Speaker 1 (00:00):
Grand Rapids Griffins are home tomorrow night against Springfield before
heading to Iowa for two this weekend. Assistant coach Bryant
lash Off, is he in the power play, Brian, thanks
for doing this today, Good morning, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
No problem, Thanks for having me.
Speaker 3 (00:14):
How's the transition, Ben Bryan? As far as not having
to get up and actually practice as a player anymore,
you can just sit there with maybe a cup of
coffee and coach, right, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
That's been nice. My body's definitely thanking me at this time,
so it's been good though. It's been a good transition.
I've enjoyed myself a lot helping the guys as much
as I can, and it's been nice to having the
staff around me that I've had the last two years
to be able to help me kind of get my
feet wet and you know, try to get better.
Speaker 3 (00:44):
And better at this People are excited about the young
prospects for the Red Wings and this team in the
mix they have and for a guy who spent a
lot of time here with the grind Apples Griffins, you're
part of our Cold A Cup championship teams in twenty
thirteen and seventeen. When you look at this squad and
depending I know on you know, the Red Wings and
calling players up and guys moving back and forth. But
(01:05):
does this team have something special where you think they
can win it all?
Speaker 2 (01:10):
But I think we certainly have the work ethic that
I think is required to go on a good run.
I think we have a good mix of veteran players
that kind of lead the way and that in that respect,
guys that have you know, picked up the pace and
practice and in games obviously as well. So I think
that's uh, it helps having that mix of older veteran
(01:32):
guys that have that type of work ethic, and then
it just kind of drags everybody along. And we have
good young players that have a chance to continue to
develop and and they're they're all good, good people first
and foremost, and I think that helps them kind of
expedite their development because they all work hard and they're
all willing to do things it takes to win. So
you put those together, it gives yourself an opportunity, which
(01:54):
is all I can ask for, and then try to
continue to grow as a team throughout the season.
Speaker 3 (01:58):
Griffin's power play and assisting coach former captain for your
grand upas Griffin's and longtime career here Brian Lashoffs joining
us this morning, and Brian, I know you guys are
in the midst of a four game losing streak right now,
hoping to snap that with a winning Wednesday tomorrow night.
But you take on the Springfield Thunderbirds, and this has
happened the last couple of seasons. I know Bob Cazer's
talked about this. I think we've talked about with you.
(02:19):
How nice is it for not only you guys as
players and coaches. I know it's a different prep for you,
but for the fans to see more of the AHL.
I love this where we're seeing teams like Lehigh Valley's
coming in for a couple games next week. Did we
just typically didn't see it was kind of Cleveland, it
was Milwaukee, right, it was Chicago, and so that's got
to be exciting for you guys and the players as well.
Speaker 2 (02:42):
Yeah, I think it's definitely welcome, especially at this time
of the year. You get into these months where the
season came feel a little bit longer for the guys,
and anytime you get someone from the other conference to
be able to come in, I think it's great for
the guys to get a new sense of energy that
they're playing guys that they haven't played before, or at
least in this case, we haven't played in a couple
(03:02):
of months. And it's grouped of fans too. I mean,
you get to see obviously the young prospects from the
teams in our division are seeing a lot, but you know,
we're playing a team with their own set of prospects
that you know some will be in the NHL. So
I think it's good to be able to see what
the league, the future of the NHL will be sut
across the league, not just in our division. So it's definitely,
(03:26):
you know, welcome at this time of year, especially you're
getting a heavy dose of our division a lot of times,
and to be able to play someone different, someone new,
hopefully bring a little bit of energy. And then, like
you said, we're trying to get out of it, but
it was skid here, so I think hopefully playing somebody new,
we'll give us that type of a little bit of
an extra energy to break out of it.
Speaker 3 (03:46):
Lastly, you're the perfect guy to ask this because we
just got done with the HL All Star Classic and
obviously we had representation again you were a player captain
in the twenty twenty three so you've done that. You've
also won a gold medal with Team USA at the
World Junior TI Chips. What do you think of what
the NHL is trying to do. And I'm excited that
hockey is going to be back in the Olympics. I
think it always should have been, but this four nations
(04:08):
face off. People for the next couple of weeks are
trying to get their head around this. What do you
think of this concept?
Speaker 2 (04:14):
I think it's great. I mean anytime you can get
best on best, I think, you know, I think it
just grows the game. I think people get to see,
you know, at Crosby get to play with McDavid and
Matthews and you know that's the Chuck brothers and Larkin
and maybe all these guys get to play together after
playing against each other for so long during the season.
It's it's a welcome, uh, you know, tournament in the
(04:35):
middle of the season. I think it's great. So anytime
you get an Olympics or a World Juniors, the younger players,
I mean, you get the best guys playing with the
best guys against the best guys. I mean it's it's
I think it's great for the sport to be able
to show it off in that in that respect, so
I think it's it's an exciting time to be able
to watch. You know, everybody will be watching here, so
we're I think it's a great thing to have for
(04:58):
the league and for the game.
Speaker 1 (04:59):
Is it coach now? I mean if it was just
Lash when you were a player, No, it's captain Lash captain.
That's a good point. Do you have to say the
whole Lash off?
Speaker 2 (05:09):
Its his cap and now it's just last So I'll
keep it at that.
Speaker 1 (05:12):
Guy.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
Guys will treat me to say it. So's that's all good.
Speaker 1 (05:15):
Your grand rapid scrifferins home tomorrow night. Brian lash Off,
thanks for your time today.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
All right, thanks guy,
