Welcome back to the Friday LA Diary!

Los Angeles Actor Diary

Self motivation. That’s the stuff that can get tricky if you’re having a down day or you’ve had a week of no auditions. And the truth is, that this week there’s been no auditions, but the podcast has been really exciting and busy here in LA so I’ve found that the pod is letting me throw myself creatively into prepping and researching up coming guests. The podcast has keep me motivated and propelling forward. As we near Fearlessly Failing’s 6th birthday I feel more and more grateful that this podcast exists. It’s been a passion project that keep giving back to me, especially when I need that little glimmer of light to keep me staying on course and focused on the dream.

So thank you to anyone out that who listens to the podcast, it’s such a cherished part of my life that wouldn’t exist without you, the listener. And if you haven’t listened to it before, it’s called Fearlessly Failing with Lola Berry and you can listen to it wherever you listen to pods (apple, Spotify, iheart radio app, you name it).

So this week, all in all has been a positive one. Let’s start with the Aussie Christmas party; it was huge! 250 people for lunch on Santa Monica Pier, then it turned into a wild afterparty that 1500 attended. The highlights for me were catching up with lots of lovely Aussies I hadn’t seen for a while and the Aussie food. The menu was headed up by two Aussie Chefs living here in America (Dan Churchill and Monty Koludrovic) and the steak was the stand out for me.

I actually ran into this week’s pod guest at the Aussie Chrissy party, Monty Franklin (who’s been on the pod before) but we got chatting and he came back on the pod ahead of his global tour, he’s got a brill movie he’s working on too. Episode comes out Sunday arvo American time, Monday morning Aussie time. If you’re an ambitious creative then this is the ep for you. He’s honest, frank and loves being an Australian.

Then we caught up with out mates for dinner Monday night, Matt made an Italiano feast with days worth of left overs from homemade focaccia to fresh biscotti from scratch. It was really nice to just have a chilled dinner and hang with mates and their pups.

I’ve been trying out a new local yoga studio this week too, its called One Down Dog and there’s 3 locations across LA, def work a visit if you’re in Los Angeles and missing yoges, they have 3 week passes for $79

Speaking of yoges, my friend (and fellow yoga teacher) Meg and I are putting our minds together to lead a yoga retreat later in the year in Palm Springs. We’re just in planning mode at the moment but I think it will be lots of fun, I’m about to focus on the menu ideas after I finish this diary entry. So I’ll keep you posted, but its shaping up nicely.

This week’s read: my friend Alex lended me this book: Amid Clouds and Bones by Ella Fields, I’m 3 chapters in an loving it, this fantasy faeries and it’s shaping up to be enemies to lovers. So far, so good. I’ll report back.

We’re off to Santa Barbara tomorrow, we’ve never been but out neighbours have a ranch there so we’re looking forward to our weekend adventure! I’ll let you know what it’s like and might even have to create Santa Barbara travel guide podcast episode, some sweet friends have given me such great recommendations.

Righto, thats my week in lovely Los Angeles!

Big love - Lola

Speaker 1 (00:01):
Welcome to your Diary episode. Here's the thing.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
I'm a bit of a nomad, so these episodes come
to you from wherever I'm living or traveling to at
the time, so I'll share with you what's going on
in my world, from book tours, animal encounters, delish meals,
nature adventures, health discoveries to swimming in Hidden Byron Bay Beaches.

(00:25):
Come with me as I share my adventures with you. Hello, friends,
Los Angeles, Diary coming for you.

Speaker 1 (00:36):
It's been a big week.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
We've crammed a lot of stuff in this week, and
I don't have too much update you on the acting front. Really,
I haven't done any auditions this week. Oh I did one,
but I feel like I did that last week right
before I record the pod. Anyway, quite quite slow on
the acting front. Super normal this time of year. It

(00:58):
is summertime and a lot of execs and casting directors
and agents and managers go and do a euro summer
So this is not rattling my feathers at all. Is
that saying? In the past, it has, but it's definitely
not this year because it's so normal and new. Chat
to other actors and they'll tell you the same thing.
But the POD's been really busy, so I've kind of

(01:20):
been just focusing all my energy on this Potter roon
and I love that the pod is like this thing
that I pour my heart and soul into, but it
just gives back to me in ways like this week
when it was much quieter on the audition front, but
then off the back of running into some old mates
at the Aussie Christmas thing on the weekend, I booked

(01:42):
some podcuests. So with that said, I booked Monte Franklin,
who's been on the Pod before. He's a very funny
Australian stand up comedian, also an actor, writer, producer. He's
directed a bunch as well. And we run into each
other at the Aussie Christmas and he's doing this movie
and I said to him, Monty, you promised me our

(02:03):
could audition for your movie. And he's like what, And
I'm like, you promised me about a year and a
half ago that I could audition for your movie. And
he's like, yeah, yeah, yeah, cool. Can I come back
on your Pod? And I go, yeah, okay, And so
I don't know if I've just talked myself into an audition,
but wrapped about it.

Speaker 1 (02:21):
Number One number two.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
It was so nice just to sit down with him
and get him on the pod ahead of a big
global tour that he's doing. So he's doing America, the
UK then and then where does he go. It's like
Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, then Australia, New Zealand and I
think he's doing regional Australia but he hasn't released those

(02:43):
dates and venues yet. But he's touring as of like
next week through to Chris the end of the year,
so NonStop human but it was really great god to
sit down and chat. The last time he was on
the pod, it's EP three ninety if you want to
go back and listen to the first time he was
on the podd It was so much fun, but like

(03:04):
a lot had changed for him and a lot had happened,
and so we got to have a really nice catch
up because when we caught up at the Ossie's in
La party on the weekend, by the time I got
to chat to Monty, it was already like a lot
of people were a few do Australian say, Bruski's beers deep?

Speaker 1 (03:22):
Do you know what I mean?

Speaker 2 (03:23):
And he wasn't drinking and I think I'd sat on
two drinks with the whole thing. So let's talk about
Ozzie Christmas in LA. The bossco and I went last weekend.
It was lots of fun. It was like a big
sit down lunch and then an after party. The sit
down lunch was for two hundred and fifty people, the
after party was for fifteen hundred people, So it's like

(03:44):
Ossie's United. Pretty much like you just see all these
Australians that you might not have seen for Yonks, especially
for me because I don't live near a lot of
the Aussies that live in that kind of like there's
a real Aussie pocket in LA and I'm not in
that area and I only in that so it was
kind of nice to catch up with faces I hadn't
seen for like a year or a couple of years,

(04:05):
like Scott Tweety who runs it. The last time I
saw him was literally we were both boarding the same
Quantus flight from Australia to LA on a night flight
and we ran into each other walking to the gate.
So that was the last time I'd seen Scott Tweety
and beat congrats if you ever hear this, Scott or
Jess just stats on a great party. So it was

(04:27):
a lot of fun and a lot of Australian cheer,
and we a bunch of our mates went as well,
so it was just really nice to catch up with people.
And yeah, off the back of that, booked a couple
of podcasts. So Monte's app is actually going to come
out on Monday, just ahead of his tour, and I
want to be able to put in the show notes
his tour details, all that kind of thing. So that

(04:50):
is really really exciting and I'm so proud of him,
and I'm just wrapped that I got to rind to
so many mates. So the next thing that happened this
week was other than doing a lot of pod prayer,
because you know me, I like to prepare for my
guests really really well. I then also Matt and I
went to a mate's place for dinner, our friend Anthony

(05:11):
and Alex and we made a big Italiano feast so
much time. I love that, I say we Matt made
a big Italiano feast. He made cotoletta, which is like
Italian schnitzel, but it's not chicken schnitzel. It's pork, I believe,
and he made for cauch from scratch and he made biscotti,
but it was a special type of biscotti.

Speaker 1 (05:32):
I don't know if you can hear me. Can you
hear me, boo? What was the type of biscotti you made? Contrucchi?
He made a country chi.

Speaker 2 (05:41):
So it's like it tasted to me, and I might
be saying this wrong, but to me, it tasted like
a bit of a lemon almond biscotti.

Speaker 1 (05:50):
Situation, really really yummy.

Speaker 2 (05:52):
And then we got to hang with their dogs that night,
so that was really lovely. I've been trying out a
new yogat studio just as a student. It's called One
Down Dog, three different locations that I'm aware of all
over La. So if you come to La and you're like, oh,
I want to do some yogs, don't want hot yoga,
just regular good old vinnie like a vinyasa flow class.
It's really nice and I'm going again tomorrow with my

(06:13):
friend Meg. Speaking of my friend Meg, she's also a
yog's teacher, and we are really keen to run a
yoga retreat together, probably like Joshua Tree, Palm springsy kind
of area. Meg's an incredible vinyasa teacher also teachers Yinn
and somatic movement, whereas with me, you've got the Vinyasa,

(06:34):
the Yinn and nutrition. So we were like, oh, with
our powers combined, we should do a retreat. So we're
working behind the scenes on that one. In fact, as
soon as I get off from this pod with you,
I'm going to focus on a menu a menu plan.
I don't know if you remember, I had a retreat
plan for Byron Bay with my great Yogi friend in Australia,
Dunk and Parveen, who's also been on this pot a

(06:57):
bunch of times.

Speaker 1 (06:58):
But COVID stopped that for us, and.

Speaker 2 (07:00):
We were so excited and we were all systems ago
and then yeah, Covid, with all the lockdowns in Australia,
that retreat never came to be, never came to be.

Speaker 1 (07:11):
My friends, what else?

Speaker 2 (07:13):
Oh, my friend just Alex just lent me a book
and I've just started reading it. I'm up to chapter
five and I'm already hook line and Sinker loving it.
It's definitely fantasy genre and enemies to lover as trope.
So you know, if you're a Fourth Wing girlie, or
you know you love the Akatar series, you're probably gonna

(07:33):
like this. I believe it's a standalone read. It's called
amid Clouds and Bones by Allah Fields. From what I
can gather, there's humans, fay, and then there's like a
combo of the two, like kind of mixed blood and heat.
Our lead protagonist is a mixed blood and they look
down upon her or the Faye and the humans look

(07:57):
down upon her because she's mixed. And then there's a
betrothed marriage to kind of like better the kingdoms and
create the right alliances. And it's definitely giving enemies to lovers.
So five chapters in, quite liking it and just a fun,
like you know read. Boss and I are actually going

(08:17):
doing a little road trip with our neighbors. We're going
to go state their ranch in Santa Barbara this weekend,
so I'm packing that book. I think that's gonna be
a really nice kind of like pool read to just
chill and I'm just looking forward to unwinding for a
couple of days, chilling by the pool, all that kind

(08:37):
of thing. And if you have any wrekis I haven't
been to Santa Barbara before. We know it's near Solvang.
Is this incredible Dutch town and we're gonna go via,
so I think we might go to Solvang first and
then head to Santa Barbara. We're kind of figuring all
that out today, and Solvang at Christmas time is a vibe,

(08:59):
so I'm hoping we get to go back at Crimbo
time as well, because I love Christmas and I love
anything Christmasy. But we're just going to go to experience
solving as it is tomorrow, this cute little dutchdown.

Speaker 1 (09:11):
How cute right, Maybe a winery, I don't know.

Speaker 2 (09:13):
We're just going to see how it all unfolds.

Speaker 1 (09:17):
But that's the week. That's pretty much the week that was.

Speaker 2 (09:21):
Like I said, mainly been in podland, which has been
so much fun and really like hustling to get some
really great local talent on the pod, whether it's actors, writers, directors,
really in that kind of world and just like cold
sliding into people's dm as being like can I get
you on the pod? So that's been really really exciting

(09:44):
to just kind of.

Speaker 1 (09:47):
I don't know, you know, just see who says yes.

Speaker 2 (09:50):
And also it takes me of courage because I know
about you, but like I obviously get a little bit
of self doubt. And I'm like, oh, I don't know
if they'd want to say yes. And then I'm like,
hang on, a sick POD's almost six years old. In August,
we're like seven hundred epste We've got to have a
two million downloads.

Speaker 1 (10:07):
I'm like, holy Mac, this is a great little potto.

Speaker 2 (10:11):
So I gotta have my American confidence totally, like in
my vision and energy when I cold email or cold
slid into people's DMS asking him to jump on the pot.
But I've been really in that energy and it's been
so much fun and it's been colled just to connect
with people. And yeah, I book my own guests in

(10:33):
case you were Sometimes they pitch get pitched, especially Ossie
ones will often get pitched via like book publicists or
they'll go through my pod manager in Australia. But I love,
I don't know, I love like finding little gems of
people and just being like could you want to jump
on the pod? And if they're like yeah, then I
get them on. But yeah, so fun. I feel like

(10:54):
I'm really wafflings, as has become a little of the
Friday Diary ritual. Well, I am going to do a
little oracle card reading for you so as always. What
my nan taught me is you always shuffle with your
left hand because I'm right handed. So I'm doing a
little shuffle now, and I'm shuffling the way my friend Denise,
who's a psychic, taught me, which is you put them

(11:16):
into little piles and then you kind of move them
around and then you do your little like rainbow bit
and that's how you pull your cards. And for those
that have seen me do this before or heard me
do this before, the way that I do is I
pull three cards past, Present, Future. Then I look at
the bottom of the deck, top of the deck, and

(11:37):
that's how I do. We're reading, so we're pulling past, present,
future now, and then I'll just stack the deck back
up so I can easily look at the top of
the deck and I think today as I record this,
it's a new moon in Leo, which is all about
passion and igniting your like purpose. So the card for

(11:58):
past remember past can be an hour ago, so it
can be yesterday, it can be a week ago. Friendship,
make a date for play, make a date for a
play day with.

Speaker 1 (12:07):
One or more friends. It's a really cute card too.

Speaker 2 (12:10):
These are the door in Virtue, Mermaid and Dolphin cards presence.
That's for now. Rest you've been working hard. Take a
nap and get some rest.

Speaker 1 (12:19):
Okay. Love that. Love that that feels.

Speaker 2 (12:21):
Very aligned for Boss and I's little Santa Barbara trip
for the future. Stay optimistic, your dreams are coming true.
Don't quit right before the miracle occurs. Love that top
of the deck, healing heart. You are a powerful healer.
Keep up the great work. Bottom of the deck. You

(12:43):
are being helped. Heaven is working behind the scenes to
help you, even if you don't see results yet.

Speaker 1 (12:49):
All right, how cool? Well, so good? So there you go.
How exciting.

Speaker 2 (12:57):
I feel like I've got a fun week and weekend
to update you on. And I think Santa Barbara is
like o Hai region, but we've done OHI, so I
think we'll go more like wine country vibes this time.

Speaker 1 (13:08):
I don't know. I'm just looking forward to it.

Speaker 2 (13:12):
And I'm gonna get packing so that we can I
can do some yolks tomorrow, catch up with Meg, talk
about the retreat, and then hit the road. Do you
know what I mean to have a day in Solvang
or Santa Barbara or get to the ocean. We don't
get to the ocean that much.

Speaker 1 (13:27):
That's it.

Speaker 2 (13:28):
We were obviously at Santa Monica Beach last weekend, but
you know, be nice just to take it super easy
and spend some time in nature. You know, how cool,
how lucky? What else tell you? I feel like that
is me. I'll do my final last like the way
I do it is I look at my phone. Look

(13:49):
at my phone. I'm loving Substack. By the way, mine,
I've just kept totally free. It's totally free. So if
you log onto substack and look up your my Laula
Berry totally free.

Speaker 1 (14:00):
Last week. Oh, we're on a really nice hike.

Speaker 2 (14:02):
It's called the We're not a really nice hike with
my friend Chloe.

Speaker 1 (14:07):
I believe it's called the.

Speaker 2 (14:09):
Bronson Hike or the Beechwood Canyon Hike. Anyway, you go
up Canyon Drive Beechwood Canyon Hike. You go up Canyon
Drive right near Galison's off Franklin Ave, and you're right
through a residential street and then you park and you
use this incredible hike and you kind of come out
at the bottom of the Hollywood signs. Really cool, really

(14:31):
wide parks. We saw a deer, we saw a few
other animals. We definitely saw a d and that was
really really cool. We've been hiking because it's summer here.
We hike Chloe and I love a little sunset hike
because it's just starting to cool down. But we did,
like I think we did like twelve thousand steps. So
good hikes in LA. Whether it's Runyon, Griffith Park, that one,

(14:54):
the Beechwood Canyon one.

Speaker 1 (14:56):
What are the ones? I love?

Speaker 2 (14:57):
The Hollywood Lake one is great, which is where you're
going around this big lake looking up at the Hollywood sign.
That's all flat, but it's like five I think it's
five or six k's for my Aussies. I think Americans
it's like three miles. And there's one more. I was
going to, Oh, I love the Mandival one in brent Wood,

(15:18):
but I've seen two rattlesnakes.

Speaker 1 (15:19):
I just want to be really honest about that.

Speaker 2 (15:21):
Whereas the Griffith ones, I don't see rattlesnakes because the
path is so wide. But the Mandeville one in brent
Water is off the chain, really great hike, beautiful, very
like you get to see the ocean and everything. And
then obviously you've got the Santa Monica Mountains and the
Topanga hikes. Also seen a rattlesnake there a bit too

(15:43):
close for comfort too, if I'm honest, it was really
close to me and it was rattling and had the
s shape. Oh, I don't know why it did invite me,
it was so close to my leg. Anyway, it's a
whole nother story for another day. And then there's obviously
great hikes in Palm Springs and Joshua Tree and I
have definitely seeing rattlesnakes out there too. Anyway, I didn't
think I go down the rattlesnake rabbit hole with you.

(16:04):
I've seen five in the time I've been Los Angeles.
But the Griffith parkhike you're pretty good. Like I've done that.
I reckon hundreds of times that I've never seen a rattlesnake.
Just seeing coyotes and deers, which is great because they're
gorgeous and don't come and hurt you, and they're not
gonna rattle and bite. Yeah, you know, less venomous and

(16:24):
the coyotes and what you only bite you if you
try to feed them or touch them. So just you
just let.

Speaker 1 (16:29):
Them see you and you see them and keep walking.

Speaker 2 (16:31):
You know, all right, here are friends, go out and
do stuff that you love. Remember, you've got this, You've
got this. Actually i'll finish with this what a ramble
today is. But anyway, I saw this off my friend's Instagram.
It's my friend Duncan, the yoga teacher I was telling
you about. He's very curl. Anyway, he posted this, Oh,

(16:52):
of course my phone is locking. I won't let me in.
I can pull it up on my substack because I
put it on my instact I put on my substack.
It's just a quote he posted on his Instagram.

Speaker 1 (17:06):
Okay, where's my page?

Speaker 2 (17:10):
And it was really just I was like, you know,
it stops comparison itis, which obviously creeps in gets the better.

Speaker 1 (17:16):
Of all of us every now and then.

Speaker 2 (17:18):
Their quote is onn lane, own wave, own pace, So
you're not racing against anyone else, you're not comparing to
anyone else. You're on your own wave, not someone else's.
So here, I'll give it to you one more time,
and then I'll say, Signarah, own lane, own wave, own pace,

(17:38):
Sign big love Bye
