awesome answers. Now a new EPP is going to drop

(00:23):
Failing hot Seat. Hello, welcome to the hot seat, Wendy Avery,
thank you Lola aka my mum. I don't think you've
done a hot I know you've been on the pot.
I don't think we've done hot seat before. We haven't
done a hot seat before. So I thought we could
do a special high Desert hot seat because that's where
we've just been. Yes, so the high desert for us means, well,

(00:46):
we've gone to Joshua Tree. I think it means the
Mahave desert. Boss might know all the sampan. What is it? Boss?
What's the high desert? Always got ahead phone, just the air. Anyway,
we did Joshua Tree, Palm Springs, and Pioneertown. So first question,
what were what was your favorite nature moment.

Speaker 2 (01:13):
In terms of Palm Springs, I didn't see it a lot.
And even in Joshua Tree, I didn't see a lot
of nature, if you like, I couldn't see one because
of the heat. I couldn't see how critters could actually
live and eke out sort of food and that sort
of thing.

Speaker 1 (01:30):
But I would say our backyard was very nature though.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
Yes, no it was. We did see squirrel and a
couple of hairs. And you said you saw hummingbirds which
I missed, but yeah, pretty amazing though. And they're much
smaller animals too. Yeah, and keeping that body mass down
to a smaller area I think helps so that they'd
be a smaller breed if you like. Okay, I find

(01:59):
josh Tree very Nata vibes because you've seeing the Joshua
trees everywhere, You're seeing cactuses everywhere. It's very desert, whereas
I would say Palm Springs isn't as natre unless you
go out find the hikes.

Speaker 1 (02:09):
Yes, yes, true, because there's oasis and stuff and stuff
like that out there as well.

Speaker 2 (02:14):
Yeah, and there's there's also a there's like a cable
car that leaves from Palm Springs. You have to park
and then take the cable car, and there's a lot
of hiking around there. But time sort of evaded me,
so I didn't quite get there. But yeah, I'm sure
you needed to get out into it. Like the desert

(02:38):
gardens and the zoo, they're open, but because it's summer,
they're actually only open to one point thirty.

Speaker 1 (02:45):
It gets too hot.

Speaker 2 (02:45):
Yeah, it gets too hot.

Speaker 1 (02:46):
Yeah, basically, how'd you go with the heat?

Speaker 2 (02:50):
Yeah? No, I found it. I found it quite good.
I loved I loved the quietness of Joshua Tree.

Speaker 1 (03:00):
Yeah, Pioneer Town.

Speaker 2 (03:01):
It was like it was like a different quiet if
you like, and you just had little sing songy birds and.

Speaker 1 (03:08):
Yeah, Matt noticed the beds to different to back home, right, Yeah,
for sure, for sure. Okay, favorite foody spot. I know
the answer to this one already for you.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
Yes, it would be Copley's, which is Carry Grant's, part
of Carry Grant's estate which he sold and was turned
into a restaurant. We had a great, great waiter in
Chad who knew the knew the menu inside and out
and was able to you know, point us in the

(03:39):
right direction. So I know, the food and the whole
ambience of that place was really lovely.

Speaker 1 (03:44):
I've seen matt would be a really nice place to
go and just have a martini or something. Yeah, and
wat Set for sure. But I thought the food was
really interesting, Like we had a roast beat riot sala
but had granola on top and like a goat cream breulet,
like quite interesting, kind of like combinations of sweet and savory. Yeah,
and then we shared a really yummy steak and you

(04:05):
got like a tofu dish, right.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
You know that it was delicious too.

Speaker 1 (04:09):
And you had some food outings in Joshua Tree. Did
you have any favorites when we were in Joshua Tree
or Pioneers nown.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
Yeah, I did like Tiny Pony because they did a
shrimp taco which a black and shrimp taco which was
really delicious with chilantro and I think goats cheese as
well on that. It was really delicious.

Speaker 1 (04:31):
Yeah, Tiny Pony is good, So I if anyone listening,
Tiny Pony is technically like a dive bar, pretty cheap, yep,
like not crazy expensive, good value. The other one that
everyone talks about is called Copper Room, but we haven't
been there, and that's at the Yaka Valley Airport, like
literally at the airport Okay, how cool. Now, I noticed

(04:52):
you did a spot of shopping. What was your favorite
shop you went to? Oh, dear, you went back three
times to Mahave.

Speaker 2 (05:00):
Yes, I did, and yes, I liked some couple of
products that they had there, and buying for presies a
little bit, but I did love I think it's PSP
in Palm Springs. Oh yeah, I did buy one of
the tissue boxes, which is really a mock sort of

(05:22):
like MDF or craftwood miniature mid century home and there
was about five six different designs and I just thought
they were so cute and so well done. I'm not
going to use it as a tissue box. It's going
to be like a piece of art. And that was great,
and a great Palm Springs t shirt in bright pink,

(05:43):
lolli pink.

Speaker 1 (05:44):
I feel like I didn't realize until we went Palm Springs,
but I feel like it's your kind of vibe, like
it's very mid century.

Speaker 2 (05:51):
That's one of your favorite styles, isn't it. No, I
love it. It's what I grew up with and it
felt very familiar. Also the place I was starting at,
the Coal they had a whole mid century vibe. The
rooms have been decorated in a mid century vibe, gorgeous tiling,

(06:13):
even down to the carpet. Everything was sort of looked
really authentic mid century and it was made up to
look like it was back in the fifties but all
new as such, and cute little pool and lounges. It
was just gorgeous.

Speaker 1 (06:29):
Loved it. Yeah, I didn't, I said to Maddam. I
was like, oh, it makes sense that mum loves Palm
Springs because it's your kind of vibe. It's that stylish,
like amazing gay men around, like it's all your kind
of vibe. Right, Yeah, no, for sure, whereas I would
say Joshua's Tree and Pineytown feel a bit more Western, yes,
and a little bit more like you're out in the desert, yeah,

(06:50):
a little bit more Arrod and all of that, which
is probably less your vibe versus pump. So I am
glad you did two nights in Palm Springs, because if
we were taking we often skipped Palm Springs and just
go straight to Joshua Trey. But I think it is
definitely one of like such a vibe for you, and
it's like it feels very Frank Sinatra.

Speaker 2 (07:08):
Yeah, no, I loved it.

Speaker 1 (07:09):
I loved it.

Speaker 2 (07:10):
And when I found out that Carry Grant had originally
it was actually like a guest house for him and
he would have his guests stay there or friends stay there.
And if you remember, Carry Grant had a perennial tan
and I can understand where he got it from Palm
Springs because it's hard, like, you know, you try and

(07:31):
cover up as much as you can with wraps and
hats and that sort of thing, but you know, just
the sun its it's relentless and it's just hard not
to get a tan. You know, you've really got to
work it. You still get sun rays through your UV
protection as such. But yes, and so when I found

(07:54):
out that Carry Grant had owned that, I thought, oh no,
I would love to go there. And the fact that
there was a chef there who was highly rated, so
I was quite keen to get there. So I had
to twist lolaen MAT's a little bit to get them there.

Speaker 1 (08:09):
Yeah. Well, we like finding little like quirky dive bars
and stuff like that. But what it was really cool
was I didn't know this, but the Chad, the waiter,
said that Kerry Grant used that house for people of
color that weren't allowed to stay on set, to stay
on set in lafl filming movies and stuff. Yeah, so

(08:30):
he would put people up. But like sounds like he's
pretty cool. You know, that's a cool thing for him
to do, even back then. Yeah, yeah, Okay, So you've
obviously spent some time in America. Give me your three
highlights of the trip, because you've gone all over New York, Chicago,
San fran You've done the Zephyr train. Three highlights.

Speaker 2 (08:49):
Oh, it's going to be hard to pin them down
to three. It would have to be Othello with Denzil Washington. Yeah,
I just and he came out stage door right and
he didn't come out the stage door to wave to people.
But also I had a seat which was about six
rows from the front right to the side. It wasn't
the top shelf seating because there was a little bit

(09:12):
of you were obscured for a very small part of
it when they entered or left off that side of
the stage. But you know, you could see the facial
expressions and mannerisms and it was just Denzil Washington. Heaven
really and it was really well acted. It's a shame
because with Shakespeare them being a tragedy as such, an

(09:38):
Othello is definitely a tragedy. It was just really well acted.
The whole cast were really good. Jake Guildenhall was in
it as well.

Speaker 1 (09:47):
Jill Sorry Gildenhall. He was a baddie Iago, right, he
was Ago, Yes, yes, yeah, okay, so and the.

Speaker 2 (09:56):
Other one would be seeing George Clay. Yeah, George Clooney
in good Night and good Luck. That whole cast ensemble
was really good. I saw that as a film about
ten fifteen years ago, and George Clooney was in it,
but he also directed David Strathheim as the role that
he played in that and just brilliant acting.

Speaker 1 (10:20):
Again.

Speaker 2 (10:20):
I had a seat that was probably in the dress circle,
so I got a more an overview picture of the
whole the whole show, and that was excellent. And I
love the vibe of New York. I quite like bits
of DC, except they were getting ready for the two

(10:41):
hundred and fiftieth year anniversary of the Army celebration, and
also it was Trump's seventy ninth birthday, so lots of
streets were closed off, and what I was planning to do,
they were all shut down, like the trolley and the
bus through Arlington Cemetery. All those things were closed down
because you physically couldn't get to them if you were

(11:04):
using a.

Speaker 1 (11:05):
Trolley or sort of transport. Yeah, got it. Okay, So
you two highlights have been the two theater shows in
New York. I would you say, is your third highlight?

Speaker 2 (11:15):
I did a tour which was part of the ghost
City tours, but it was an add on one. It
was a bus tour and.

Speaker 1 (11:28):
It just hold the mark a bit close.

Speaker 2 (11:29):
It took me round the Bronx and Brooklyn and just
really entertaining bits of New York that I would not
have seen other than the fact that, Yeah, but I
loved the Smithsonian in New York, and I loved Central Park.

(11:51):
I was there for seven days, so I tried to
see as much as I could. I just couldn't spend
the time that I would have liked at each of those.

Speaker 1 (12:00):
He goes quick in New York, right, sorry, goes quick
in New York.

Speaker 2 (12:03):
Yeah, no it does.

Speaker 1 (12:04):
So your three highlights would be I thought Graceland would
have made your top.

Speaker 2 (12:08):
Oh, yes, of course, we haven't even touched Memphis and
their fabulous Son tour. And also Elvis Presley because that
was one of the reasons for coming to USA, was
to catch up with my daughter Lola, and also to
visit Graceland and Memphis. And that was fabulous the tour.

(12:30):
We spent six hours there and could have spent another couple. Really,
there's just so much of his whole life that's been documented,
and like his school certificate when he was at school,
all his army gear that he wore, not all of it,
but bits of it when he was a private in
the army. And yeah, it was just mind blowing and

(12:55):
just so well organized.

Speaker 1 (12:57):
There's something like ten museums, plus the Grace House, yeah exact,
Plus the aeroplanes, yeah yeah, plus the cart fibulous for
those cars. I then went to I don't know if
I told you this, but then when I went to Nashville,
I went to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.
They've got another one of his gold plated Cadillacs, TV

(13:18):
inside it, phone inside it as you have. Yeah, yeah,
I would say Graceland. I thought Gray was going to
be in your top three for sure.

Speaker 2 (13:25):
You know, I know it was. You'd have to say
you're fellow, good night, and good luck.

Speaker 1 (13:30):
And Graceland. I think, so, yeah, for sure. And then
so it's so funny like last year Dad doing a
month here and this year you're doing a month here,
and like how like you've done some things that are similar,
but you've also done a lot of things differently. I
think for you, like theater and the arts and entertainment
is very important, whereas Dad was like front doing stuff

(13:51):
with animals and like like for him, we were looking
at sporting things and he really wanted to do like
San Diego Zoo, you know what I mean. I had
very different goals and whatnot. So it's just interesting did
he help you at all by saying what he liked
and how long he spent certain places?

Speaker 2 (14:09):
Really I did have a look at the album that
you did for him, and that sort of gave me
a bit of a highlight of what I might be
interested in doing. I had been to USA but the
West coast back in nineteen seventy seven and was in
Las Vegas when heard that Elvis Presley had died in
August nineteen seventy seven, and so at that time I

(14:33):
had actually done I was in Las Vegas then, but
had done San Francisco, Anaheim, which is Disneyland, and I'd
also done the San Diego Zoo, so I had seen
a lot of so I didn't really want to do
a lot on the West Coast because I'd been here before.
I did go to San Francisco again, but it was
literally a day and it was a very short time,

(14:56):
and I looked at different things this time.

Speaker 1 (14:59):
What were you doing here in the seventies.

Speaker 2 (15:02):
I'd sort of just I think it was i'd sort
of just finish my nursing and it was sort of
a holiday. And just because of my birthday being around July,
I just tend to go on holidays around July, August, June, July, August.

Speaker 1 (15:19):
Yeah, we figured we celebrated. We were Memphis. Yeah, yeah,
because you're the fourteenth of July on the fourteenth September,
and we were Remembers on the fourteenth of June. Yes.
And the good thing is you're going to go back.
You go back in a couple of days, or you'll
be back by the time this comes out. And then
you've got a couple of weeks and it's your birthday,
so you can't really get the holiday blues. Yeah, no, exactly,

(15:41):
you've tricked yourself out of the holiday blues exactly, so well,
thanks for coming. I'm going to take you to Griffith's
Observatory now because I know you love that Adele concerts.
We're going to go have a look at it. And
then I think Boss is going to make us dinner,
and you've got your final.

Speaker 2 (15:55):
Night in La sounds fabulous.

Speaker 1 (15:57):
Thanks Mum, and thanks for that. Memphis adventure was so fun.
It was, wasn't It was terrific. So really enjoyed it
all right, Love you, Love you, two girls.
