Speaker 3 (00:33):
Well, Happy Halloween everyone, Good Friday evening, and welcome live
to Memorial Field on the shores of Reed's Lake, East
Grand Rapids High School, where tonight's for our LMCU game
of the week. As we begin to drive to Ford
Field for twenty twenty five the MAHSA Football Playoffs presented
by Vandalon Home Improvement, a Division three pre district matchup
(00:54):
with the RedHawks of Cedar Springs coming at eight to
one and the Pioneers of East Ground Rapids at seven
and Buck Gino's in costume.
Speaker 4 (01:01):
I don't know about you.
Speaker 3 (01:02):
I have a feeling we have a lot of moms
and dads that might be doing some trick or treating
right now, maybe sneaking over to the game or heading
out to their community game.
Speaker 4 (01:09):
We've got full coverage for you. Our Lake Shore game.
Speaker 3 (01:12):
Of the Week, fantastic, the rematch of Mota Shores and
Muskegan Aclee Stadium as well, two traditional great stadiums to
host Week one action here and that'll be on one
oh seven m Us the Moose with our own Jason
Hutting and Tom Kendrin buck Gino. You're in the full
Dica uniform, so you are ready to go tonight, your
old stomping grounds, the home of the Pioneers.
Speaker 5 (01:31):
It's I'll say it again for the people to understand
the reference the tigris and the euphrates of high school football.
Now we've only got one and it's not even a tributary,
but it's the beautiful Reads Lake in the background. And
I've said it before, this is the best view that
you're going to get. And not in Michigan, not in
the Midwest, but I believe the country. There is no
better view for a high school football game than Memorial
(01:54):
Field and East Grind Rapids. And it's so fun to
be back here. Two teams Brett that we wanted to
see in this season. Number one, the East Grand Rapids
Pioneers having a tremendous season under Josh Shannick. They are
at seven and two, his best season to date. Here
is the Pioneers head man in his fourth season, and
then Gus Kapolka. They've only lost one game.
Speaker 3 (02:13):
That was the Kendawa Hills coming in at eight and
won a tremendous matchup.
Speaker 4 (02:17):
A storied rivalry.
Speaker 5 (02:18):
Now, they don't play a lot of games together, but
when they do they are something to behold. I remember
the one the East Grind Rapids was nine to zero
coming into the regular season, and there's probably a lot
of people that don't want to hear this right now
since we're in the press box of East Grand Frampus
High School. But the Cedar Springs comes in and beats
them by a point forty three to forty two, a
big upset. This has been a sneaky good rivalry since
(02:41):
they meet most of the time in the playoffs, and
they also played in the regular season. You remember the
Tornado week, right we were doing the Friday game, the
Muskegan Rockford game. Well, they were supposed to play here
Thursday night. They end up playing Friday night at Rockford
because of all the damage from the tornadoes of twenty
twenty two. So just so many interesting things have happened
(03:02):
when these two teams get together and we get to
see two of the best teams in the area that
we have not covered yet, and there'll be a treat
to do so tonight right here from Eastburn Repat High
School and the historic Memorial Feel.
Speaker 3 (03:14):
Now, smaller crew for the playoffs, but our executive producer extraordinaire,
also our studio host tonight is the one and only
Joe Errant work in the Rapid Radio score Center for
the playoffs. Always key for Week one is cole Bania,
and of course we've got the crew over there Charles
Keegan holding down the for Tom Kendra and jas Nuttin.
If we get bonus coverage of that game. If our
(03:35):
game goes a little quicker, we will do that and
switch over before we.
Speaker 4 (03:38):
Get into our discount door postgame show.
Speaker 3 (03:40):
We'll have all the scores and more with Joe and
Cole coming up with the abbreviated Meyer Scoreboard show for
the playoffs, well, this is the jad H's Family Stores
pregame show It's brought to you by our friends of
Jdh's Family Stores with now sixty plus locations across Michigan
to serve you jd H's Family Stores stopping on the.
Speaker 4 (03:57):
Way to your next game and on your way home.
Speaker 3 (03:59):
We're gonna have some genus gems to look at with
some other games. Buck talked about a couple of them
that we had our ad. We also did our four
pack if you missed it last night with our high
school football preview show, so we'll talk about those a
little bit later on, but coming up next after the break.
We also talked last night to Josh Shaddock, now in
as fourth season. As Buck mentioned seven to two, they're
(04:19):
looking for their first playoff win under his tutelage here
at East Grand Rapids, and we had the thoughts about
that this outstanding front seven defense for Eest Grand Rapids
and they will be challenged tonight.
Speaker 4 (04:31):
Have not seen a wing tea team yet this year.
Speaker 3 (04:33):
And obviously we know Guskapoca and the RedHawks can put
some points on the board. It's East Grand Rapids, It's
Cedar Springs, a Division III pre district. On the Drive
to Ford Field presented by vandal On Home improvement. We're
counting down to kickoff live right here on ninety six
to one the game. I always like to ask coaches
(05:01):
this question after selection Sunday, how hungry is this team?
Because as good as seven and two is, you're playing
an eight to one team and neither one of you
won your conference.
Speaker 4 (05:11):
So this is kind of like that second season. But
it's like, okay, boys, let's go out and get it right.
Speaker 1 (05:17):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (05:17):
I think we we preach. I mean, you could call
a coach, but we say every year like we want
to be playing our best football at the end of
the year. I firmly believe that we are playing our
best football and I'm very confident that our best football
is yet to come. And we gotta we got to
put together a great week and we have a very
very good opponent obviously, with that presents so many challenges
(05:38):
for us. And we haven't seen a te team. We
just haven't And uh, you know a lot of people like,
oh do you like that matchup? Because our defense is
good in the box. It's like the tee is not
the same as just against a standard you know, run team,
like we would probably be considered a run team offensively,
but it's a different thing. The tee is is you
know you're defending their players, sure, but you're really defending
the scheme and it's just so different. So I would
(06:00):
say that from a hunger perspective. Yeah, I mean, we
haven't won a playoff game since I've been here. We've
been here three years, and it's not about me. It's
about our players that are playing for us. I have
seen a playoff win since they've been in high school.
I think it's been for probably pushing a decade since
the last EGR playoff win, and that's with a lot
of pretty good teams just haven't gotten it done in
the postseason. So one game season. We feel like we're
(06:22):
playing some good football right now. You know, if you
could pick a side to be good on right now,
I take defense ten times out of ten in the tournament,
and it's allowed our offense to really, you know, progress
and get better. And I really think our offense has
gotten a lot better over the last month of the season.
So we're playing some pretty good, complimentary football right now,
and we're going to need all three phases on Friday,
for sure.
Speaker 4 (06:42):
Well, I wanted to.
Speaker 7 (06:42):
Ask you about the offense because you talked earlier about
how you guys overhauled it. You're doing things completely different
outside of the ball the show. I guess, why do that?
And how has it progressed throughout the season.
Speaker 6 (06:52):
That's a great question. It's a I could go on
forever about this, so I'm probably a separate, separate conversation.
But the key was, you know, we had three years
where we were in the playoffs, and if you look
at our losses in big games, whether that's the playoff
games or big regular season games, there is one glaring
consistency and that we can't score. You know, in twenty
(07:14):
twenty three, we were seven to two and we were
shut out in both of our losses in the regular season,
albeit to state champion FHC and a regional finalists en
Byron Center, really good teams, but we could score. And
then we lost to Coopersill in the playoffs fourteen to thirteen,
went for two to try to steal it at the end,
and so just slow scoring. Last year we lost seven
to zero to Forest Hill Central. So we kind of
(07:35):
looked down in the big picture of our program. As
you know, we're a community school, even though we're in
Grand rapids like we don't get transfers. That's not the
world we live in here. School of choice really is
very challenging here. But we also don't lose our kids.
We know our kids from kindergarten are going to be here.
It's kind of a destination community for families. And so
when I look down the pipeline, it was like, all right,
(07:57):
we've got to put more on our quarterback. We feel
like we can we will always be able to find
a quarterback who's good kid with a multi skill set
and we can develop that. And then we need to
be an option team. If we're relying on running backs
and wide receivers, there's just going to be years we
don't have the kind of talent that we need to
compete with Northview and you know, Catholic Central in the
(08:19):
top of our schedule. We feel like we're going to
be physical, we're going to be big, we're going to
be strong. But we wanted to, you know, be an
option team, and so we've gotten into ten personnel. We're
run the quarterback. I mean we run quarterback twenty twenty
five times a game and try to get a numbers
advantage there. And when we have really good talent, at receiver,
like I feel like we have this year, we'll throw it,
and if there's years we don't, it becomes a little
bit less of a less of an issue. So that's
(08:40):
kind of the shorter answer of a big scheme question.
But that was the reason for the change, and then
the progression has been amazing. I mean, if you look
at our first two weeks, we were just anemic offensively,
kind of broke out of a slump. Week three played
Obviously Catholic Central will make you feel like you're not
good on offense, but we actually played pretty well. I
felt like an offense that night. And really since the
north View game, I mean north View we had ten points,
(09:02):
which looks bad. We ran for two hundred and sixty yards.
So since that point in time, I think the last
month of the season, we're putting up about forty two
to forty three points a game. When you combine that
with giving up about six or seven pretty good formula.
Speaker 3 (09:13):
Talk about some of your players on offense, coach, and
let's start with a quarterback, because when you do that,
as you know, it's good to have a veteran quarterback.
I think to make that transition, a guy who got
some experience, and that's Josh McCuen. Oh, by the way,
it might help, he's a senior six y three to
two thirty, right.
Speaker 6 (09:28):
Yeah, he's a big boy. He's uh yeah. I mean
it's kind of funny this week with us who we
play with Sedar. I mean, he's going to play some
d tackle, So not many kids out there playing quarterback
and dtackle. But there's also not a lot of kids
in Division three who are six three two thirty that
just stand on the sideline. So you know, it all
starts with him. We knew, uh, you know, he just
had an unreal off season in the weight room. I mean,
(09:50):
he is one of the hardest working kids I've ever
coached when it comes to the weight room and just
buy in. And it's not just like this offseason, it's
forty years of it, and so we knew he'd be
able to handle big load in terms of running the football.
Feel really good about our offensive line. Obviously, we've had
some injuries that have hurt us moving forward down the stretch,
but I mean I feel like grand adle Off is
the best two way lineman that I've seen this year probably,
(10:13):
and it's not very close, and so when you have
an elite offensive lineman and a really big quarterback like that,
it just simplifies the game a little bit because we
play in four receiver sets all the time, and you know,
you've got to defend four receivers, and most teams don't
want to defend those four with four, so they're defending
them with five or six, and all of a sudden,
we've got six man box. Is kind of the heaviest
that teams can give us in theory. And so last week,
(10:37):
for example, we got a seven man box and we
threw it. You know, we're sixteen for twenty for almost
three hundred yards passing. They're all pretty easy throws. So
we're getting to a point now where that quarterback run
game is just a nice, nice way to alleviate kind
of the obstacles we had in the pass where you
just kind of hand to hand it off a lot. So,
and Josh is a huge Josh mccoin is a huge
part of being able to do that. It's not just
his ability to run, it's his durability. I mean the
(10:59):
Northview game, we got the ball with six and a
half minutes to go, never gave it back to him.
Took a knee on the five yard line, ran ten
straight downhill quarterback runs. There's just not a lot of
teams that could do that, and that's a testament to
his weight room. You know the off season he had.
Speaker 7 (11:11):
Yeah, big kid, but he's also All state baseball player too,
So clearly a really good athlete.
Speaker 6 (11:15):
We're talking with great athlete, great athlete.
Speaker 7 (11:18):
Scron Repids head coach Josh Shaddock and coach looking at
your district, it's interesting to me. I want to get
your thoughts on this, Daniel. You're just focused on Sedar Springs,
so that's all you can worry about right now. But
you're in an RCA district, right It's you and Three
River Cities Alliance teams?
Speaker 4 (11:30):
Did that catch you by surprise?
Speaker 7 (11:31):
And everybody has their own way of looking at what
might happen when you saw that draw?
Speaker 4 (11:36):
Just what did you think?
Speaker 6 (11:37):
Yeah, when we came off the you know, obviously we
had a big game here Friday, Hearts of Gold Senior Night,
Youth football night. All of our you know, focuses on that.
And that's kind of the nice part about Michigan playoffs
because you don't know your opponent, so there's really no
that you can't really look forward to playoffs. You don't
you have a clue who you play. So we came
off the field and started doing what everybody did. It
was just a little score watching, just to kind of
see what was going to shake out. And so when
(12:00):
we left Friday after our home game, we we I
thought it was about a fifty to fifty chance a
sedar in Zeveland West And so the nice part about that,
as for our defensive staff was like, well, we'll probably
getting the tea no matter what. Someone asked which I'd
rather have, and I was like, it's between like would
you rather jump out of an airplane or dround? And
like with one, I mean, you know, so I think
that uh surprised maybe. I mean if you if you
(12:23):
forced me to pick, I would have guessed they would
have sent us to Zealand. But that wasn't I didn't
have strong convictions of that kind of knew we were
playing a tea team. So either way, I mean, I
think either way you slice it. You know, do you
want to play the defending state champs with the history
they have, or do you want to play a team
that runs the tee and is eight and one? Averaging
fifty points a game. I don't know that there's a
good answer to that, so, but yeah, the district's tough. Obviously,
(12:45):
those RCA teams. We've we played Cedar a couple of
years ago in Week one. Coopers will beat us here
in the playoffs two years ago. We haven't seen kind
of wa So yeah, I mean just it's it's kind
of an intriguing district with those three RCAs and then
just kind of throwing us in the next.
Speaker 3 (12:57):
Coach and wrap up in the last thirty seconds. And
I know that you sent me some information on it too.
You have a lot of respect for Gus got Pocas
coaches down, but just kind of talk about what their
team looks like.
Speaker 6 (13:07):
Yeah, So, I mean they're as good as it gets
running it. And that's the thing you're you're almost defending
the system more than you're defending the players. And that
is not a discredit to any of their kids.
Speaker 4 (13:16):
The system.
Speaker 6 (13:17):
I mean, Gus is a national resource for that. You know,
there's a reason they host the whatever Midwest or National
Tea Clinic. And I mean he's, uh, he's just as
good as it gets on that. So they'll have some
things dialed up for us. Obviously, we have to have
a unique game plan. You can't just sit there in
your base defense. I mean, if we give them our
base defense, they might rush for five hundred yards. It's
worth a three down. And obviously that's going to be
a challenge against that. So kind of just finding what
(13:39):
you like personnel wise, and you know, Gus is going
to have some some wrinkles and we're going to have
to adjust and you know, play on the fly and
just kind of see what fits. And I mean they
are big, they are physical, their backs run really hard,
they're fast, and I think what's different about this version
of it than the one we saw a couple of
years ago is they have some explosive players on the backfield.
Their quarterbacks a good athlete. They're they're running backs are
(14:00):
They're just good. I mean, there was the reason they
live in one or two formations and score fifty points
a game. There's really really good at a well coached,
good athletes coach.
Speaker 3 (14:08):
I know it's a busy week. Thank you so much
for your time and best luck tomorrow night.
Speaker 6 (14:12):
Yeah, thanks guys, good talking to you.
Speaker 3 (14:14):
Josh Shaddick, East Grand Rapids head coaching his fourth season.
In our pregame cover chure, counting down to kickoff for
this pre district Division three matchup Cedar Springs and East
Grand Rapids, and we're about ten minutes away from kickoff
as we go to break the Montel Construction Coaches Corner,
brought to you by Montel Construction, a proud sponsor of
the high school football game of the week, and you're
(14:37):
listening to a live courtesy of LMCU right here on
ninety six to one the game.
Speaker 4 (14:48):
Red Behinta buck genail back here.
Speaker 3 (14:49):
A memorial Field and Cedar Springs coming in eight and
one overall five and one in the River City's Alliance,
good for second place behind Kenwa Hills. They're only lost
this year forty nine thirty five, but even in that game,
but you know this offense with Gus Kapolka scoring some
points and for East Grand Rapids they finished at seven
to two overall. Early on Week one got blown out
by Lowell forty seven from the RCA. But then in
(15:12):
Week four, a dog fight, great matchup as you know
over the years, Grand Uppits Cathic Central beat him ten
to seven. Grandpis Cathic Central goes on to go unbeaten
and win the ok Black. East Grand Rapids finishes in
second place. So we think this is gonna be a
great ball game. As you mentioned, we were excited when
it came out with the drawing selection Sunday. So break
it down for us with our Vandalot Home Improvement keys
to the contest.
Speaker 4 (15:33):
Well for Suitter Springs.
Speaker 5 (15:34):
Their offense has been explosive this year, but they're gonna
have to play in good field position because East Grand
Rapids with the front seven that they bring to bear tonight.
Gus Kapolka even said it was the best front seven
he's seen all year, they are gonna have to win
the field position battle or at least get to a
stalemate because they cannot be driving eighty ninety yards on
this East Grand Rapids team every time they get the football.
(15:56):
They have to play in a good field position throughout
the game. East Grand Rapids what they have to do,
They have to take care of the football. You guys
have seen Cedar Springs a bunch of times since we've
been together in this booth. They are able to take
that clock and just like Zeland West did last week
on the first drive of the game, they're able to
win away a ton of time. So what they can't
(16:17):
do is for East Grand Rapids, is they cannot turn
the ball over. They cannot lose possessions because not only
have they struggled offensively and they're starting to come around,
but they've also got.
Speaker 4 (16:29):
A defense that again they can't give up that field position.
Speaker 5 (16:31):
So they just have to take care of the football,
make every possession they have count because like a team
with a team like Cedars Springs, they can take a
lot of time off that clock and leave you looking behind.
Speaker 3 (16:44):
And when you look at it as the teams are
about to make their way out onto the field, here
at Memorial Field, one of the great sites, as Buck
mentioned for high school football in all of West Michigan.
They call it the little Big House with the renovation,
with the break, it does look like the Big House
Dan Arbor on a smaller scale. I look at this matchup,
and you're right, looking at what we saw last week,
(17:05):
it could be a mere image. East Grand Rapids like
a West Catholic, Cedar Springs like a zealand And West.
And we all know that turned out pretty good, caught
into the fourth quarter, So we are excited for this matchup,
and you look at the other side of this bracket.
We saw that game in the regular season Coopersville and
Kennel Hills. The only difference this time it's at the
home of the Knights, and Kennel Hills and Don Fellows
have been pretty good, I mean out standing at home.
Speaker 4 (17:25):
They haven't lost there this year.
Speaker 5 (17:26):
I think pound for pound, Division three the best bracket
in the MHSA.
Speaker 4 (17:30):
I leave Division one because.
Speaker 5 (17:31):
We always know the pedigree there, but Division three for
all the rest of them, I think this is the
strongest bracket, especially in this idea of loll and Cold
Water in Middleville and Hastings in another district. This is
going to be a very competitive division.
Speaker 3 (17:43):
Well, step aside for the National Anthem will come back
with your Sporting News starting lineups and the opening kickoff.
Speaker 4 (17:48):
It's East Grand Rapids.
Speaker 3 (17:49):
And Cedar Springs kicking off the NHSA Football Playoff four
years in twenty twenty five, brought to you by our
friends at Vandalion Home Improvement, and here come the pioneers
at East Grand Rapids after the National Anthem, Senior Springs
(18:10):
already out here and our Bandalion Home Improvement keys to
the contest with buck Gino, brought to you each week
by a Vandalion Home improvement with eighty.
Speaker 4 (18:17):
Five plus years experience.
Speaker 3 (18:19):
Bandalono Improvement offers top notch contract for services to customers
in West Michigan.
Speaker 4 (18:23):
It's not too cool for these guys.
Speaker 3 (18:25):
And don't forget they got the location up in Traverse
City as well called six one six six six nine
eleven eleven at six one six six six nine eleven
eleven more details or is it vandalians dot com.
Speaker 4 (18:35):
You know who's happy, Eric Rassman, because his Maroons.
Speaker 3 (18:38):
Of Holland Christian made them wyoffs in north View surprisely
after they got beat seventy to thirty five by four,
so Northern did not.
Speaker 4 (18:44):
This very competitive OK Black division.
Speaker 3 (18:46):
Boy, the Oka Black I think probably the best division
this year outside of the Red because, like you said,
the four teams that made the playoffs, and they were
not the four teams that we thought wouldn't make the
playoffs to.
Speaker 4 (18:58):
Start the year.
Speaker 3 (18:59):
But a tram Men showing by the OK Black only
one team under five hundred. That's a strong division. It's
kind of like the OK Gold was last year. The
Oka Black was that division this year.
Speaker 5 (19:10):
Very competitive in both Sorry, all of those teams our
playoff ready because that was a tough division to make
it through. I know Catholic Central went nine to zero,
but they had some dog fights in that conference, and
so all of these teams are going to be ready
for playoff football.
Speaker 3 (19:25):
So East Grand Rapids won the toss bug Geno their
of the second half will climb the junior six foot
one sixty sent to tee it up at the forty
East Grand Rapids with the traditional Penn State look with
the yellow caps and the blue stripe down the middle,
but they do have the numbers on one side. Alabama
they have the all blue uniforms with the yellow numbers. Meanwhile,
(19:47):
Cedar Springs with their visiting white jerseys with the black
pants and.
Speaker 4 (19:51):
The Michigan look.
Speaker 3 (19:52):
As two men back deep and the kick is way
fielded in the fly inside. The ten crossed the eight
fifteen to twenty and still on his feet piling behind
that wedge for Cedar Springs out to the thirty yard line.
Pretty good return that time. Give him return of twenty
two and on that return was Luke Egan, the senior
for Cedar Springs. Let's take a look at your Sporting
(20:13):
You starting limpsou on offense for Guska Polkin. The RedHawks
number one junior, Nick Robinson is their quarterback. Six two,
one seventy five. Cayden Dwyer has been a multi year
varsity player. He is back for his senior season, one
of the leading rushers five hundred and ninety two yards
coming in twelve touchdowns.
Speaker 4 (20:30):
He is six foot point eighty.
Speaker 3 (20:32):
Noah Mallory is also in the backfield and Spencer showing
barn handoff up the mill that's dry or turned to
his right, but still battling and pushing the pile with
the offensive line. He's got a first down in more
setting the tone early across the forty and out to
the forty three yard line gim McGain of thirteen. But
I think the last five or six he was helped
by his offensive line buck well.
Speaker 5 (20:52):
And not only that, but the defenders were pulling him.
I mean, so there was the two forces going down
the field for is grand rapids guy to get somebody
in there and just try to cut him down at
the knees or get under there and try to pile
it up.
Speaker 3 (21:04):
Quickly up over the football from the right hash tight
splits and now trying to get to the outside, Robinson's
gonna be run down from the backside, and that's Zach Caswell.
Speaker 4 (21:13):
The senior linebacker, just ran him down.
Speaker 3 (21:15):
This is a quick, big, physical defensive front seven, as
Buck alluded to, and that's gonna be a lost back
INTI the forty to the thirty nine of four yards,
second and fourteen down and distance so big with a
run ora in and.
Speaker 5 (21:28):
Offense Well and Caswell just good penetration, not only he
but other members of that defensive line for the Pioneers,
and they get back there before Robinson can even really
carry out the fake. He didn't have a choice, and
if he handed the dryer, dryer was gonna get buried
right where he stood. So Robinson tried to make something
out of it and just couldn't get any traction.
Speaker 4 (21:46):
Big grand headloff over the nose.
Speaker 3 (21:48):
Now they try to go wide, turning the corner across
the forty and then dives to the sideline on the
carry was Noah Mallory five ten five and a senior
gets back to the original line of scrimmage, they'll give
him to the forty four maybe a yard more so.
Third and nine gate of five clock winding here up front,
your offensive line, your two tight ends, Ryan Larket and
(22:08):
Tyn Lawson. Then you got Shane Flanagan, Doug Hardy, John
lebera Luke Taber, and my favorite name, this guy.
Speaker 4 (22:15):
Goes both ways. For the RedHawks. You gotta go with
big number seventy six, this senior bow Savage. You name
a kid, Bo Savage.
Speaker 5 (22:22):
He's probably not playing the piano as a recital tonight.
Speaker 4 (22:25):
He's playing football. Bow Savage is a football name. Six
three two sixty five.
Speaker 3 (22:29):
Robinson now wants to throw and under pressure, had to
fling it out early in complete on third down, so
Cedar Springs have to punt the football away and getting
the pressure that time defensively was Jackson reed for East
Grand Rapids.
Speaker 5 (22:43):
Again, good penetration by the defensive line. They did not
go for the fake. They knew it's gonna be third
and long, and also good coverage there. Even if Robinson
completes that pass bread it was about three or four
yards short of the sticks and now Cedar Springs will
go in the punk formation.
Speaker 3 (23:01):
Dylan buck backteep by himself standing at the East Round
Rapids twenty a very good kicker and punter is Avery Umphrey.
Speaker 4 (23:07):
We'll talk more about that.
Speaker 3 (23:08):
After the snap gets it away, Wobbly's spiral keeps it low.
Fair catch called for in made at the twenty six
yard line. There is a strong win from our back
here of the press box on the west side here
behind the school, so it's blowing towards Reed's Lake. Keep
that in mind if you're trying to throw passes across
the way towards the visitor's sideline. And obviously with the
(23:31):
special teams, we do have two pretty good kickers who
mentioned Umphrey, but also Klein. It's got about a thirty
five forty yard range as well. When it comes to
field goal attempts, and this field not one of the
one of the very few. I should say that.
Speaker 5 (23:43):
It's not straight north and south, a little bit of
a tilt to us, so that's even gonna play more
into the field conditions. But you're right that crosswind is
going to be tough throwing against the green.
Speaker 3 (23:54):
Here come the Pinder's offense out for the first time.
Ekan wants to go to the air, quick pass and
a little down and out complete. He's got a first
out across the thirty five and after the thirty seven
yard line. They go with a four wide.
Speaker 4 (24:04):
Receiver cent most of the time.
Speaker 3 (24:05):
That's Jacob Gozens the senior on the first catch and
again give him a nice pick up there of about
thirteen yards first and ten.
Speaker 5 (24:14):
Well, and I'm gonna sound real smart because I listened
to coach Shaddick. Watch the box if they go. If
they go light box, that means they can run right now.
It's a six man box, which means you may see
McEwen run the football.
Speaker 4 (24:25):
One back of the back film.
Speaker 3 (24:26):
McEwan takes his snapperolling to his left, gonna go to
the air again, has his target complete near the midfield stripe,
and he'll cross in the RedHawks territory to the forty
seven yard line, that time going sideline to sil And
they went right on the first play to the second
side play to the near sideline on the home sign
and making the catch that time was Dylan Buck.
Speaker 5 (24:46):
That time they saw the light box. What they do
is they run Buck underneath the coverage. McEwen throws it
there in the flat and then Buck makes the rest
with his feet.
Speaker 3 (24:54):
Give you those offensive starts for EGR. After this play,
first down and ten. They'll motion a man from right
to left hand offf he's elite blocker trying to get
the edge. Has some running room inside the forty against
the Cedar Springs defense down to the thirty eights. The
carries at Caswell the senior. We'll get back to Kaswe
in a minute. But when you look at McEwan, what
a difference. He got a lot of experience last year
a junior. We talked about his size sixty three to
(25:15):
two to thirty, very durable, but he's got one hundred
and six point nine passer RADI. As a quarterback, he's
thrown for just under a thousand yards, coming in seven
touchdowns only three I in t Well.
Speaker 4 (25:24):
We saw him at the scrimmage.
Speaker 5 (25:25):
We knew that he could throw the football if necessary,
and so far this season he's done.
Speaker 3 (25:29):
Kate of nine of the carry about Caswell. Now they
want to go jet sweep, trying to turn the corner.
Great job of the Cedar Springs defense. Who else number
seven Cayden Dryer leading the way there on the stop
the senior linebackers six foot one point eighty and they
went jets sweep that time with Tyler Blake, who also
rotating as a running back, but he was stopped for
a loss back outside the forty at the forty one
(25:51):
brings up a third and four for the Pineers.
Speaker 5 (25:52):
It's gonna be a tough play because Cedar Springs has
a lot of guys playing at linebacker spots. They're actually
gonna be out in coverage of that quad for so
those are tough assignments for wide receivers to get blocks
on the edge.
Speaker 3 (26:03):
Big third and four here, freest Ground Rapids. Can the
Cedar Springs defense get a stop? Eight minutes and ticking
left to go in a fast moving first quarter, no score,
East Grand Rapids first chance with the football here, two
wide receivers each way. Mccouen takes his snap, rolling to
his left of rows and out there complete tipped a
little bit inside the thirty five, spins out of a
tackle down inside the Thirty's got a burst down in
more and they'll spawn him at the Cedar Springs twenty
(26:26):
eight yard line. Nice job on the catch again going
to number three Dylan Buck on the near side.
Speaker 5 (26:31):
Well, that's a terrific throw by mckwn right over the
outstretched dryer and into that soft little zone. That's a
tremendous play by Josh mccun wonderful accuracy, picks up a
big first down.
Speaker 4 (26:45):
Coach shattick.
Speaker 3 (26:45):
The Pioneers going little pace here first and ten they
call from the Cedar Springs twenty seven. Now McCune is
first carry, design quarterback keeper Dragon would be tacklers inside
the twenty five. That's powerhouse football, but tough to tackle
at two thirty and a good athlete. He's down to
the twenty one yard line, so give him six second
and four. Got that big offensive line up front, led by,
(27:06):
of course, the big guy that we talked about, the
two way starter and grand Adlock.
Speaker 5 (27:10):
The other thing, you don't necessarily see a lot of
East Grade Rapids changing sides with their offensive linemen. They're
not rooted in those positions. Right now, they shifted the
left and the right guards out of.
Speaker 3 (27:20):
The pistol formation. They'll send a man of motion left
to right there underneath on the handoff. And now the
curious Caswell picks his way down inside the twenty nine.
A lot of running room there. Give him two to
the nineteen. But I mentioned big offensive line. We saw
that in the scrimmage. Caden Gozen's senior number fifty four,
grand Adloft goes sixty three to two sixty James Preston,
(27:41):
Wade Happle and then also the sophomore getting the call tonight,
Isaac Garnall six foot two, thirty third and two. Mckune
takes his snap trying to run right side, not gonna
get there. Great job by the Cedar Springs defense. One
of the first guys there defensively for the RedHawks with
Jonathan Lambara, the junior linebacker who just blitz that time
(28:01):
right in the gap right near the center and stopped
him for no gain.
Speaker 4 (28:04):
M It lost about a half guard.
Speaker 3 (28:06):
It's Ford and well, fourth and three from the twenty
yard line for EGR.
Speaker 5 (28:10):
Mckwn thought he was gonna try to pick overright guard
that was stopped, so he tried to wait for a
hold open and just nothing came available. I think what
we're probably gonna have here is Coach check either taking
a long time, maybe take the time out to think
about this, or are they gonna send in play.
Speaker 3 (28:25):
Well, they gotta stay out there with the offense. Three
wide receivers to the right wat side of the field.
They worked just inside the left hask. They take the
snap set fire. Mchwn got it, sat down to the
coverage and got the first down inside the fifteen to
the fourteen. Nice pickup there of six needed just three
first to ten. That moves to James Rees Grand rapids.
He talked about that last week and Borstel Central stacked
(28:46):
the box.
Speaker 4 (28:46):
He said, we threw very well, but they weren't hard throws,
and we're seeing that right now. They're working both sides.
Speaker 5 (28:51):
You know, they clear out there and then whoever was
over gohest and has a lot of cushion, he's not
gonna come up and press because he's gotta be helping
on the outside.
Speaker 3 (29:00):
Case of a run man in motion, they'll go jet sweep.
But blown up again.
Speaker 4 (29:04):
Good job by the near side defensive end.
Speaker 3 (29:07):
That's big number six junior tie loss in six to three.
He goes to twenty nothing doing and he stopped him
for a loss back just inside the twenty yard line.
That's a good loss of almost five second and fifteen
now coming up for re Ega.
Speaker 5 (29:21):
Just too big and physical out there for the wide
receivers to get blocks on guys like number six.
Speaker 4 (29:27):
Tyler Lawson.
Speaker 5 (29:28):
I think that jet sweep we probably just we moved
that to the back of the playbook tonight, because that's
just gonna be a tough slede. And I'm not saying
that it can't work, but you got big physical guys
out there on smaller slat wide receivers, that's just a
tough block for them to seal that edge.
Speaker 4 (29:42):
Ghostens asa cock split wide.
Speaker 3 (29:45):
They go two wide receivers each way, part of that
receiving corps. Mchune takes a snap from center, sets right
down the middlefield.
Speaker 4 (29:52):
Got him touchdown. Boy.
Speaker 3 (29:54):
He looked the safety off to the left and then
went back to the right. Knew where he wanted to go,
and it was Tyler Blake standing there wide open at
the goal line, makes the catch and walks.
Speaker 4 (30:03):
Into the end zone.
Speaker 3 (30:04):
And with four thirty one left to go here in
the opening corner East Grand Rapids strikes first six and
nothing through the air.
Speaker 4 (30:11):
Blake just running a steam route.
Speaker 5 (30:13):
Good job there by mcewn looking off like you said,
the safety that freezes him.
Speaker 4 (30:18):
That gets Blake the room he needs to get into
the end zone.
Speaker 5 (30:21):
And then mchune delivers a strike way too late as
the coverage and at six nothing Pioneers will.
Speaker 3 (30:26):
Klein, We'll try to tack on the extra point. Kicking
into that wind a little bit bad snap had to
wait for and it come coming, fire it in and
blocking it is the quarterback for Cenia Springs on special teams.
Nick Robinson kind of blocked out with his leg, but
again it was kind of a rough snap and the
holder had trouble getting it down, so Klein had to
wait just too late, and East Grand Rapids doesn't get
(30:49):
the extra point. But with four to thirty one left
to go, here in the first Pioneers strike first on Halloween.
We'll come back with more. As you're listening to the
Drive to Ford Field presented by Vandalion Home Improvement. Here
on ninety six to one, the game six nothing, East
Ground Rapits Brett Pikita, buck Gino walking back to Memorial Field.
(31:10):
Love it Halloween night, high school football playoff action.
Speaker 4 (31:14):
Be safe out there.
Speaker 3 (31:15):
If you're listening, Do a little trick or treaty and
save some candy for us, right, buck Gino, And now
the wind we talked about being a little bit of
a factor right on the shores of Reed's Lake. Twice
it's blown off. The tee will climb trying to do
the kickoff dudies and now who'll get some help as
Dylan Buck will come over to do the holy Well
recap that Pioneer scoring Tribe their first offensive posession of
(31:37):
the game after they got to stop defensively high end
over end kick take him by kline, feel right at
the ten yard line by one of the deep men,
cross to twenty, work in the left side, cross to
twenty five thirty and pushing for extra hotit.
Speaker 4 (31:49):
It's a nice job of the return again.
Speaker 3 (31:51):
Luke Egan is senior and Cedar Springs will start their
second offensive possession of the night from their own thirty
four first and ten.
Speaker 4 (31:58):
But how about that East Grand Rapid scoring trive.
Speaker 5 (32:01):
You haven't plays five minutes in twenty six seconds, seventy
four yards covered the last nineteen of that Josh mcchown
to Tyler Blake for the touchdown. The extra point was
blocked and that's where we stand right now. East Gren
Rapids six, Cedar Springs zero.
Speaker 3 (32:16):
Nick Robinson brings the offense out straight t formation behind him,
handoff shown born.
Speaker 4 (32:22):
The full back. Yeah right here, everybody's looking out now.
Speaker 3 (32:25):
I wasn't full that time, but you know I was
watching Shanbourne the fullback did to dive right over center.
The paying customers were all looking yes, and I tell
you what, who did pay for it? But you know
on the wing tea they can tackle. Everybody was Katon
dry Or they were following.
Speaker 5 (32:38):
He's He's like, guys, I I really I don't have
I don't I swear.
Speaker 4 (32:44):
Maybe they're trying to steal this candy. I don't know.
But dat of two.
Speaker 3 (32:46):
Second and eight out to the thirty five shown Born
the junior started last year as a sophomore, and.
Speaker 5 (32:52):
Also fortunate for Eastcuaring Rapids because they kind of sold
out on Dryer.
Speaker 4 (32:55):
There wasn't a lot of room. Robinson front line play.
Speaker 3 (32:58):
Actually gonna keep it on his hip trying to get
to the outside. East Grand Rapids faithful thought there was
a hold out there, but a great stop. Nonetheless, no
running room against this defense. Brody Marlow the senior up
to make them play at the thirty four yard line.
So thirdy long coming up and where there's East Grand
Rapids defense As advertised, they list three down line, but
they got five guys up there trying to stop this
(33:20):
attack led by Adloff and then also on the outside.
Speaker 4 (33:23):
I've already been impressed by Jackson Reid.
Speaker 5 (33:25):
Well, they're gonna sneak those two linebackers up on the line.
Whoever the outside backers are that's usually read and also
goes number twenty or Gozens or sometimes Vinnie Hecker in
there at number twenty.
Speaker 4 (33:39):
He'll rotate in there also and Callum Reid on the
near side right.
Speaker 5 (33:42):
So they're gonna rotate those guys up and make it basically.
Speaker 3 (33:45):
A fifty two front. Robertson under center. This one's gonna
be whistled dad as you hear time out with our crowd, Mike,
did they get it?
Speaker 4 (33:57):
Did it know?
Speaker 3 (33:58):
Delay a game? Wow, that's not going to make Gus kapolcappies.
Look at Nick Robinson say hey, we have to move
a little quicker two point fifty four left to go
in the first, so they move him back five inside
the thirty to twenty nine six nothing East, Grand Rapids
over Cedars Springs second offense.
Speaker 4 (34:13):
And look for the RedHawks.
Speaker 3 (34:14):
But they've got third and fourteen now after the penalty
under centers Robinson straight t formation fake wants to throw
throws it out there incomplete. They had two men out there,
and that was dangerous because he threw it high.
Speaker 4 (34:26):
He was looking for his tight end Ryan Larkin.
Speaker 3 (34:29):
Great covers that time defensively, though, staint Homas Vinnie Hecker.
Speaker 5 (34:32):
Well, it's a good job there by Hacker number one
because he's at a disadvantage going against a tall receiver
with a lot of themenza. But he read the play well.
And the other thing too, is he gets him in
front of the sticks right. He meets him there as
they break off, so he's able to make the tackle.
Even if he throws accurate. Hecker is there to make
the tackle then stop him for the first time.
Speaker 3 (34:51):
Been impressed with East Grand Rapids in that defense has
been as advertised. Buck Gino second punt already for Avery
Umphrey standing back at his own fifteen to protect him.
Good snap, low, wobbly spiral this time a fair catch
called for. He did it early by Buck at the
thirty six. I no reason to take any risk here.
Speaker 4 (35:12):
And so with two.
Speaker 3 (35:13):
Forty four left to go in the first East Ground
Rapids are a six nothing lead. Josh Jennick's got to
be happy with his coaching staff on the start and
they go back on the offensive attack. Also, I want
to say mcewne looked really sharp, I thought, with his
wide receiving core with this wind and all in that
opening possession.
Speaker 5 (35:29):
Well for Seriar Springs, like I said, they're playing guys
at linebackers spots. Typically they run a four to four
set normally, So what they're gonna have is they're gonna
have physical guys on the inside slot receivers. So when
they run those perimeter runs that East Grand Rapids has tried,
those get shut down. But the disadvantages those guys running
routes against those linebackers and getting open in space.
Speaker 4 (35:50):
Pour down Lineman. For Cedar Springs.
Speaker 3 (35:51):
Let's see I they can get some pressure mcwn back
to pass again throwing it out there wide side with
that wind and complete it floated a little bit, but
Kas makes the catch cross the forty five out near
the midfield stripe. Just shive and at the East Grand
Rapids forty eight. That'll move the chains first down and ten.
Good job by McEwan. And there're is space right now
between the wide receivers and those defensive backs. Receiver spranks well, and.
Speaker 5 (36:15):
That's what I'm talking about Caswell getting out in space
against Dryer, Not that Dryer can't catch up to him,
but there's just not enough MOMENTU for him to get
out there. He's able to get the leverage and then
McEwan throws the ball right out of the break the saves.
He's gonna be late coming up because they have a
four wide receiver set, so he's got a hang back there,
and that's what really is making space right now. Theaset
(36:36):
Grand Rapids play calling has been supperted from.
Speaker 3 (36:39):
The right hasse two wide receivers each way, one back
of the backfield.
Speaker 4 (36:42):
He'll fake to him now.
Speaker 3 (36:42):
Mchune running right side makes a guy miss cross the
midfield stripe in the Redhawk's territory and down to the
forty five yard line. Nice pickup of seven on first down,
second and three o'clock at tears to wind by the
way up front counter Teters both Savage can't miss him.
Six y three two sixty five, Ryan Larkin and ty
lost in your defensive ends then Treyer Lamera and also
(37:05):
McClerkin and Colin brought is who.
Speaker 4 (37:06):
They want to funnel it to.
Speaker 3 (37:09):
Right now, though the linebackers have been doing a lot
more coverage than trying to make tackles on the running back.
Second down, him three by de sign hand off now
breaking a tackle when he's got a first down. Nice
heart running by both McEwan At that time it was
his running back Zach Caswell for a first down to
the RedHawks forty.
Speaker 4 (37:26):
They came in.
Speaker 5 (37:27):
They made it an eight man box with that motion.
So when they send in motion Cedar Springs bringing that
to an eight man box, that that clogged it up
a little bit, but good blocking of the left side
Caswell finds the crease, picks up five and gets the
first down.
Speaker 3 (37:42):
One left to go in the first six nothing East
Ground Rapids Pioneers in RedHawks territory again on their second
offensive possession, they'll motion man fake to buck left side
McEwan all two hundred and thirty pounds rambling inside the
thirty five down to the thirty two yard line on
the stop finally was Luke Egan, senior defensive back, but
not before a nice big gain on first down again
(38:04):
this time on the ground for eight Well.
Speaker 5 (38:07):
They bring in motion that makes numbers a little bit
more even between the tackles. They get a lead block
at the point of attack and then there's just no
support until mchoun gets into the secondary.
Speaker 3 (38:18):
In the slot, goes into the near side with Dylan
Buck second down and short. They want to go reverse,
this time turning the corner trying to get to the edge.
Got a first down, but a nice tackle that time
coming over defensively was Egan on the jetsweep reverse to
Tyler Blake moved the chains first down in ten so
opening quarter, by the way, being brought to you by
(38:39):
Straight Line Fence, the fencing company Grand Rapids with a
personal touch, offering both residential and commercial fencing projects. Call
today for your free estimate at six point six four
four three twenty five fifty or visit straight Line Fences
dot com.
Speaker 4 (38:51):
Terrific play call again there.
Speaker 5 (38:52):
They sneak Mallory down to go help in size, so
they bring him on a run blitz to that nine
technique and then they run the reverse. There's just nobody
out there, but a wonderful call by coach Addick and
his staff to reverse. It didn't get a lot, but
I tell you if they ran it against a regular set,
they probably wouldn't have got anything at all.
Speaker 3 (39:10):
Offenses rolling, remember they changed it in the offseason. Fake
down McEwen trying to get some positive cottage. Good penetration
upfield again by the defensive end Ty Lawson to force
him back into the defense. That he got help as
McEwan not much of a game there to the twenty six.
Now give him one second and nine up coming, and
(39:30):
this might be the final play of the opening quarter.
Six nothing East Grand Rapids and inside the Red Hawks
thirty here on second and long.
Speaker 5 (39:37):
Well, if there's one thing we did not expect, it
was a team to control the clock.
Speaker 4 (39:41):
That that Cedars brings.
Speaker 5 (39:42):
The East Grand Rapids has had the ball for almost
two thirds of this quarter and doing so in dominating fast.
Speaker 3 (39:49):
Yeah, Red Hawks not slowing him down. McEwan back to
pass looking looking, got time. Great job on the offensive line.
Now fleshed out of the biker went to his ride,
gonna see what he can get. Tucks and hit and
falling forward over there was Caden Dryer to make the stop,
but not before he got some positive yardage to the
twenty two. They'll spot him and that'll do it for
the opening quarter. So a big third down and five
(40:11):
coming up. We come back to start the second after
one quarter of play in this Division three pre district
in the playoffs, it's East Grand Rapid six.
Speaker 4 (40:20):
Cedar springs nothing back with.
Speaker 3 (40:22):
More here at Memorial Field after this on ninety six
to one the game Oyal Field, third down and five
for the RedHawks, twenty two. They want to swing it out,
compleat nice kickoff lock inside the twenty fallpop loose, but
he was down inside the fifteen and he's got a
first down. Little wide receiver screen out there to the
(40:42):
left side to Tyler Blake. He got a good block
I think from Buck down field to pick up the
first down and keep this drive alive.
Speaker 4 (40:49):
First in ten egr.
Speaker 5 (40:50):
Jay Ghoson's also getting a hat on somebody. They run
just kind of a flat route which turns into a
screen bucking. Ghoston's out there getting good blocks. It's two
on two, so if they just hold the blocks, Blake
is able to get the first down, and that's what happened.
Nice play is Iron out there, get a little bit
of a mismatch. They work from the left hash play fake.
Speaker 3 (41:09):
Want to swing it out now wide side again, trying
to turn it up after the catch was Tyler Blake.
He had two blockers out there, good jomping. The RedHawks
defense contained him that time. Inside the ten. He's downed
about the nine yard line and now Tyler Blaken have
to come out.
Speaker 4 (41:24):
He lost his helmet as he went down.
Speaker 5 (41:26):
That was also a very good play by mcew and
there's some pressure coming in that he did not expect
to come that quickly to able to dump the football off,
and that's where you see the maturation or the senior.
He's able to get over the unrushing lineman into the
hands of Blake, who, like you said, has to come out.
But a tremendous play there, because a lot of quarterbacks
will just try to throw it as quickly as possible
(41:47):
and they get blocked by the rusher. That was a
good throw by mckow. Jansen faling the software and for
him a que down.
Speaker 3 (41:52):
The quarterback keeper out of the pistol formation followed his
huge off fits and line of the left side at
Lofting Company gets just inside the five, short of the
four close to that first down mark are going to
be about maybe a yard short.
Speaker 4 (42:05):
Third and one just underway.
Speaker 3 (42:07):
Second quarter, six nothing East Grand Rapids Pioneers threatened to
try to make it a two score game.
Speaker 4 (42:14):
Zach Caswell the loan back of the back for the.
Speaker 3 (42:16):
Left of the kew and they've pretty much gone on
from that pistol formation with a four wide receiver.
Speaker 4 (42:22):
Look now they'll send in motion, goes in from right
to left.
Speaker 3 (42:25):
Q try to run Underneathan, but all over that that
time was the big fella Bo Savage stops him.
Speaker 4 (42:31):
But it does get enough for a first down for
mqwan on that quarterback here.
Speaker 3 (42:37):
But I think that's why they ran it just inside
the four first in goal pioneers.
Speaker 5 (42:41):
Yeah, they were not looking for much the tail of
the football in the five yard line and needed to
get to the four. So not even a yard and
mckewn is able to pick up the first down and
give him a fresh set here now for first and goal.
Speaker 3 (42:53):
So Dylan Bunck now and Asa Cox like the offensive lineman,
they're also interchangeable with who works on what side with
the wide receiver. Cox has been with Gozen's most of
this first half, but now works the far side with Buck.
Speaker 5 (43:06):
Well.
Speaker 4 (43:06):
They actually brought in Buck and Blake tight Yeah, Tyler
Blake now direct snap.
Speaker 3 (43:11):
McEwen just tried to body his way at two point
thirty six foot three down to about the two yard
line with the quarterback.
Speaker 4 (43:18):
Keeper.
Speaker 3 (43:19):
Clock continues to wind nine thirty inarticular left to go
first half.
Speaker 4 (43:22):
Yeah, actually, sorry about that.
Speaker 5 (43:23):
They brought in Jackson reed at a tight end spot right,
then brought Blake in as the h back, and then
it was Buck and Cox out there on the wide side,
stretching the defense out, not giving them backside help.
Speaker 3 (43:35):
Joe aarn Oard studio host, will get a rapid radio
scoreboard update. We'll pass along scores as we can coming
out of our breaks. McEwen, now out of the pistol formation,
we'll send the man in motion left to right, fake
at the Cox underneath the touchdown. Josh McEwan his first
one through the air, this time on the ground. Touchdown
e g R by the senior quarterback and it's twelve
(43:56):
nothing East Grand Rapids.
Speaker 5 (43:59):
Probably go for one here being the first half and
they're up two scores. Another great play call. They bring
Cox in motion, they fake jet.
Speaker 4 (44:07):
What does that do?
Speaker 5 (44:09):
Sear Springs is coming down to run plants. But what
that does is that freezes the outside contained. That means
they can't get inside help, they can't push down. And
then mcewes just one on one at six three two thirty.
That's a big missman.
Speaker 4 (44:21):
Oh they bobbled a snap again.
Speaker 3 (44:23):
Now Kline just trying to throw it to the holder
and that's picked up by Cedar Springs.
Speaker 4 (44:28):
Yeah. In high school it's dead. Yeah. So that's one
that's what I would love for them to change.
Speaker 3 (44:34):
Yeah, because Cayden Trier was off to the rights two
points yeah in college and pro And that's the one
thing that I would like to get. I know they
trying to do it for safety, but at this stage,
I think they could probably look at changing that. So
Mark you if you're listening, I'll send you the bill
for the consultation.
Speaker 5 (44:48):
We need to change that rule. We need to bring
in defensive extra point returns.
Speaker 3 (44:53):
So East Ground Rapids put six mop on the board,
had problems again with the extra point and it's nine
oh four left to go first half e GR twelve
s Theeter Springs nothing back with more after this. As
you're listening to, the drive to Ford Field wasented by
Vandalion Home Improvement right here on ninety six to one
the game.
Speaker 8 (45:12):
Join in the nine sixth one the game studios with
a Meyer scoreboard update. Elsewhere in Division one, Hudsonville over
Jennison fourteen nothing.
Speaker 4 (45:19):
He's kind what up early seven to nothing.
Speaker 8 (45:21):
On Grand Legend in Division two Byron Center all over
Ports Northern twenty six nothing already, guys, all right, thank
you Joe.
Speaker 3 (45:28):
We appreciate that Rapid Radios scoreboard update. Meanwhile, Luke ee
get another great return fielded at about the fifteen yard
line on the fly and the kickoff from Will Klein
and again just use that wedge and got a nice
push for an extra about five to ten yards. He's
out across the forty. The Red Hawks will start this
drive from their own forty four.
Speaker 4 (45:48):
The good news for RedHawks fans.
Speaker 3 (45:50):
Both extra points kind of muffed my East Grand Rapids,
so it's just a twelve nothing score. But they got
to get something going offensive for a team that puts
a lot of points up on the board.
Speaker 4 (45:58):
Buck, Yeah, they have to in some way.
Speaker 5 (46:00):
I mean they've got in the field position, they just
have not been able to get untracked offensively.
Speaker 3 (46:04):
They motion dryer out of that straight T formation. Now
the quick pitch.
Speaker 4 (46:07):
Coming to the near side. Nothing doing the.
Speaker 3 (46:10):
Carry was Noah Mallory the senior that East Grand Rapids
defense sideline. The sideline has been tenacious tonight, as we've
heard about all season long. Got across the forty five
to the forty six. They'll give him a couple. But
second down and eight and again this front seven especially
so tough, physical, they check all the boxes. But you
(46:32):
know that's all we've heard about from their opponents as well.
Speaker 5 (46:35):
Well, Cayden Ghost was getting blocked and he's still made
the tackle.
Speaker 4 (46:39):
I mean it was a one on one block. He
was the guy that made the tackle and he didn't
need any help.
Speaker 3 (46:44):
That's how well that front seventh plater and boy, they
are stacking up, challenging the offensive line for the Renhawks
to not get any push whatsoever. Is dryer over the
left side one to the forty seven and that's it.
So third and seven up, companies, we roll under eight
minutes left to go. First half. Stayed with us for
the whole Chefs of Physical Therapy halftime show scores in
more company way. Plus we've got a special guest from
(47:05):
Kids Food Basket we'll tell you about after this play.
But look at that nine guys in the box Bookchino.
Speaker 5 (47:11):
Well this one Robinson's checking off or coach Kapolka is
calling for a check.
Speaker 4 (47:16):
See what they try to do here.
Speaker 3 (47:17):
They got seven guys on the line play fake Robinson
roll into his right, kind of man out there, tryer,
it's completed EGR territory inside the thirty eight, still running
down the sideline, dragging would be tacklers. He's all the
way down inside the twenty five to the e G
on twenty three. Good throw by Robinson rolling out to
his right. And how about the run after they catch
(47:38):
by the senior Kaden Dryer.
Speaker 5 (47:40):
Well, that's a really good throw there by Robinson. Dryer
getting into the flat, gotten the leverage on the defensive backs.
You said they crowded the box. He kind of felt
like they knew that, they thought they would have to pass.
But just a really good throw there by Robinson.
Speaker 4 (47:57):
Now it opens that things up.
Speaker 3 (47:58):
Spencer shan Born the full back dive over the right side,
makes the first man miss and then he was one
on one with.
Speaker 4 (48:04):
His safety most of that first don Marker.
Speaker 3 (48:07):
How many times does a big play just kind of
put the defense on their heels a little bit?
Speaker 4 (48:12):
There? You see it?
Speaker 3 (48:12):
A nice answer or at least trying to answer here
for Cedar Springs and they've got a fresh shut of downs.
First in ten inside the EGR fifteen at the twelve
kind of like a boxing match when one guy's winning
all the points and all of a sudden he gets
opened up, get a little cut, and he's like, oh,
these got these guys can play handoff.
Speaker 4 (48:30):
Shan Borne staying with it.
Speaker 3 (48:31):
He was kind of boxed in behind his offensive lineman,
then just slid off the left side down inside the
EGR ten.
Speaker 4 (48:37):
To the eight yard line.
Speaker 3 (48:38):
So momentum shift now, Cedar Springs and how big would
an answer here be with six thirty and ticking left
to go here first half.
Speaker 5 (48:45):
And he's gonna happen to on that third down play,
Betting that they could get the pressure to Robinson before
he was able to get the throw off, good blocking
or good enough blocking by his Heeter Springs to stem
that tide. And now that big play is turning in momentum,
they've got it inside the head.
Speaker 3 (49:01):
A couple of nice runs by the junior spencer shownboard
number zero got five on that Curry handoff. Mallory right
side cuts back inside the five down close to that
first down marker at the three. I think it's gonna
be about a half yard short. Mentioned scores in more
coming up. The Rapid Radio scoreboard update with George just
moments ago, brought to you by Rapid Radios, the only
(49:21):
nationwide LG walkie talkies with no monthly fee.
Speaker 4 (49:24):
Ever great for.
Speaker 3 (49:25):
Families hunting camping mergency Houston Moore. Find out more Rapid
Radios dot com. They say, third and one buck Gino
from the EGR three for cedar spring is their deepest
penetration offensively of the night.
Speaker 4 (49:38):
Can they cap it off with a score? Robinson handoff left.
Speaker 3 (49:40):
Side dryer touchdown Cedar springs number seven from the counteraction
from right to left takes it from three yards out
to answer that east grand rapid scoring drive and it's
twelve six now Pioneers extra point up coming. Remember they've
got a very good kicker, so unlike a lot of
wing Ta teams go for two, they've got Avery Umphrey
(50:02):
as a weapon, the seedar and he'll try to tack
on the extra point here.
Speaker 4 (50:06):
A good job there by Cedar springs on that drive.
Speaker 5 (50:09):
Clearly the third down conversion gave them the momentum they needed.
Speaker 4 (50:13):
Snap was a good one.
Speaker 3 (50:14):
Hole is down, kick is up and it's good and
for Umphrey, how about this? That's forty five of forty
seven point after attempts a school record for the season
for number nineteen and with five thirty left to go
first half, our score now reads East Grand Rapids twelve
Cedar Springs seven back with more as you're listening to
the Drive to Ford Field presented by Vandalion Home Improvement
(50:37):
right here on your home for high school football ninety
six to one the game. Now that boxing matches on books.
(51:20):
You know we've seen it before. Twelve seven.
Speaker 4 (51:22):
Now East Grand Rapids over Cears Rings.
Speaker 3 (51:24):
I'm free to kick it away and it's fielded at
the six yard line. Turned his back and they do
a little starburs his East Grand Rappids.
Speaker 4 (51:31):
All of Rockford to look out.
Speaker 3 (51:32):
Tyler Blake has it across the forty forty five up
the left side line.
Speaker 4 (51:36):
One man to beat it.
Speaker 3 (51:37):
Oh got around the ankle and dropping him that time
and saving a touchdown.
Speaker 4 (51:42):
Good hustle by Ryan Larkin.
Speaker 3 (51:44):
But the old Rockford Starburs played with Ralph Munker and
Josh Shannick used him to perfection.
Speaker 4 (51:49):
Nice job by East Grand Rapids.
Speaker 3 (51:51):
RedHawks didn't know where the football and it's a big
return all the way down to the Cedars Rings thirty
five yard line.
Speaker 5 (51:58):
Now for the East Grening rapid privately the biggest drive
of the game for them offensively, have to answer Heedters Springs. Well,
they got to move up to the red teas on
this point because a tremendous play, a little bit of
trickeration on the special teams Cedars Springs loses track of
who has the football, and Blake breaks free into the
open field, and you're right, the game saver or at
least the touchdown saving tackle there by Ryan Lark and
(52:21):
otherwise Tyler Blake is dancing in the end zone.
Speaker 3 (52:23):
So you go four men deeper than normal.
Speaker 4 (52:26):
Usually there's two back there.
Speaker 3 (52:27):
Trip Hookster received it on the fly, turned his back
so that they can't see where the football is to
the kickoff team for Star Springs. Then a couple of playfakes,
and look out, here comes Tyler Blake. Now mcewe on
first down in ten, got tripped up a little bit,
not much of a game. They'll give him the thirty three,
so gain him two second and eight as we roll
towards five minutes left to go here first half, five
(52:49):
point game twelve seven, and again, if you're just tuning
in the reason scround Rappids got to twelve. It kind
of muffed both extra point attempts as far as either
a snap or a hold a little.
Speaker 4 (52:59):
Bit more then pass.
Speaker 5 (53:00):
On the last scoring drive for East Gun Rapids, then
their first might see mcceewns start to throw the ball
a little bit more here if Cedars Springs is gonna
continue to pack the box.
Speaker 3 (53:09):
Blake in motion from right to left hand off no
keeping himself as McCown big hole over the left side,
breaks a tackle inside the.
Speaker 4 (53:16):
Twenty and nfender.
Speaker 3 (53:17):
They went low and chopped him down at about the
nineteen yard line, but not before he picked up fourteen
to move the chains first to ten. Good play fake
that time on the Reid option with Zach Caswell.
Speaker 5 (53:30):
I was a tremendous fake there by mckown and that
got the linebacker inside committed and mcewns is able to
scoot it outside pick up a big gain of fourteen.
Speaker 4 (53:39):
Just really impressed with.
Speaker 5 (53:40):
This offense that East Gun Rapids has been running tonight.
It took them a little bit, but they caught their stride.
Like coach Shaddick said the pregame, they started to catch
their stride in the last three games, and so far
it's carried over.
Speaker 3 (53:52):
It's been impressive tonight, a minor speed bump really for
the Seedars defense against them, they've done what they wanted
to hand off right side and staying on his feet
for a first down inside to ten to the nine
yard line. Zach aswell, five ten, two hundred pounds. He's
a bowling ball in there. East Grand Rapids now setting
up first to goal, trying to answer.
Speaker 4 (54:11):
This score right back.
Speaker 3 (54:13):
We mentioned stay with us for the host Jepson Physical
Therapy halftime show coming up. Tonight's players have worked hard
to get their bodies ready for competition, and Hohlt Jepson
Physical Therapy wants them to stay in the game no
matter what level of activity they desire. They get patients
in within twenty four to forty eight hours. Holt Jepson
Physical Therapy restoring body, reviving spirit.
Speaker 4 (54:31):
So they're signaling in the play.
Speaker 3 (54:34):
Josh shattack kind of walking down the sidlin, Hey, I'm
gonna call.
Speaker 4 (54:37):
A timeout here.
Speaker 3 (54:38):
Yeah, but they look over everyone on the offense Freescran
Rapids and now Josh shattack could have taken time out.
Speaker 4 (54:44):
We'll keep it right here.
Speaker 3 (54:46):
Three point thirty three left to go, so it's first
in goal. Each yard bucks you know from the nine
twelve seventy st Grand Rapids, and I would say it. First,
I was like, Okay, the RedHawks offense is being stymied
by this great, deep defensive East Grand Rapids, but that
last drive got to open things up. But boy, if
they give up a touchdown here right back, you wonder
(55:06):
because there's not much time left in the first half
what that really did as far as momentum for the
Red Holes.
Speaker 5 (55:10):
And that's why I said this is probably the biggest
game of the biggest drive of the game for East
Grand Rapids, because now if they can answer this, Cedars
Springs is going to be looking at this going Okay,
I know we can play, but I mean, if these
guys are just gonna keep doing this, we're gonna be
down one or two scores all night because they've got
to find a way somehow to create a turnover or
big swinging momentum. They thought they had it on the
(55:32):
third down, but then the big kick return off the
trick play gets them in great field position and then
they just continue to dominate up front offensively. And East
Grand Rapids right now looking very impressive, and I don't
think Seedars Springs is playing that bad bred.
Speaker 4 (55:47):
I mean, they're playing a pretty decent game up front.
Speaker 5 (55:49):
It's just East Grand Rapids has done so much work
on offense and they're really dominating upfront.
Speaker 3 (55:54):
Tell you about the coaches comments with coach Chaddick on
his offense coming into this game, and boy, they've checked
the box tonight. First and goal for the nine, trying
to go wide and goz In's run down and the
helmet comes off with the defender and made the tackle.
That was number eleven Colin Gordon, the junior outside linebacker,
stops him at the six yard line, so a gain
(56:16):
of just three second and goal coming up. But one
of the things coach Shattick talked about with us as
another timeout going to be taken, this time by the
RedHawks of Cedar Springs and again we'll keep it right here,
he said. We have to sustain drives. I mean, we
kind of have to give Cedar Springs the game they
like to do. The people right back because of how
good their offense is. He goes, they score forty points.
(56:37):
He goes, we got to make sure in short this game.
They've done that tonight and so far they've cashed in.
The only problem has been the extra points.
Speaker 5 (56:45):
Well, their two scoring drive combined has been eleven minutes
and six seconds, so I mean they've done what coach
Shaddick has asked them to do. And now you're wondering, Okay,
why is Cedar Springs calling a timeout?
Speaker 4 (56:57):
Well, he's gonna.
Speaker 5 (56:58):
Rapids receives the second and half kickoff, so right now,
Gus Kapolka, I like this move because if the East
Grand Rapids even gets a field goal, they're gonna have
enough time to get this ball back and try to
make this either a one score game or even tie
it right at half. Because the East Grand Rapids is
going to get the ball with momentum to start that
second half. So Gus Kapolka playing the odds, doing the math.
(57:20):
I know he's a history teacher, but he knows that
he doesn't a pretty well. So I like this move
because not only does it maybe stop them a little
bit momentum wise, but also gives Cedar Springs enough time
to score on the way back.
Speaker 3 (57:31):
Blake in motion from right to left, fake hanned off
and they keep it with McHugh and on second and
goal from the six crashes down inside the five. They'll
give him to about to two and a half, so
third goal coming up, and I think Cedar Spring's gonna
burn another time out they will. We mentioned a special
guest coming up joining me at halftime, April Butler from
Kids' Food Basket to announce our twenty twenty five season total.
(57:54):
We wrapped up in the regular season last week our
Touchdowns for Kids campaign and you're number four. Excited to
share that with you. I will tell you our overall
goal for the four years, just for football season, because
we do Baskets for Kids as you know bud for
the basketball season, but just for the four football seasons,
twenty five thousand dollars folks. And now with what's happening
(58:14):
with the government shutdown they could go into effect tomorrow.
With everything with the food discounts, Kids Food Basket needs
your help more than ever, so I hope you stay
tuned for that interview. Will give you all the details
how you can help or even make a donations as
simple as that at Kidsfoodbasket dot org. Coming up as
a part of our holdt Cheps in Physical Therapy halftime show.
We got a lot of football to play though before then,
(58:35):
twelve seven East Grand Rapids over Cedar Springs, Week one
of the playoffs and third in goal from the two
coming up for Egre trying to add to their lead,
Tyler Blake stacked as a wing back to the right side.
How the motion man from left to right. They're gonna
run that way with mchuwn hit and not gonna get there. Boy,
it looked like he had increase. Great job at going low.
And the guy who made the play that time for
(58:58):
Cedar Springs was number sixty or the junior linebacker Jonathan Lebara.
Speaker 4 (59:02):
Well.
Speaker 5 (59:03):
Now coach Kapolka gonna burn his last time out three
minutes and fifteen seconds to go, and this is gonna
be an interesting decision for the Pioneers because they can
kick the field goal, it'll still be a one scorer game.
I mean, clearly Client has the leg for it. It's
inside the extra point distance, so that's not the problem.
But I think if you're coach Shatnick, you feel like
(59:23):
you're not gonna be able to put the game away here.
But if you can get a touchdown Brett, that's really
gonna put a crimp in the RedHawks plans because not
only will they be down two scores, but now they
will not have any timeouts when they get the ball back,
and as a running team, that's going to potentially hamper
them trying to get down the field. So I think
they're gonna go for the touchdown here. But a very
interesting decision for coach Shattuck, and I'm glad he has
(59:45):
to make it.
Speaker 4 (59:45):
And not us because we're just getting paid to watch
and he's getting paid to go. Boy, this has lived
up to what we thought right.
Speaker 3 (59:51):
Our Week one playoff matchup, brought to you by LMCU
East Grand Rapids and Cedars spring is a five point game?
Speaker 4 (59:58):
Will it be more?
Speaker 2 (59:58):
Though?
Speaker 3 (59:59):
Fourth and goal the one and the Pioneers have the
offense out there.
Speaker 5 (01:00:02):
Yeah, they've taken they've got Jackson Reid in tight or
they've taken Jackson Reid out of it. They've gone back
to the four wide receiver set, trying to spread that
Red Hawk defense out.
Speaker 3 (01:00:13):
Caswell going with a three point stance behind mc cute
out of the pistol formation and they'll fake it to
him and people thought he had it mque cappiny short.
He stopped short at the one yard line. What a
job of the Cedars Springs defense boints too bad? He
didn't give it to Caswell.
Speaker 5 (01:00:29):
Because he dove into the end zone as the league
Kaswell almost ran into the brick wall behind the end zone.
He had so much momentum. But I think Cedars Springs
hast it melt out. I think they knew. I mean,
when you're gonna have the ball that close, you want
your best player to have it. And I think offensively
running the football, Josh McEwan at six foot three, two
to thirty pounds is probably your best option. Cedars Springs
(01:00:51):
bet on that, and they hit on that one, and
they tackle him for a sweight loss, but a big
stop now, but they've got a long way to go
and no timeout.
Speaker 3 (01:01:02):
Two timeouts reminding for each yard three eleven left to
go here. First half, working from basically their own two
yard line hand off.
Speaker 4 (01:01:09):
They keep it with the full back.
Speaker 3 (01:01:11):
They keep you on us back, as I like to
call him, Spencer Shoonboard. The junior is to give him
a little room. He's out across the five, shy of
the six. Gim McGain a three second and seven clock.
Att used to whine, as Buccino mentioned it, less they
a lot of bounds or have an injury, they can't
stop the clock. But I think right now, their content
in the fact that they dodged a bullet there. Their
(01:01:32):
defense came up with a goal line stand to get
the football backs.
Speaker 5 (01:01:36):
It's almost a double edged story because now Augus is like, boy,
I wish I had some timeouts, but they made a
big stop and that's a really could be a swing
point in this game.
Speaker 3 (01:01:45):
Mallory tried to turn the corner going why with two
lead blocks running from left to right of that straight
T formation on the handoff from Robinson does turn the corner,
it's going to be short of the first down out
to the ten yard line.
Speaker 4 (01:01:58):
Oh, I thought he had more yardage than that, so
third and two coming up.
Speaker 3 (01:02:02):
And he did stop the clock because he got out
of bounds with two thirty left to go.
Speaker 4 (01:02:07):
Boy, I thought he was out close to the first
down mark.
Speaker 3 (01:02:09):
Well, I think it was a good spot. He was
running hard and he kept running it when he was
out of bounds. But I think pretty good John by
the official. He don't see Gus Kapolka arguing too much either, No,
which he would in that case because it was on
his sideline. Yeah, under centers Robinson straight T formation, tight
split by the offensive line, hand off.
Speaker 4 (01:02:26):
Mallory going wide again. Did he get it? This time?
Speaker 3 (01:02:30):
He turned the corner, but there was a lot of
running room. He was run out by Blake and I
think he did get it. He needed too, got three,
moved the chain, stopped the clock first in ten to
twenty six left to go first half again, scores and
more coming up with Joe Aarren's Colebania back there in
the score center as well, and don't forget if you
want to check in over on.
Speaker 4 (01:02:49):
One oh seven mus the moves. That's one O seven.
Speaker 3 (01:02:51):
Point nine FM along the Lake Shore Game of the
week there with Jase Nutting and Tom Kendra Motus Shores
and muskeget.
Speaker 5 (01:02:58):
I think if your seiters bring it some answered break
tendency and throw on an early down.
Speaker 3 (01:03:02):
From the right, hash inside hand off, big breaker, breaking
a tackle and he's got a lead blocker. Look out
cuts back of the forty. He's off to the races
in the EJR. Territory and finally run down from behind.
Want to run by Luke Egan the senior and who
wasn't who saved the touchdown for East Grand Rapids.
Speaker 4 (01:03:21):
He could hustle that time by the linebacker.
Speaker 3 (01:03:23):
Cayden goes it. Wow, Gozen doesn't catch him. Egan was
we saw him on the kick returns flying down the
sideline play action. Now Robinson wants to sling it out
there and knocked the way defensively. Good job by Tyler Blake.
The intendany receiver was Kayden Dryer that time at.
Speaker 4 (01:03:41):
The Jr thirty. Well, they go against the tendency.
Speaker 5 (01:03:44):
Finally they break it in Tyler Blake with a tremendous
defensive play. Dryer head the leverage on the sideline. Blake
was behind him, and then a great maneuver gets in front,
knocks it down and almost came up with the interception.
Speaker 4 (01:03:58):
Second down.
Speaker 5 (01:03:59):
Now, but this key for the Red Hawks is they've
stopped the clock almost every time.
Speaker 4 (01:04:03):
Yeah, they have run a play in this drive.
Speaker 3 (01:04:05):
How about the quick hitter though, and Egan he is
quick to get from first gear to third gear. Yeah, well,
I mean in the wing tea that tramp will hurt you, now, malloy.
They break it inside handoff counteraction inside the thirty god
runner up inside the fifteen ten far They're not gonna
catch him. Cayden Dryer takes it from forty yards out
of the counteraction untouched, and the RedHawks now have the
(01:04:29):
lead thirteen to twelve with the extra point up coming.
Speaker 4 (01:04:32):
Well, how things quickly have changed.
Speaker 5 (01:04:34):
The scrind Rapids a goal line stand by Cedar Springs
and then ninety eight yards do the Red Hawks go? Clearly,
two of those plays make up the bulk of that
that yardage. There's still two minutes left on the court.
I mean, now, if you're scaring rappids, you're thinking, okay,
well that's that's stunk. But we got three timeouts and
(01:04:55):
two minutes to go.
Speaker 3 (01:04:56):
Avery, I'm free on to track on the extra points
out of the hold of mister Egan, and it is
up and good as you can hear the RedHawks fans
coming to their feet across the way. So two minutes
exactly left to go here first half and Cedar Springs
now has taken.
Speaker 4 (01:05:13):
Their first lead of the ball game.
Speaker 3 (01:05:15):
They leaded fourteen to twelve over rees Grand Rapids time
out of the field.
Speaker 4 (01:05:18):
We'll come back with more.
Speaker 3 (01:05:19):
As you're listening to the Drive to Ford Field presented
by Vandaloon Home Improvement. Right here on ninety six to
one the game, I'm free with the high short kickoff,
they go starburst again, this time to Blake, but better
coverage by the Cedar Springs gickoff team as they corral
him and stop him right at the thirty yard line.
Speaker 4 (01:05:39):
Holy fireworks, Batman on Halloween.
Speaker 3 (01:05:41):
Here in the second quarter, What a comeback by Cedar
Springs Caden Dryer if you're just tuned in his second
rushing touchdown of the night. That one went forty yards
in a short amount of time, and just like that,
Cedar Springs has their first lead of the game, fourteen
to twelve with one fifty four left to go here
in the second quarter.
Speaker 5 (01:05:57):
I mean it all has hinged upon that third down
version on the first scoring drive from Cedar Springs. After that,
it has been almost all RedHawks all the time. And
now East Grand Rapids here at home, has to get
their bearings, get into the locker room, maybe with the lead,
or at least with some momentum.
Speaker 3 (01:06:13):
McQueen wants to throw out the flats get covered, so
the Red Hawks, bringing some pressure, now rolls out to
us right, He'll just throw that one away.
Speaker 4 (01:06:20):
Stop the clock.
Speaker 3 (01:06:20):
With one forty five left to go incomplete East Grand
Rapids with two timeouts, RedHawks burned all their timeouts, remember
on that goal line stand, But how about that they
get a score. East Grand Rapids looks like they're gonna answer.
They get a goal line stand, stopping mcuna on the
one yard line, and then as you said, basically go
ninety eight ninety nine yards if you will on that
last drive in a hurry, and now trying to get
(01:06:43):
a stop because East Grand Rapids not only has the
football now, but because they deferred on the coin toss.
We'll start the second half with it.
Speaker 4 (01:06:50):
Well.
Speaker 5 (01:06:51):
Two runs up the middle, getting the best of East
Grand Rapids, which is not something we've seen yet tonight
until that drive.
Speaker 3 (01:06:58):
Two wide receivers each way. The pistol formation wants to
throw down the middle of field. Oh, he had Tyler
Blake who looked like he short armed it at the
Redhawk's forty five yard line. Beautiful throw right over the top.
And I don't know what happened there if you just
misjudge it. I don't know if you necessarily had to
jump like he did. But boy, Tyler Blake, he'd still
be running I think right now. Yeah, it just looked
(01:07:20):
a little awkward. Not sure exactly what happened there. But nonetheless,
I mean, that's a beautiful throw by mcewn. Write what
you want there up the seam, and you're right. I
think Blake is probably still running if he catches that ball.
Unfortunately it falls in and complete and now a.
Speaker 5 (01:07:36):
Big third down, And if you're East Grind Rapids, you
gotta be thinking, boy, we gotta get something here.
Speaker 4 (01:07:42):
Because we don't get what we don't want to give
the ball right back to the.
Speaker 3 (01:07:44):
Zerier Springs again with time on the claw from the
middle of the field, two wide receivers each way, one
back of the back of mckewan, back to pass sets
going over the top.
Speaker 4 (01:07:52):
Got a man out there, oh man, there was no
one there.
Speaker 3 (01:07:57):
As far as the coverage, and he had buck but
he aired it just a little bit too much over
Zeeddy and complete and now to your point, one thirty five.
Speaker 4 (01:08:06):
Left to go.
Speaker 3 (01:08:07):
He scran Rapids fourth and ten of their own territory,
gonna have to put the football away.
Speaker 5 (01:08:11):
I mean, those are two beautiful play calls. The first
one Blake just kind of misses that. The second one
mcewn throws it at about a yard too far, the
margin for air very thin.
Speaker 4 (01:08:21):
But because of those two incompletions.
Speaker 5 (01:08:25):
Now Sediar Springs is gonna get the ball back and
probably get the ball back again in the first half.
Speaker 3 (01:08:30):
Senior Dylan bunk Buck excuse me, back to punch stand
his own fifteen the left foot or takes his snap,
not much pressure, gets it away, kind of dies in
the wind. Egan goes down on a knee to feel
the catch out of the air. Dark ketch called for
in made at the Red Hawk's thirty eight yard line.
Now we saw what they did last possession with about
(01:08:51):
a ninety eight or ninety nine yard field out of them.
Speaker 4 (01:08:54):
This one much shorter.
Speaker 3 (01:08:56):
They don't how many timeouts, but they didn't last time
and they've still got one twenty eight left on the clock.
So I'll tell you what, how quickly Roles reverse the
East Grand Rapids defense. Now on their heres a little bit?
Can they get a stopped?
Speaker 5 (01:09:07):
Yeah, And what they're gonna have to watch out for
is Cedar Springs getting out to the boundary early in
the last series trying to stop the clock, and that
kind of got East Ground Rapids leaning a little bit,
and then they got hit hard with a couple of
traps inside and that's what caused the big plays. So
if your East Ground Rapids got to maintain discipline down
in the trenches, can't leave your gap because big runs
(01:09:29):
can happen tight splits.
Speaker 3 (01:09:30):
Robinson now pitching it from under center, trying to go wide,
showing board lowers his shoulder knocked out of bounds by
blake Out near the forty five yard line.
Speaker 4 (01:09:40):
Again, that'll stop the clock.
Speaker 3 (01:09:41):
Smart my gusket Polk and Cedar Springs trying to run
everything wide so the running backs can get out of
bound since they don't have those timeouts. Fourteen twelve Cedars
Springs over EGR. What a heck of a football game.
Now the other side of this district bracket, folks, it's
kind of an All RCA like we see with the
All Oka Reddit Division one bracket here in DEV three,
because you got Kennewa Hills hosting Coopersville.
Speaker 5 (01:10:03):
Well, they thought they were gonna have in All River
City's a Lions bracket because roll got dropped down right
into the other districts and so now East Gren Halfas
replaces them.
Speaker 3 (01:10:12):
But what a football game so far? Just tremendous playoff football.
Here's Dryer on that counteraction play where they scored on
last time and look at him fight for extra yardage.
Speaker 4 (01:10:21):
I'll tell you what.
Speaker 3 (01:10:22):
The quarterbacks and running backs tough customers tonight against two
good defenses. Getting extra yardage me yards after contact has
been amazing. Buck Gino and Dryer showing if they're across
the midfield stripe quickly up over the football first in ten.
Now for the EGR forty seven play fake, Robinson has
his hip around the right side.
Speaker 4 (01:10:40):
And not gonna get much that time.
Speaker 3 (01:10:42):
Good job of the defense coming over the defensively to
make the play once again was Cayden Gozen. He's been
all over the field tonight defensively number fifty four.
Speaker 5 (01:10:51):
Well, now they're gonna have to start thinking about maybe
throwing the football with under fifty seconds to go.
Speaker 3 (01:10:58):
Block winding second down and ten counteraction.
Speaker 4 (01:11:02):
There it is. We just saw it.
Speaker 3 (01:11:04):
Caden's Dryer goes and wrestling him down looking for some help.
We finally got a dead time from Benny Hecker, the
defensive back.
Speaker 4 (01:11:12):
And now what do we have. I think they.
Speaker 3 (01:11:16):
Moved the football as a flags there's a flag down
though there is Yeah, I didn't see the flag. Was
it thrown in the backfield. It's in the defensive backfield.
I believe it may have been after the play. We're
gonna find out now. I see it now at the
thirty eight yard line, so we'll see what we got here.
Speaker 4 (01:11:34):
Guska.
Speaker 3 (01:11:35):
Polka wants an explanation. Defense laid hit against the Pioneers.
Oh boy, Josh Shaddock not gonna like that one. That's
a costly penalty because balls already at the forty one
yard line.
Speaker 4 (01:11:52):
They're gonna mark this off.
Speaker 3 (01:11:53):
Fifteen partner, thirty one seconds left to go here.
Speaker 5 (01:11:57):
Yeah, I mean I saw a couple of players tangled up.
I didn't get full view of what happened.
Speaker 3 (01:12:02):
Yeah, this marks it all the way down to the
twenty sixth of East Grand Rapids.
Speaker 5 (01:12:05):
Well, and that also now brings Humphrey's leg into play right.
Speaker 3 (01:12:11):
It's kind of a cross wind for him, but he's
shown the leg. He's got it from his reigne. He's
had a forty hour earlier this season, which was a
Cedar Spring School record. First down and ten one back
split out to the right. Now they'll motion a man,
so they go slot that way. Robinson going to the
right out of the pistol, fired incomplete great defense.
Speaker 4 (01:12:33):
Knocking it away.
Speaker 3 (01:12:35):
He was looking for his tight end that time, but
Callum Reid, the senior linebacker making the play, knocking it
incomplete for EGR.
Speaker 4 (01:12:43):
Kind of going to a little bit of an odd formation.
Is there a penalty flag? Yeah? I think they were.
Speaker 3 (01:12:48):
They might get Cedar Springs for illegal formation because they
ran the slot receiver out there, but everybody but the
center was recessed, so they were like a yard almost
a yard and a half back, and I think they
might have gone too far.
Speaker 4 (01:13:04):
It's gonna be against Cedar Springs. No, oh, it was not. Oh,
they were looking for a blockdown field.
Speaker 3 (01:13:14):
Okay, I thought, maybe I gotta reset it at the
twenty six Well.
Speaker 5 (01:13:18):
I mean, if there's a block down field on a pass,
I mean it's either going to be passing your fears
or illegal man down field.
Speaker 4 (01:13:27):
Right.
Speaker 3 (01:13:28):
They wave off the penalty nonetheless, and here we go,
twenty six seconds left to go first half, fourteen twelve.
Speaker 4 (01:13:33):
Cedar Springs would a turn in the second quarter. They've
got the.
Speaker 5 (01:13:36):
Foot and they still may have to go to the
air Brent, because with only twenty six seconds and no timeouts,
very hard to get to the boundary.
Speaker 3 (01:13:43):
How about this Cedar Springs out of the pistol formation,
they move one of the backs out to the wing
back back to pass probams.
Speaker 4 (01:13:47):
Look out, Oh, is he.
Speaker 3 (01:13:49):
Tattooed coming off the edge that time and laying a
lick on him as Brodie Marlowe the senior linebacker.
Speaker 4 (01:13:56):
Wow, a big loss too.
Speaker 3 (01:13:59):
On the sack back to the thirty six and o'clock
is running to spike it under center Robinson than they
will was seven seconds left board. They lost a lot
of time. That's not what you want to do, is
you know. But you know with no timeouts, I mean,
I know, give credit to Marlowe, but for Robinson, you almost.
Speaker 5 (01:14:15):
Got to get rid of that if he he had
Mallory on the safety valve, but he just did not
take a look over there. And by the time he
may have thought about it, oh, Marlowe was coming in
full steam and Robinson just could not get rid of it.
And the other thing is because everybody ran deep routes, right,
he got sacked ten yards behind the lion of scrimmage.
Speaker 4 (01:14:33):
Everybody else is downfield.
Speaker 5 (01:14:34):
They lost a lot of time just trying to get
everybody back to the line of scrimmage and to get set.
Speaker 4 (01:14:38):
So that's why they lose it there. They looked back
and said, what happened to our quarterback? Why? Why is
he on the ground running on his ear hole?
Speaker 3 (01:14:45):
I mean, what a hit by Marlowe. I mean he
just came got the way, get a full charge off
the edge near side.
Speaker 4 (01:14:53):
And now Cedar Spring's taking too long. I think that's
probably I think the US will take it. I was
gonna say, you might. I mean, he can he can
run a play.
Speaker 5 (01:15:04):
What's the difference between thirty six and forty one, especially
for an offense that does not throw the ball downfield,
likes Theeter Springs. If it was East Grind Rapids, it
might be a little bit different. But for Cedars Springs,
there's not many forty yard plays in their play because
coach Josh Ye is gonna be.
Speaker 3 (01:15:18):
Like, okay, well they came out a two wide set,
so you know they're gonna try some type of hail Mary.
Speaker 4 (01:15:22):
There's one play basically gonna be left here.
Speaker 3 (01:15:25):
I think Guska Polka might rethink this because of the
fact that if you don't take all the seven seconds right,
you're gonna give East Grind Rapids an opportunity with the
Queen's arm to at least try to try some type.
Speaker 5 (01:15:37):
Of trick play, right, it's got to I mean, this
is supposed to be a long developing play to get
downfield unless you decide to throw it quickly to the
side and maybe get some side of hook and lateral
or some other type of trick play.
Speaker 4 (01:15:49):
But that's again, that's very risky, I think, and.
Speaker 3 (01:15:52):
I don't think they have enough time to you to
do a down in alt penron try to set up
a field.
Speaker 5 (01:15:55):
No, I don't think they do either. Well, it's fourth down,
so yeah, that's true.
Speaker 4 (01:15:58):
That's true.
Speaker 5 (01:15:58):
They'd have to go very far down and very far
out to get it, which probably doesn't have seven seconds
worth of time. So this is when I think if
your gus, I think you just tell the quarterback.
Speaker 4 (01:16:08):
Now he's gonna come out with the punt team. He's
got help free out there. Yep. I think that's what
I'm saying.
Speaker 3 (01:16:12):
I mean, with everything considered, if you're Guska Polk, you're
gonna be saying, hey, we're.
Speaker 5 (01:16:16):
Up to Well, if I'm these grand Rappens, I know
I don't need to return it, so I'm just gonna
play punt safe. They're gonna have Dylan buck kind of
somewhat almost in the.
Speaker 3 (01:16:26):
Area a snappadavi, I'm free, He's is gonna kick it
up in the air, trying to knock it down like
a chip shot inside the twenty hits it about the
sixteen takes a favorable JR. Bounce and that will run
off the clock on the first half. Well, kind of
what we thought. In a big second quarter for the RedHawks.
Give them the momentum and the lead heading to the
(01:16:46):
break after one half of play here in this free
District Division three matchup with the playoffs, it's Cedar Springs
fourteen East Grand Rapids twelve. Stay with us, We're gonna
head back to the studios after the break for the
host chefs and Physical.
Speaker 4 (01:16:58):
Therapy halftime show.
Speaker 3 (01:17:00):
We've got an interview coming up with April Butler from
Kids Food Basket and Scores and more with our own
Joe Aeron after this on ninety six to one the game,
Welcome back live to Memorial Field. At halftime, as you
heard Joe Aaron mentioned, it's Cedar Springs fourteen East Grand
Rapids twelve and both teams have made their way back
(01:17:21):
onto the plane surface warming up for the second half kickoff.
Speaker 4 (01:17:24):
Before we get to that, though.
Speaker 3 (01:17:26):
Great job by Joe Air and the crew giving you
all those scores, and we'll have a mier scoreboard show
an abbreviated edition for the playoffs coming up after our
discount or postgame show tonight.
Speaker 4 (01:17:36):
I'll kick it over to my partner now.
Speaker 3 (01:17:37):
But GINO fourteen to twelve a little bit deceiven if
you're just tuning in. Great ball game, as we expected,
But boy, it was all East Grand Rapids in that
opening quarter, and then what a momentum shifted?
Speaker 4 (01:17:47):
Really all Sedar Springs in that second quarterbuck Well.
Speaker 5 (01:17:49):
I think it was the third down and seven conversion
that kind of broke open the floodgates. If they don't
get that bright, I think we're talking about a completely
different football game.
Speaker 4 (01:17:58):
But we're not. We're talking out the one that's in
front of us.
Speaker 5 (01:18:01):
Theedar Springs gripped momentum from the Pioneers and then would
not let it go.
Speaker 4 (01:18:06):
It was twelve to nothing Pioneers.
Speaker 5 (01:18:08):
They opened the scoring the nineteen yard touchdown passed from
Josh mcceewn to Tyre Blake. They missed the pat and
it was six to nothing Pioneers after one. The second
touchdown Josh McCown from three yards out, capping a twelve
play drive. Another failed PAT, but at that point it
kind of felt immaterial the way the East Guard Rapis
was playing twelve nothing Pioneers, but then converting on third
(01:18:30):
and seven, and then that drive capped by a three
yard touchdown run, the first of two for Caden Dryer,
then a goal line stand fourth and one, Josh McCown
stood up at the goal line, and then Cedar Springs
goes ninety eight yards forty of those, the last of
that Caden Dryer into the end zone for his second
(01:18:51):
touchdown of the game. I'm free as the pat and
that's where we stand right now. Cedar Spring's fourteen East
Grand Rapids twelve.
Speaker 4 (01:19:00):
First half scoring summary.
Speaker 3 (01:19:01):
It's brought to you by MKD Funeral Homes, every story,
every moment, every day since nineteen thirty seven through four generations,
that respective family tradition with now eight locations in West
Michigan to serve you.
Speaker 4 (01:19:12):
That's MKD Funeral Homes in fuck Gino.
Speaker 3 (01:19:14):
That quickly before the second half kickoff leads us into
adjustments in the locker room for both coaches both sides.
Our vandalon home improvement keys to the second half.
Speaker 5 (01:19:22):
I think East Grand Rapids did a really nice job
of balancing the pass and run in their first drive,
a little bit run heavy in the second drive, and
then the third drive almost exclusively on the ground. I
think for them to be successful, they have to get
back to that almost even split. I'm not saying Josh
mcchewn's got a yolo the ball down the field every
third play, but those short passes they can get leverage
(01:19:45):
against the linebackers of Cedar Springs. That was what the
success was early for them. They need to get back
to that here in this half. For Cedar Springs, what
they have to do is they have to continue to
press the issue. They need to heap the ball. They've
won the field position battle so far. I know they
had a ninety eight yard drive, but they've had good
(01:20:06):
field position outside of that drive. So if they can
keep that trend, continuing their offensive, they can get on tracked,
will have a lot less yardage to cover and they
can cash in from there well.
Speaker 3 (01:20:17):
And I think one of the adjustments that obviously gus
Ka polki Is staff were talking about on special teams
do they kick it deep here? Because of the Starbars
play four guys back deep at the ten yard line.
Averyumphrey to approach low line driving kick. This one tougher
to handle on a bounce at about the thirteen yard line,
coming near side that it was. Asa Cox bounced it
back out to his right. Good return, but not as
(01:20:38):
big as we start with the potential of the Starburs
to bust it wide open across the thirty and they're
gonna up end him at the thirty four yard line.
Speaker 4 (01:20:46):
So first and ten there your keys to the second half.
Speaker 3 (01:20:48):

Speaker 5 (01:21:04):
He's gonna happen with decent field position to start here,
we'll see what they come out with.
Speaker 4 (01:21:08):
Two wide receivers each way.
Speaker 3 (01:21:11):
Mister mckun at quarterback out of the pistol formation, one
back to his left. They'll go design quarterback keeper. It
was effective, but cedars Springs did a better job as
they went through the half, and that time short gain
across the thirty five to the thirty seven yard line
give them three before we was up into their first
guy to them, Aiden McClerkin, the senior linebacker.
Speaker 5 (01:21:30):
Well, and this is where they're going to have to start.
I think throwing the football a little bit more. I
know Josh McCown is the horse that got you here,
so to speak.
Speaker 4 (01:21:38):
But they really had.
Speaker 5 (01:21:40):
Success against Cedar Springs early in that first half throwing
the football short passes, getting them open in space.
Speaker 4 (01:21:46):
I think they have to go back to that to
have success. Man in motion, Tyler Blake. They faked the
jet sweep.
Speaker 3 (01:21:51):
Now swing it out to him two blockers downfield and
he gets the edge across the forties short of the
first down marker run out over there defensively by Luke Egan.
But that was like a little wide receiver bubble screen
handoff though, just a simple pass out in the flats.
But you and turned and fired, and Blake had full
speed because he was the motion man on that plane.
Speaker 5 (01:22:10):
They get the jet motion going, that gives them numbers
on the outside, good blocks down field, but Cedars Springs
was able to drive him out of bounds before the
line of the game.
Speaker 3 (01:22:19):
Credit the Pioneers quickly up over the football, caught Cedar
Springs a little off guard there, quick snap of McEwan
on the quarterback keeper gets the first down, flows his
way out to the forty five yard line. First in
Danny Giard and just like they started the ballgame. Remember
these sustained offensive drives on one right now, but they
trail by two this time fourteen twelve.
Speaker 4 (01:22:39):
If your east girding rapids, you don't have to go
high tempo.
Speaker 5 (01:22:42):
But that time they get over the football, don't let
Cedars Springs get set. Mckewn's able to plow over right
guard for a first down.
Speaker 3 (01:22:49):
Single coverage out on the wide receivers by the RedHawks.
They've got four down line and two linebackers. Then one
deep safety. McEwan fakes the little swing out pas wots
to go deeper the same he's over there and there's
the interception by Egan at the thirty five.
Speaker 4 (01:23:03):
Stays on his feet running up the near sideline, got.
Speaker 3 (01:23:05):
Some blockers into each ofr territory at the forty yard line.
Speaker 4 (01:23:09):
What a game number four is happen for Cenar Springs.
That's Luke Egan, the senior with the int.
Speaker 5 (01:23:15):
Well and that time mcewn looked the safety off, but
when he turned to the other side, he just didn't
see Egan playing kind of a deep center field there. Yeah,
it's a bracket coverage and mckewn's got to recognize that.
Speaker 4 (01:23:28):
Instead, he tries to.
Speaker 5 (01:23:29):
Air it out over there and Egan just comes underneath
the play. Now he's throwing it against that win. The
wind has died down a lot since the beginning of
the game, still a slate breeze going across the field,
though Brett so is to throw a little bit into
the wind. Mcewn just never saw Egan there and he
throws the interception.
Speaker 3 (01:23:46):
I think it's exactly right partner. He kind of faked
it out and then assumed that the guy had his
one on one coverage beat deep. But Egan was there
to help out. Now, handoff Kate Dryer over the left side,
picking his way through that secondary inside to thirty, stealing
his feet down to the twenty six yard line.
Speaker 4 (01:24:02):
Here come the RedHawks first.
Speaker 3 (01:24:04):
Down in ten gate of fourteen, and again they lead
it by two.
Speaker 4 (01:24:09):
And how big was that?
Speaker 3 (01:24:10):
You want to get a stop right with your defense
to start the second half. They got an ant in
a nice return to set up their offense with the
best field position starting tonight.
Speaker 5 (01:24:19):
Well, the turnovers be what you've got to prevent in
the East Grander Rapids going first drive, giving that turnover
away and also giving up field position. So two things
you don't want to do if you're playing against Peter
Spring as you give him. So just putting themselves behind
the eight ball.
Speaker 3 (01:24:35):
A little bit, Nick Robinson, junior quarterback under cent or
handoff try or number seven, they're gonna feed the horse,
three year varsity player, but stopped right at the line
of scrimmage and there with the penetration on that front
five or six, if you will, once again, is Jackson reed,
and they're gonna say lost yard. It's back outside the
twenty six to the twenty seven second and eleven clock
(01:24:57):
winds towards nine to thirty left to third quarter. I
tell you what partner, good call by you.
Speaker 4 (01:25:03):
You like this game. Before we even knew with.
Speaker 3 (01:25:05):
Cedar Springs, we hadn't seen East Grand Rapids yet we
got a Donny Broke on our hands.
Speaker 5 (01:25:08):
Well, and Cedar Springs now kind of feels like they
got the momentum from the first half and it's carried over.
Speaker 4 (01:25:14):
This one feels like a really big drive.
Speaker 5 (01:25:16):
If they get a touchdown here East Caron Rappens could
be in trouble.
Speaker 3 (01:25:19):
Dry are They motion out from the right half and
now he's the edge. Got a lead block for Mallory
on the quick pitch wide side of the field out
like East Grand Rapids back in the day with George
Barcheski Guska Polka pulling them all out, and he's most.
Speaker 4 (01:25:33):
Of that first down markers. He scoots.
Speaker 3 (01:25:35):
Mallory got some speed to get to the outside inside
the eg R twenty down to the eighteen about a
yard short third Noil called a short two.
Speaker 4 (01:25:45):
In the red zone here for the red Hag. This
would be interesting because they're in unfreeze range.
Speaker 3 (01:25:48):
We're gonna get a quick to the line though, Yeah,
quick snap hand off Kitton drying number seven. He was
just grabbed and pulled back like a bear mauling someone
that time and that was big number seventy five.
Speaker 4 (01:25:59):
We were talking about grand Adloff. This guy's got.
Speaker 3 (01:26:02):
Division one offers, folks, and he is impressive. One of
eight senior starters on this defense. When you look at
his size, I mean he's sixty three to two sixteen.
Speaker 4 (01:26:12):
Only a junior.
Speaker 3 (01:26:15):
Fourth down and one coming up for Cedar Springs from
the left hash They work from the sixteen yard line
of eg ARC and the Pioneers answered with the stop
of their own. Robinson under center, double tight end set
straight t formation behind him, they go quarterback keeper.
Speaker 4 (01:26:30):
He might need a push, and I think he's got
it with the second effort.
Speaker 3 (01:26:34):
I think he had a tight end come over and
helped push him forward that time in ty Lawson, Well, I.
Speaker 5 (01:26:39):
Tell you I thought they might have gotten the play
before with Dryer. I know he got ripped back by Adloff,
but it looked like he may have gotten the line
of the game. They mark him short and fortunately for
the RedHawks they're able to pick up that fourth down
on the second effort.
Speaker 4 (01:26:53):
There is a big injury up front.
Speaker 3 (01:26:54):
Another big lineman out both sides for East Grand Rapids
is Cole burt Key. He's a senior six to seventy
five and he got hurt Wednesday before Senior Night of
the last game of the regular season, so a tough
one for EGR. They'd love to have him in there
along with ad Law. First down in ten we roll
under eight minutes left to go. Third quarter, RedHawks in
(01:27:15):
the red zone inside handoff shown born and he is
stuck right at the line of scrimmage. A good job
of the penetration at East Grand Rapids front seven coming
up off the bottom of the pile that time was
number fifty two for EGR. That's James Preston, the junior
defensive lineman. Also over there was Callum Reid.
Speaker 5 (01:27:33):
Well, now, if your East Grand Rapids you got time
to stand tall here and showIn Moore.
Speaker 4 (01:27:37):
It's a little shaken up. He's trying to get a shot.
Speaker 5 (01:27:40):
He's trying to get stretched out, and they're gonna bring
an Egan Kuska Poul because like you come.
Speaker 4 (01:27:44):
Over here and yeah, just take a breather.
Speaker 3 (01:27:48):
I mean, he took a couple of shots. It's a
hard hitting football game, folks. Second and ten straight t
formation this time left half going wide right. That's Mallory
turns the corner and gets his legs taken out from
underneath him as he got inside the fifteen down.
Speaker 4 (01:28:01):
About the twelve.
Speaker 3 (01:28:03):
Coming over there defensively to make them play that time
was Jacob Goes in from his safety.
Speaker 4 (01:28:09):
Position number four.
Speaker 5 (01:28:11):
Well, when they they spotted, Yeah, when they when Seniars
Frings has tried to get out to the boundary, you
can see the pursuit from East Guaranton Rappids. It's been tremendous,
but that's a really long run there and ghosts. Even
though the good effort, just a lot of speed by
Mallory to the boundary.
Speaker 4 (01:28:26):
Is still able to pick up the four yards. It's
like Egan is in there at the fullback.
Speaker 3 (01:28:30):
Instead of showing Born, they go Caden's dryer counteraction right
there defensively.
Speaker 1 (01:28:35):
Was Jackson Reid.
Speaker 3 (01:28:36):
Well, he's been tremendous number eighty one the far signed
defensive end.
Speaker 4 (01:28:40):
They're gonna lose yardage back to the eleventh, fourth and
six coming up for the RedHawks. What do you do here?
You got umphree. That's why I say that.
Speaker 3 (01:28:50):
I mean, I think I would go for the points,
but I think gust is gonna.
Speaker 4 (01:28:55):
Go for it here. And this is we saw that
East Garnon Arabbits pass up a field goal.
Speaker 3 (01:28:59):
And remember remember Will Kline is a good kick of
rescar happens when I say that this would make it a
five point game right here, we go Nick Robinson under center,
straight t formation, double tight ends set playfake. Oh, look
at Robinson. Couple of the hippits, one the ten.
Speaker 4 (01:29:12):
He'll walk into the end zone.
Speaker 3 (01:29:14):
How about that on fourth and six from the twelve
yard line, he faked the handoff. There was no one
on the outside of the junior number one. Nick Robinson
takes it in for six more for the Red Hawks.
Speaker 5 (01:29:27):
Well, that's just a failure on the back side of
the defense. I mean, if you're that linebacker that's opposite
the play side, at least the play fake side gott
to stay home. And everybody flowed to the football. They
thought it was gonna be Egan. I think that was
Egan going out to the boundary just totally crash out
and there was just no I mean, Robin, you and
I could have made that one snap is a good one.
Speaker 3 (01:29:49):
On the extra point attempt, Egan gets it down umfree Number.
Speaker 4 (01:29:52):
Nineteen puts it up and in.
Speaker 3 (01:29:54):
And how about this biggest lead of the night for
the RedHawks with five point fifty nine have to go
here at Memorial Field. It's Cedar Springs twenty one East
Grand Rapids twelve back with more after this on ninety
six to one.
Speaker 4 (01:30:07):
The game.
Speaker 3 (01:30:15):
Back here in East Grand Rapids Pioneers have some work
to do. Bret Pakeita Buck Gino, Joe Aaron, third member
of our crew, cole Bania working in the score center,
scores and more as we go through the second half,
coming your way.
Speaker 4 (01:30:27):
But we'll recap that redock scoring.
Speaker 3 (01:30:29):
Trive to now make it a nine point advantge for
Cedar Springs twenty one to twelve. Mckewan and company back
on the offensive attack hand off now as they fake
the handoff and go reverse jets sweep to Tyler Blake.
Number One's been busy tonight across the twenty five. He
scoots out to the twenty six yard line. Give him
four second and six. No panic yet.
Speaker 5 (01:30:50):
It's still a two score game. But that's where the
extra points now started to matter. Exactly one score game really,
but because of the two miss extra points, now it's
a nion point spread. I like the reverse call there
just kind of keeps the backside of the play honest.
But I think mcewane again, the short passing game was working,
and not sure why they've gone away from it, but
(01:31:11):
it was working.
Speaker 4 (01:31:12):
New back in the backfield now they tried to swing
out to Blake and all over it was Kayden Dryer.
He drops for a loss.
Speaker 3 (01:31:17):
Back inside the twenty five to the twenty four Cedar
Springs all over that wide receiver screen.
Speaker 4 (01:31:22):
To the wide side that time.
Speaker 3 (01:31:23):
So now third and long come up for egr by
the way, taking in from twelve yards down himself around
the left edge was Nick Robinson, the junior quarterback for
Cedar Springs. To make it a twenty one to twelve
game scoring update. Brought to you by Sporting You. You
think it, they link and they have what you need
to look your best. Find out more at sporting the
Letter you dot com. Big third down at eight now
(01:31:44):
keeping their own territory. Mcwen fakes the swing pass out
a lookout. Buck is open, man slipped down. He's off
to the races. Forty thirty five thirty coming from the
backside is Dryer and he's gonna drag him down inside
the RedHawks twenty big Cats that time on the post batter,
the safety fell down and Dylan Buck was off to
the races.
Speaker 4 (01:32:04):
I mean, that's the pass that you want there now.
Egan falling down.
Speaker 5 (01:32:07):
Was not part of the bargain, but that's the play
that has been there consistently for the Pioneers in the
passing game, It's been either the inside with the leverage
from the outside receiver or the inside receiver getting outside
leverage on that linebacker over the top of them. It's
a great throw there by mckown and then Buck turns
on the Jets, big game for the Pioneers.
Speaker 4 (01:32:29):
Is that considered a Haymaker punction?
Speaker 3 (01:32:31):
Well, it was a wild swing. I can tell you
that Tyler Blake in motion. They'll fake the handoff to
the running back. Now mcewit will follow him and picks
up nice yonnay inside the fifteen down to the eleven
yard line.
Speaker 4 (01:32:43):
I'm the tackle number four, Luke Egan.
Speaker 3 (01:32:46):
He's been all over the place tonight, offense, defense, special teams.
Speaker 4 (01:32:50):
It's making a case to.
Speaker 3 (01:32:51):
Be our Currents and Lions dependable player of the game
for Guska Polka the RedHawks.
Speaker 5 (01:32:54):
So that play, that fifty five yard pass play from
mceewn to Buck feels like the breath.
Speaker 4 (01:32:59):
It's almost like.
Speaker 5 (01:32:59):
An eight ed got taken to the crowd here at
Portoreo Field because they were kind of listless there. And
then Dylan Buck with a big catch and run has
brought this crowd back to life.
Speaker 3 (01:33:10):
Trip Hookster in as a wide receiver split wide left
now McEwan designed quarterback keeper getting to push that time
from Adloff and his offensive line inside the five still
going and he's gonna work his way unto the end zone,
but they're gonna say his forward progress has stopped.
Speaker 4 (01:33:24):
He didn't like it at the four.
Speaker 5 (01:33:28):
Well, and the thing is, that's a tough job for
the official, right because you're you got to bring in safety.
I mean we talked about it with the NFL, with
the tush push and all these other things that have
kind of spawned off of that. I mean, at some
point you gotta bring safety into it. And I think
mceute and you're just getting guys running into each other
that's not moving, I think you just blow it. I
think that's a good call by the official there. I
(01:33:48):
know mchun wanted to touchdown, but I think it's the
right call. I'm not a big fan of it period.
Speaker 3 (01:33:53):
From the four first in goal, wow mque and they
read that and Cayden Dryer coming up big? How about
number seven? He's been all over the place tonight as well.
Egan was also in there, I mean efensively coming off
the edge that time for Cedar Springs was.
Speaker 5 (01:34:07):
Colton clay Well. That's the play that they ran on
fourth and goal. It got swallowed up. It's not pooling anybody.
So that's another one that you might just kind of
put that one in the back of the old playbook
for tonight. Because that fake handoff that's almost supposed to
be a lead is not working for East Grand Rappids.
Speaker 4 (01:34:24):
Then the jet sweep have been the one that's ones
that have hurt them that might be better off to
give it to ket Well.
Speaker 3 (01:34:29):
Now they try Caswell left side as the lead blocker game,
but this time no fake. It was just McEwan again
designed quarterback keeper left side down to the one. Here
we go third in goal and the RedHawks get to
stop another goal line stand they had one earlier.
Speaker 5 (01:34:43):
When Mallory just came off the field. They're trying to
bring in an extra defensive lineman.
Speaker 3 (01:34:48):
Quick over the football, McEwen dives in touchdown. Josh McEwan
is second rush he touched out on that his thirty
was responsible.
Speaker 4 (01:34:57):
For, and it tightens things up.
Speaker 3 (01:34:59):
With two fifty nine left to go third quarter, it's
now twenty one eighteen Steeters Springs and.
Speaker 4 (01:35:05):
East Grand Rapids gonna keep the offense out there and
go for two.
Speaker 5 (01:35:07):
And I like this because if they don't get it,
there's still the possibility of a tie in overtime, right
and you've already missed two extra points at some point
you gotta hope that the averages go with you. You
can get this one. So they're gonna stay out and
go for two.
Speaker 4 (01:35:22):
Here. Wonder what the call will be though.
Speaker 5 (01:35:24):
Now they've been on the goal line a couple of
different times in the short yarded situation, and they've tried
to run that fake handoff that hasn't worked. I think
you try to get Blake or Buck on a skinny
post and try to get leverage on the defensive.
Speaker 4 (01:35:37):
Mcn is confused.
Speaker 3 (01:35:39):
He's looking over to Josh Sadeck after the signals take
a lot of time and they gotta be careful. They're
counting it away in the back with the back judge.
Mckown just got it off swing pass right side, Buck
Fuddy for the goal line touchdown.
Speaker 4 (01:35:53):
He came back to it, excuse.
Speaker 3 (01:35:55):
Me, two point diversion, Buck, You know he came back
to the football. The Cats that time and that it
was all Dylan Buck. Yet a defender had to beat
at the one just ran right over him. And when
two fifty nine levens go in the third, it's a
one point game. Cedar Springs twenty one, East Grand Rapids
twenty welcome back to Memorial Field with more after this
(01:36:15):
on ninety six to one the game. Gee Buck Gino
and I can't keep up with the scoring recaps in
this one. Well recap what happened with the Cedar drive
and then the East Grand Rapids answer after this kickoff
coming your way by Will Klein, we will tell you
this two fifty nine left to go with the third quarter,
(01:36:36):
and back and forth we go.
Speaker 4 (01:36:37):
Steter Springs twenty.
Speaker 3 (01:36:38):
One EGR twenty cline end over end kick this one
fielded inside the field of playing about the six yard line.
Here comes Egan again and he's out across the twenty.
Better job by the East Grand Rapids kickoff team to
drop him short of the twenty five they'll find twenty
three and Bunk Gino catch us up on the scoring
recap here.
Speaker 4 (01:36:58):
Both teams put it up points here in this third quarter.
Speaker 5 (01:37:02):
Seriars Springs in the third quarter they scored first twelve
yard touchdown on fourth and six. Robinson in a beautiful
fake he goes into the end zone. I'm free as
the Pats twenty one twelve. Then East Grand Rapids goes
with the answer. Josh mcceeed his second rushing touchdown, third
overall of the game, and then.
Speaker 4 (01:37:19):
It passed to Delan Buck for the two point conversion.
Speaker 5 (01:37:21):
Narrows his score to series Springs twenty one and East
Grand Rapids.
Speaker 3 (01:37:24):
Twenty double tight endt formation again and AF fullback and
that is number zero Spencer shown born and nothing doing
against this East Grand Rapids defensive line that's fired up
now after they've made it a one point game.
Speaker 4 (01:37:41):
So second and ten coming up this third quarter. Being
brought to you by Kids Food Basket.
Speaker 3 (01:37:45):
Our official nonprofit for the LMCU high school football game
of the Week. We wrapped up the Touchdowns for Kids
campaign for season four last week with the end of
the regular season, and if you missed our interview with
April Butler at halftime, we announced that we had sixty
two hundred and fifty dollars donated with all the touchdowns
from our Lake Shore Game of the Week and ours
on the regular season Thank you so much from Lake
Michigan Credit Union. Much needed to kids mood Basket and
(01:38:07):
that makes our four season total for football at twenty
five thousand dollars. Exactly, counteraction breaking through a crease.
Speaker 4 (01:38:14):
Into the outside with his speed, got.
Speaker 3 (01:38:16):
The first down out across the thirty and he's out
up to the thirty eight yard line before he's knocked
out the bounds. Nice job that time, as he just
jumped over a couple of defenders in that small crease.
Noah Mallory, Well, and that's a really good job there
by Noah.
Speaker 5 (01:38:30):
That play was kind of stopped up. They had it
pretty well defended, but he jumps over the fallen lineman
and then there's just no support over the top. Finally,
it was Jake Ghosts that came across from the safety spot. Yeah,
there was just nobody there as they all crashed in
at the point of attack.
Speaker 3 (01:38:49):
Six down linemen, two linebackers in tight as they pitch
it to Show and Boar and trying to get wide.
Good job at the offensive line given a grease. Didn't
look like it was gonna be much there, like they
were just going to string it out, But all of
a sudden, he cut it up at.
Speaker 4 (01:39:00):
The forty and he's out to the forty four yard line.
Speaker 3 (01:39:03):
Give him six for the front full back shown board
second and four coming up for the Red Hawks.
Speaker 4 (01:39:08):
Well, they've had troubles with those plays out to the boundary.
Speaker 5 (01:39:11):
They're getting good penetration in between the tackles, but when
they've gone out to the boundary have the Red Hawks
there's just not enough support there. And they're doing a
really good job of sealing the edge and then bringing
over the running back and getting into that running way.
Speaker 3 (01:39:27):
Robinson under center takes this snap hand off left side
that's shown Born pushed to the right and drop for
a short game out of the forty six. How about
the chess match we're seeing with the coaching staffs too.
I mean, that's part of it that's been fun here.
They're both trying to counter each other, and I credit
both coaches and doing a great job of mixing things
up a little bit, you know, breaking tendencies if you will,
(01:39:49):
and we've seen it on both sides.
Speaker 4 (01:39:50):
Thus a one point game.
Speaker 5 (01:39:51):
Well, I think for East grander happens this now getting
towards the end of the third quarter, each possession now
becoming that much more important than the juniors. It's going
to bring into play. This will probably be the last
one of this frame.
Speaker 4 (01:40:03):
How good has this been on Halloween night? Partner? Did
k uniform at all for you? Well, you gotta dress up,
it's Halloween, come.
Speaker 3 (01:40:12):
On, dickend would appreciate this one third and two from
their own side of fifty, Mallory breaks and tackles still
on his feet, Dragon A would be tackling for a
couple extra yards into egr territory to the forty five
and now having to come out pointing at his helmet.
Is James Preston who made that stop? I think he
took a foot to the helmet to kind of rung
(01:40:33):
his bell a little bit. Preston hanging out for dear life.
But how about the running of Mallory here on this drive?
That's another first down, first and ten RedHawks. Boy, both
teams just trying to break the other team's will and
just can't do it well.
Speaker 5 (01:40:45):
These kind of happens again, getting pretty deep penetration by
the defensive line.
Speaker 4 (01:40:50):
But there's just nobody there.
Speaker 5 (01:40:51):
I mean there's seven eight guys on the on of
scribbage and there's just nobody there until they get into
the third level of the defense and Mallory makes ninety
yards get.
Speaker 3 (01:41:00):
Guska, Polka and all of the players from Cear Springs
had the four fingers up as we're heading to the
fourth quarter.
Speaker 4 (01:41:06):
This one's gonna be the signing in the final twelve minutes, folks.
Speaker 3 (01:41:09):
After three in Week one of the playoffs, it's Cedar
Springs twenty one EGR twenty. We'll come back with more
after this. On ninety six to one the game, so
the team switch sides. We switch in Cedar Springs heading
towards the north end zone on first down and ten
(01:41:29):
to start the fourth quarter, hand off to Mallory, the
go to guy of this drive number twenty three, going
wide and up the sideline, knocked out of bounds at
the EGR.
Speaker 4 (01:41:38):
Forty three yard line.
Speaker 3 (01:41:39):
Game of three, we do have an injured player down
on the far sideline for Cedar Springs.
Speaker 4 (01:41:44):
I tell you what, Let's do this real quick.
Speaker 3 (01:41:46):
Let's go back to Joe Errant because they've been rushing
us back into play after the commercial breaks for a
rapid radio scoreboard update.
Speaker 4 (01:41:53):
Joe, what do you got for us?
Speaker 8 (01:41:54):
Well, guys, we'll stick in Division three where Coopersville is
leading Kenwa Hills twenty one to nothing at the half
Zealand Way last check, still up one point on Niles
eight to seven. Coldwater and Lowell are tied at fourteen,
as well as thorn Apple, Kellogg and Hastings at twenty
twenty and just going to the half. In Division one
Rockford Leeds Grandville fourteen zip.
Speaker 3 (01:42:13):
Seas all right, Joe, we can't wait Meyers scoreboard show,
Joe and Cole working hardback. They're just a two man crew.
As we move into the playoffs, they'll have all the
scores and more. That's after our discount door postgame show.
But you know you had the monoculars out. Do we
have an injured tight.
Speaker 5 (01:42:28):
End as far as heater springs, Yeah, that unfortunately was
ty Lawson. I don't think it's going to be overly serious.
He was able to get up under his own power,
but clearly was in distress. I think he probably just
got rolled over because Mallory going out to the boundary, right,
he just kind of got caught up in the wash.
So it looks like ty Lawson's okay. He's standing up
by himself and telling everybody he's ready to go.
Speaker 4 (01:42:49):
So good news for Cedars, Springs and the Lowson family.
Speaker 3 (01:42:52):
Second down and seven straight t formation from the right
hash inya scrounder Rapids territory at the forty two yard line.
Nick Robinson coming over double checking with Gus Kapolka, now
takes a snap from center under center, hand offf Mallory
from left to right east grand Rappids had three blue
jerseys around.
Speaker 4 (01:43:09):
Him, got maybe a yard. They'll give him to the
forty two and that's it. Big third down coming up again.
Speaker 5 (01:43:14):
Well, what they do there this time is a really
good job of sending Mallory back into the defense. He
will get to bounce that outside and he may have
been able to this time.
Speaker 4 (01:43:24):
The contain does what it's supposed to do.
Speaker 5 (01:43:26):
They funnel him back in instead of crashing and committing
hard down into the defensive line. Stay out. You funnel
Mallory in and they bring him down after a short game.
Me I feel looks like they didn't give him anything.
Speaker 3 (01:43:41):
Robinson breaks the huddles straight team behind him, double tight ends,
set tight splits again, play fake robertson coming near side
of the lead blocker.
Speaker 4 (01:43:48):
Tryer trying to.
Speaker 3 (01:43:49):
Turn the corner does cut it up oh, he had
the first down of he for first field.
Speaker 4 (01:43:54):
All he had to do is get across the thirty five.
Speaker 3 (01:43:56):
He hesitated, didn't follow Dryer, and he's gonna be a
yard short at the thirty six. Credit the East Grand
Rapids defense for making a play, but I think Robinson
just gotta put your head down and get it.
Speaker 4 (01:44:06):
Yeah, and even if you don't, it's gonna be fourth
and short. But you're right.
Speaker 5 (01:44:10):
It looked like he had the ball right around the
thirty five yard line and then just took a quick
right turn and ended up losing that yard and now
it's fourth and short.
Speaker 4 (01:44:19):
It's like the.
Speaker 3 (01:44:19):
Michigan State receiver that had two years down and then
lost it.
Speaker 4 (01:44:22):
Great, boy, you gotta get it here.
Speaker 3 (01:44:25):
That's pivotal because now you set yourself up where they
could stop East Grand Rapids defensively fourth and one.
Speaker 5 (01:44:30):
And now they take Mallory out, they're gonna bring in
Aiden McClerkin instead.
Speaker 3 (01:44:35):
Robinson under center takes this snap counteraction left side Dryer,
and he put his head down and got the first down,
running like a bull in a china shot.
Speaker 4 (01:44:44):
Number seven, three year varsity player.
Speaker 3 (01:44:46):
Dryer gets it and that was just the battle of
Wills because Cayden goes and was there trying to make
the stop, but Dryer too strong first in ten secars Frang.
Speaker 5 (01:44:55):
On that play the play before with Robinson faking, I
mean that's been something that East gonna happens, has kind
of got caught napping on. They had the first down.
He should have gotten the first down in that play.
But again they're having to bring in a player like
Ghostson's from the third level because they're just losing backside
contained and not getting any help on those playfings.
Speaker 3 (01:45:15):
Don't forget fourth quarter means wing goosey Tom, you could
be to Night's wing goosey fan of the game. Handoff
Mallory trying to go wide, turns the corner, nice block
on the seal inside the twenty, inside the fifteen, grab
by the jersey and ripped on the bounds, but not
before he's in the pioneer ten of the nine yard line.
Speaker 4 (01:45:30):
It's gonna be first in goal.
Speaker 3 (01:45:32):
And how about that gate of twenty five yards nice
seal block though on the edge by one of his
lead running backs for Mallory.
Speaker 5 (01:45:39):
Well, and the other thing that you mentioned getting the
edge and ceiling it there doing a great job of
taking on the defenders and just getting them and.
Speaker 4 (01:45:47):
Holding the block, not holding, but holding the block.
Speaker 5 (01:45:51):
They lock up with the defender and then just drive
them using their momentum and give Mallory the edge.
Speaker 4 (01:45:57):
He's got some good speed to the boundary.
Speaker 5 (01:45:59):
That's a wide side play, so you gotta hold your
blocks an extra couple of steps and the good job
by Cedars Springs. They have not been called for holding
one time all night, and that's a pretty good discipline
out there. Quickly up over the football as they break
the huddle. Pitch right sonoh shoon bourne. Slippery turf, maybe
a little moisture as the dude developing here, it's getting cold.
(01:46:19):
Tried to turn it upfield, old boy.
Speaker 3 (01:46:21):
He comes up a little bit limping and he's gonna
have to come off.
Speaker 4 (01:46:24):
I think he kind of rolled his ankle on that
Egan gonna come in for him.
Speaker 3 (01:46:27):
Clock continues to wind nine to twenty and ticking left
to go second and goal lost.
Speaker 4 (01:46:32):
Yardage outside the ten.
Speaker 3 (01:46:34):
Now, by the way, this fourth quarter being brought to
you by Wing Goosey named the best chicken wings in
West Michigan multiple years, and oh those fries. Order online
dine in whatever for your college and pro football weekend
with wing Doozy, and we'll give you the cue to
call coming up here a little bit later on for
the wing Doozy fan of the game. Second and goal
from just outside the Ted, they hand off to Dryer
(01:46:54):
all over.
Speaker 4 (01:46:55):
It was the East Grandraft's defense.
Speaker 3 (01:46:56):
Look at that three guys coming up off the bottom
of the pile and one of the guys that was
their first hold in the edge with Zach Caswell number.
Speaker 4 (01:47:03):
Two, no game.
Speaker 3 (01:47:04):
Third in goal from just outside to Ted.
Speaker 5 (01:47:06):
You know they tried to go a counter again, but
that time theas Krand Rapids was ready for it.
Speaker 4 (01:47:11):
And now third down and long. Gotta be careful here.
Speaker 5 (01:47:15):
The playfakes have bitten the Pioneers with Robinson getting out
to the outside and then being able to make a play.
Gotta stay home if you're on that backside. Also, those
two safeties back there have to be wary of the
past plays now, because I think if you're seedier Springers
you can be you can be content with not getting
(01:47:36):
it here and having him free go out to kick
the field goal.
Speaker 3 (01:47:38):
Ty Lawson back in is the far side tight end
Robinson play action throwing it out there the loss of
the big fellow has at the six but whipped down
by number four. I tell you what, he has played
a whale of a game. That's Jake Ghos and the
safety short of the goal line at the five yard line,
just inside the five, so gain of six and now
(01:47:59):
four goal cedar screen.
Speaker 4 (01:48:01):
I thought they.
Speaker 5 (01:48:01):
Would be bringing um free out, but Guska Polka has
rabinsonow at his side.
Speaker 3 (01:48:06):
Boy, that would make it a four point game though,
seven forty two and ticket left to go on this one. Boy,
Guska Foca the river boat Gamba right down the road
twenty one twenty keeps the offense out. Fourth thing goal
from the five and now a whistle coming out, and
I think Guska Polka gotta take a time.
Speaker 4 (01:48:25):
Out now he thought about it.
Speaker 5 (01:48:27):
Now I'm saying he's not gonna no go for it again,
but he had to think about it a little bit.
Speaker 4 (01:48:32):
And they are and they're also running a little bit
short on time.
Speaker 3 (01:48:35):
He talked to Robinson for a good bit of time,
so maybe he saw something he didn't like.
Speaker 4 (01:48:41):
Let's do this.
Speaker 3 (01:48:41):
We'll keep it right here, our wing doosey fan of
the game. Here's the number to call Joe Aaron back
of the studios. Let's take Caller seven, Joe Caller seven
to six one six, four five, four thirty seven seventy six.
That's Caller seven. If you've won already this season, you're
not eligible for a twenty five dollars gift guard for Wingoozy.
Will announce your name and where you're listening from tonight.
(01:49:03):
We appreciate it. Happy Halloween from wing Doozy. So color
seven six one six four five four thirty seven seventy six.
Let up our studios back there and again we'll announce
it coming up in our post game show.
Speaker 4 (01:49:15):
What a will of a game here. You're just tuning in.
Speaker 3 (01:49:17):
Cedar Springs twenty one the East Ground Rapids twenty at
the home of the Pioneers fourth and goal Guska. Polka
just took a time out for Cedar Springs from the
EGR five not kicking a field goal.
Speaker 4 (01:49:29):
It looks like you're gonna keep the offense out, partner.
Speaker 5 (01:49:31):
My trusted Viniker has showed me the umphries on the sideline. Boy,
I think this one. You try to get Robinson one
that play fake. It's worked before.
Speaker 4 (01:49:41):
Wow. I think that's all I think that's probably the
play here. We'll see what it is though. Seven twenty
nine left to go straight t formation.
Speaker 3 (01:49:48):
Junior quarterback Nick Robinson under center, double tight end set
takes the snap, wants to throw all over him, didn't
even have a chance to set up in complete him
making the play with that cas Well, Oh wow, off
the edge. Number two does it again? How about the
Pioneers defense.
Speaker 4 (01:50:04):
Coming up with their own styff Well.
Speaker 5 (01:50:06):
I thought they were gonna play fake it, and I didn't
think they were going to pass the football, but I
thought that they would try to get a play fake
to get Egr sucked in. But Dack Caswell did a
great job of recognizing the play and just buried Robinson.
Robinson didn't even I don't know if any got got
to the line of scrimming.
Speaker 3 (01:50:24):
Mark that down though, seven to twenty six. With how
this one turns out. Because East Grand Rapids has a
pretty good field goal kicker on their own ride, it
will climb well.
Speaker 4 (01:50:33):
And that's the thing.
Speaker 5 (01:50:34):
If your East Grand Rapids now you feel like if
you can get down inside of clients range, that gives
you the opportunity to go into the league and.
Speaker 4 (01:50:42):
Drain the clock.
Speaker 3 (01:50:43):
Josh mccun last one with possession of football might win
this one. Two wide receivers each way. Pump fake goes
with the slant pattern, throw them behind, but I think
making a diving catching complete out across the ten of
the fourteen yard line. What a catch by Asen cocks
the junior six ft one sixty short of the first
down marker gain of nine.
Speaker 4 (01:51:03):
Boy.
Speaker 5 (01:51:03):
If mcewn throws it on target, Fox might still be
running right. He was in the clear. Mckwn threw it
behind him. A tremendous catch by Fox, right, Brad. It's
a little slippery out there, like you said, the little
you can see the moisture, yeah, a little lower due
point and the wind also not helping.
Speaker 4 (01:51:21):
Two wide receivers each way.
Speaker 3 (01:51:22):
Josh McCuen wants to run a quarterback draw left side,
trying to get that first down, and I think he
got it. Great job by the RedHawks defense. I think
one of the first guys there on that far side
was at losson.
Speaker 5 (01:51:35):
I think it was actually he needed two full yard
and I don't even think he got one.
Speaker 4 (01:51:39):
No, he shy the fifteen at the fourteen.
Speaker 3 (01:51:42):
So third down coming up for each r we'll go
to the Rapid Radio's scoreboard update, Buck, and I've got
a couple of scores. Want to update you on in
Division five. I can do it real quick. Ren If
it's Catholic Central early in the fourth just got another
score forty four to eat over Kelloggsville. So Catholic Central
looking to improved to a perfect ten and zero two
wide receivers each way. Mchown direct snap quarterback keeper left side.
Speaker 4 (01:52:06):
He's got the.
Speaker 3 (01:52:07):
First down out across the fifteen to the seventeen yard
life they're not afraid to do this. One of the
things if you listened to the interview with Joshannicky said
there was I forget what game it was, but they
were looking to run it out. It might have been
the Northview game and they did ten in a row.
Quarterback keepers with Josh McEwen say, just stop it.
Speaker 5 (01:52:24):
It's kind of like the Lucahern Rodford play, like we're
just gonna there it comes and you gotta stop it.
Speaker 4 (01:52:30):
When they did that against East Kenwood, the game that
we brought to.
Speaker 3 (01:52:33):
You in week four, easier said than done at six three,
two thirty with that offensive line in front of him,
play fake. Now they swinging out the flask to play
complete cuts it up at the twenty had some blockers
out there, you're John of the RedHawks.
Speaker 4 (01:52:44):
To get off of them and make a play.
Speaker 3 (01:52:45):
I think it was guess who mister Egan again they
came up with tripping them up at the twenty four.
Speaker 4 (01:52:50):
That was actually they had numbers.
Speaker 5 (01:52:52):
It was three on three with Blake receiving the pass
and then Egan, the free.
Speaker 4 (01:52:57):
Tackler can just as make it plays. I mean, that's
a heck of a play.
Speaker 3 (01:53:00):
I mean Egan was fading him into the inside and
then just cut.
Speaker 4 (01:53:04):
In was able to make the tackle.
Speaker 3 (01:53:05):
And he's playing loan safety back there centerfield like you mentioned,
had that I int second in short mcewn left side
and he's his spine him. Egan makes the tackle there,
but not before mceewn gets enough for the first.
Speaker 4 (01:53:16):
Down of the twenty nine. Then I'll move the.
Speaker 3 (01:53:19):
Chains, gain O five. Keep it on the clock here,
five oh six in rolling. Two timeouts left for Cedar Springs,
three for East Grand Rapids. It's a one point game,
twenty one to twenty could have come down to the
leg of Will Climb, the junior kicker for EGR. Right now,
Josh Addick saying, this is where I want the game
right now, with my offense controlling it. We have the
(01:53:43):
last possession rolling to his right, McEwen under some pressure.
Now I'm gonna tuck it. See what he can get.
Makes a man missing. Oh what a run by McEwan.
Speaker 4 (01:53:50):
He's got the first down up the near sideline.
Speaker 3 (01:53:53):
Right in front of the Pioneers bench across the forty
just staying bounce to the forty two moved the chains
Hantops Zakaz too, because coming off the edge was Colton
Claver from the backside defensive end spot, and Caswell saw
that picked him up. He could have gone forward, he
could have blocked the man up field from him. Instead,
he sees Claver stays back and then gives mckun the
(01:54:16):
extra time to roll out and then and then eventually,
excuse me, decide to run the football.
Speaker 4 (01:54:22):
Took it up and got thirteen on a broken play.
Speaker 3 (01:54:25):
Dylan Buck wide left to the slot. Two Wade receivers
that way. Now they'll motion. The man goes in from
right to left, right underneath us. He faked the pitchers
McEwen and he's got a first down again, diving forward
across the infields right.
Speaker 4 (01:54:37):
Takes at least a couple of RedHawks to bring him down.
Speaker 3 (01:54:39):
And he's in Cedar Springs territory at the forty six.
Speaker 4 (01:54:42):
That time, mcewn fakes the pitch to the outside. What
does that do? That freezes the linebacker? Then he goes
up the middle.
Speaker 5 (01:54:49):
The linebacker can't come down because he's got pitch responsibility
in that set that is able to open up the
middle of the mckun getting up the middle, another big boy.
Speaker 3 (01:55:00):
We're seeing some tremendous efforts by multiple players on both sides.
McEwan sucking a little win, but he's been carrying the load.
Now caterback keeper up the middle inside the forty Egan
goes low on the big bell and cuts him down
at the thirty six yard line. Another first down for Ehr.
We mentioned he's their leading rusher coming in as well.
(01:55:20):
Ten rushing touchdowns of the night before. He had a
couple already six hundred and forty three yards total coming
in first and ten EHRs. The clock continues to wind
under three to twenty in ticking to go.
Speaker 5 (01:55:31):
Now, I think if you get one more first down,
if you're East gun Apers, I think Gus Kapolka starts
thinking about timeouts.
Speaker 3 (01:55:38):
Twenty one to twenty Cedar springs by one. Two wide
receivers a the right, two to the left. Now that
motion Blake from left to right handoff and Blake's the
lead blocker this time getting the call his cas Well
spinning out of a wouldby tackling, still pushing inside the twenty,
still going down to the thirteen yard line. Great after
that time gain him twenty three first in ten East
(01:55:59):
Grand Rapids.
Speaker 5 (01:56:00):
I'll float it to mcew and of course he's running
the ball the last three times up until that point.
Caswell takes the handoff outside. Great blocking downfield. I'll tell
you that's vintage pioneer football. I know they changed the
offense and everything, but even when Peter Serves was here
the one thing that you had to do as the
wide receiver is blocked downfield, Well, that has not left
That tradition has not left here. Great blocking downfield, the
(01:56:22):
Asa Cox and Jake Ghosons getting the hat on the
defensive backs and pushing them down the field to give
Kaswell to the running lay.
Speaker 3 (01:56:30):
Don't forget you still have an opportunity to call wing
goosey fan of the game, caller seven.
Speaker 4 (01:56:34):
We'll give you that number.
Speaker 3 (01:56:35):
Just a bit after display McEwan out of the pistol
formation fake and there's white jersey's all the way around.
He's gonna lose yardage back to the fourteen yard line.
They were all over that dryer and lost in there
on the stop for Cedar spring So caller seven right now,
six one six four five four thirty seven seventy six.
That's caller seven, six one six four four thirty seven
(01:56:57):
seventy six to be Knight's wing.
Speaker 4 (01:56:59):
Doozy fan of the game.
Speaker 5 (01:57:00):
I think if you're a East grade abit, that feels
very much like they're setting up for Klein. Not only
do they run a conservative play, but they run it
towards the middle of the field.
Speaker 3 (01:57:10):
Motion man, blake, fake McEwen. Oh took a shot that
time and whipped down. We gotta play, we gotta I
think there was a leader that the most thirteen yard line.
They're on the stop defensive lineman for Cedar Springs. That's
Jonathan Lebera, the junior. And let's hold the phone and
win on the penalty flag. It's been a pretty clean
game tonight.
Speaker 5 (01:57:29):
Well, this is gonna be an interesting call for coach
Kapolka because you can take a second down in sixteen,
but do you take the down in the yardage yes,
because of the kicker. Because of the kick, I feel
like you just take I think you decline this one.
Speaker 4 (01:57:46):
But let's see what they do.
Speaker 3 (01:57:48):
I getting set to market off the official. I think
you gotta move them back, but that takes more time.
I mean they're in client's range one way or the other.
They're inclinent. Yeah, but I mean his ragne is thirty
five to forty. We saw that, and you got a
little bit of a wind that's died down now somewhat. Oh,
they are going to decline it, Bucks. You know you
(01:58:09):
were right third and eleven.
Speaker 5 (01:58:10):
And the reason I do that is because that gives
me an extra down. If they run another play, it's
a forty seconds. I got to burn a time out exactly.
So that's where I un though after the football because
it's a goal, because it's from the action of the play.
Speaker 3 (01:58:24):
Right, So they can't take a little bit of time here,
and they will. Mckun gets the offense lined up from
the right hash back in the backfield to his left.
Speaker 4 (01:58:33):
He'll motion.
Speaker 3 (01:58:34):
The man from right to left try to throw it
out there but incomplete, didn't set his feet and just
are at that time.
Speaker 4 (01:58:39):
He rushed it on the past to ghosts.
Speaker 3 (01:58:41):
And they try to set him up with that little
wide receiver screen with two blockers down field, and that
helps tear springs because it stops the clock.
Speaker 5 (01:58:48):
And I'm kind of surprised they passed there because that's
not a pass that's designed.
Speaker 4 (01:58:53):
For a first down.
Speaker 5 (01:58:54):
If you're going to pass, you probably should be going
down field and trying to get either into the end
zone or a first down. Instead, they throw it flat
and he goes incomplete, so trip hookstra is on.
Speaker 3 (01:59:05):
Remember they've had problems with the hold in this snap
getting it down with the snap right from the right
hash at the twenty yard line, so it's gonna be
a thirty yard field goal attempt by the junior Will
kleinb to take the lead with one twenty five left
to go. Snaps ago one to hold his down. Pressure
from the outside kick is up on.
Speaker 4 (01:59:21):
The way and it's gone.
Speaker 3 (01:59:23):
A thirty yard field goal by Will Kline and East
Grand Rapids has the lead back by two twenty three
twenty one.
Speaker 5 (01:59:31):
Well, the long snapper Freeest Grand rapp with is Marlowe,
and I noticed during warmups he was kind of struggling
both punts and field goals. He figured it out because
that one was beautiful, right into the hands of Hookstra,
no hitch, no problem, inclined dead center perfect.
Speaker 4 (01:59:50):
How many times have we seen it come?
Speaker 3 (01:59:51):
Playoff time bung Gino Special Teams twenty three, twenty one
and now remember what do you do here for East
Grand Rapids to kick it? Because I don't want to
kick it to number four. Luke Egan has had a
great night returning kicks. Let's see if they move him
and Caton Dryer up a little bit. And if you're
Josh Shannick, do you squib kick here? Two time outser
(02:00:15):
mating for Guska, Polka and Cedar Springs all three for
East Grand Rapids, and it's a two point game after
a thirty yard field goal by Will Klein. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (02:00:24):
Egan has definitely had the better of the kick returns.
I think if you're gonna do anything and kick it deep,
you're gonna have to I mean, Dryers not that much
a better alternative. He can really run that football. I
think you probably just ground ball one and see what happens.
But we're gonna see what they choose.
Speaker 3 (02:00:43):
Just count door postgame show to follow once we're done
here at Memorial Field plus an abbreviated Meyer playoff scoreboard.
They take kick it to cayten Dryer inside the fifteen,
right up the middle of field. He goes tripped up
and dropped shy of the thirty at the twenty seven
yard line, and on the tackle that time was a
(02:01:03):
sin Cox to finally bring him down. So here we
go first in ten from their own twenty seven to
start this drive for the RedHawks.
Speaker 4 (02:01:10):
Remember they've got.
Speaker 3 (02:01:11):
Mister Umphrey who can kick it as well, and they're
just down too.
Speaker 4 (02:01:15):
Yeah, and the wind has it was calm during the
third quarter.
Speaker 3 (02:01:19):
It's kicked back up here in the fourth, not to
the degree that it's started with, but still a crosswind
to deal with.
Speaker 4 (02:01:25):
So you gotta be on that left hash I.
Speaker 3 (02:01:27):
Think if you're seater spring Robinson takes his snap handoff
Mallory trying to go wide, got a kickoff, lock, gets
the edge across the thirty, then up ended at the
thirty one yard line.
Speaker 4 (02:01:37):
Tyler Blake was over there defensively free Egard I'll keep
this in mind.
Speaker 3 (02:01:42):
Umphrey four of six field goals this year, his longest forty,
which is a school record. Second down and six after
the game of four handoff, full back, keep you on
us back, nothing doing. Stuck right at the thirty one
yard lenning us Kapokak the bird his first time out.
Speaker 4 (02:01:58):
They showing Bourne.
Speaker 5 (02:01:59):
They tried to run him up the middle on a
quick trap to catch the Pioneers napping. And Grant Adloff
and crew. Also they're sixty eight for the Pioneers. That
was Isaiah Hall. Zero chance of that one having any
gain of yardage.
Speaker 3 (02:02:16):
No Colbert Key tonight, but you know he's cheering on
the Pioneers. He's a load as well in that front
five and Grand Adloff.
Speaker 4 (02:02:26):
Fifty two seconds left.
Speaker 3 (02:02:27):
If you're just tuning in here at Memorial Field, Happy Halloween,
and we've got the tricks and the traits for you
in this matchup.
Speaker 4 (02:02:34):
As expected.
Speaker 3 (02:02:35):
A thirty yard field goal just moments ago by Will Klin,
the junior kick freest Grand Rapids has given the Pioneers
to lead back after they jumped out to.
Speaker 4 (02:02:43):
A twelve nothing lead.
Speaker 3 (02:02:44):
It's twenty three to twenty one AGR over Ciniar Springs
RedHawks with a football and a big third and six
with their own thirty one coming up.
Speaker 5 (02:02:51):
Well, it's two Plaintarry Tory obviously, so you don't have
to get it here.
Speaker 3 (02:02:55):
I don't think it's gonna be a playpig. I think
they're just gonna have to run a straight pass Robin.
It's an under center, straight t formation play fake rolling
to his left, throws back to his right. He's got showboard,
makes a man miss trying to get to the outside
and trying to get out of bounds.
Speaker 4 (02:03:09):
Did he Yes, he did, he did, putting the football forward.
Speaker 3 (02:03:13):
Good job by Egr defensively though over there on the
stop was James Preston back in the ball game, but.
Speaker 4 (02:03:19):
He's short of the first down boy at the thirty two.
He only gained one.
Speaker 5 (02:03:24):
So fourth and five, he received the ball almost at
the first down, Murker almost at the stick back there
because Robinson was pruchered so far back, and now gus
Ka Polka is gonna have to send it in for
a fourth down play Shoonbourn coming out.
Speaker 4 (02:03:37):
They're gonna give him two, by the way to the thirty.
Speaker 5 (02:03:39):
Free given two Okay, still third I mean fourth down
and four yep. Either way, it's gonna be a tough one.
And they've only got now the one time out left.
Speaker 3 (02:03:49):
Nick Robinson, they gotta get it here, they gotta move
the sticks for ball game over. Forty four seconds left,
he goes out of the pistol formation, and now a
penalty flag and Cedar Springs took too long to lay it.
Speaker 4 (02:04:00):
Guska Polka can't believe it. I mean he was talking
to Robinson. Yeah, he took his time too. Well. I
think what he winded Robinson to do is get in
there and run it a little bit faster.
Speaker 3 (02:04:12):
Yeah, and he just didn't get and he can't burn
the time out there because if you if you burn it,
you don't have it, then you don't have any left.
With forty four seconds here we go out of the
pistol formation, Robinson out. Yeah, they was moving up front.
That's what I thought. Both sides fall starter, it's fall start, okay,
Cedars Spring's just falling apart here. Back to back penalties. Well,
(02:04:36):
they put a second back on the clad.
Speaker 5 (02:04:37):
They may have to adjust that, but maybe well down
the list of things right now.
Speaker 4 (02:04:44):
Awesome. You just just feel bad because comes down to this.
Speaker 5 (02:04:49):
Pivotal game, this pivotal play and is well played football game,
and you just have a mental error like the delay
of game.
Speaker 3 (02:04:57):
Well, I think both tight ends took copperately there. Well,
you know it was gonna be a pass.
Speaker 5 (02:05:01):
I'll talking about the one before, right, if you're if
you got Robinson back, I mean you got to see
the back judge counting it down. You've got to snap
the ball there, right, I mean the fall starts not great,
but the delay of game really is what hurt them there.
Speaker 3 (02:05:12):
And now gus Ka Polka is going to burn his
last time out. Yeah, there's just there's a lot of
confusion and there's just not any cohesion on the side
of the RedHawks.
Speaker 4 (02:05:24):
There's just chaos.
Speaker 3 (02:05:25):
They haven't put that extra second back on well, because right,
it shouldn't have run. I mean it was whistled dead before.
So forty three seconds left in the game. Cedar Springs
now burn their final time out to make sure every's
on the same page, so they are out of timeouts.
East Grand Rapids has all three, but more importantly, the
Pioneers have a two point lead twenty three to twenty
(02:05:47):
one and a stop. Who's leading the cheers Number five
Josh mcche and the quarterback twenty three, twenty one egr
(02:06:11):
fourth and fourteen after back to back penalties, just got.
Speaker 4 (02:06:15):
To keep on your man, keep the responsibility.
Speaker 3 (02:06:17):
They break the t two wide receivers to the right. Robinson,
the junior quarterback, out of the pistol formation. He's got
one back in the backfield with him, takes a snap
rolling to his right, throws complete, and they tried a
little hooking ladder. Egan has it and he's whipped down
and stopped short of the marker. They were trying to
set something up. I'm surprised they went to the short
side of the field. It ran out of real estate there.
Speaker 5 (02:06:40):
Yeah, but you gotta remember, I mean, this is not
a team with a lot of passing formations, and it
is a shorter throw from the quarterback for Robinson. I
think you, I think you gotta go there and try
to make something happen. But these Grand Rapids kind of
knew that was coming, and they had everybody available over there,
and they were able to out the RedHawks on fourth
(02:07:02):
down a tremendous, tremendous.
Speaker 3 (02:07:05):
I'm not gonna say victory yet because I just take
a snap one and go to one knee. As a
Michigan State van, you should know that until the final
zero hits the clock and we need one more Snam, I'm.
Speaker 4 (02:07:15):
Telling you they're not in punt formation. Buddy.
Speaker 3 (02:07:17):
I know what you're saying, and I was on the
winning side of that. I just say, what there is happen.
But here's what I don't like. They are snapping it.
And I know that coaches will say, well, we always
do it on the pistol, out of the pistol, so
there is the danger of that. But mqwan takes his staff,
goes to a knee, and the clock can now run.
What a football game to open up the drive to
(02:07:37):
Fortfield in Week one of the playoffs, we knew it
was gonna be a good one, and it lived up.
Speaker 4 (02:07:43):
To the billing. As the final seconds take away.
Speaker 3 (02:07:46):
Congratulations to the fineeers of East Grand Rapids as.
Speaker 4 (02:07:51):
They're gonna hold on here at home and win it
twenty three twenty one over Guska Polk and Seears Rings.
The RedHawks gonna finish their year at eight and two.
Speaker 3 (02:08:02):
Agr is going out in the district final where it
looks like they're gonna play Coopers Vale who is shutting
out Kenoway Hills, Remember Kenway Hills the number one seed.
We'll wait and see that finish coming up in the
Myers four board show. But East Grand Rapids, now at
triple Zeros, gets it done here tonight, twenty three to
twenty one, their first playoff victory under Josh Shaddick.
Speaker 5 (02:08:24):
Well, Josh is a younger guy, but I think he's
probably got a few more gray hairs after this one.
Speaker 4 (02:08:31):
A tremendous football game, Brett.
Speaker 5 (02:08:33):
Two teams that really wanted it, two teams that had
a lot of experience on both sides, as you mentioned,
eight seniors that started on defense for Cedar Springs and
East Grinder Rapids in the same vein just really good football.
Speaker 4 (02:08:48):
And it's it's too bad because we like both Josh
and Gus.
Speaker 5 (02:08:52):
Very good friends of our coverage, and it's painful to see.
That's the dichotomy of high school sports, right everybody's happy here,
there's always a fifty percent equation that is not happy,
and it's if you feel for those seniors of Cedars
Springs and it just came down to the execution in
the crunch time and East Grind Rapids was able to
(02:09:12):
pull this out a twenty three to twenty one victory
here at home.
Speaker 4 (02:09:17):
Like you said, Cedars.
Speaker 5 (02:09:18):
Springs ends their season at eight into a tremendous season
for Guska Polka this year a big improvement over last year.
We saw them in the last game of the regular
season last year and we saw kind of the seedlings
of what this could be. It's just disappointing for them
that they lose tonight, but a great game by coach
Josh Shaddock and his staff weathering the storm of that
(02:09:40):
second and third quarter that Cedars Springs looked like they
might be able to get the momentum and take this
one home. And the Pioneers of that last drive, senior
quarterback Josh mckewn putting the town of East Grind Rapids
on his back and carrying them into field goal position,
and then it was Will Klein ending of this game
(02:10:01):
with the field goal to win this one for the Pioneers.
Speaker 4 (02:10:04):
East Grand Rapids is moving on.
Speaker 3 (02:10:05):
They improved to eight and two, and if Coopersville hangs
on tonight, the Pioneers will get another home game for
a district final coming up next week. We got a
lot to tell you about we got awards to hand out,
scoring drives to recap. In more, plus that Meyer Abbreviated
Scoreboard show with our own Joe Errant and Colbania. That's
all coming up, led by the Discount Door postgame show.
(02:10:26):
We continue as you're listening to the Drive to Ford
Field presented by vandal On Home Improvement Live on this
Friday night here on ninety six to one.
Speaker 4 (02:10:35):
The game.
Speaker 3 (02:10:38):
Hey, if you heard Joe Aaron at halftime and even
in the third quarter with some scoreboard updates, you're gonna
want to stick around. There's some games that are tight
down to the wires, some surprises you gotta find out about.
What about our Lake Shore Game of the Week and
the rematch with Mona shore Is and Moskeegit on one
oh seven wus the Moves. It's all coming up with
Joe Errant and Colbanett and abbreviated Meyer scoreboard. That'll be
(02:11:01):
after we're done with a discount Door postgame show.
Speaker 4 (02:11:04):
Here everything we thought in more.
Speaker 3 (02:11:06):
As East Grand Rapids comes back to winning a thirty
yard field goal by Will Klimb with one twenty two
left in regulation twenty three twenty one after the RedHawks
were down twelve to nothing. Then they came back to
control the game from the second quarter on and then
East Grand Rapids getting some nice defensive plays and a stop,
and then the field goal was the difference. As we

I mentioned at six one, six three sixty three fifty
six ninety two. Well, let's take you through the scoring
somewhere in this one. You'll see how crazy it was
on Holloweed. Between these two teams, they have a history
of playing some good ones, and we saw another one tonight.
They were a twenty twenty five with our final MKD
(02:12:03):
Funeral Homes scoring summary in this one, here's buck Gino.
Speaker 5 (02:12:06):
Started off with these Grand Rapids a twelve to nothing
lead halfway through the second quarter. First and McCune passed
to Blake from nineteen yards out. The pat was missed
six nothing. Then McKeen a three yard touchdown run, another
missed extra point, and that was twelve to nothing in
favor of the Pioneers. Cedar Springs coming back though, converting
on a third and seven That was the catalyst to
(02:12:28):
a scoring drive capped by Caden Dryer, and that was
a three yard touchdown run by Dryer to bring the
score to twelve to set. And then Dryer breaking free
second touchdown of the game for him from forty yards out,
capping a ninety eight yard drive after a Cedar Springs
goal line stand, Umphree split the uprights to make the
score at halftime fourteen to twelve. Then Cedar Springs their
(02:12:51):
first drive of the third quarter they pull ahead by
two scorers Robinson on a beautiful ball fake on fourth
and six from the twelve yard line. Cash is in
not even anyone in the same zip code as him,
and Umphrey buries the pat to make it twenty one
to twelve. Then the Pioneers fight back wait in a
quarter as seventy eight yard drive cap by Josh mcchewn's
(02:13:14):
third touchdown overall of the game, and then he threw
a two point pass to Dylan Buck that made the
score twenty one to twenty at the end of three
no scoring until a minute and twenty two to go
in the game where Climb splitting the uprights will klinb
from thirty one yards out and that was the final
(02:13:35):
score of this game. East Grand Rapids twenty three and
the Cedars Springs twenty one.
Speaker 3 (02:13:41):
Pioneers moving on down the road to ford Field for
a district final in Division three. Will they be at
home against Coopersville or will they have to go on
the road against the number one seed Kennawa Hills. Will
find out with Joe and those scores coming up in
the Meyer playoff scoreboard.

Speaker 4 (02:15:44):
For both the Lakeshore Game of the Week, which was
a will of a game.
Speaker 3 (02:15:47):
Tonight between Muskegan and Mona Shores over on one O
seven m us in the rematch, and then here a
two point game, but you know, East Grand Rapids pulls
it out twenty three to twenty one. And I'll kick
it to you for our uptown cheapskate offensive player of
the game tonight.
Speaker 4 (02:16:02):
Well boy, there were.
Speaker 5 (02:16:04):
A lot of choices, really, but I think one kind
of stood out, and it was kind of obvious at
the end there, especially in the last drive senior quarterback
Josh mccun. I mean I said that he literally put
these kind of happens the town on his back and
he ran. I think out of the seven plays that
they ran, I believe, excuse me, the ten plays that
they ran, I think.
Speaker 4 (02:16:25):
He was the ball carrier on eight of them.
Speaker 5 (02:16:29):
So it was Josh mccun all the time, whether you
liked it or not if you were Cedars Springs, and
he was able to get them down into field goal
range where Will Cline.
Speaker 4 (02:16:39):
Sealed the game.
Speaker 5 (02:16:40):
Josh mccun though three touchdowns, two rushing, one passing tonight,
and he did have the interception, but he made up
for it with that last drive.
Speaker 4 (02:16:49):
And getting the winning field goal set up.
Speaker 5 (02:16:52):
So for tonight, our Uptown Cheapskate offensive Player the Game
is senior quarterback number five Josh mcchun.
Speaker 3 (02:16:58):
Yeah, responsible for all three touchdowns they had. Remember they
had some extra point problems and that's where the field
goal comes in. We'll get to that in a little
bit with our j H Family Stores highlight of the game.
But Josh McEwen, number five, senior quarterback for EGR, the
Uptown Cheapskate offensive player of the game and he's gonna
do some shopping on us at Uptown Cheapskate with a
twenty five dollars gift card. Wait to go, Josh. Uptown
Cheapskate with locations in Grandville and Kentwood. They buy what
(02:17:20):
you loved yesterday, sell what you want today, great sports
gear as well. Clean out your closet and you're in
cash for your clothes. Plus you can become an Uptown
Insider and get monthly deals. It's as simple as going
to Uptown Cheapskate dot com. And that leaves it up
to me. The Montel Construction defensive Player of the game.
When you have a standout defense like this, there's a
lot of guys who made some big plays. I mean,
I can talk about fifty two James Preston, he was fantastic,
(02:17:43):
Kayden Goes and was all over the place the senior linebacker,
but I thought some big plays were made by number two.
Speaker 4 (02:17:49):
And he was playing both ways.
Speaker 3 (02:17:50):
Zach Caswell, the senior linebacker, five ten, two hundred pounds.
He kind of came off the edge as a defensive end,
if you will, and when they needed some big stops
and it looked like he Springs had some well met him.
Number two was certainly around the football, so congratulations to him.
Another senior that is big for this run for East
Ground Rapids. They want to continue down the road to
Ford Field. Our Montel Construction Defensive Player of the Game
(02:18:12):
brought to you by my home team, Montel Construction.
Speaker 4 (02:18:16):
Zach Haswell you mentioned him.
Speaker 5 (02:18:17):
I mean, a tremendous game by the entire defensive front
for East Grand Rapids. But Zach Caswell, if you remember,
made the big stop on the fourth down. He's the
one that hit Robinson before he could throw the football
right on that critical fourth and goal. So all the
things that Zach did tonight were great, but boy, that
one really sealed the deal and gave East Grand Rapids
(02:18:39):
the chance to drive down and get the winning field goal.
Speaker 3 (02:18:41):
You mentioned this time of year, we always hate to
see when seniors have their season to end, and that
was the case for Cedar Springs with a tough loss
here tonight. What a great year though, at eight and two,
and we're going to recognize one of their seniors with
our Garretts Appliance Dependable Player of the Game number four.
Speaker 4 (02:18:56):
Luke Egan.
Speaker 3 (02:18:56):
I mean this guy, he gave it to you on
special teams and the kick return, setting up field position
on offense. On defense, he was making plays the interception, yeah,
and the interception as well.
Speaker 4 (02:19:06):
He did everything. I mean, that's dependability for gus Kapolka.
I think he's getting in the bus to drive it.
He might.
Speaker 3 (02:19:13):
He might, I tell you the way he played tonight.
Congratulates his number four. You were fun to watch, Luke
Egan for Cedar Springs. Tonight's Garrett Suppliance. Dependable player of
the game. Just like Garrett's appliances. He showed that dependability
that your family can count on, but that his teammates
and Guska Polka could count on. Number four for Cedar Springs. Congratulations.
All right, Well wrap things up with this before we
(02:19:34):
kind of set the stage for what we're going to
do next week.
Speaker 4 (02:19:37):
It's our J and HS Family Stores highlight of the game. Now,
if you're just tuning in wondering.
Speaker 3 (02:19:40):
What's going on with other scores, they're coming up in
an abbreviated playoff scoreboard brought to you by Meyer with
Joe Aaron. But this one came down to the wire
with one twenty two left to go in regulation, East
Grand Rapids going for a thirty yard field goal to
win it. And this is the way it sounded, right
from the right hash the twenty yard line, so it's
(02:20:01):
gonna be a thirty yard field goal attempt by the
junior Will klinb to take the lead. With one twenty
five left to go, Snapers ago one hold his down,
pressure from the outside kick is up on.
Speaker 4 (02:20:10):
The way and it's gone.
Speaker 3 (02:20:11):
A thirty yard field goal by Will Klin and East
Grand Rapids has the lead back by two, twenty three
twenty one. You don't see it too often in high
school football, except maybecome playoff time. And that's our JA
and AHS Family Stores highlight of the game. A winning
field goal for East Grand Rapids they win it twenty
three to twenty one by Will Klein. Now with sixty
(02:20:33):
locations across Michigan to serve you. If you're listening on
your way home, there's a J and HS Family Stores
near you. Stop in on the way to your next game,
or maybe on your way home to get a little
snack after watching some great high school football playoff action. Well,
buck Gino, we want to thank Chris Suster, the host
athletic director, and both coaches here as you mentioned great
with us this week. Josh Shaddick and Guska Polka big
supporters of what we do as far as our coverage
(02:20:54):
at ninety six to one in the game, but just
a heck of a football game and partner for those
people who don't know behind the scenes. We got to
talk about the games we want to do and look at.
We always try to put those teams that we haven't
covered that are having great years at the top of
the list when it comes to playoff to make sure
we covered.
Speaker 4 (02:21:09):
That was the case with both these teams tonight.
Speaker 5 (02:21:12):
Well, I mean, I know I had to gravel a
little bit to get us here, Brett, but no, I kid.
We looked at this and we thought, man, we got
to get some teams that we haven't covered that are
good stories. Well, clearly the Pioneers at seven and two
and playing the way that the defense played all year,
we thought, man, we've really.
Speaker 4 (02:21:29):
Got to get them. And then they we said, well,
they're going to be home.
Speaker 5 (02:21:32):
We like coming here to Memorial Field and seeing the
beautiful vistas of Reed's Lake. And then we kind of
got a present because the other team that we wanted
to see we didn't know if we were going to
be able to was going to be Cedar Springs. Just
the way the schedule worked out, we weren't able to
get to him in the regular season this year. And
we love Gus Kapolca and what he does with that
program and the MHSAA. Mark Yule got my request, he
(02:21:53):
gave us the present, and he brought us Cedar Springs
here to Eastern Rapids and we had a whale of
a ball game between two very well coached teams and
two tremendous groups of young men, and just this is
why we do it, Bratt.
Speaker 4 (02:22:08):
I'm telling you.
Speaker 5 (02:22:09):
I try not to get too cheesy, but this is
the kind of game, this is why we do it.
And it was just a well played football game by
both teams. It's one of those cliches. We're sorry that
somebody had to lose, but boy, just a really great
first round football game. And hey, we had a like
apparently by the results that are coming in, we were
not the only one that had a tremendous game tonight.
Speaker 3 (02:22:31):
Well, and don't forget the Meyer Playoffs scoreboard show abbreviated
version is coming up after the break, so we'll get
you to those because I know people are driving home
wondering about other games and scores. Joe Errett and Colebania
working back in our studios in the score Center. We'll
bring you those, But I just want to say this
for next week for the district finals, where are we
going to be with both the Lake Short crew and us.
Speaker 4 (02:22:50):
Make sure you tune in.
Speaker 3 (02:22:51):
We'll find out this weekend Monday morning on Wood Radio
and my Sports Updates. I will let you know, partner,
I know you're off next week. Great job with a call,
appreciate it. An unbelievable finish as once again, as we
say so long. Here from Royal Field our final score
East Grand Rapids twenty three Cedar Springs twenty one will
take a short time out then send you back to
(02:23:12):
the studios in downtown Grand Rapids for the Meyer Playoff
Scoreboard show coming up next here on ninety six to one,
the game
