Dressed Like Kings is a visually rich short film by Stacey L. Holman that explores the South African tradition of oswenka—a subculture where working-class men participate in weekly style pageants to earn the title of “Best Dressed”. But beneath the polished shoes and tailored suits lies a deeper narrative: fashion as a form of cultural resistance, dignity, and self-expression. ’Dressed Like Kings’ Film is now streaming on Black Public Media’s “Afro Pop’s Digital Shorts Series that’s airing on Black Public Media’s YouTube Channel. The film's premiere coincides with the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Superfine: Tailoring Black Style exhibition. The creator/director of the film Stacey L. Holman is our guest to chat more about the making of the film.
