Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is West Michigan's Morning News. Steve Kelly, Bet Kaita
and Laurence Smith. The Grand Rapid S Griffins home for
two this week Wednesday and Friday against the Texas Stars.
They are on fire. Captain Dominic Shine joining us in
the power play. Dominic, thanks so much for doing this today.
Speaker 3 (00:19):
Oh yeah, thanks for having.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
Me so dominic as captain of a team that is
twenty eight to one point one and one fifty eight points.
I mean, you guys are crushing everybody. Do you take
full credit for this success?
Speaker 3 (00:32):
No, not at all. We have such a good group
of guys, so it's been really fun.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
All Kenny decide now your tenth season as a Griffin,
ninth year as a pro, and so perfect guy to
be the captain and you know what it means to
be a captain for the Grand Uparts Griffins. I got
to ask you pee wee hockey all the way down
growing up, you know, college, have you ever been a
part of a team as dominant as this? Isn't it amazing?
At the professional level you're seeing this?
Speaker 3 (00:59):
Yeah, I mean I've been a part of it, you know,
maybe in like you know, like you said, Bantam's and
midget Major. So like we had a couple of teams
that were really good. We won a national championship with
Little Caesars and Compuware. I went back to back years,
so we had some really good teams. I think we
were like I don't know' say it was like seventy
two and four or something that year. So like at
(01:21):
that level, you know, it's it's a little different. You're
playing you know your kids. It's at the professional level.
It's been pretty special.
Speaker 2 (01:28):
They're twenty two points guys ahead of second place Chicago.
We hate the Wolves. We know that we've established that
on the show, but I mean twenty two points ahead
in they're thirty one games in. So I'll ask you
this question because we had coach Watson on before the
holiday and we're asking do you change anything up? Do
you do it? He's like, no, no, I mean everything's good.
Just leave it away. As a player, do you guys
(01:51):
find yourself getting bored a little bit? I mean, what
do you do with because everything seems to be working?
Speaker 3 (01:56):
You know that is that isn't a thing? You know.
We come in Alkham after a win and we kind
of no one's you know, all pumped up or things
like that. So I think the thing that you know,
coach Watti does a really good job of is just
keeping things into perspective. The way you approach practice is
really is really big. So you know, he approaches that like,
you know, we're going into a big weekend, doesn't care
(02:18):
what we did last weekend. And I think that's what's
what's really helped us have success.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
We're on the Griffin's Power Play. We do it every
Tuesday here on Wood Radio with Westmiscuits when News at
eight thirty six. Captain Dominic Shine, who's having a tremendous season.
By the way, what do you credit your season too?
I mean, twenty five games played down, if you have
fourteen goals, you got thirteen assists. I mean, the net
has to seem gigantic to you when you're shooting. What's
been the difference for you this year?
Speaker 3 (02:42):
My teammates are ound me. I mean at this level,
when you get to the throw, everyone's good, you know
what I mean. It can just depend on the years
that you have. You know, some years you're playing with
different guys and stuff. So I think this year I've
played with you know, great players and our defense that
have been outstanding. So it's just been whole team effort
and that's not why everyone has success. So it's been uh,
(03:04):
it's been great.
Speaker 2 (03:05):
You know, when you see successful teams, no matter what sport,
team chemistry is big. So we got to ask you
when you see your teammates, especially now as a leader,
as a captain, have success. I mean Sebastian Costa HL
goaltend of the month, back to back months November December,
John Leonard, you know, goes to the Red Wings, does
a great job, comes back to you. Guys now gets recalled.
It's got to feel good in the locker room to
(03:26):
see those guys again and that they are having success, right, Oh.
Speaker 3 (03:30):
Yeah, big time. You know. That's that's that's the thing
about this level is you want guys to succeed, and
then once you know maybe they're playing at their best,
then you kind of lose them to the NHL. So
it's it's tough sometimes because you you maybe play half
a season with a guy or you know, you lose
you lose someone early in the season. You know, Danielson,
we lost him pretty early in the year. But you know,
you're happy for him that he's doing good. But at
(03:52):
the same time, you just got to keep going. And
we have so many good players. That's the thing, Like,
we have too many vets right now, so we're rotating.
You're only allowed to dress six vets. We have eight.
So every night two guys are out and we're still
having this this sort of success. That's been pretty special.
Speaker 1 (04:09):
I saw the playing Iowa Wild that Thanksgiving week on
that Friday night, and Dominic is in the crease and
the puck comes to a guy more center ice and
you looked right with a quarter of a second and
hopped and the puck went under your skates and scored.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
Do you get an assist for a jump?
Speaker 3 (04:34):
No, maybe you should maybe, though.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
I can't well how hot was it coming because he
might have just wanted to get out of the way too.
Speaker 3 (04:40):
No, no, no, that's usually the case if someone wind up
and you're in front of you kind of just either
close your eyes or jump.
Speaker 1 (04:47):
It was incredible either way. I would say you did
it on purpose for the goal. Dominic Shawne captain the
Grand Rapids Griffin's home for two this week. Thanks for
your time today.
Speaker 3 (04:56):
Thank you
