Speaker 1 (00:01):
Welcome to Fearlessly Failing hot Seat. In this EPP, I
fire rapid questions at one of our fearlessly failing guests. PS.
I'm gonna be honest with you. I'm not so good
at the rapid part. I get too intrigued by the
awesome answers. Now a new EPP is going to drop
every Wednesday, so enjoy this shorter style episode of fearlessly
(00:23):
Failing Hot Seat. What is your full name? You don't
have to say full fall, but you can.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
I will said do. I used to be always like
a little hesidant. Linda Irene Duncan Irene is a family name.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
I know that that's Australian, Australia very ausy, Okay, sweet
or savory?
Speaker 3 (00:40):
My friend? Do I have to pick? I would probably
go sweet.
Speaker 1 (00:46):
Do you have a favorite like meal? Sweet meal?
Speaker 2 (00:49):
Anything with caramel or toffee?
Speaker 3 (00:53):
My language?
Speaker 1 (00:55):
And I have to ask you since you often gift
Australiana chocolates australianclcolates versus American chocolate.
Speaker 2 (01:01):
I mean, I'm sorry to the Americans, but there's no comparison.
Australian chocolate rules. Now I know I asked you this
in our long form chat.
Speaker 1 (01:09):
But I have to ask if there is a pintery
moment from being on set filming The Queen's Jewels where
you're just like, this is happening. You can share the
same or something different.
Speaker 2 (01:20):
Yeah, I would probably share something different by way of
when I was on set and one of the casts
came over to me and said, hey, Linda, like, can
we arch you for X, Y and Z.
Speaker 3 (01:29):
And I kind of looked over my shoulder like all right,
that's me.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
Yes, they're asking me because I'm the producer and the producer,
I amn't sure.
Speaker 3 (01:36):
And I answered the question.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
I was like, oh my gosh, like they're coming to
me because that's my job.
Speaker 1 (01:40):
And also I loved seeing you in the movie.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
Yeah I know.
Speaker 1 (01:44):
It wasn't that cool double be like, hang on, we
know who that is? Oh, we know who that is too?
Speaker 3 (01:49):
Yeah? Yeah, it was fun.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
Yeah. We actually got in trouble for that scene, because
trouble as in cheeky trouble. I walked over to Josh
and he started like whispering funny things in my ear
and we started thinking, okay, like we can hear you, Like, Josh.
Speaker 3 (02:02):
Livin, do we can hear you? I'm like, oh, sorry,
I'm blaming the director.
Speaker 1 (02:06):
I love that you do like the troubled kid kids
on set.
Speaker 3 (02:09):
I know it was fun.
Speaker 1 (02:10):
Okay do you have a favorite nature spot? I feel
like Aussies know their nature really well.
Speaker 3 (02:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
I mean, look, I would say only because I've done
it a few times now and I absolutely loved it.
Is the Great Barrier reef. Oh yeah, I love it
and I take friends there. I took Josh there. We
celebrate Christmas at Christmas and it's just a really special
spot and there's so much natural marine life. I just
loved it. I love it so much there and just locally,
like I just love to go down to the beach
(02:38):
at Santa Monica. Love it so much.
Speaker 1 (02:39):
It's like the perfect reset, right Yeah.
Speaker 2 (02:41):
Absolutely hearing the ocean and knowing that it's the Pacific
Ocean and I put my feet in the water. It's
the same water that hits the coast of Australia.
Speaker 3 (02:47):
I love it.
Speaker 1 (02:48):
Oh, I've never even put that to into it, Like
I've never had that. Okay, do you have a favorite city.
Speaker 2 (02:57):
I mean, look, I would say my favorite city is
wherever my loved ones are.
Speaker 3 (03:01):
But that's like that's a cop out. I know, but
I really mean it.
Speaker 2 (03:04):
I absolutely love Sydney, I do. I just really love
that Harbor. I think is so spectacular and it's not
a big carbere, it's quite intimate. I love taking people there,
like as a proud Australian and come to city Harbor.
Speaker 3 (03:16):
I absolutely, absolutely, absolutely love it.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
There is something about when I got off the plane
in New York and I was like, oh wow, this
this is coming to reality, and so it has a
very special place in my heart.
Speaker 3 (03:26):
Just not in winter, but a very special place in
my heart. We're just fun to look at, yeah, exactly.
Speaker 1 (03:31):
It's so Christmasy as well. It's really pretty us being Aussie's.
I feel like Christmas is a really big deal to Aussie's.
Do you feel that as one hundred and last year
was the only year that we haven't gone home for
Christy and we're like, oh no, we're going. We're going
to make sure we go home now. But there's something
about an Aussie Christmas.
Speaker 2 (03:46):
There is, And I think because like when I try
to explain it to Americans, it's like the August here
is our December because everybody's on vacation and so everybody's
off and also it's just nice to be able to
sit outside. I see, La gets it. Like in winter here,
you're still in T shirts. Yeah, and so it's got.
Speaker 3 (04:05):
A warmer vibe to it. And so I like being
in T shirt and shorts.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
And I've done the New York winters and they've been
amazing for Christmas. But the same about being home with
family because everybody's not working.
Speaker 1 (04:15):
Yeah, it's very rancho relax Ober.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
Yes, absolutely.
Speaker 1 (04:19):
Do you have a non negotiable something that you're just
like every day or like I have to do this thing?
Speaker 2 (04:25):
Yeah. My non negotiable is that I will never not
be loyal to the people I love. If you come
after my people, I'm my mother bear. I'll whack you
with my poor What star signed? Are you Aquarius? My wackadoodle?
Speaker 1 (04:37):
Oh yeah yeah, yeah, yeah yeah.
Speaker 2 (04:39):
Oh.
Speaker 3 (04:39):
I love my people. I love my people.
Speaker 2 (04:42):
I'm very protective of the people that I love, very protective.
Speaker 1 (04:45):
I think that's an amazing trait to have.
Speaker 3 (04:47):
Thank you.
Speaker 1 (04:48):
Do you have any advice for someone watching this? It's like,
oh my goodness, this beautiful person's gone out and lived
their dream. How do I cultivate that in myself? What
advice do you have? For someone that wants to their dream,
but it is a bit scared to jump off the
cliffs to speak.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
You know, it's gonna sound so simple, but jump, like
what's the absolute worst that could happen?
Speaker 3 (05:10):
You have to hear a reset, You'll have an enormous learning.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
When I was at National Australian Bank, I was asked
to go into private banking, and I mean, I can't
do that. I don't know how rich people live like I.
You know, I came from poverty and it was one
of the best moves of my life and some of
the best clients I ever met, really and I had
to be talked into it absolutely really yeah, And because
I just I thought I would be a fraud, like
I don't know how wealthy people live, and it was
(05:35):
one of the best moves of my career.
Speaker 3 (05:37):
And I had to be told to do it.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
So I would be like, like, jump and listen to
the people around you that are supporting you, because everybody
wants to see you live your best life. Anyone who
loves you is going to say be true to yourself,
do what makes you happy, like and if you have
people in your life that aren't telling you that, maybe
it's time to call them. But my experience has been
the people around me are like a human parish.
Speaker 3 (06:00):
Yeah, and I love it. Jump jump jump jump jump.
Speaker 1 (06:03):
Oh yeah, Oh I love that. Oh I love it.
Speaker 3 (06:06):
I love it.
Speaker 1 (06:07):
I love it. I'm all for a jumper, jumper, risk it,
give it a.
Speaker 3 (06:11):
Give it a red hot, Yeah, give it a crack up.
Speaker 2 (06:13):
So Australian, I know it's coming out, and he says,
I know, I want to say.
Speaker 1 (06:16):
It too, And I know we touched on this in
a longer chat. But just for someone that might have
just got off that corntus flight fresh out of either
drama school they're trained as a director or a writer
in Australia, because in Australia when we go to acting school,
the holy grailers Hollywood and America and just working on
(06:38):
those big projects and also just having access to opportunity.
And I think there's something amazing and exciting when you
get off that corntous flight, but there's also something really daunting.
So what advice have you got for someone that's like
a first time or in America pussy yeah, chasing their dream.
(06:59):
They've packed up there, you know, all their possessions are
in two suitcases.
Speaker 3 (07:04):
Oh gosh.
Speaker 1 (07:05):
Yeah, what advice to someone that's just like, ah.
Speaker 2 (07:08):
Yeah, look, I would say definitely come with somewhat of
a plan, but don't be too said in it.
Speaker 3 (07:15):
A little organic.
Speaker 2 (07:16):
Find out where there are networking and workshops where they
can start to make friends really quickly in the industry,
so join them. And there's actually some really good programs
with Australian organizations as well. But I would be like,
have somewhat of a plan and hit the ground knowing
that you're going to have to build some networks quickly.
Know how you're going to go about doing that. You
need There's so many people that come to Hollywood like
(07:37):
chasing that dream from Australian around the world. Have somewhat
of a plan, but know how you're going to start
to build your network. If you come here without one, like,
know how you're going to build your network. It's really important.
It won't be enough just to be really talented.
Speaker 1 (07:51):
Oh. I was trying to Matt about this other day.
We reckon the talent is maybe twenty percent initially, Yeah,
because you've got to be able to get in the room.
Speaker 2 (07:59):
Yes, I got to know someone who's going to say, hey,
I know this person, you should speak to them. There's
so much word of mouth that it's really important just
to be building your networks and to be doing things
like community theater. I think it's really important because it
gets you on stage, it gets you comfortable, it gets
people seeing you.
Speaker 3 (08:15):
It helps you start to build friendships and networks. I
think it's super important.
Speaker 2 (08:19):
Find work out how you're going to pay the rent,
and if doing your love means you may not get
paid doing it for the first some little while, like
overcome that, be humble about it, get out there, get
people seeing your work, building networks.
Speaker 1 (08:31):
I always say LA is a beautiful, brutal beast.
Speaker 3 (08:36):
It's a great analogy well, because.
Speaker 1 (08:38):
There are those days where you're like, oh, how am
I going to pay rent this month? And then literally
a week later you're sitting opposite someone and you're like,
oh my goodness, this is all things are going to
turn around. It's such an incredible place, but it is
scary if you don't. I think I love that you've
said have a plan, but kind of like be flexible
with that one hundred as well, and then work on community,
(08:59):
because so like you want people that get your dream,
that get it when you have like you've sent off
ten self tapes that week and you have you got
ten rejections, you just don't hear anything back. And I
think you need those people that like get it and
are in it with you as well.
Speaker 2 (09:14):
Yeah, that's a really good point. It would be also,
that's a really good point. It's not just your network.
It's going to be a support group for you as well.
It's going to help with the rejections. I'll come now.
Speaker 1 (09:24):
Final question. If you and I could look into a
crystal ball right now, five years from now, where is Linda.
Speaker 3 (09:33):
She's really happy.
Speaker 2 (09:34):
Yeah, I'm definitely a person who who thrives and looks
for happiness five years, I'd have to check with Josh.
Speaker 3 (09:41):
A creative genius. I don't know if that's.
Speaker 2 (09:43):
Film four or Film three, but many films with Josh Friedman,
who is just an extraordinary talent. And it's a gift
and a blessing that he gave me this opportunity. So
filmmaking with Josh and happy doing it, very happy doing it.
I can hear him laughing, Joshi.
Speaker 1 (10:01):
I feel like I feel like and this is just
I want to end on this it. I feel like
if you've got a dream and you've got those people
around you that have the same dream but also believe
in you. That is kind of like that magic mix
that you need that like supersedes the talent, the workout,
like those things are all really important. But having that
teammate I think is the difference between making it and
(10:24):
not and you two have that in one another.
Speaker 2 (10:26):
Yeah, I would absolutely agree. I think that that's a
great way to frame it. I do think you need
someone who you know is going to support you, so
even if they have to tease and that you may
not want to hear, you know, it's from a place
of love, and I think it's really important, and I
do think it can be I think LA can be lonely.
Like I think the way you've described it was really
well done. You have to find your people, It's really important,
(10:49):
Like you got to know who your tribe is.
Speaker 1 (10:51):
Even I don't know, we've only hung out a few times,
but I'm like, I'm so glad I went to that
Aussie lunch and a bit you I know, no like
we've made to rip am mate. So thank you for
going that day and for me being seated next to
you guys, because it feels like it was meant to be.
So thank you, and this is the beginning of really
(11:11):
nice friendship doing so thank you, thank you so much.
