Speaker 1 (00:00):
High school basketball fans. You know my passionate excitement when
it comes to it, boys or girls.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
We love it.

Speaker 1 (00:05):
With our Game of the Week coverature on ninety six
won the game. But I got to tell you about
an event that maybe you're not aware of that you
need to check out. And it's right around the corner.
It's called Queen of the Court, the twenty twenty five edition.
Its second year. It's Saturday, June seventh, between two and
six pm at Aquinas College right downtown. We're talking Skills Challenge,
three point contests in East versus West All Star game

(00:27):
with girls high school basketball seniors their last hurrah before
a lot of them go off and play college basketball.
And I found out about this event and I said,
I'm in and joining us right now is founder and
owner Kalise Jeffries. Hey, Kalise, how are you?

Speaker 2 (00:41):
Hey, Brett, I'm doing well. Thanks for having me on today.

Speaker 1 (00:44):
And one of the most passionate people when it comes
to girls high school basketball in the area that I
know that I've been involved with, and she helped me
out with LMCU with everything we did with our Baskets
for Kids for Kids food basket. Bobby Courtwright is a
volunteer now committee member and you were part of one
of the sponsors last You just got hooked with this event, right, Bobby, Yes.

Speaker 3 (01:02):
Yes, thank you for having us. We sponsored LMS sponsored
last year and I attended the event and when I
met Kayley's, I was just excited to help out. And
you know, I've seen some event start like this and
grow into something that ends up in a nice, big arena,
and I just said, I want to be part of
it if I.

Speaker 1 (01:22):
Can so kay Ley's, I know in talking to you
and Bobby, when you kind of talked to me about
this idea, it really spurred from something you got to
participate in right back when you were a high school
basketball player.

Speaker 2 (01:34):
Yeah. My first all star event in the high school
and only seniors only is called the Champions of Character
Game at Davenport University and it was a super cool
event to be a part of. It was pretty local,
focusing on players in West Michigan. And fast forward to
twenty twenty three, I believe it was like summerfall. I

(01:56):
was just in the car with my mom and my
sister and I was like, Hey, what if we did
an all star events statewide where we just did East
versus West and we made it a super cool event,
kind of how the NBA does their All Star weekend
and we went to work and it sparked.

Speaker 1 (02:11):
Then and it's very cool. I love it too. It's
very family friendly and affordable. Ten dollars general admission. Kids
five and under our free again. Saturday, June seventh, two
to six pm. It will be at Aquinas College, beautiful
venue downtown and Bobby, I know one of the things
that you're excited about is just the exposure, especially for
the young girls basketball players that are out there to

(02:33):
see these stars of the future, especially the way the
WNPA and the college game has exploded.

Speaker 2 (02:38):
Right.

Speaker 3 (02:39):
Yes, Yes, I am very excited something that I have
dreamed about for so many years. I have experience working
for a WNBA team and seeing the growth and to
see where it is now is just amazing. And I
love how this event is going to grow the girls
and women's basketball here in Michigan and just continue that

(03:00):
development and show girls that there is a place for
women's basketball and you can get to the WNBA.

Speaker 1 (03:08):
Grind Rapids Gold is a sponsor. Great to see with
the NBA G League, Junior WNBA the Score Restaurant right
there on Plainfield. There's a whole list. You can find
out more and obviously go to the event. We're happy
to be a sponsor as well as ninety six to
one the game and Caalise, as we go back to you,
I want you to take us through this roster process
and also the head coaches you got involved, because now

(03:28):
that you got your wonder to your belt, it kind
of recruits itself a little bit, right, and you're excited
about this year's rosters.

Speaker 2 (03:34):
Yeah, I'm so debout this year's rosters of me. Last
year we were fortunate enough to grab Gabby Reynolds, who
is Michigan and Miss Basketball last year. And this year
at the final buzzer, we got Anna Ye Pitch who
she attends Rockbord but she's this year's Miss Basketball. And
our East is solid. We got Nicole Fellows from Catholic

(03:57):
Centro at the head of our team West Cameron Vandenboss
holland Christian Kids. She's amazing. I've loved watching her growth
through watching her NBA, her AAU program she plays with.
And then on our east side, we got Jarvis Mitchell,
he coaches over at Way Memorial. This guy super intense.

(04:18):
We're excited to see him in actions. He's always locked in.
He's like a sideline spark, always bringing energy and it
trickles down to his players and we're really excited for that.

Speaker 1 (04:28):
And when you look at it too, Colleena Bryant as
a familiar name I think for a lot of people
that went over to the Bresilent Center part of Wayne
Memorial who Jarvis coached, and she was a Miss Basketball finalist.
She's going to go to Drexel University. And Nayah Davis
a great player out of Utica Ford. Krrie Keith for
another one, Freeland, I know she's going to I believe Northwood.
And then you look at the team west roster, you're
absolutely right as far as loaded. Kaitlyn Curink gonna go

(04:50):
on and play at Saginaw Valley State, Cam Vanderbosch I
covered from Holland Christian going to go to Toledo, I mean,
Matty Yule, Josie desmid To Helpe, Gillian Sire. Well, that's
what the thing that impresses me is how girls high
school basketball I think has evolved and it is fantastic basketball.
And this event is just star studded with all stars.
I mean, we're talking all state selections all across the state, right.

Speaker 2 (05:13):
Yeah, I mean, and the process was really cool actually,
like you said, now players are actually reaching out to
our Instagram account to be a part of this, and
we're actually having to turn away kids. But we started
tracking them pretty early in their season. And some of
these kids are just big names who we've had our
eye on for, you know, since they were sophomorean juniors. Oh.

(05:34):
Also with Colleen O Bryant, she's a way she actually
committed to Western Michigan University by the.

Speaker 1 (05:40):
Way, Oh wow, good, great, he.

Speaker 2 (05:42):
Committed to Western University, be committed from Drexel. Now she
decided to stay home and play there.

Speaker 1 (05:47):
So now take us through how the afternoon is going
to unfold and the sequence of events you mentioned his
Skills Challenge, a three point contest, and then the All
Star Game.

Speaker 2 (05:56):
Yeah, so our players are going to come in. We're
going a media day for them actually at the beginning
of the event, where we have someone coming in and
take pictures with their teams and their coaches, and we'll
move on and the first event will be our skills Challenge,
and we have from teams Tyra Wright, A Ned Davis,
and kr Keefer participating in that and on the west

(06:18):
side in the Why Pitch, Cameron Bandon, Boss, Kaitlyn Garant
and Maddy Yule will be in that skills challenge and
we'll move on to our three point contest and we
have fourteen players who are participating in BAT. We're gonna
have three rounds. We'll take the top four score first round,
we'll move on in the second round, take the top two,
and then we'll have our final round and then we'll
get going with the All Star Game and it's gonna

(06:40):
be about them. I'm excited.

Speaker 1 (06:41):
Queen of the Court twenty twenty five and its second year.
It's going to be Saturday, June seventh, two to six pm.
Get out there, bring the kids, ten dollars, get you
in at Aquanas College. We hope to see everybody out there.
I'm looking forward to you guys. Thank you so much
for bringing this event two Grand Rapids. We're excited about
it and thanks for joining us today.

Speaker 2 (07:00):
Thank thank you.
