Welcome back to the LA Actor Diary!

I AM AN ACTOR

This week I saw my therapist and and this is the sentence he got me to write down; I am an Actor, and gave me homework; for one month I am to live this mantra, to fully embrace being an actor.

You see, self doubt creeps in more often then I’d like to admit, and during our therapy session this past week. Terry (my therapist) said; “There’s a part of you that doesn’t believe in yourself as an actor.” Tough pill to swallow, but he was right, I didn’t.

Being an Aussie in LA means we constantly undersell ourselves because of the tall poppy syndrome that’s baked into our culture. Put plainly, this means that if you celebrate your wins too much you’ll be cut down. And American’s literally have no concept of the idea, at all. It’s absurd to them, and I kind of love it. It’s taken a lot of getting used to but it really means that you’ve got to kick that self doubt to the curb. It’s the only way to thrive in America.

So with all that said, back to my awesome therapist Terry, he said; “Lola, you need to see yourself as an actor, and nothing else. You’re an actor with an awesome podcast. You’re an actor who’s written a bunch of books. You’re an actor who knows heaps about nutrition and yoga. You’re an actor.”

So here goes: I am an actor.

Big Love

Speaker 1 (00:01):
Welcome to your Diary episode. Here's the thing. I'm a
bit of a nomad, so these episodes come to from
wherever I'm living or traveling to at the time, so
I'll share with you what's going on in my world,
from book tours, animal encounters, delish meals, nature adventures, health
discoveries to swimming in hidden Byron Bay beaches. Come with

(00:25):
me as I share my adventures with you. Hello, Fambam,
Welcome to your La Diary, Potter Rooney. This will be
the week that was. It's been a really exciting week.
I've had really some really exciting meetings and great therapy
session that I'm going to share a bit of with

(00:47):
you today. Also, Boss and I did a little adventure
last weekend and explored a new part of California that
we've never been to before, which is really nice. And
what else, I caught up with my mate Meg, did
a bit of yogs with Meg. I've had a few
fun little coffee dates as well at different places around La.

(01:09):
So so so so let's start with the week that was.
First things first, the episode that came out this Monday
was with comedian, actor, writer producer Monty Franklin. This is
his second time being on the pod, and he is
about to start this huge global stand up to us,

(01:29):
starting here in America, then going to the UK, then
going to Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, then going to Australia,
then New Zealand, then I think back to Australia for
Regional Australia. So NonStop, non stop you And I'm pretty
sure he manages his own books to like just such
a go getter, so self motivated, so driven. So Monday's EP.

(01:52):
If you've got a dream or a passion, I would
say the Monty Eepp's view really cool human then, so
that's that. That's a Monday EP. The week that was
so Bos and I went away last weekend with our
lovely friends neighbors, and they have a beautiful ranch out
past Santa Barbara. So we did kind of like a

(02:16):
little weekend get away from LA. We explored all these
kind of like regions. So we visited Santa Barbara on
the way up. Had a really nice little coffee. I
didn't know Santa Barbara was a college town. It's also
on near the ocean, so what used to be like
not used to be. It's known for its seafood. And
then the area that we loved was this area called

(02:41):
Santa Inez Valley, and that's got all these little, like
four different kind of like little towns around it, one
of them being Solving or Solvang, should I say, which
is a Danish town which we visited as well on
the way back. It's got a Christmas shop all year round.
And you know how I'm feeling about Crimbo. So that

(03:01):
was a lot of fun. But what I'm gonna do
is I'm going to sit down with the Boss this
afternoon and we're going to record an episode because we
visited quite a lot of like little different towns and
wineries and whatnot. We're going to do a little trip,
little tour guide because the only place that we've been
kind of in that area, because it's the opposite way

(03:21):
to like a Joshua Tree, which as you know, we
got to Palm Springs and Joshua Tree or specifically Joshua
Tree quite often. Like I would say, we've been to
Joshua Tree five six times, maybe more. We love it,
as you know, Pappy and Harriet's is like our happy place.
But this is the only other place we've been kind
of around this area is oh Hi, which we went
last year for our birthdays, which are coming up, by

(03:42):
the way, So I'm trying to think of an adventure
to take us on for our birthdays. But we'd never
gone to Santa Barbara. We'd never gone any further than that,
especially to this Santa Inez Valley area, which is so beautiful.
Think horse country, wine country, beautiful nature. Are just a
lot of switching off, a lot of fresh air, really

(04:04):
a slower pace, really really nice. Loved it, loved it,
loved it. So that is that's gonna be your Monday app.
That is going to be We're gonna do a little
adventure you know, guide of that in case you're ever
in LA and you're like, no, I want a road trip.
I want to go visit whether it's Big Bear, Palm Springs,
Joshua Tree, Santa Barbara. Well, we've got you now for

(04:26):
the Santa Barbara and that kind of area guide, So
that'll come out Monday. Then I know, I always tell
you extra stuff about this. And then I've got the
beautiful Claire jumping on the pod who's my pod manager,
and we've done this episode. We recorded in Sydney all
around like doos and don'ts of podcasting, how to create
your own pod. As you know, I coach people on

(04:46):
this around, like how to create a pod or how
to write a book, And so bringing Claire on and
talking about podcasting when I want, I think you're going
to love. And then I just locked in a really
exciting guest yesterday here in La and how the ball
is rolling with that. We're gonna hire a full studio here,
film the whole thing. It'll be a big, big pod guest.

(05:10):
So I'm really excited. So lots of exciting stuff coming
with the pod. And then the pod turns. How does
it turn this year? I've written it down in my
pod thing. Does it turn six? Or does it turn seven?
I think it turns six years old in August. Pod
turns six in August. How wild is that? Why old?

(05:31):
Why old? Yeah? So there you go. So the pod
is really like, I'm so pumped, you know how much
I could podcast All the Cows come Home? I absolutely
love it. But that is just your little taste of
what's to come on the Pod of Rooney. Now I
want to talk to you a little bit about this
week's therapy session because I had a session with my
beautiful therapist Terry, and we got chatting and it was

(05:53):
just one of those I was feeling a little bit flat,
you know those days where you're like the self doubt
creeps in, and I was just not feeling like I
am where I want to be career wise as an actor.
That's how I was feeling. And Terry's like, where the
f is this self doubt coming from. He's like, why
don't you see yourself as an actor? He's like, You've
just shot a pilot, like the trailers come out, you

(06:15):
know that that's going to premiere later in the year.
And I'm like I know, and he's like, and you
acted on it. I'm like I know. And he's like,
and you belong on a set and I'm like I know.
And he's like, so you're an actor and I was like, well,
I kind of say like I'm an author, podcaster and
aspiring actor. And he's like, absolutely fucking not, Lola. He's like,
you're an actor. Stop underselling yourself. And I think it's

(06:37):
this thing that we ozsies do a little bit in America.
I don't know if anybody has had this happen, but
I don't know, like when I and I've kind of
I'm starting to like grow out of it having been
here for so long, like this is my fourth or
fifth year in America, but like we're not good like
Ozzie's because of the tall poppy syndrome. You say that

(06:58):
to an American, by the way, and they're like, what
tell Pippy what? They literally don't know what you mean.
But that concept of like you don't ever like celebrate
your wins or celebrate yourself too much because of tall
poppy syndrome, you'll be cut down. And the theory is
that poppies grow better as a group as opposed to
one outshining the others, and that is where that tall

(07:19):
poppy syndrome comes from. I think it's very specific to
Australia and New Zealand, maybe England, but it's definitely an
Aussie New Zealand thing, it's for sure, and an American literally,
because Americans take you literally if you undersell yourself. Like
I remember I was I was an acting class and
after class Someone's like, oh, have you written books? And

(07:41):
I was like, oh, yeah, just a couple. And you
could see it was like almost like they weren't. They
were like, what's wrong? With them, whereas now I'm like, yeah,
I'm the author of eleven books, like I just have
to say it like prop like not even like wogo me,
just like actual, that's kind of what I've got to

(08:02):
But this is where my therapist was like, you need
to live and breathe and navigate your days as I'm
an actor. So I am an actor. Is I've got
it stuck on the fridge, I've got it stuck on
the bathroom mirror, I've got it in my diary. I've
stuck it on different dates so that it's like a
surprise to me when I see it, and I have

(08:25):
this is the homework I've been given, and that is
to live with this lens for the next month and
then I have my next check in and we're going
to unpack it all. So like literally, every every choice
I make has to run through the lens of I'm
an actor. The way I move my body, the way

(08:45):
I nourish my body, the type of art that I consume,
whether it's music, whether it's watching a show, you know. Like,
so I'm kind of scared of this home, like if
I'm being honest with you, And Terry said to me,
he because I was like, he goes, you need to

(09:07):
see yourself. He literally says he said this, I wrote
it down see Lola as an actor and nothing else.
And he goes, You're an actor with an awesome podcast,
You're an actor who's written a bunch of books. You're
an actor who knows heaps about nutrition and yoga. You're
an actor. So we did loads of work around this.

(09:30):
It was like quite a lot came up for me,
Like I could feel like my emotion and all of that.
But I was like, fuck it, what have I got
to lose. I don't want to sit in the feeling
of self doubt anymore. I have achieved great stuff. I
have booked my first acting gig and done that, and
there's some other exciting stuff on the horizon. In that front,
I have to let go of just that little bit

(09:52):
of self doubt that just creeps me. And I'm so
great at coaching other people around that. Like I coach
people on writing books, I coach people on podcasting. I
love seeing the magic in someone else and like shining
a light on that and kind of fanning it as
if it was a flame. But when it comes to yourself,
and I don't know if you can relate to this,
sometimes it can get really scary and hard to do that.

(10:13):
And for me, it's that feeling of like you're standing
on the edge of a cliff. I don't know if
you've ever skydive before. I've skydive before. I fucking loved it.
But that feeling before you are thrown out of the plane,
that feeling and you know you're about to free fall,
and that freefall is petrifying because the feeling is you
could die, and it's also exhilarating. It's like the best

(10:38):
feeling as well. It's like thirteen seconds or something, maybe
even less. And so I think what my whole thing is, Like,
I'm an actor. I have to be comfortable in the
free fall. That is where I'm at. So a boss
is texting me right now he knows I'm podcasting. That
is where I'm at. Like literally every morning, Matt's like,

(11:02):
what are you. I'm like, I'm an actor and I
just need to be I'm also a control freak virgo
for virgos in my chart, and so this feeling of
letting go of safety, letting go of like systems I've
had in place to survive, and that was another big
thing that came up in therapy, like like stop surviving,

(11:23):
start thriving, and I was like, okay, okay, and and
Terry's so good. He is quite tough with me and
I love it. He goes fuck him thriving. People don't
take prisoners, and he was just like, stop surviving, start thriving.

(11:45):
And so we're sitting in there, this is where I'm at,
Like I am an actor, I am thriving. I've already
got great opportunities coming in that I'm so pumped for,
both on the pod front and the acting front, which are,
to be really honest with you, they're the two things
that like fill up my cup and that I would
do over and over again until the cows come home.

(12:07):
They're the two real And obviously I love writing as well.
But writing is I think everybody should write. Like I
have a substack. I love it. I write. I write
diary entries. I would say a couple of times a
week as far as like just for myself, and then
I put a substack out on Fridays, which is a

(12:28):
diary entry much like this but in written form. And
I just think, like getting so clear on like who
you fundamentally are, who are you? Not? Who I would
be if nothing else mattered. You've got to be that
person now. The financial hardship, the rejection, fear of rejection,

(12:53):
the fear of failing, all of that, Like as an actor,
you fail all the time, Like I can't take how
many auditions I just do and you never hear back.
So I think it's that real trusting being okay with
the free fall and like self belief piece. And obviously

(13:15):
there are days where you're going to be like, oh,
I'm shit, I'm terrible all those things, but it's like
being like, no, I've done this deal with myself for
the next month, Like I'm thriving, I am an actor.
This is the energy that I'm sitting in, and so
I guess I'm just verbally sharing with you my goal
for the next month. And you know, it's perfect timing

(13:37):
this episode for you. Ozzie's will be coming out on
the first of August, so I think on the first
of September or around that date, whenever the diary it falls,
we should do a check in on this and just
like see how it went. Because I know when I
don't when I've got self doubt, I don't live like
an actor. I don't move my body the way I
would like to. I don't nourish it the way I

(13:58):
would like to, don't look after my sleep and my
skin and all those things that make me feel like
I'm honoring this journey. And so I really do think
that choosing to thrive and not survive is a real

(14:19):
like lock in. That's what that sound was. By the way,
does that make sense? I really do feel like I've waffled,
but I do feel like I shared very honestly. And
now I'm gonna pull you an oracle card like I
do every week at the end of our diary apps,
what is happening? I don't even know what's happening. I've

(14:40):
got like three diaries out in front of me. Yep,
I'm that absolute mentalist of a person. What have I
got on this week? Oh my god? Next week's August? Guys,
holy man, Well it's August for you now Friday, because
you're a day ahead of us in LA. Can you

(15:01):
hear all my papers? Smooging POD's coming out? I've got
coaching consults from coaching people around, writing a book, teaching
a bunch of yoga rouneis Yeah, so exciting. Oh my goodness.

(15:22):
All right, I'm shuffling. Can you hear? All right, let's
do a little spread. One, two, three, past present future
soulmate cards come straight up. Soul mate relationship, new romance
with spiritual biases here for you. Now interesting as well.

(15:46):
We are in a mercury retrograde in LEO, so that's
what you hear from Old X as well. Just something
to be aware of the present. Divine magic, extra magical
energy surrounds your situation right now. Expect miracles. I always
like to make a wish when this card comes up.
So my wish is I am an actor, need to
live at one hundred percent. And then the final card

(16:06):
of the pull is have faith your prayers are manifesting.
Remain positive and follow the guidance. And then bottom of
the deck is yes, your intuition is correct, Take action accordingly.
Top of the deck. Time to move on. It's time
to let go of the old, worn out so the
new can come in ough so timely. I love this.

(16:27):
I love catching up with you guys. Like I said,
some really exciting pod guests on the horizon that I
just cannot wait to share with you. Creatives go getters
people with passion, and I really think you're gonna get
a lot out of these next few potterroonies that are
coming out. And as you know, it's the pod is
my baby. I love love love sharing the pod with you. Yeah,

(16:52):
all right, Harry, you flip on wonderful, go out, pick
a man, trap, do what I'm doing. I am an actor,
whatever that is for you. I am a writer. I
am whatever your deepest purpose and passion is. And then
live with that lens like live life through the lens
of I am an actor, or I am a writer,

(17:13):
or I am a musician, or i am I'm really
only good at creative stuff. And I okay, I am
a director, I am an attorney, I am a kick
ass lawyer, I am a doctor. Whatever it is that
you want to be. I'm going to stick with I
am an actor. Let's check in. I'll keep your posted

(17:34):
with it each week. But yeah, this is my this
is the time. Let's lock in one month, one month
of living with this clear, precise mantra. All right, hooru,
big love, You're the best. Bye.
