because I believe it's a chance for us to learn,
grow and face our blind spots. Each week, I'll interview
a different guest about their highs as well as their lows,

(00:26):
all in a bid to inspire us to feiously Failtnica,
are you doing near sound test? Yeah, welcome back to
the podboot.

Speaker 2 (00:39):
Oh you already record.

Speaker 1 (00:40):
I was going to say he didn't I hit record?

Speaker 2 (00:42):
Ah?

Speaker 1 (00:43):
I snuck it in, didn't.

Speaker 2 (00:45):
I cheeky very much.

Speaker 1 (00:47):
So. So for the regulars on the pod, you are
a recurring fixture, a recurring permanent fixture.

Speaker 2 (00:58):
Yeah, returning permanent guests.

Speaker 1 (01:02):
Well, I think you're going to be returning a little
bit more coming up too, because in a couple of
weeks we have our six year of the pod being
around really yeah, a long time, and then we also
have our birthdays and we're both turning the Big four.

Speaker 2 (01:23):
Not allowed to say that number out loud.

Speaker 1 (01:26):
We're thirty nine, you told me last night. For six
more weeks.

Speaker 2 (01:29):
Yeah, that's crazy, right crazy?

Speaker 1 (01:33):
But today's actually a travel pod and a little guide
pod of a place that you and I have never
been to before.

Speaker 2 (01:40):
Yes, we've been out and about exploring.

Speaker 1 (01:44):
So living in La means there's great places to road
trip to Ohai, which we've done, Joshua Tree, Palm Springs.
We haven't done Big Bear yet. We planned a trip
booked it and then there was massive.

Speaker 2 (01:57):
Fires, right I remember that.

Speaker 1 (01:59):
So we haven't not Big Beer yet, but we have
done a lot of or California, should I say so?
This is another part of California that we haven't been
to before. So where we spent most of our weekend
was in an area called the Santa Inez Valley, which
kind of has four little towns all attached together, that

(02:24):
being Solvang, Santa Ines, and Los Olivos which means the Olives,
which was our favorite part wash yes, oh yes. And
we were walking down that that specific town and I
was like, gee, lots of olive trees, and you said,

(02:46):
didn't the.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
Name of the town give it that away?

Speaker 1 (02:49):
And I had not put two and two together. But
I also had a few wines.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
Your Spanish could be a little bit better. I've been
learning Spanish.

Speaker 1 (02:57):
Yeah, mananaana sa manyana tomorrowmorrow. Okay, So we just want
to give you a guide if you were to go
to this beautiful part of California, Santa Inez Valley. It's
I'm going to be real, it's not two hours from
la I would say it's two and a half to three.

Speaker 2 (03:19):
Yeah, two and a half easily easy. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (03:22):
Yeah. So we stopped by on our way there in
Santa Barbara. What I didn't know about Santa Barbara is
that it's a college chown that's about two hours from Mala.
So it's gorgeous beach college town, kind of known for
its seafood, not that we had any. We went to
a cafe called Kaje caje c a j e with

(03:46):
a little fancy thing on top. How would you say that?
Cage like Yeah, and it kind of felt like a
mini city. It was definitely like z vibes, but cool,
little coastal city vibes. A lot of eighteen year olds. Yeah,
I would say that to anyone planning there.

Speaker 2 (04:08):
What's the university that's there, I.

Speaker 1 (04:10):
Don't know, but it is definitely a college town and
I didn't know that. I thought it was more like
bougie vibes, holiday vibe, like holiday goers.

Speaker 2 (04:18):
Yeah, do you want to talk about quickly, just how
to get there first. Yeah, so you like the direction,
There is two directions you can take, but we went
through like the Santa Clarita inland Vibe, but we came
back via Calabasas. So ala you drive like through Calabasas

(04:39):
and then Interventura, which is like a cool little like
beach town beach area, and then that goes into Santa Barbara.

Speaker 1 (04:47):
Goes like Montecito, which is a real rich, bougie area,
I think, is it? Yeah? I think that's where they
set is it big little lies that Nicole keeping ah?

Speaker 2 (05:00):
Yeah, yeah.

Speaker 1 (05:01):
It was written by Lorraine Mariachi in Australian author actually
originally written for Sorrento or Portsy.

Speaker 2 (05:07):
Really that's pretty cool.

Speaker 1 (05:08):
But they said it there in Monte Seito. I think, so,
like that's super rich, I know, and Calabasas is obviously
where the Kardashians and stuff live. I have Calabasas on
our list because we came back through this.

Speaker 2 (05:19):
Why until later?

Speaker 1 (05:22):
Oh okay, yeah, So Santa Barbara. What we loved about
it was it's got this cool Spanish architecture. It felt
very quaint, very kind of like a small little beach
city is how I would just Spanish beach town, correct,
but college town as well. So if I was to
go there as an adult, which obviously I am, i'd

(05:43):
probably say go there during the week and it's probably
going to have less kiddos just rolling around.

Speaker 2 (05:49):
And it is a like a weekend to town, so
it's always going to be pumping on weekends.

Speaker 1 (05:55):
Yeah, okay, great. So then from there, so we actually
had to fun fact, we actually had to go to
Santa Barbara because Boss had to do it.

Speaker 2 (06:03):
We yeah, well that's okay. It was already two hours
into the drive, I know, I know.

Speaker 1 (06:10):
So that that was and how good we got to
see a place we've never been to before. Exactly a
friend of mine gave me. I thought, well, that's where
we were going for the whole trip, and so old
friend of mine gave me all these list of places
to go. Really known for its seafood. Apparently they've got
a Himalayan salts room that you can go and just
sit in as well that healing benefits. I saw that,

(06:31):
like we walked past it. Yeah, and it was just
cool that there was a lot of like village aspects,
like a giant chess board where people playing chess and
then hacky sacks, and there was a lot of that
kind of vibe, and I noticed there was a theater
and stuff as well.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
I don't think it's called hacky sack. Like when they
throw the sack into the like the whole hole, what
do you call that? I don't know, but it's not
hacky sack. Is like when you kick in the hacky sack?

Speaker 1 (06:58):
What's that ball game? Yeah, sa sax or seeds or corn?
What do they put inside those sacks?

Speaker 2 (07:06):
No idea, probably rice, No idea.

Speaker 1 (07:09):
I reckon it's corn.

Speaker 2 (07:11):
Maybe it's corn.

Speaker 1 (07:12):
We need Monica Padman to fact check the end of
our episode for us. Okay. So then we went on
to loss. I can't say it Los Alevos, Los Olivos.
I keep wanting to say Los Olivos. Well that's the
Aussie accent, okay.

Speaker 2 (07:29):
Ye, So half an hour drive after forty, I was
about thirty, So thirty minutes past Santa Barbara, you get
to the Saint Inez Valley and you get to this
little town called Los Olivos.

Speaker 1 (07:45):
Which was hands down our fave and full discosure. We
were staying with mates at their ranch, so but it
would be a really great place. There's a calm in
the town. There would be Airbnbs around, but it's this
very small town. It's got forty nine wine tasting rooms.
And then we went to a very specific wine tasting

(08:05):
room what was it called Donica Donaka and that wash
and you and I got a flight, yes, which means
tasting all their wines. And do you remember the artwork
on the bottle was real nice.

Speaker 2 (08:16):
Yeah, it's really really cool. And Donaica would you want
to say how Doneka spelled.

Speaker 1 (08:22):
D o n n A c h.

Speaker 2 (08:26):
A d a h Yeah, don so it's a weird spelling.
It's like a Scottish or something spelling.

Speaker 1 (08:33):
I believe it's that's the heritage heritage driver.

Speaker 2 (08:37):
Yeah, but that was incredible wine. But Los Livs is
literally like a tiny town. And when I say like
a small town.

Speaker 1 (08:44):
It's the size of Neuruba.

Speaker 2 (08:47):
Yeah, no, no, no, it's a touch bigger. Like it's
got four streets. Well it's like just imagine a square, yeah,
with like you know across h not you know, like
across like one, two, three crosses. Yeah, you know, like
to one way to the other way. And that's the
whole town, got it? And it did. It's forty forty

(09:08):
seven or forty nine wine rooms.

Speaker 1 (09:10):
And apparently there's an annual jazz and olive festival held
every June. That's kill and it is the history of
it is that it was a stagecoach town back in
the day, which apparently as a result. Now, so kind
of you to yawn into the microphone.

Speaker 2 (09:28):
I didn't. I took the microphone away.

Speaker 1 (09:32):
And that's why apparently a lot of musicians live there now.

Speaker 2 (09:34):
Oh really.

Speaker 1 (09:35):
And our person was facilitating our wine tasting told me
that too.

Speaker 2 (09:39):
Oh cool. And Saint Ines was where Oliving Newton John
had her ranch?

Speaker 1 (09:45):
Was it Insane Inez too?

Speaker 2 (09:46):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (09:47):
And Michael Jackson.

Speaker 2 (09:51):
Neverland ranch's there as well. It's not too far from there. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (09:56):
And there's also a bit of a western field. Did
you notice it be like there was a sad Yeah,
apparently Santa Inez, which we didn't go to, which is
another little town which next time we should totally go there.
That's more western vibes. That's cool, yeah, And I think
that's where you've got like a saloon.

Speaker 2 (10:16):
That's cool.

Speaker 1 (10:17):
Yeah, which I'm sure you and I would love a whiskeier.

Speaker 2 (10:19):
But it's very it is very rural country area gorge
winery and rural country farming and et cetera, et cetera.

Speaker 1 (10:30):
Yeah, and so we pretty much just had a really
relaxing weekend. Got some rose from that Donnaker place. Yeah really,
y I mean I definitely want to go back there
and get their yeah, very nice, or their peanut because
you know me, I love a red.

Speaker 2 (10:45):
We drank a lot of the rose.

Speaker 1 (10:48):
It's sustainably produced to.

Speaker 2 (10:49):
Oh we like that.

Speaker 1 (10:51):
Yeah, yeah, I want to see if we can find
it in La.

Speaker 2 (10:54):
I'm sure we can, or you can order it. I'm
sure you can.

Speaker 1 (10:59):
Really really good, so yummy, okay. And then yeah, so
we just did a bit of pool time, hung with
our mates, beautiful like hung that with fed donkeys and
minature horses, just like chilledre in nature. Pretty much that
was our whole weekend weekend. And then we thought. On
the way back mee being a Christmas fienden, we went

(11:23):
via a town called Solvang, which is a Danish town.
What was your thoughts on solvan.

Speaker 2 (11:30):
I was literally like, this is like Europe in the
middle of America. It was crazy, and I think I
think the sign is like America is only Danish town
or something like that. So, but it is super cool.
It looks super European. It's actually bigger than Loss of Leavas.
It's way bigger. Like it's a proper town. And just

(11:53):
imagine a town that's like all like all Dutch architect architecture,
architecture can't say that word. Yeah, houses, architecture, food, everything
that's literally Dutch.

Speaker 1 (12:06):
And there's like hotels there, there's like I would say,
it's like designed for shopping, lots of Danish bakeries. What
did I love? There was a Crimbo shop.

Speaker 2 (12:19):
Oh yes, well that's because during Christmas it literally turns
into a full Christmas town.

Speaker 1 (12:28):
They call it jewel Fest or yule Fest.

Speaker 2 (12:32):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (12:32):
Would you know, I feel like being a Talian, you don't.

Speaker 2 (12:35):
Well that yule would be their word for Christmas. Yeah,
or like the Christmas period.

Speaker 1 (12:41):
Apparently from November twenty eighth to January fourth, it's crembo time.

Speaker 2 (12:46):
Wow.

Speaker 1 (12:47):
I will say it was busy.

Speaker 2 (12:49):
Afeah again, it's a weekend of town. People drive up,
you know on Saturday morning or Sunday morning.

Speaker 1 (12:56):
And here's what I think we should do on a
weekday early December. Yeah, just go up for a day
or a night. Yeah, just for the crimbo. I'd love that,
but just early December so it's christmasy.

Speaker 2 (13:10):
They go like a Tuesday or Wednesday.

Speaker 1 (13:12):
Yeah, one night. I think one night to'd be plenty.
It's not big enough that you'd need more than.

Speaker 2 (13:17):
That, No, definitely not.

Speaker 1 (13:18):
The other place where we nearly bought something was this
wood shop.

Speaker 2 (13:23):
Yeah, it was a winery. No sorry, let me start
that again. It was like a shop that had buys
things from winery, so all the wine barrels in the
wood and all that kinde of stuff.

Speaker 1 (13:36):
Yeah, like an inch thick oak barrel.

Speaker 2 (13:38):
Yeah, but then they turn that into furniture or kitchen things.
But they also sell like used wine barrels which look
so si so cool, which we nearly bought one, but
our apartment is small.

Speaker 1 (13:53):
Yeah, but that was seventy five bucks. That's pretty good.

Speaker 2 (13:55):
Yeah. If that was in Australia, we would have bought
like five.

Speaker 1 (14:00):
I know, I even said, a big, cool little bar ah, yeah,
be so cool.

Speaker 2 (14:06):
I always wanted to get one and seal it up
and make it into like a little like plunge. I
I know, I know, I reckon that would be fun.

Speaker 1 (14:13):
We can still do that boss, we can still do that.
The other thing, just if you ever are in California
at Christmas, I would totally pop that on your Christmas
list because they do candlelight tours of a Night. This
is all during duel Fest or yule Fest between November
twenty eighth and jan fourth. They also have this it's
called the Nicier Adventure. And he's a gnome and he

(14:39):
is like a mischievous gnome that you have to go
looking for throughout the town.

Speaker 2 (14:43):
That's cool. What do you get if you find him?

Speaker 1 (14:45):
I don't know, but there's all the you know, the
Scandinavian windmills are there. The feud is Danish, like I
don't know if you looked into any of the restaurants,
but they were like it looked like a Viking set.

Speaker 2 (14:54):
Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, I did seem sime.

Speaker 1 (14:58):
I would say, do that.

Speaker 2 (15:00):
Does that have the history of it? No?

Speaker 1 (15:02):
But I know I was reading past and it was.

Speaker 2 (15:05):
The Danish settlers.

Speaker 1 (15:08):
Yeah, and it was founded in like the eighteen hundreds
or nineteen nine, like it was founded yonks ago. It
looks like they've got like a lot of annual things
that happen like July. They do all this Fourth of
July stuff. September is like Danish days, Solvang pumpkin patch.

Speaker 2 (15:29):
Oh, you'd love that.

Speaker 1 (15:30):
Yeah. And then October I'm presuming Octoberfest. Is that a
thing here?

Speaker 2 (15:35):
Yeah, would be that's like more Is that more German?

Speaker 1 (15:38):
Yeah, they haven't said anything about it.

Speaker 2 (15:40):
That's like German.

Speaker 1 (15:42):
But yeah, really it looks like it's really cool. And
then November there's a turkey trot and there's also they
would do a lot for because remember Americans Halloween.

Speaker 2 (15:53):
Oh yes, yes, that would be a cool place.

Speaker 1 (15:55):
And then December is when it goes off. So that's
your Solvan Christmas tree lighting, the Uest Parade, Ullfest markets
like candle It tours, Cowboy Christmas, sign me up for that,
the Nice Year, the Little Mischievous Alf Tour. Yeah. So
it looks pretty cool.

Speaker 2 (16:14):
Well, I'm ready to go back anytime you want. I
think December, and obviously we have friends in the area,
I know, you know, so we can go.

Speaker 1 (16:24):
They've named their chalais their home, so good. So okay,
So we had this fun little getaway and then we
drove back. When Boss was talking about the options, you've
got to drive. So when we drove in. We went
via Santa Clarita, is that right? But coming back Boss
had a brilliant idea to come back via Calabasas, which
has a pumping air one.

Speaker 2 (16:46):
I love that this is part of our holiday holiday tour.

Speaker 1 (16:51):
It's like, guess what, there's an one we haven't been
to yet. And I was like, say, let's sir. Yeah,
So we went and had lunch. I got a really
yummy gluten free bread there too. We had lunch there
and it was just a nice pit stop on the
way home. I mean, Calabasas from here is only forty
five minutes to an hour depending on traffic.

Speaker 2 (17:10):
That day, it only took us like thirty five.

Speaker 1 (17:14):
Yeah, but I think on a weekday because I remember
I did that shoot out in the Goora Hills, Agora Hills,
which is super close to Calabasas.

Speaker 2 (17:23):
Yeah, and it took me like two hours, yeah, in
bad traffic. Yeah yeah. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (17:30):
But that's a good good thing to like add on
to your adventure. Another thing to think about adding on
if you haven't been there before. But because we had,
we didn't do it.

Speaker 2 (17:40):
Oh hi oh hi. Yeah. Well it's the same direction
from La so you drive there towards Ventura, Like then
you can either go one way to towards Ohai or
keep going straight to Santa Barbara. Like you could do
all of that in a few days because it's all
like within like a probably hour of each other.

Speaker 1 (18:01):
And then Ohai has heaps of wineries as well, reallyum
foodie vibe. Ohai felt a little boogie to meet a
lot of people, like a lot of actors and stuff
live in o High and they come into La for work.
Ohai also felt like a lot of like orange fields,
what are they called.

Speaker 2 (18:21):
Orange field citrus farms?

Speaker 1 (18:24):
No, it's not plantation. Is it plantation? No? I don't
think so, you know, a lot of orange fields and
hikes and stuff out the farms, fruit farm, orchard, orchard,
orange orchards or is that just a stone fruit?

Speaker 2 (18:37):
I feel like that's a stone fruit thing.

Speaker 1 (18:39):
Okay, well that's the word. I was like, orchards, that's
not stone fruit.

Speaker 2 (18:44):
I don't know.

Speaker 1 (18:44):
Orange orchards, orange fields fields. There's a lot of that,
and people take a lot of photos with that. And
when we stayed a really cool little ranch out there,
that was like the one interesting thing to just be
aware of with Ohai. You can't airbnbre not. No, it's
not a thing. So you have to go like book.
We booked like direct through a little in little ranch

(19:09):
and there's one real boogie.

Speaker 2 (19:10):
It's like a little bougie motel. That's what it is.

Speaker 1 (19:14):
There was bougie places. Yeah, we went for our birthdays.

Speaker 2 (19:18):
Yeah, that's right last year.

Speaker 1 (19:19):
And what are you thinking, adventualise you want to do
for our birthday this year?

Speaker 2 (19:23):
Whatever you want to do, mother, We haven't even thought
about it, No, I've We've been stressed with other things.
We have a lot going on.

Speaker 1 (19:32):
One other thing to mention about Santa Inez Valley is
it's yes, three hours from La but it's four hours
from san France. So I know your best he lives
in San Fran. It's a really good halfway meeting point.
That is, like anyone that's got a car is able
to get You.

Speaker 2 (19:50):
Have already spoken to him about it.

Speaker 1 (19:52):
No, I know about a sort of people or if
people are in San Fran and want to do like
you know, because Napa is closer to San Fran or
San Fran is not. Yeah, Apple Valley so it's like
another wine town.

Speaker 2 (20:03):
Yeah, but you know, yeah, different kind of so you're
saying you could say you were doing some sort of
driving trip. Yeah, you could do like la Ohai, Santa Barbara,
Los Alevos or the Saint Anez Valley and then keep
going the next day three four hours you're in San Fran.

Speaker 1 (20:25):
Well, you'd probably probably be like da da da, Like
there'd be more of that. Just something to think about.

Speaker 2 (20:34):
Yeah, so yeah, you could. You could totally hire a
cart or a win, a bago or an RVO. That's
just the brand of like an RV.

Speaker 1 (20:45):
Okay, boo, what were your top three highlights of the
weekend away.

Speaker 2 (20:52):
I obviously just really loved relaxing and chilling. I thought
that was very nice. I definitely miss being in nature
and just the quiet and all that, so definitely fulfilled that.
I just like being with you and our friends. I

(21:13):
think that's beautiful and yeah, that's it nice. What about you?

Speaker 1 (21:22):
I would say the sunsets there were off the Richter scale,
really beautiful sunsets. And like the animals, not just like
the donkeys and the mini horse, but like those they
called them turkey vultures.

Speaker 2 (21:34):
Oh yeah, they're flying around really low.

Speaker 1 (21:37):
And eagles really nice. And then yeah, just connection time
with our friends so nice that they were so like
it made me excited to be able to do that
for other people one day when we have our own space.
It's really made me think, oh, I'd love to have,
you know, a ranch somewhere out here, in a ranch
in Australia or something one day. Wouldn't that be care will?

Speaker 2 (21:59):
Yeah? They had it really. I'm well set up as well,
Like they're on one side of the house. You get
your own when like the guest room is like you
feel very private, Yes, like you've got your own bathroom
and you're well designed. Yeah, it's really smart.

Speaker 1 (22:16):
And for me also, I get nervous where the Loui
is when I go to someone else.

Speaker 2 (22:20):
Yes, my own inscrew. Yes, well yeah, you get this
was perfect.

Speaker 1 (22:24):
And they had that box with the bird sounds in
the bathroom. I love so it sensors when you're in
the room and all these birds start and it just
cal't me the ft out. It's so good.

Speaker 2 (22:35):
I Matt didn't Okay, I tell you why. I didn't
like it because I couldn't figure out where the sound
was coming from. But then when you knew, and then
I was like, why is there fucking bird noises?

Speaker 1 (22:45):
I loved.

Speaker 2 (22:46):
It's like nine ten o'clock at night. I've already like.

Speaker 1 (22:48):
I want to get one and I want to get
the job.

Speaker 2 (22:51):
And I was like, oh my god, why is there
bird noises?

Speaker 1 (22:53):
And then we were in bed and I was googling
how to buy them, and so the sounds coming out
of my phone and Matt's like, turn that off.

Speaker 2 (22:59):
Yeah, it's been too much at night.

Speaker 1 (23:01):
No, I love. Do you know who would love it?
Wendy Avery?

Speaker 2 (23:04):
Why, oh that's right up her rally random bird noises.

Speaker 1 (23:07):
Yes, it's calming. You know that psychologically when we hear
bird noises, we feel calm as humans.

Speaker 2 (23:15):
Noises Like when I hear it, I think it's like
the morning, not like a nighttime.

Speaker 1 (23:20):
They make hell from bar and Bay. You know, they
make so much sound at nighttime, less sound at my sunset.
They go to bed and they make all those sounds,
you know. I love. There's also Oceana wind. You've got
enough of that?

Speaker 2 (23:37):
Yeah, I do. Maybe the Oceana will be nice.

Speaker 1 (23:40):
Okay, I'm I'm open. I would be super calming.

Speaker 2 (23:44):
But yes it was. It was nice, relaxing weekend and
I loved it.

Speaker 1 (23:47):
And just while I have you you've been back in
La now for three months. Yeah, how do you feel.

Speaker 2 (23:56):
Normal? It's like a weird ant are, but yeah, it
just feels normal being back here. Yeah. Yeah, I love that,
love that. Yeah, I'm loving this sum. I was going
to say, like bi coastal lifestyle, but it's Australian and
by country lifestyle.

Speaker 1 (24:17):
Yeah, it's not as easy as people think though, I'll
tell you that.

Speaker 2 (24:19):
No fucking way, it's harder. Yeah, it's hard, but also
I mean it's fucking cool. Yeah, it's called like I
was in Australia for three months, then I've been back
here for three months and then who knows what's going
to happen next?

Speaker 1 (24:38):
Else would be fun at Christmas New York? Yeah, or
like gain that early December.

Speaker 2 (24:44):
Kind of well we went last year early December. We
went late and mid Nomber, which was fucking cold enough
but beautiful.

Speaker 1 (24:52):
I think you could do it short, like just three nights.

Speaker 2 (24:56):
If it's not your first time, you could, yeah.

Speaker 1 (24:58):
And then you wouldn't get over the you just be
like it's cold, I don't care.

Speaker 2 (25:03):
H No. I think you need like a day or
two to get over the shock of the cold, and
then you're okay after that, So anyway, I think we
could definitely like do something else like that.

Speaker 1 (25:15):
Well, Booth, thanks for this little travel guide.

Speaker 2 (25:18):
You're welcome.

Speaker 1 (25:19):

Speaker 2 (25:21):
