Speaker 1 (00:02):
Get a. I'm Laala Berry, nutritionist, author, actor, TV presenter,
and professional overshaer. This podcast is all about celebrating failure
because I believe it's a chance for us to learn,
grow and face our blind spots. Each week, I'll interview
a different guest about their highs as well as their lows,

(00:26):
all in a bid to inspire us to fearlessly fail. Hello,
Welcome to Fearlessly Failing. Today. It's a wellness episode for
a couple of reasons with me. By the way, I'm
a nutritionist. I don't know if you know that. Anyway,
I'm nutritionist. I'm a slashy, I'm a nutritionist, actor, podcast

(00:48):
st writer, all the things. Anyway, We're having a wellness
episode today, simple spring cleaning, detox. It's September. There's this
massive I believe it's a full moon eclipse. I hope
I'm saying that correct in the sign of Pisces as
we record this or the day it comes out will

(01:08):
actually be the eclipse day. And it feels like a
really good time. While we're in this season of Virgo,
the nine months in a we're in a year nine
cycle to do a big spring clean and detox and
declutter and clear out. So I'm going to walk you
through it. There's a few reasons why this episode exists.

(01:31):
Number One, we had Yogi Meg on the pod last
week and I got a few people writing to me
being like, yo, I miss the wellness style episodes. Can
you bring the old one back? And I'm like, say less.
The other thing is the pod that was going to
come out today is embargoed until the first of October

(01:51):
because it's got a time in with a movie release.
How exciting. It was so much fun. By the way,
we got scent screeners, which which means you get to
watch the movie before it comes out and it's all
watermarked with your name on it. Wild so fun. Anyway,
I digress. So that's why today is a nutrition one

(02:11):
oh one episode with yours truly me and I have
just before I dive in, I do want to let
you know I have just spent the last hour or
so really planning out the podcast for the rest of
the year, and my friends, it is looking the good. O's.
We have got some really big dogs in the film

(02:32):
space coming on, an incredible celebrated photographer, coming on, an
actress whose movie is coming out really soon, coming on
trying to book in another big Aussie actor. I want
to bring on some call behind the scenes people like
costume design, set design, movie editors, just cool people doing

(02:53):
really cool things. And yeah, I'm really pumped about it,
really really pumped about it. And of course I can't
believe it. But next week I turn forty, as does
the Boss, so you need to do some kind of
fortieth special in some capacity. I love that the Pod
turned six two weeks ago or a week and a

(03:13):
half ago, and then the Boss and I turn forty.
I love it. So the Pod, in a weird way,
is our child. Okay, anyway, we're going to talk about
spring detoc. So in Australia it's September time, it's spring.
Here in America it is autumn, or as Americans like
to call it, file. It is ful and that means

(03:36):
pumpkin spice. That means pumpkin spice, lattes. What else do
they love? They love a pumpkin pie, maple maple donuts,
maple gleaz donuts are a thing. What else is really festive?
That all this pumpkin stuff's coming out, cramberries, Thanksgivings coming
up in America? So it's all very it's already starting

(03:59):
to feel all like, not quite festive, but it feels
like Halloween's not far away, you know what I mean,
which is obviously October anyway. So I'm going to talk
to you today through a really simple, gentle spring detox.
If you're driving, just make mental note of these things.
If you're at home, whip out a piece of paper.

(04:20):
I'm going to give you notes on each topic and
take what feels good for you to try it on.
Really good to start these habits on the eclipse, because
the eclipse is a big ruffle up in the sign
of Pisces, which is the direct opposite of Virgo, so
it will affect both Pisces and Virgo and probably the
other I believe we're mutable signs, so that would mean

(04:41):
it's going to affect Sad and Gemini as well. Anyway,
I digress. So if you want to do a clean
out a like a bit of a like cull, this
is the time to do it mentally, physically, emotionally. This
bit me being a nutritionist, obviously, I'm going to speak
a bit to the actual physical things that we can

(05:03):
do to create a little spring detox kind of vibe
to my American listeners, just look at this as a
full detox or autumn autumnal detox. Okay, first things first, water,
I know, it's easiest thing under the sun. I have
just noticed, especially in our lakes, it's really hot right now.
I haven't been drinking enough. You want to be drinking

(05:24):
alita for every twenty two kilograms of body weight that
you are, so I need to be drinking three litters
a day. I can promise you. I'm not drinking three
litters of water a day, but I'm just slowly trying
to up it and up it and up it. I
also teach a lot of hot yogurt, which means I
also take electrolytes on the days that I teach. But
I really think that we if you have more water

(05:47):
in your system. Number one, it helps with digestion and
moving things through the digestive system. One of the first
signs of dehydration is actually hunger, so you want to
always be hydrating good quality water as well. In Australia,
we're really lucky. If you're in America, of course, make
sure it's filtered and just constantly. You want to be

(06:10):
drinking water all the time. And remember if you have
like coffee, love me some coffee, coffee straight into the veins.
Do not worry. I'm not gonna pull coffee off you
on this detos, you know. But if you have coffee,
it's diuretic, right, so it can dehydrate you. It is
gonna drop fluid from the body, so just be mindful
of that. And then of course booze if you have
a veno. Matt and I going out with mates at

(06:32):
Saturday night here in La We're gonna go to mate's
place for dinner tonight. I'm gonna have a couple of
glasses of red wine. But that means I need to
keep my hydration up. Yeah, So a leader for every
twenty two kilograms of water per day. Obviously, if you're
going from drinking like I don't know, like one Stanley bottle,
which is usually about a lid, and then you're gonna

(06:53):
triple it straight away, you're gonna be running to the
lou all the time. So just do it gradually over
a couple of days, like build it up. The other thing,
if you want to stimulate, like a mini detox or
a mini cleanse, is just a little bit of lemon
juice in warm watar first thing in the morning. So
just get a lemon, none of the store bought like
packet lemon juice monarchy that is everywhere in America. Dolding

(07:15):
an actual lemon, roll it like what Jamie Oliver does,
like roll it on a chopping board, cut it in half,
half in warm water, first in the morning. Really good
for digestion, really good for stimulating digestive enzymes as well.
So first thing in the morning, bit of lemon juice.
It's also quite a nice ritual and habit to build.
We'll talk a little bit about building and swapping habits

(07:36):
a little later in this chat. But the habit of
getting up and doing something for your health, like does
this mental it's like a switch in your brain, Like
it's a quick switch to being like, oh, I've looked
after myself today. I don't want to I don't want
to mess up. So again, I'll talk more about habits
a little later. But lemon juice in warm water, first
thing in the morning, great option when it comes to

(07:57):
habit swapping. Okay, not that you need to know this,
but the battery, the battery died, so put new ones
in and we're gonna keep going again. Matt will probably
kill me for telling you that, because he could have
edited it to make it sound perfect. So anyway, here
we are. So the next one is veggies. Obviously this
is not rocket scientists. Scientists, this is not rocket science.

(08:20):
So veggies, we know are high in phytochemicals. That is
just a fancy saying for plant nutrients. The more varied
the better, So like red things have got lycopene in them,
and purple things have got I never say this word right,
but anthroocyanides in them. Anyway, my point is different colored

(08:41):
foods contain different antioxidants and therefore have different benefits for
our health. So the more varied and the different colors
that you can consume the better. If you have the
time and something near you that like a farmer's market,
that's going to be a really great way to get
a wide variety of fresh fruits and veggies. And also
at the same time, they're going to be seasonal, because

(09:03):
they're probably going to be from a local ish radius
to wherever your farmer's market is, so it is a
great way to one support the local guys, but also
get yourself seasonal fresh produce that is varied Obviously with
veggies and having a lot of veggies in your diet,

(09:23):
you're upping the fiber content as well. Loads of studies
done on the health benefits of a diet that's really
high in fiber. But also again not rocket science science, like,
if you don't have enough fiber in your diet, you're
probably going to be consipraated. You're not going to the
loo enough, and then you've got all these kind of
lake toxins hanging around in your bottle rooney longer than
they should be. Right, So up the veggies gang, super

(09:45):
simple and make it varied, like cook a curry one
night or pop them in a salad the next day,
or you know, Boss night has made fresh tacos. You know,
just make the diet as varied as you can. It's
quite hard for us being humans. We love routine and ritual.
It's like one of the things that us humans just love.

(10:05):
So do try and mix it up if you can. Alrighty,
next one, sugar and seed oils have got to be
kicked to the curb. Obviously, sugar is a tricky one,
especially women when it comes to certain times the month
and where their cycles at. We can crave things like
literally a few days ago, I was like, to Matter,

(10:27):
all I want is Trader Shows does this pumpkin spice
sheet cake. I'm like, I really want that pump and
spice sheet cake and he's like, absolutely not. You know,
feel rotten. After that, I didn't realize that I had
a little bit of PMS and my you know what
I mean. And I didn't realize that it was my
cycle coming on. So just be aware because I think
if you're aware of that, then that kind of like

(10:47):
knowledge is power, right, And I didn't end up getting
said sheetcake. That's not saying I won't, but I didn't.
So you really want to watch the refined sugars as
well as seed oils and seed oils we know cheap
oils that are used in a lot of products that
basically when they're heated, they're double bonds break because seed

(11:08):
oils usually are poly unsaturated fats, so polly meaning many
and so those many double bonds break when they're exposed
to heat, and then that makes them rancid. And there's
a beautiful author called David Gillespie that talks a lot
about seed oils and sugar actually, and he talks about
their DNA damage that rancid seed oils can cause. So

(11:32):
a good way to kick the sugar and seed oils
is avoid a lot of processed junk food because they
usually contain both. So you know, like chocky bars, a
lot of packeted ready to go things. Obviously fast food's
going to have both in them as well. Especially here
in America, the FDA laws aren't as strict as the

(11:55):
TGA laws in Australia, and like Matt and I have
to read, like dressings and seed oils can sneak into
a lot of like ready to go dressings and things
like that as well, and saucy kind of things. So
Matt is a stickler for making everything from scratch at
home because Italian loves all that. But I just think
be aware, you know, when you're shopping, always look out

(12:16):
for seed oils, always look out for sugars. And you
know there are so many apps out there that can
help you along the way as well. Okay, another one again,
This isn't rocket science, but daily movement. And that doesn't
mean you go to the gym and like bust iron
every single day, but it means mixing it up again.

(12:37):
We want varied. That is definitely the theme when it
comes to cleaning up the diet or the kind of
like habits. So one day, maybe you go for a
little stroll. One day you might go for an intense hike.
I've got this mate here in La Chloe. We hike
together on Sunday afternoons and it's so kill I love it.
We get a good chit chat in, but we also

(12:58):
walk for two hours and it makes it so much
more fun than if I did it on my own.
Hiking is a really good one. Obviously we're spoiled here
in the Hollywood Hills in California, But like you know,
you've got if you're in Malbs, you've got the Tan
all that kind of thing, sids, you got bond Oi
to Bronze beautiful hikes, okay, and then Byron lighty, need

(13:19):
I say anymore? Byron is just all hikes. It's beautiful.
But daily movement could be a pilates class, it could
be a yog's class. It could be you know, a
little stroll like sometimes Matt and I just go for
a stroll around the streets to the farmer's market. Like
it doesn't need to be intense. We try to do
two to three weight sessions a week and they're just

(13:40):
like twenty five minute thirty minute weight sessions that we
work ourselves through together. So that's I think, make it manageable,
don't make it too crazy. Sleep. I know everyone knows
sleep is like a super food when it comes to
looking after our health. And if you're kind of like
me and into their anti aging space, it's really cool
as well. So you want to be aiming for kind

(14:01):
of like anywhere between seven and nine hours a night.
And then I was always taught at school where I
study nutritional medicine that every hour before midnight is equivalent
to two after midnight, so the earlier to bed, the better.
I know. Everyone's lifestyles are different though, so you know,
pick your battles, do what you can, no rules, right,

(14:23):
but I do love that like getting to bed early
and then getting up early. Boss is opposite. He loves
to have a slow morning and he'll work into the
night often. Fresh air. You in Australia are so lucky
when it comes to fresh air. LA is quite polluted,
so our hair isn't super super fresh. But getting out

(14:43):
into nature, like getting near a beach or a body
of water, hiking out in nature. You might have heard
of the word biophilia. It's the healing power of mother
Nature on human beings. It's like just getting out into nature.
You'll know, does the air all smell different, it all
feel different, just because there's a much denser, you know,

(15:05):
array of trees and plants. So definitely like getting out
into nature. I would say at least once a week
of just kind of like immersing yourself. Great way to
catch up with a bar, go for a walk in nature.
Love that This one I love because I have four
virgos in my child and we're in burgo season right now.
De clutter, so decluttering again. I'm not to keep bringing

(15:30):
this back to us, but we live in a one
bedroom apartment in LA and so like, we can't afford
to have clutter because it quickly becomes messy. And so
there's something really freeing about always cleaning out or like
if one new thing comes in, something else has to
go out. It's a really nice way to live. But
also just even if you look at a space that

(15:52):
you want to declutter, like I'm looking at my desk
right now, it's pretty messy. I'll probably try and fix
that up after this pod, like little areas that you
can create cleanliness in and kind of like this cleanse feeling.
Do it by just decluttering or like going through, like
don't be afraid of like cleaning out your wardrobe. This

(16:13):
is the time to do it. Not to get hippie
and woo woo on you, but astrologically speaking, this is
the time to do all your cleanouts. You're decluttering, go
through your clothes, give some stuff you don't want to
your buds. Matt and I do that all the time.
We've got a friend, we gift our stuff too, and
if she doesn't want any of it, she's got a
friend she gives it too, and it kind of feels nice.

(16:33):
You're kind of like knowing that you're giving it to
other people really cool. So just something to think about
on that front. With all of this, the home, the exercise,
the food, keep it simple, like, don't over complicate stuff.
Don't feel like, now, oh my god, I've got to
start taking a million supplements. No, keep it simple, keep

(16:55):
it really really simple, Like you can plan out a
few meals for the week, but like cooking at home,
keeps things nice and easy. Make enough for lunch to
take to work the next day, all that kind of stuff.
But really try not to overcomplicate things, because if it
gets too complicated when we're tired, complicated can feel hard,
and when things feel hard, we give up. So we

(17:17):
want to make it easy and achievable. And by keeping
it like simple across the board, it makes for more ease,
especially when you don't have like the willpower all the time.
So always keep it simple, be prepared, don't overthink it. Simplify, simplify, simplify.
I think that's a really good mentality to have. Teas

(17:42):
Teas are a great way to add nutrition to your
diet without necessarily needing to take too many supplements. There
are some really amazing detox tees, liver tea's, gut cleansed
teas out there that have just got really nice herbs
in them, Like, ah, what did I have the other day?
I had like a detail had like dandelion in it
and stinging nattle. And so don't be afraid of adding

(18:06):
a tea into your daily ritual as well. Again, when
we talk about swapping habits in a bit, having a
tea in the place of that second or third coffee
in the afternoon can be a nice habit or like,
for me, there's this soda drink I love over here
called ollipop. It's really low sugar, high probiotics, but it
feels like you're drinking in Coca cola, or as TikTok

(18:26):
likes to call it, a fridge ciggy. Well, so it's
really good, but it is it's still got a couple
of grams of sugar in it, and it's like it's
a great healthy alternative to soda. But if I'm trying
to kick that habit, I could swap my ollipop out
for a detox tea, so you know, just little swaps. Okay, yes,
now I am up to the habit swapping bits. So

(18:48):
that's where you take a habit out that you've noticed
you're doing and you swap it with something else. So
for me, I really didn't like the morning scrolling in bed, right,
I took the habit out with tongue scraping. Have you
heard of that? It sounds weird, I know, but it's
an ae of eighty practice where you literally get up
in the morning and you have to do it as
soon as you get up, otherwise you essentially swallow and

(19:12):
reabsorb all the gunk that's on your tongue from sleeping overnight.
So I've got this little I think it's copper. It's
a tongue scraper and they're like five bucks. You get
them at health food stores. I'm sure you can order
them online as well. And I just get up in
the morning and I'll scrape my tongue before even we like,
I'll literally get up, spread scrape my tongue. The tongue
scrapers in the bathroom. Oh, then go wat. Then I'll

(19:34):
put the coffee pot on. Then I will let myself scroll,
which I still do, by the way, but I don't
do it in bed anymore. So just little habit swaps
like that, or maybe you're like, do you know what
I want to do? The lemon juice and warm water,
Like Lola said earlier, I'm going to get out of
bed and I'm going to pop the kettle on and
do lemon juice and warm water before I have my

(19:55):
morning coffee. So it's nothing too crazy, but like the
herbal tea one could be a really nice one if
you know you're used to having, like I don't know,
Timtams in the arbow swap, the timtams out, make a
batch of like I don't know, raw date balls or something.
There's a million recipes of them. I've got gazoo and
you can write to me and I'll give you a recipe.

(20:16):
And I just wrote a recipe this morning for maple
date balls for like pumpkin spice season, and I can
send you that recipe if you want it, just write
to me. But if you swap like the afternoon treaty
that might be like refined sugar, might have some you know,
seed oils and stuff in and if it's a Timmy
or a I don't know, a choky bar or something,

(20:38):
because Australia has the best chocolates, and then swap that
out for like homemade date balls. You can keep him
in the freezer, keep him in the fridge, and you
just gotta you know, have one or two like don't
go overboard, and then just have a handful of nuts
with it as well, so you're getting some good fats.
The fat is going to do a few things. It's
going to help to balance blood sugar levels from eating something.

(20:59):
So also there's cinnamon in this recipe too, which also
helps to modulate and balance blood sugar levels just something
to think about. But yeah, try to play with the
habit swapping, so there's something you're already doing, to swap
it out for something else and then just go about
your day. I quite like it. I think it's kind
of easy set intentions. I like that I'm a bit
of a planner. I get out my journal every morning.

(21:22):
I don't necessarily journal, but I plan the day out
like I have a list everything I want to achieve.
I also am a higher achieve so I often forget
things like as in all be like far out, I
was gonna email my health insurance or da da da,
and it's just like those mundane things I forget about.
So by having a list that I write in the morning,
I can be like, right, I'm doing all of this.

(21:43):
Sometimes it feels really nice to do that list the
night before so that you wake up and that list
is already to go, and if you need to add
or take something off it, you can kind of like
do a little stock take of it in the morning
while you're having your morning coffee. I'm just going to
pop this one in here. It's totally not you don't
have to do it, but a little mini digital detos

(22:03):
I'm not saying go off socials for a month or
anything like that, but just give yourself like an hour
free a day where you like. What I do is
I pop my phone on charge in the bedroom and
I don't touch my phone. I work on my laptop
and if someone my text message is a link to
my laptop, so if someone needs to get a hold
of me, they can. My laptop will also ring if

(22:24):
someone needs to call me. So and I just put
the phone in the other room so that I'm not
mindlessly scrolling TikTok and Instagram. I still love to do
those things, but I do pick times of the day
when I want to be really productive or just pop
them away for a little bit. So that's what I
mean when I say digital detops. You could just set
an hour each day of like, do you know what,

(22:44):
I'm not going to look at anything on socials for
this amount of time. There is a product that a
couple of my friends have got called the Brick, I believe,
and that's where you can lock your social media accounts
for like certain periods of time and it will not
let you in even if you want to interesting. I
definitely could not do that just being honest. The other

(23:05):
thing is like having tech free zones in the house,
Like maybe you like your habit is scrolling a lot
in bed, maybe like effet, I'm not gonna scroll in bed,
like I'm going to watch a movie in bed, or
I'm going to read in bed, or like having a
part of the house where you're just not on the phone.
That can be hard, especially with apartment living where it's
like it all feels like one space. But just something

(23:25):
to think about. For me, what works is literally just
putting my phone in another room on charge, don't think
about it, don't look at it, and then when I
look at it, I'm like, oh, I may as well
check if like there's been any engagement on my last
post or whatever. You know. I mean, I look at
it more through a business lens as opposed to looking
at it mindlessly, as like a weird mind numbing thing

(23:47):
that it can kind of do as well. Something I
want to put out here is an offer as something
for your spring cleanse digital. I don't know why the
digital things are then, but you know what I mean,
like this spring Virgo season cleans, maybe you do decide
to start journaling, Maybe you do, like I have three

(24:07):
different calendars low I know, so like I'm always taking
stock and I know, like I'll have things planned out
for the week ahead, and I'll know like if for
some reason, I'm like, ah, things are getting like or
I book a gig or you know, I'm always auditioning,
so if I book a gig or something, I know,
Like I like to have my diaries all out so
that it's really easy for me to like reschedule things.

(24:30):
But the journaling is really cool because you can set
intentions for yourself and I love to do a lot
of planning at the start of the month. We're still
in the start of the month, you can do some
real planning about what you want to achieve in September,
and then first week of October you can take stock
and look back over the month and be like, right,
what have I achieved? What have I done? Have I
like moved the needle in this scenario. Just a fun

(24:51):
thing to think about. So that's that's what I want
to talk to you about, just essentially creating a simple
Virgo season clean and then a lot of the astrologers
are saying this is a big like giving back to
yourself time and like leading of the things that don't
serve you, letting go of the stuff you might have
felt like you've been pushing really hard for and it's

(25:13):
just not working in your favor. Like, don't be afraid
to let go of all that and just focus on
the stuff that is flowing and the stuff that is
coming in. This is a time a clip season is
like where they say fated things happen, So like, really
take stock and notice what feels like clunky for you
versus what feels like, Ah, this is flowing for me.

(25:34):
This feels like it's working. Something to think about, all right, Gang,
I hope you like your wellness ep as. Always write
to me on Insta if you want a recipe for
the healthy maple date balls in the place of your
Timmy's for your RVO snack, right to me. I'll send
it to you. In fact, I should put it on
my substack tomorrow. I might put on my substack that

(25:56):
but then it's easy to send to everyone. All right, anyway,
love that I'm just planning my life. I felt loud. Anyway,
think you wonderful, big love, have a ripper a ripper
ripper week, go out and do the stuff you love.
And I hope like one of these things resonates with
you and that you can take it and use it
in your world. And just remember, keep it simple, go gentle,

(26:20):
Trust what's coming up for you, like your intuition is
never wrong. Trust what's coming up for you, and let
