what a kid like to Slaw has accomplished.
And I'm telling you, he's going to excite some people
in the Lion's uniform, isn't he you know?

Speaker 2 (03:42):
I think he is. I think he's a very talented player,
and it is super exciting when you're from, you know,
this area, and you have that opportunity. I mean, the
last thing in the world I thought I was going
to get drafted by the Lions. And when I got
that phone call, I mean, my parents and I were
so extremely excited and just playing my first preseason game.
It doesn't matter if it's the Hall of Fame game,

(04:04):
if you're on the road somewhere. The reality of it is,
it's a dream come true. It's exciting. He's one of
the couple of players and I'm most interested in tonight
along with Lovett to get out of Georgia. Those two
receivers will play key roles in this particular year, but
certainly got to be exciting for him and his family
to see him wearing the Hono Lulu blue and silver,

(04:25):
and it's definitely an honor and a privilege. And look
these days with them winning and everything else, it's ultimately exciting.
But let's see how these guys kind of come out
this year. Hopefully, you know, Dan Campbell, he's going to
be singing a tune and they're going to be right
along with him. But you know, as long as we
stay relatively injury free and get through these preseason games,
figure out kind of the couple of people that we're

(04:46):
going to need in more backup roles, just like the quarterbacks. Right,
we got two quarterbacks and Hooker and Allen that are
going to be battling it out. Those guys get set
and then have hopefully a very good season, be at
top of the division to get a chance to make
a run in the playoffs.
