Speaker 1 (00:23):
1st Baptist, baptist
El Dorado, will you join me now
in listening to our sermon fromthis week?
Turn with me to Genesis, chapter 3.
I want to read verse 1 through9, and then I want us to walk
through it together Genesis 3.
(00:44):
Now the serpent was more craftythan any other beast of the
field that the Lord God had made.
He said to the woman did Godactually say you shall not eat
of any tree in the garden?
And the woman said to theserpent we may eat of the fruit
of the trees in the garden.
But God said you shall not eatof the fruit of the tree that is
in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest
(01:07):
you die.
But the serpent said to thewoman you will not surely die,
for God knows that when you eatof it your eyes will be opened
and you will be like God,knowing good and evil.
So when the woman saw that thetree was good for food and that
it was a delight to the eyes andthat the tree was to be desired
to make one wise, she took ofits fruit and ate, and she also
(01:31):
gave some to her husband, whowas with her, and he ate.
Then the eyes of both wereopened and they knew that they
were naked and they sewed figleaves together and made
themselves loincloths.
And they heard the sound of theLord God walking in the garden
in the cool of the day, and theman and his wife hid themselves
from the presence of the LordGod among the trees of the
(01:52):
garden.
But the Lord God called to theman and said to him where are
you?
Let's pray together.
Lord Jesus, would you speak nowby your spirit?
Transform us by your word inChrist's name, amen.
How did this happen?
How did I get here?
(02:13):
Where do we go from here?
These were the questions I wasasking myself.
In late August of 2012.
I had graduated college just afew months before.
I had an internship that paidme somewhere around 58 cents an
hour.
I had $87 to my name and Ilooked at a buddy of mine and
(02:36):
said with all those things goingour way, we need to make a
cross-country trip.
We need to go to WashingtonState.
It was Labor Day weekend andone of my favorite musical
artists was playing three nightsat the Gorge Amphitheater.
The Gorge Amphitheater you canput a picture up and scroll
through nicknamed Heaven'sAmphitheater.
It's this beautiful concertvenue that truly overlooks this
(03:01):
gorge, the scale of a GrandCanyon type gorge.
It overlooks just a beautifulvenue.
And again, when you have $87 inyour bank account, that's when
you do it.
And so we flew into Seattle andinstantly everything started
going wrong.
Because we hadn't plannedanything, there wasn't anything
(03:21):
to go right, but everything wentwrong and there was a Motel 6
stay in Issaquah, washington, and then we arrive at the venue,
at the campsite, where we'regoing to spend three nights.
We get there and find out veryquickly we have not planned at
all.
We had packed a tent in ourluggage that was able to fit
(03:43):
within our suitcase on the planeand we thought we'd be in good
company there.
We get there and realize thatthere are real-life adults that
plan for these things.
And so we're at the campsitewith 30,000 truly other people
and I wish you could see it.
I wish I had a picture.
But imagine this A large RV, anRV, an RV, a two-person tent, an
(04:06):
RV, an RV.
And that's exactly what we did.
People felt sorry for us and Ifelt sorry for me, and I
remember the three hours ofevery night we were at the show.
It was heaven on earth.
It was unbelievable.
The other 21 hours of thosethree days not so good.
(04:29):
And I remember laying down inlate August it's already chilly,
very chilly at night inWashington State.
I remember sleeping on the cold, hard ground.
Next to me someone's in aheated RV and I'm freezing, I'm
shivering, the ground hurts andI'm asking the question how did
this happen?
How in the world did I get here?
(04:49):
What in the world do I do now?
These are the same questions weask in Genesis, chapter 3.
How did we get here?
How did this happen?
And yet in Genesis, chapter 3,the stakes are a little bit
higher than a chilly night onthe ground of a campsite.
The stakes actually haveeternal significance, not just
(05:10):
for Adam and Eve, but for youand I, for all of our eternities
, for all of our salvation.
How did we get here?
How did this happen?
Because last week we saw Genesis1 and 2, everything was right,
everything was perfect.
We have a creator, we're madein the image of that creator,
we're made to honor that creator.
(05:31):
And then we turn one page andeverything goes wrong.
Chapter 3, verse 1,.
Now the serpent was more craftythan any other beast of the
field that the Lord God had made.
So instantly a new characterarrives in the story up until
this point it's the Lord, it'sman, it's woman, man made in the
(05:51):
image of God, woman as well, made from the the side of Adam.
But now you have Adam and Eve,you have God.
And now a fourth character comeson the scene the serpent.
And we know this isn't just anyserpent.
This is Satan serpent.
And we know this isn't just anyserpent.
This is Satan, this is thetempter, this is the evil one
himself who has come into thegarden.
And what does he say?
He said to the woman did Godactually say you shall not eat
(06:15):
of any tree that is in thegarden?
Did God actually say that?
Now, if you were to ask Satanin that moment, what is he up to
?
He'd say nothing.
Just, were to ask Satan in thatmoment, what is he up to?
He'd say nothing.
Just, I'm just asking thequestions, I'm just posing a
question.
Maybe God actually did say it.
I'm just clarifying.
That's what he'd say.
Nothing wrong with clarifying.
Is there Nothing wrong withjust making sure you're on the
(06:37):
same page with God?
That's actually kind of him, isn't it?
He just wants to make sureEve's on the same page with God.
Did God actually say.
What he's doing is verydeceptive.
He just wants to put a littleseed of curiosity in Eve's heart
, or maybe confusion, about theword of God.
Did God actually say you shallnot eat of any tree in the
(06:59):
garden?
We see just one chapter before,in verse 16 of chapter 2, that
actually God said you may surelyeat of every tree that's in the
garden.
You see, satan wants God'srules to sound so negative, when
really this command is given inthe context of absolute freedom
(07:19):
you may eat of any tree that isin the garden.
Now, following that, there isone command I give you Don't eat
of the one tree in the middleof the garden, but the whole
garden is open to you.
And yet Satan wants to say didGod actually say it?
Are you sure he said what youthink you said?
As a quick side note, eveshould have just walked away at
(07:43):
this moment.
As a quick side note, eveshould have just walked away at
this moment.
You and I, our problem and ourtemptation, when the evil one
tempts us as well, is that wetalk back to him.
We try to have a conversation.
If Eve had just run away inthis moment, things might have
gone differently.
But she speaks, verse 2, andthe woman said to the serpent we
(08:05):
may eat of the fruit of thetrees in the garden.
Verse 2, she does.
Well, that's accurate.
That is what God said.
We may eat of the trees, of thefruit of the garden.
But verse 3, but God said he'sstill saying what God said you
shall not eat of the fruit ofthe tree that is in the midst of
the garden.
(08:25):
Good, so far.
Neither shall you touch it,lest you die.
There's two truths in thatverse and one lie.
You may not eat of the tree inthe midst of the garden, correct
, you will die.
Correct.
But right in the middle, neither shall you touch it.
(08:48):
I turn back one chapter to verse17 of chapter 2.
It says this is God speakingthe command, but the tree of the
knowledge of good and evil youshall not eat.
For in the day that you eat ofit, you shall surely die.
And yet in this moment Eve hasadded something to it.
We shall not eat of it.
But then she has this neithershall you touch it, lest you die
(09:10):
.
Eve actually adds something toit that God did not say, and
maybe we could be kind to Eveand say it was an innocent
mistake, maybe in her mind she'stold herself I'm not even
going's told herself I'm noteven going to go around it, I'm
not even going to touch it,because what if temptation gets
strong, if I go touch it, nomatter what?
(09:31):
There seems to be just a sliverof, maybe confusion about what
God has said.
She's added something to it andSatan probably in this moment
knows that he's got her.
He's got her.
What started with just a simplequestion.
We're just asking questionshere.
Did God really say?
(09:52):
Now, one verse later, we haveEve telling us what God says,
but she's not telling usaccurately.
There's a little doubt, there'sa little confusion.
She doesn't quite recallexactly what God has said and so
Satan knows he's got her.
Verse four.
But the serpent said to thewoman you will not surely die,
(10:13):
you will not surely die.
What started in verse one isjust a simple curiosity.
Did God really say A sneakyplan?
In verse four he comes outright.
He kind of says the quiet partout loud as he reveals who he is
and what he's up to.
He completely opposes what Godhas said.
(10:37):
God said you shall surely die.
Satan comes and says you're notgoing to die.
In fact, reading in the Hebrewthat the command of God you
shall surely die is two words inthe Hebrew.
Satan also gives those exactsame two words, and yet he adds
one word, lo in front of it,which simply means not.
(10:57):
So quite literally, if youspelled that out, not, you shall
surely die.
What Satan is doing is justsaying I am negating what God
has said.
It is not the case that youshall surely die.
He wants to give the exactopposite.
He wants them to realize, or atleast in Satan's eyes, realize
(11:18):
that God doesn't mean it.
You're not actually going todie.
He is negating the very word ofGod.
Instead of God's commands, hewants to give the exact opposite
.
This leads me to point numberone, which is simply this man
rebels when he doesn't rely onthe word of God.
Man rebels when he doesn't relyon the word of God.
(11:42):
We instantly see that this isshaping up to do that exact
thing, and I ask this questionwhy do we read this story that
is thousands and thousands ofyears old, like, why are we here
in 2025 in this beautiful roomand thinking about a story of
two people that is thousands ofyears old, with a lot of time in
(12:03):
between, a lot of culturalchanges, a lot of life.
Things are different now,aren't they?
Why do we read this story?
Well, one and the most simpleanswer is because it is the word
of God.
That's why we read it.
It is part of the grandstoryline of scripture the
garden where man and sin rebelagainst God that leads to this
redemption process.
(12:24):
We see throughout scripturethat points to Christ.
That's the most importantreason, but also, I'd argue this
we we read it because thereality is nothing has changed
that when you see this story, you think about your heart and
my heart and the heart ofmankind.
Nothing has changed here, andeven when you study Satan's
(12:46):
tactics in this moment, you'llquickly realize this as well.
Nothing has changed.
I've been fascinated by watchingthe NCAA tournament over the
last few weeks.
There's been some highs andthere's been one really big low
and a lot of fun games and all,but as I've watched, it's just
fascinating to think about howit all works.
(13:07):
On Selection Sunday, a teamwill find out where they're
going and who they're playing.
Before that they have no idea, and so the assistant coaches
will run to their offices andget every piece of game film
over a team they have neverplayed before, and so the
assistant coaches will run totheir offices and get every
piece of game film over a teamthey have never played before
and they will stay up all nightfor about four days learning as
much as they can about this team.
(13:28):
And if they win that, they'vegot less time.
They've got about 48 hours orless to stay up all night to
study the game film to see howthey could possibly beat the new
team If they keep winning.
They do that over and overagain.
What Genesis 3, I believe, givesus is the game film on the
strategy of Satan that if westudy his tactics, as we study
(13:52):
what he's up to, not just in theGarden of Eden, but in El
Dorado, arkansas, in 2025, wesee clearly what he wants for us
.
And what he wants for us is tobe individuals who do not lean
on and trust the word of God.
He would delight that we wouldbe individuals that see the word
(14:12):
of God as something that we atleast wonder.
Is it really trustworthy To seethis word?
And wonder?
Did God really say and he'sbeen doing it forever Matthew,
chapter 4, I see Jesus in thewilderness Three times.
Satan comes to him to tempt him.
The stone turns to bread, jumpoff the temple and the angels
(14:36):
will catch you.
Won't that be an impressivespectacle.
If you'll bow down to me, allthe kingdoms of the earth,
they'll be yours, and threetimes.
How does Jesus combat thetemptation of the devil?
He does it with scripture, withthe word of God.
And I think this if JesusChrist, god in flesh, the author
(14:58):
of the word of God, used theword of God to combat the
temptation of Satan, how muchmore do you and I need it?
How much more do you and I needto depend on God's word?
And what happens when we don't?
There's confusion about what Godhas said.
We're unsure about what God hassaid.
(15:19):
We'll let culture or the worlddictate, maybe, what God has
said?
We're unsure about what God hassaid.
We'll let culture or the worlddictate, maybe, what God has
said, or at least what God meantby what he said.
And so, as people of God whodesire to be victorious over sin
in our sanctification, what dowe need to be?
We need to be people of theword, that know the word, that
(15:42):
cherish the word, and even asyou hear that maybe there's a
temptation of, you know, there'sthe pastor telling me to read
the Bible.
You know that's isn't that whatpastors do?
A little stereotypical.
You know me saying just readthe Bible.
But I want to tell you, pleasenever read the Bible, because I
told you to read the Bible.
That's a bad reason.
Never read the Bible becauseyou feel like you need to check
(16:06):
a box and that'll finally makeyou spiritual because you've
checked the right box.
Read this word because it's, asScripture says, sharper than
that double-edged sword that'sliving, that's active.
2 Timothy 2, 3.16.
2 Timothy 3.16,.
The God-inspired, god-writtenword of God that is good for
(16:27):
your life and for your soul andthat, as it gets into you not
just you getting in the word, but the word getting into you
you will have something to drawfrom when Satan comes to you
with the very same tactics hedid in the Garden of Eden.
Because we get in trouble, werebel when we don't trust the
Word of God.
And so read the Word, know theWord, experience the Word and
(16:53):
trust the Word.
Live out the Word of God.
Man rebels when he doesn't relyon the word of God, but I
believe this man also rebelswhen he doesn't trust the hand
of God.
Keep reading with me.
We just saw, in verse four theserpent say this you will not
surely die.
This is Satan completelynegating, opposing the word of
(17:16):
God.
Verse five he's still speaking, for God knows that when you eat
of it, your eyes will be openedand you will be like God,
(17:46):
knowing good and evil.
Let me say that again, for Godknows that when you eat of it,
your eyes will be open and youwill be like God, knowing good
and evil.
As we're studying the game filmhere and studying these tactics
, let me tell you what Satanwants to do right now.
He wants Adam and Eve torealize that there is something
God's not telling them.
It's not the truth, but hewants them to think that at
least there's something God'skeeping from you.
There's something that wouldsure be nice to have, would sure
(18:08):
make you more than youcurrently are, would sure make
you a more impressive individual, would sure give you some power
and prestige and someprominence you don't currently
have.
But here's the problem, adamand Eve, that God is just
holding out on you.
It's ironic what Satan isoffering.
You'll be like God.
(18:31):
It's interesting because justtwo chapters before, man and
woman were made what In theimage of God.
They were made by God to berepresentatives of God.
It's ironic that Satan isoffering to be like God.
They're made in the image ofGod.
They're not God, of course, butthey're made in his image.
(18:53):
It reminds me again in thetemptation of Matthew 4,.
Satan says Jesus, if you'll justbow down to me, all the
kingdoms of the earth will beyours.
Who's he telling that?
To?
The man who created heaven andearth, the one that all the
kingdoms of the earth will bowdown to him anyway.
That's just where this thing isheading, and Satan wanted to
(19:14):
offer him what Jesus already had.
And even here you'll be likeGod.
To the very people made in theimage of God.
But you know what it made Adamand Eve wonder is God really
holding back?
And the motto of Satan issimply this God is not enough.
The motto of Satan is this Godis not enough.
(19:37):
Where in your life are youtempted, even now, to ask the
question is God holding back?
Is there more certainly that hecould give me, but he's just
not right now?
Or do you look around at thosebeside you and those around you
and saying God sure has blessedthem in this certain way?
(19:58):
Why hasn't he done that for me?
Yet God seems to be protectingthem.
God seems to be providing forthem.
God has answered those prayers.
He sure hadn't answered mine.
Why is he holding out on me?
And here Satan wants themthinking that there's something
more that God can give them.
(20:18):
Here, satan wants them thinkingthat there's something more
that God can give them, but Goddoesn't want to.
The very God who had given themall things.
Satan wants them to believethat God is holding back.
And so then we see what happensnext.
Verse 6,.
So when the woman saw that thetree was good for food, that it
was a delight to the eyes andthat the tree was to be desired
to make one wise, she took ofits fruit and ate.
(20:40):
She also gave some to herhusband, who was with her, and
he ate.
You talk about studying thegame film.
Let's study the game film ofour own sin, of our own life.
Look at the progression thathappens here.
The woman saw that the tree wasgood for food, number one.
Number two, it was delight tothe eyes.
And number three, it was to bedesired to make one wise.
(21:03):
To summarize the three pointsit will satisfy, it pleases the
eye and it will provide what Ilack.
Think about that.
It will satisfy, it pleases theeye, it will desire what I lack
.
Think about any temptation inyour own life, any sin that you
run to, any sin that iscrouching right outside your
(21:25):
door.
I would argue it fits one, twoor all three of those categories
that it will satisfy me.
I'll finally get thesatisfaction If I can just take
hold of that thing.
There's something I'm missingand if I can have it I'll
finally get the validation orthe satisfaction or whatever I'm
lacking.
It'll now be mine.
It pleases the eye, it looksgood.
(21:47):
I don't have it and it looksgood and kind of summarizing all
.
It will provide what I lack.
God has not given it to me yet.
Maybe God's forgotten about meand he doesn't know.
I want this or I need this, andgod is holding out on me so I
can reach out and I can take itfor myself.
That's the story of all of oursin.
But I also want to see this atthe very end of verse 6, she
(22:10):
also gave some to her husbandwho was with her.
Let's be clear about this.
She gave some to her husbandwho was with her, her husband
who was with her.
This is not a one-sidedsituation.
This is not Eve, who has goneand eaten the fruit and
therefore sin has entered theworld because of Eve.
No, where is Adam?
(22:30):
Right beside her.
Right beside her, this is manand this is wife, trying to
worship the creature rather thanthe creator, trying to find
themselves as creatures in theplace of the creator.
I can be like God and I can doit without God, but where does
(22:56):
it lead us?
Verse 7,.
Then the eyes of both were open.
They knew that they were naked.
They sewed fig leaves togetherand made themselves loincloths.
Verse 8, and they heard thesound of the Lord God walking in
the garden in the cool of theday, and the man and his wife
hid themselves from the presenceof the Lord God among the trees
(23:17):
in the garden.
There's those questions how didwe get here?
What has happened?
What have we become?
It's interesting.
So often in our sin not always, but sometimes in tempting us,
satan will tell us some of thetruth.
He never tells us the wholetruth.
(23:39):
He'll tell us some of the truth.
He never tells us the wholetruth.
He'll tell us some of the truth.
He'll say things like your eyeswill be opened.
That's very true.
He'll say things like you'llknow good and evil.
Man and woman now know good andevil at a very personal level.
But he'll never tell us thewhole truth.
He'll never tell us whathappens next.
(24:03):
He'll never tell us that thatsin will leave you in shame and
will leave you hiding from yourvery creator.
He'll never tell you where thatsin ends.
And so often in your own lifeyou've been tempted to run after
sin and Satan has told you allof the wonderful things about
(24:25):
that sin you've been chasingafter and maybe for a moment and
I mean a moment you felt likeyou had arrived, and yet Satan
never told you anything aboutthe aftermath.
He never told you about theconsequences of those sins.
He never told you about theforgiveness that you would have
(24:47):
to ask of from God but also havetough conversations with others
.
He never told you aboutbrokenness of trust within
relationship that sin can cause.
He never told you about how sincan impact the community, the
church, the family.
He doesn't tell you about theaftermath.
He just wants to tell you aboutwhat that sin can offer you.
(25:09):
He never tells you the wholestory.
Adam and Eve didn't get thewhole story.
Here and now they areexperiencing the rest of the
story and they do not like whatthey've gotten.
Here they are.
They've realized they're naked,they realize they're in shame.
And they are hiding from theircreator.
Think about that with me for asecond.
For two chapters, perfectcommunion with God.
(25:33):
And now, just a few verseslater, they are hiding from the
very God who created them, thevery God who can do anything
about their predicament.
They are hiding from him, amen.
Verse 9,.
But the Lord God called to theman and said to him where are
(25:57):
you?
The Lord God called to the manand said to him where are you?
Where should this story go?
Next, after verse 8, whereshould this story go?
If I were the sovereign God ofthe universe praise God, I'm not
(26:20):
.
Here's how my story would go.
Verse 8 you would hear mewalking through the garden.
But then it'd be my time tohandle business.
It'd be my time to let Adam andEve know that was a mistake, to
let them know that not only wasthat a mistake, but you're now
(26:40):
wiped off the face of the planet.
We're going to try again withanother couple and see if they
do a little bit better.
How could you mess up this much?
I gave you all this freedom andyou went after the one tree.
I told you not to.
I would have let them know.
And let's be clear, there ismoments of judgment that are
coming.
We'll see next week.
But I would have handled itdifferently.
(27:01):
What does God do?
He seeks out the very ones whowere hiding, who were naked, who
were ashamed, who had justbroken the command he had given.
God knows where they are.
God's never lost a game ofhide-and-go-seek in his life.
He knows right where they're at.
(27:22):
And yet he asked this questionso that man and woman would
communicate with him to providean answer, and we'll see more of
that next week.
Communicate with him to providean answer, and we'll see more
of that next week.
But simply the grace in thefact that God would call out to
(27:43):
them when are you?
In their hiding, in their shame.
God says189 chapters in theBible.
1,189 chapters in the Bible.
We had two of perfect communionwith God, and then three
(28:03):
chapters in.
We made it all fall apart.
And yet, early on, only nineverses in to us, making it fall
apart, we see a God who walksthrough the garden looking for
his creation Not his perfect, impressive, ashamed creation.
(28:26):
Where are you?
And for the rest of thesechapters of this book.
The story continues about howGod continued to seek out his
people who were hiding and whowere ashamed.
(28:49):
The whole story it's not alwaysa pretty story on our end of
the equation.
In fact it shows more and morehow rebellious you and I can be.
And yet the whole story is thestory of God asking where are
you, and not just asking butdoing something about it.
That God would send his own son, in the likeness of you and I
(29:09):
in flesh, to come seek us out ata very personal level.
And all of our sin andrebellion, from Adam and Eve and
to you and I today, all of itplaced upon himself.
His own son on the cross.
That's what this book is about,so that as we turn to first
Corinthians 15, we can readthese verses in verse 21.
(29:31):
For as by a man came death, bya man has also come the
resurrection of the dead Verse22,.
Look at this.
For in Adam all die.
We see that.
We've seen that just now.
For as in Adam all die, so alsoin Christ shall all be made
(29:55):
alive.
The sermon's over.
But I want to give you threewords, the three best words you
can hear when you're hiding andyou're ashamed when you're
hiding and you're ashamed.
(30:16):
The three best words Adam andEve can hear in the garden
running from their creator.
The three best words we canfind in our own moments of sin,
our own moments of shame, ourown moments of hiding, the three
best words that will turn thissermon into just a sermon about
(30:37):
how we messed everything up,into a sermon that God can
actually do something with andinto a sermon that will point us
to something in the future.
The three best words when you'rehiding in a shame is simply
this, to be continued that thegrand storyline of Scripture
(30:57):
tells us that, beginning with agarden, as dark as it may look,
the story's not over.
There's another garden comingat Gethsemane, when Jesus said
Lord, your will be done.
Because of that, he went to thecross An early Sunday morning
(31:17):
in a garden tomb.
He walked out of the grave, andthat tells me this that there's
a future garden, a garden citythat's waiting for us the new
heavens and the new earth.
So, truly, in the truest sense, this story is to be continued,
that Christ is on the move Frombefore the foundation of the
(31:41):
world, but certainly from thismoment of fall in the garden.
God is on the move.
Redemption is coming and onEaster morning we will celebrate
together what we reallycelebrate every Sunday morning.
That redemption has come.
Maybe for you this morning, youwant that redemption.
You hear that and you say no,no, I'm not waiting three more
(32:05):
weeks to Easter.
I'm gonna have Easter righthere, right now.
Come down, talk with me and letme introduce you to Jesus
Christ.
Maybe you want to join ourchurch family and be a part of
what God is doing here.
That's what we want.
We want you with us.
We'll be a lot better churchwhen you get here.
Maybe you want a pastor to prayover you.
We'd love to get to do that, but however, you need to respond
(32:27):
.
Maybe it's right where you'reat, just doing business with the
Lord, right there in your pew.
However, you need to respondafter I pray.
I'd ask that you do it.
Let me pray for us.
Lord Jesus, thank you for thegospel.
Thank you that, though we weredead in sins, the story's not
over.
It is to be continued.
(32:49):
That, as in Adam, all die, soin Christ, all will be made
alive.
If there's one this morning, that needs to be continued.
That, as in Adam, all die, soin Christ, all will be made
alive.
If there's one this morningthat needs to be made alive,
would they come now by yourspirit, lord, we thank you for
the truth of the gospel.
Lord, let us be people of thatgospel as we respond this
(33:11):
morning.
Would we just do business withyou as you do work in our hearts
.
We ask this in Christ's name, amen.
Will you stand now as weworship together?
I'll be down front.
