Maintaining and repairing underground pipes has traditionally involved costly and disruptive excavation work. However, advancements in pipeline rehabilitation technologies have introduced less invasive and more efficient methods. One such solution gaining popularity in Spain and worldwide is pipe repair using continuous lining, also known as “manga continua.” Companies like Entuba have pioneered this technique, offering clients an innovative alternative to traditional Reparación de tuberías that avoids the need for digging and extensive construction.

What Is Continuous Lining Pipe Repair?

Continuous lining involves inserting a flexible fiberglass sleeve impregnated with resin into the damaged pipeline. This sleeve is introduced through the existing pipe and then cured in place, creating a new, durable internal pipe lining. The result is a seamless, jointless, and corrosion-resistant pipe within the original pipe’s structure, restoring its integrity and functionality without removing or replacing the old pipe.

This trenchless technology can be applied to a variety of pipes made from different materials and is particularly valuable for urban or industrial settings where excavation would cause significant disruption.

The Installation Process

The repair process using continuous lining typically follows these steps:

  1. Initial Inspection: Before starting, a detailed inspection using a high-definition camera is performed to assess the condition of the pipe and locate defects, blockages, or irregularities.
  2. Cleaning: The pipe is thoroughly cleaned with high-pressure water or mechanical tools to remove sediment, roots, grease, and other debris that could interfere with the lining’s adhesion.
  3. Inserting the Liner: The resin-impregnated fiberglass liner (manga) is inserted into the pipe using pressure — often air or water — to expand it against the existing pipe walls.
  4. Curing: The resin is then cured in place, either by heat, steam, or ultraviolet light, which hardens the liner, transforming it into a new pipe inside the old one.
  5. Final Inspection: A post-installation camera inspection confirms that the lining is properly installed and free of defects.

Benefits of Using Continuous Lining

This pipe repair method offers numerous advantages compared to traditional excavation and pipe replacement:

  • No Excavation Needed: The trenchless approach eliminates the need to dig up streets, yards, or floors, minimizing disruption to residents, traffic, and businesses.
  • Cost-Effective: Reducing labor, restoration work, and downtime means significant savings for property owners and municipalities.
  • Durable and Long-Lasting: The cured resin lining is resistant to corrosion, cracks, and leaks, often extending pipe life by 50 years or more.
  • Versatile Application: Suitable for pipes of varying diameters and materials, this method can be used in residential, commercial, and industrial environments.
  • Environmentally Friendly: Without excavation, there is less waste and environmental impact.

Typical Applications

Continuous lining technology is ideal for:

  • Rehabilitating sewer and drainage systems.
  • Repairing pipes in residential complexes, hotels, industrial facilities, and municipal networks.
  • Addressing pipe issues in areas where excavation is impractical or prohibited.
