In a dramatic escalation, Israeli warplanes struck targets across Gaza after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered “powerful strikes” in response to alleged Hamas ceasefire breaches. Israel carried out another strike in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, killing at least two people, following a night of heavy bombardment that left at least 104 Palestinians dead — including children — in what has become the most serious test yet of the increasingly fragile, U.S.-brokered ceasefire. The Israeli military said the strike targeted a site in Beit Lahia, northern Gaza, where weapons were allegedly being stored for an imminent attack. According to Gaza City’s Al-Shifa Hospital, two bodies were brought in from the scene. Following Tuesday night’s bombardment, Israel announced it was once again observing the ceasefire, and U.S. officials signaled they did not view the truce as having been violated.
