Summary:
Overview of CrossFit's Approach to Fitness: CrossFit's goal is to develop a broad, general, and inclusive fitness program that prepares trainees for any physical contingency, including the unknown and unknowable. Their prescription is constantly varied, high-intensity functional movements that develop 10 key physical skills: cardiovascular/respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance, and accuracy.
CrossFit's Methodology and Implementation: CrossFit's methodology is entirely empirical, based on measurable, observable, and repeatable data. They embrace an "open source" approach, publicly posting workouts and performance data to enable a collaborative community that can advance the science of human performance. CrossFit is structured as a sport, with the use of whiteboards, clocks, scores, and competition to drive high-intensity training.
Defining Fitness and Health: CrossFit views fitness and health as overlapping constructs, represented on a continuum from sickness to wellness to exceptional fitness. They measure fitness by an individual's work capacity across broad time and modal domains, which can be plotted as the area under a power-duration curve.
